Red Spring
The world has been ravaged by vampires. A group of survivors band together to search for loved ones who may be alive, dead or something in between, eventually taking shelter in what may be the only safe hideout left to them. But well defended hideouts have a way of becoming prisons. And prisons aren’t the safest place to be when your friends can turn on you at any time.

Don’t hit that snooze button, it’s time for our #sleptonsaturday pick where we feature movies you might have missed. Today’s feature is The Battery. The film released in 2012, directed and written by Jeremy Gardner. The film stars Gardner and co-producer Adam Cronheim. It’s a different take on trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. The film was shot in 15 days with a budget of $6,000. Gardner did a great job focusing on the relationship of Ben and Mickey in this film. Some dislike this movie due to lack of gore and zombie hordes. To enjoy this film you must have an open mind, and realize that the people who are living are more dangerous than the dead. October 27th — The Battery (2012)
Ben: You wanna know the difference between you and me?
Mickey: What, I’m not an asshole?
Ben: It’s that we both know that there’s a girl out there, right. Driving around, doing some highly organized scavenging. Some recon missions. Who knows, it could be a couple fuckin’ weirdos on the radio but let’s say she’s out there.
She’s probably coming from someplace fortified. Big walls, like you said. But these are logical deductions, yes?
Mickey: What’s your point?
Ben: My point is, in your mind she’s like this post-apocalyptic pixie-girl. With like a gun on her hip, and like a garder. And maybe like a scar that’s so well-placed that it shows how tough she is but it doesn’t fuck up her pretty face, right?
And in my mind? She’s like a forty-six year old softball coach. With a mullet. And fuckin’ calves like canned hams, man. Right? I mean if they’re gonna send a woman that’s who they’re gonna send. A trucker. A bull dyke. Not fuckin’ Frank’s barely legal niece.
But you’re a romantic, and I’m a realist. It’s okay. Probably gonna get you killed though.
Most contemporary zombie films you see nowadays follow a pretty standard formula, with the protagonist waking up somewhere and suddenly it’s the zombie apocalypse. They run for their lives, maybe find a weapon, and meet up with a group of other survivors and the movie kind of takes off from there. It’s the same origin story retold in slightly different ways. It’s like every new Batman movie.
Sometimes, though, you get little gems like ‘The Battery’ that fly under the radar, buried under mountains of similar films rehashing the same premise with a bigger budget to match. I can assure you that ‘The Battery’ is not that.
Two former baseball players with very different personalities attempt to survive in the backwoods of Connecticut as the dead walk the earth. Ben is loud, impulsive, and relishes in smashing in the heads of zombies whenever he can get a chance. Mickey, however, prefers the comfort of his headphones and walkman over the sounds of the dead. As they walk the lonely roads, Ben and Mickey butt heads on just about everything.
Ben feels right at home fishing and foraging for food and sleeping in the trees. Mickey though absolutely detests the idea of living ‘primitively’ — missing the comforts of a warm bed and companionship with other human beings. So when they hear other voices over the channel of their walkie talkie, Mickey becomes determined to find them, even despite their vigilant warnings not to seek them out.
Mickey is rejuvenated through his newfound goal to locate the other survivors, while Ben struggles to acclimate Mickey to their harsh new world. Through blood and conflict, Ben and Mickey strengthen their bond.
‘The Battery’, being shot on a shoestring budget, can’t even afford the opportunity to be like mainstream zombie films, so Jeremy Gardner got creative and decided to start the film in the midst of an apocalypse already happening. It’s basically just two dudes surviving in the woods. Because zombies are seen so infrequently, it’s the threat of one ever appearing that makes the film more appealing.
The chemistry between the two main actors is not only realistic, but quite funny. The dialogue is written with enough curse-words and banter to make their hot/cold dynamic completely believable.
The flaws in this film are not very noticeable. Aside from a couple scenes that maybe run a bit too long, and a lack of a strong narrative, it’s not at all things the average horror fan would pick up or care about.
As a zombie feature, the movie absolutely works as a drama too. Take out the zombies and it would have been just as good as a quirky ‘road-drama’ about two guys stuck in a car together.
If you’re looking for a low-budget zombie film that’s funny, offbeat with great acting, I highly recommend this.
