My dog hates my sick voice. Absolutely despises it.

And to be fair, I get it. Right now I sound like a dying frog. It's bad. If I didn't have to be me, I wouldn't want to hang around me right now either.

But it is both endlessly frustrating and truly hysterical that I can see my dog evaluating the consequences of her choice every time I call her in from outside . . . Or when she is considering being naughty (and knows I can see her and will therefore scold her). . .

To be fair, in the second photo she is not weighing her options, but she is begging me to stop using the frog voice and talk normally. (I really wish I could baby.)

Behold, gentle internet reader, a small snippet of the shenanigans of a wild chaos gremlin masquerading as my German shepherd. . .

Sorka has a mega-secure crate after it became obvious wire crates could not contain the landshark under high stress. It's called Fort Knox. It has hollow steel bars arranged in some mystical geometry meant to keep her from clawing or chewing out in any direction. The door bolts are slides that only work if turned at the correct angle.

In addition to being a lifelong survival partner to me, Sorka is an amateur physicist. She dreams of joining a lab and discovering how to eliminate the need for angular momentum. Spinning things are dangerous unless they stay spinning at the same velocity always. I am routinely scolded for turning off fans in her presence. And for turning them on. I have never known a domestic canine to spend as much time checking the ceiling for threats as she does.

As part of her studies, Sorka quite enjoys playing with doors. Things that swing. Things she can slam closed that then reopen. Things that slam closed and trap her in the bathroom so she can make mournful sounds until someone rescues her (again) from the bathroom. (Notable tangent: she has also been studying acoustics and can now mimic the exact sounds of entrapment by wailing into specific corners of the bathrooms, allowing her to surprise her "rescuer" with her absolute lack of peril.)

So I have several baby gates to help control her access to various rooms. And to protect my sanity and that of any guests to our home.

Sorka can open the baby gates unless you engage the child lock.

Valuable context: Sorka's favorite time of day is bedtime. When I tell you this dog would be happiest if she could convince me to be in bed trying to sleep by 8:30 every night, I am not exaggerating at all. She does her best to trick me into going into the bedroom anytime I am doing something in the evenings she considers to be less enjoyable than bedtime.

Last night, I had an evening video call I needed to join. So I locked the bedrooms off, gave her a dental treat, and logged on.

She started making a ruckus about halfway through the call. Not unexpected, but I thought she was just smacking at the locked baby gate. . . Until I went in after my call and found that not only was the baby gate UNlocked, but Sorka had managed to LOCK her own crate.

It was confusing enough that I went back through the nanny cam footage. Partly to be sure she hadn't learned to undo the child lock on the baby gate (she hadn't, I'd messed up the slider thing). . .

Did my dog SERIOUSLY consider breaking into her own crate from above!?

Enjoy the look of glee on her face after she had successfully lured me to the bedroom.

(Not pictured: her foot-stomping tantrum when I made her leave the crate because it was not, in fact, bedtime.)

For anyone who wonders, yes, Sorka knows where the nanny cam is. She seems to be aware that it lets me know what she is doing - I can talk through the camera and have scolded her for being naughty. (And it worked! She stopped nomming my pillow!)

A few weeks ago, according to my mom, Sorka even attempted to "call" me at work by boofing at the camera a few times. Sadly, I was in a meeting and didn't see the "sound detected" alert 😥

So, you know, several words of caution to anyone thinking they can handle a German shepherd. Are you sure? Because they can and will make you feel stupid 😂
