Scotty’s Big Day Out
Scott was very excited for the family trip to Airworld Aviation Museum - he even got everyone up at the crack of dawn but then they insisted on making cupcakes before they left the house!
Finally arrived and the first craft was some kind of helicopter… which was fine but not really what he was here for…
Tumblr media
The rounded the corner and then - now we’re talking - the Vampire T Mk.11. Scott made everyone else study the schematics before he’d let them in the cockpit…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then a full inspection inside the craft. Brains wasn’t 100% convinced it was flight-worthy…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But everyone else had a great time poking around…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then they all went off to explore…
Tumblr media
Scott found his favourite straight away!
Tumblr media
He just needed some way of getting *into* it…
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Virgil compared some folding wing with those on Two, then had a pleasant chat with Brains about engines…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gordon somehow managed to locate the only seafaring vessel in the place…
Tumblr media
And Alan found a computer game…
Tumblr media
A little big-bro-little-bro educational moment:
Tumblr media
They all felt the helicopter had seen better days but reckoned as a team they could get it airborne…
Tumblr media
John found some reading material…
Tumblr media
And then found some antique comms…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Tinies practised their morse code…
Tumblr media
Brains concluded the next craft was in a worse state than Thunderbird 4 after 3 rounds with The Mechanic
Tumblr media
While Scott was looking the other way, Kayo found the missile controls and Alan found the… what does this one do?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scott made an important discovery about this plane…
Tumblr media
Coffee time with the YMCA…
Tumblr media
Oh and just one more to see on the way out…

Has anyone here heard the story of SwordQuest? If not buckle up, because have I got a tale for you.
In the early 1980s when Atari was at the height of its power, the company had an ambitious idea the likes of which the gaming world had never seen before, with genuine treasure on the line. The Franklin Mint was commissioned to create five prizes valued at $150,000. And everyone who bought one of the SwordQuest games had a chance to win.
The concept was simple: a quartet of fantasy-themed games based on the four elements - earth, fire, water and air - as well as different aspects of classic mythology; the Western Zodiac, the Tree of Life, Chakra points, and the I Ching. The games were essentially a collection of mini games that rewarded you with secret codes. Each game was sold with a comic book that held within its pages a hidden message, and the codes from the game were used to decipher it.
How the contest worked was that gamers who thought they figured out the message would mail their guess to Atari. The first eight people to correctly guess the message would be invited to participate in a contest where everyone would simultaneously play a custom version of the game, which also had secret codes and a hidden message to uncover. Whoever figured it out first would win one of four prizes: a chalice, a medallion, a crown and a philosopher's stone, each made of gold and other precious metals/stones, and each valued at $25,000. And if that wasn't enough, the plan was for the four contest winners to compete in one final tournament, with the winner receiving the Sword of Ultimate Sorcery worth $50,000.
Sadly, the Video Game Crash of 1983 ended the contest prematurely. Only the first three games Earthworld, Fireworld, Waterworld were released - it wouldn't be until four decades later in 2022 when Airworld finally saw the light of day with the Atari 50th Anniversary Collection. As a result, only the contests for those three games were held, with only the chalice and medallion confirmed as being awarded. (The contest for Waterworld occurred during the height of Atari's financial problems, was hosted for legal obligations and open to a very limited number. It is unknown if the crown was rewarded or if the winner received the cash value of the prize.) The fate of the remaining prizes has long been an urban legend in the world of gaming: some have claimed they were in possession of the man who bought out Atari in 1984, but the likelier explanation is that they were returned to the Franklin Mint and melted down for their base components.
Video games as a whole made a comeback following the Video Game Crash, and even Atari still soldiered on as a shadow of its former self, but SwordQuest was never revived. There have been plenty of video game contests over the years, and these days we have e-sports leagues with huge cash prizes. But nothing like SwordQuest has ever been repeated.
They weren't just video games; they were a true quest, an adventure for the ages.

Atari's 50th anniversary? Really? It's weird to think the videogame industry is already half a century old lol. I still think of it as something that started like two decades ago.
Anyway, my christmas present for myself is the Atari 50 collection for the Switch. It has freaking AIRWORLD on it! That's like an Scorsese collection that somehow has Goncharov included lmao.

Friends, I have been having a blast playing the recently released Atari 5O: The Anniversary Celebration by Digital Eclipse. Interviews, quotes, historical artifacts, original artwork, and more make this a worthy addition to your games library. Although I will add that the fact that Digital Eclipse was kind enough to produce the fourth title in the Swordquest series - this made me tear up something fierce. For those of you that listened to the Diary of An Arcade Employee podcast or read my stuff for the Retroist or Pop Culture Retrorama - you know that Swordquest was an important game series for my Grandmother and I back in the day. That is why I'm attempting to beat Airworld - with her notebook of original Swordquest notes right beside me. #atari #swordquest #digitaleclipse #nerdlyfe #haveyouplayedataritoday #popculture https://www.instagram.com/p/ClE-uNuuYxp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

We had a brief that was entitled The Four Elements- we had to represents this through art. We had to choose the elements: all of them, pair them, only one of them. I chose to work with the Air element! I am heavily inspired by Studio Ghibli animation, especially their beautiful art style and story lines. Afterwards, I took that inspiration and I drew a design for the Air World.
I made a world where the humans are small sized (inspired by Arrietty, animation movie) and they live in the hot air balloons. The other elements don’t exist within this universe. The purple balloons represent the little houses they live in, the middle one is the ‘Town Hall’, or Balloon Hall. It is where they all meet and socialise! The dragons are not always visible, as they are the Air spirits and they protect the world from evil and pollution. They maintain the harmony and balance between air and humanity. The main blue dragon is inspired by Haku from Spirited Away. He is the big protector and has the most power over the Air World. Spirits seem to be a common element in Japanese animation as people tend to ask for their guidance and protection at times. The smaller dragons are inspired by Pokemon, they represent the rest of the air spirits that do the rest of the work by protecting whatever needed.
Due to very tight timeline it is not as polished or even the desired scale. However, this must be one of my favourite projects. I would love to transfer this idea onto a real space; it would not only suit the young generation but also Studio Ghibli fans, which include a lot of adults. I chose fantasy as my subject because I felt the need for positivity as the world seems to be crippling in climate change and air pollution. I made all the objects by hand, excluding the frame. I kept it very light and worked with paper and textile, so it is not heavy to maintain or carry. The spirits were going to be made out of modelling clay but the clay was much heavier than I thought. Anyways, I would still love to go back to this idea of using the material as it is malleable and very versatile. Paper has been one of my struggles, but I seem to be getting better with it. This could easily be turned into a major project as well, which will hopefully influence future ones!

Retronauts Micro 59: The return of Atari's SwordQuest
Confession time: I had a dual motive in mind when I invited Chris Sims of War Rocket Ajax and The ISB to join us for the most recent episode of Retronauts. One, he knows a lot about Batman, making him a perfect foil for our Batman-centric episode. But also, he’s the cowriter of Dynamite Comics’ upcoming SwordQuest series. With issue Zero due out in a couple of weeks, now seemed like a perfect…
