So Doctor's major aspect as a character (when they are their own character) is memory. They claim their role, even after they became a tactician for Theresa, to be an observer to her history. They are a witness, they are to remember her. That appears in the event referred to as "Vigilo", which is something like " I watch, remain awake, keep or am awake at night". To keep vigil, is something done either to pray or to be on a watchout. A common reason to keep vigil over dead, to mourn then and to give them the last farewell, to pay respect.
Nian tells Doctor that she wants a witness too, whatever fate befalls her and her siblings to be seen and remembered.
Priestess' request towards Doctor is to remember her. The society Doctor came from, their past, it all appears to be lost in sands of time. There's few indication that most even know it ever existed, only songs that mention cities buried under ice, only rediscovery of old artefacts. Doctor, in a way, is one of the few people still carrying the history of that time in their memory.
When FrostNova dies, arguably, Doctor is here to witness her anger and her despair and they carry it with themselves, as well as her hope.
In Vigilo they are feel lost and despairing over their lost memory, of those who died, of people they used to know and no longer remember. They grieve but they are also frantic.
Being a witness, a carrier of history is a part of their identity even if they seem not quite cognizant of that.
But why is it interesting aside from their way to conceptualize their role in the world or whatever hidden duty they may have?
Originium and Civilight Eterna.
Fundamental nature of originium is that it keeps memory of everything it consumes. It stores so much information about living things, that it may as well be a repository of the Terra's history of its own. It is a fossil, it is something that consumes. In a way, perhaps, it will remember people better than any historian, as terrible as iti is. Essentially, the subject of Doctor's study is such that it will remember all dead it had into contact with.
Civilight Eterna meanwhile was initially designed as an archive meant to record the history. It is to be a witness, to remember, too.
As in, there is a clear mirror between Doctor's self-stated role as an observer, originium nature and the origins of the CE, which was implied as a highly important achievement of the civilization that created it.
In a sense, Doctor's always to keep vigil over ruins, over dead, over past, it reflecting in their occupation, in their study. Brain, oripathy.
It makes their war against originium doubly interesting, both share that connection to memory.
So everything about Doctor is about history (mirroring how Kal'tsit herself is all about history of civilizations that lived in Terra and what they did and how they lived). Which is also a major theme for Arknights.

A doodle of my Arknights doctor based on the username I use here and there (a phrase, not actually a username I use here).

So like, I think it would be neat if doctor was in fact a whale, though they definitely won’t be an Aegir.
See, arknights has already associated whales and the arks, and it already posited that the remains look so enormous that it is impossible to imagine them being dead (here, we can reapply that to a number of things - like the ancient civilization and fear of death and collapse of the current one and so on and also they are super mysterious)
Whales have a lot going on for them, starting with the mythos and the idea that they could swallow people whole (highly unlikely to actually happen), they are also creatures that are defined by returning (they first went to land and then returned to the sea) and being changed till they are unrecognisable (again, first to land and then to sea again!). And I think... I think it would have been neat for Doctor, symbolically and thematicaly, not a literal whale but someone so far removed from their past but also returning to their origins.

Absolutely losing my mind here at Silverash nonstop sniping down all the people Doctor suggests could be his friends if he just lets them. No you see I have created too many boundaries and walls around myself and throughout my network of *checks notes* acquaintances, employees, and family members, for me to ever be completely genuine with any one of them

While I always enjoy your buff Arknights characters (thank you for the Saria especially), what're your headcanons for your Doctor in your version of AK?
Hmm... My Doctor is either nonbinary or fem. Also very ace. Appearance-wise, they have medium-length hair and dark under-eye circles. They have spiral pupils. They're relatively short. Skinny and undernourished. Honestly my design for Doctor is just a haggard version of that one promotional concept art of Doctor that looks vaguely feminine.
Let me list some things about Doctor that I actually like, and kept intact in my own portrayal:
their parental relationship with Amiya
their awkward, sometimes hostile dynamic with Kal'tsit
they have lingering feelings of depression and detachment surrounding their amnesia and separation from Priestess
implied autistic
they’re physically weak and sensitive to light
their acute observational skills
a fondness towards physical contact
their academic background in neurology/history
a strange tendency to drink boiling hot liquids directly and eat random consumables
A lot has happened in over four years. Particularly the way Doctor is written and how certain characters are written around them. In a perfect world, Doctor as a vehicle for self-insertion does not exist. What currently exists is canon discontinuity for me, and I've realized that the only way for me not to gag at Doctor content in the game is if I reconcile their existence by superimposing my own take.
However, in doing so, I refuse to call it a self-insert. That word is so loaded with awful baggage and is a viscerally unpleasant reminder of how some of my faves' writing is ruined for the sake of pandering to the lowest common denominator in order to make the player feel special. At the same time, I'm not depicting "Canon Doctor" either because so much of the "canon" writing around them is so half-baked and poorly-constructed in a failed attempt to appease both self-inserters and people who want an Actual Character.
My Doctor is not In-Game Buckethead, not a self-insert, but a secret third thing. Taking characterization bits that I like and discarding the ones I don't. Same goes for every operator who's writing suddenly takes a nosedive whenever in-game Doctor is involved.
If I have any singular Doctor ship, it's with Priestess. Priestess is their tragic soulmate, and Doctor wanting to reunite with her gives even more reason/justification for other characters to distrust them because of the implication that Priestess was responsible for the Oripathy outbreak.
Maybe with Kal'tsit too, but the dynamic has to be very specifically complex and not reduce Kal'tsit into a tsundere.

One of personal pet hcsI have is that if Doctor isn't just a very talented and very fucked up collegue of Priestess she grew close to over shared dreams and visions.
Then the person we know as Doctor appeared when Priestess became Priestess. Literally or metaphorically. It does apply even to general "Priesstess and Doctor are just very good friends" idea but. idk, I think it is vital that you understand the alternative I specifically envision in my head as. What is knowledge. Can you truly define the Universe. What does it mean to exist. You categorize, you use your perception, the cognitive abilities your species developed over millenia. You think and ponder and engage in theorycrafting, and one of the results of this thought, of this attempt to tackle what, perhaps, may for all we know be impossible to define. As science. If Priestess ever ventured beyond the wall that we call "the known", then what she brought back from here she must have also coated in the definitions that can be known. The science. The doctor. Her closest most intimate friend. That's the alternative very dubious hc I propose.
In between we can posit many more possibilities of various levels of "two researchers really do some dubious things together and to each other" of course.

On the Doctor's eating habits, do you think he would eat frozen pancakes, frozen, as a treat? I ask because I did this a lot in my early 20s.
Forgive my lack of americanity here but I did not know frozen pancakes existed in the first place.
I think Doctor stores them in their cheeks like beavers, as extra yummy calories to last throughout the day. They'll be sitting at their desk, and sometimes people will hear loud crunching coming from Doctor's direction and wondering what that noise is or how they are doing that. The only people that know what's up are Kal'tsit, who will not acknowledge it, Amiya, who thinks it's beyond dope and secretly trains every night to accomplish the selfsame deed, and Gavial, who was directly responsible for this behavior in the first place after she challenged them to eat this entire stack of frozen pancakes in five minutes and let's just say Gavial was 250 Lungmen Dollars poorer that day.
