Small Interiors That Burst With Colour
Bursts of coral pink, vivid purples and blues, bumblebee yellow and fresh turquoise enliven these three modern apartments. From scattered accent walls, pink cement floors and statement furniture, to tinted lighting, daring kitchen schemes and bright bathrooms, if it’s colour you’re after then you’ll find bags of inspo right here. Join us as we tour a daring pink and purple studio design with a cactus wall mural, a blue and pink accent interior with an eye catching kitchen, plus a yellow and turquoise splashed apartment with a plethora of zoning techniques.
Visualizer: Timur Mitin   A wild monochrome rug makes pink flooring positively pop inside this 50 square metre home in Moscow, Russian Federation. Pink, green and blue poufs up the colour intensity.
A round coffee table rests on the contoured print rug. A pink planter pushes up from the pink cement floor.
Pink neon tube lights burn around the edges of the living space. A unique zigzag light strikes a 90’s vibe across the lounge ceiling.
A low room divider has been erected behind the couch, to visually separate the lounge from an adjacent dining area. A cactus mural helps to expand the sense of spaciousness in the living room.
Four Tulip chairs encircle a small round dining table.
A white orb dining pendant light stands out crisply against the dark grey backdrop. A house plant provides a visual stop between the dining spot and the kitchen.
White tiles form a border around the one wall kitchen design, climbing the wall height, spanning floor, and even bridging the ceiling. A single purple wall shelf disrupts the white kitchen design, drawing inspiration from a narrow purple accent wall at its side.
A pink bicycle colour coordinates with the floor.
The bedroom area of the studio apartment is accessed via an impressive archway. A bespoke floor bed design fills the arched recess, which is lit brightly by its own window. Another purple accent wall wraps around the window reveal.
Purple accents multiply inside the small bathroom, with a compact purple corner sink and cabinet combo. Purple LEDs fizz around the edges of the ceiling.
A bright coral pink toilet pan matches with the pink floor.
Studio layout.
Visualizer: Timur Mitin   A bold blue modern sofa colours the living room of our next home tour.
The blue couch upholstery contrasts deliciously with a solid pink kitchen.
A small teal dining set floats freely in the centre of the open plan. As there is no dining table pendant light present, the set could easily be moved to one side of the room to open up the flow if the need or want arose.
Modern dining chairs pull snugly under the table to create a compact footprint.
The pink one wall kitchen has a sculptural element to it with its curious arched top.
A pink accent wall creates a sweeping entry into the bedroom, which is shielded from direct view of the living room by obscure glass. A decorative wall mirror reflects natural light from the large bedroom window. A stylish swing arm wall lamp highlights a black bedside table, whereas the bright orange bedside needs no further fanfare.
Stainless steel closets make a unique and striking addition to the space. The doors are set back to allow an ample walkway around the bed. The back of the wardrobe forms an interesting metal focal point for the living room.
Going into the bathroom, a brilliant aqua blue toilet steals the show, swiftly followed by a modern pedestal sink with a unique bathroom vanity light.
A striped rug and matching planter throw in some fun pattern.
Apartment layout.
Visualizer: 3DDecor.vn   In our next apartment, quirky artwork characterises a turquoise and grey lounge space. A marble coffee table connects with the modern artworks sophisticated inspiration.
A glass room divider gives a glimpse of the neighbouring dining room.
Duo tone paint effect splits the wall between turquoise and grey.
A floating media cabinet leaves the floor space clear to increase the sense of space.
The dining area is sandwiched cosily between the lounge’s glass partition and a turquoise dividing wall with the kitchen. A dining bench sweeps beneath a serving hatch, where used dishes can be fed through onto a shelf on the kitchen side. industrial style dining chairs add cheerful notes of yellow, along with a statement dining pendant light and colourful honeycomb wall shelves.
A monochrome floor defines the kitchen zone.
Honeycomb tiles back the light grey L-shaped kitchen.
Mirrors reflect the room, creating a spacious optical illusion. Bespoke storage cabinets and a fitted shoe bench furnish the home entryway.
Mirrored doors conceal a dressing room.
A floating vanity sits just behind the bifold partition.
Storage drawers pull out from beneath a platform floor that leads to a set of closets.
A grey vanity stool and coordinating mirror team with the wall mounted dressing table. Grey tongue and groove decorates the vanity wall.
Yellow and turquoise accents colour the bedroom. A bumble bee yellow runner stripes the end of the bed, matching a plethora of pillows and an eye catching desk chair.
A light turquoise headboard wall and pale grey base notes cool the look.
Fitted storage makes the most of the room’s small dimensions.
A glass fronted closet maintains the room’s visible depth.
The floor plan illustrates that the dressing room could be utilised as an extra bedroom if a mattress were added to the wide podium, just as in the master.

Emerging Summer Trends in Home Décor
Now that we’ve officially entered the summer season, it’s time for a home décor refresh! Out with the cold and in with blue skies, vibrant flowers, foliage and warm weather. Your summer home décor should follow suit, as color, warmth and nature are major themes in 2018 summer home décor.
We reached out to interior designers to get their take on how you can transition your winter and spring neutrals into trending summer colors and patterns. What follows are their insights.
Vibrant Colors
Image: Livettswallpaper.com
Neutrals had their day in the sun! Now it’s time for your whites, blacks and grays to transition into vibrant violets, peony pinks and indigo blues. We can’t say we didn’t see this color trend coming; Pantone’s Color the Year changed from a subtle greenery in 2017 to ultra violet in 2018.
According to Abra Landau, design expert at Fashion Furniture, summer is the perfect time to add colors to your home.
“Change neutral wall art out for colorful, graphic paintings, or replace existing table centerpieces with vibrant, fresh flowers,” said Landau. “Shop flea markets or antique stores for colorful pieces of tableware or rent a new set of dishes for summer in a bright, exciting color – no need to commit beyond a few months.”
Warm Metallics
Image: Atlantamagazine.com
As colors move from cold neutrals to warmer pigments, metal finishes are also experiencing a warmer transition. For example, while nickel and chrome reigned supreme in winter, summer is making way for brass, gold and rose gold, according to Lisa Melone Cloughen, founder of Melone Cloughen Interiors.
“I am seeing more ornate mirrors in beautiful gold and silver leaf finishes and they look fabulous in sleek interiors as well as more traditional settings. They bring the bling in a sophisticated way,” explained Cloughen.
Gold is a metal that will never go out of style, so if you’re looking for a timeless addition to your home décor, use plenty of gold finishes.
Accent Wallpaper
Image: Britco.com
One prominent trend in 2018 is statements. The days of minimalism is long gone, making way for statement doors, walls, art and even ceilings. The most popular way to make a statement this summer is with wallpaper.
That’s right, we’re seeing a resurgence of the popularity of wallpaper, which is finding its way onto ceiling and accents walls in the home. It’s relatively cheap, and you can purchase removable wallpaper for a less permanent commitment.
Watercolor wallpaper is especially popular this season, fulfilling both summer 2018 trends of bright, vibrant colors and the ombré effect, which is also seeing a resurgence in home décor.
“As a way of adding interest to the room without overpowering it with too much pattern, a few of our clients have added accent walls using wallpaper,” revealed Paige NeJame, owner of CertaPro Painters. “This keeps the room relatively neutral, except for the pop of pattern and color from the wallpaper.”
Bold Tiles
Image: Decorpad.com
Brighten up your bathroom floor or kitchen backsplash by swapping out your simple tiles with bold patterns and colors. Cement tiles are especially popular in 2018, and with it comes a whole new regard for color, texture and pattern.
The most prominent tile trends are herringbone, geometric and even terrazzo. This means that patterns are king this season, so when incorporating new tiling into strategic places in your home, think colorful and wild!
Floating Fixtures
Image: TheModestFarmhouse
Is it magic or expert engineering? Either way, floating fixtures are an emerging trend this summer. Abracadabra your living spaces with floating shelves and freestanding appliances.
This trend is especially popular in cramped bathroom and living spaces, as floating bulky items can actually open up a small room and give the illusion of a larger room.
“Wall-hung sinks actually defy gravity and add a dramatic look to a bathroom of any style,” said Jessica Parise from ChicExecs. “Without bulky cabinets below, the gorgeous flooring can shine through and give an illusion of a much larger space.”
Don’t stop at the bathroom: Incorporate floating shelving and storage in your living spaces to open up room to move around more freely.
Outdoors-Indoors
Image: Apartment Therapy
For the past few years, we’ve talked about how to maximize your outdoor space by incorporating indoor-outdoor living, but summer 2018 has flipped the trend on its head by bringing the outdoors in.
“For those times you won’t be outside, bring the great outdoors into the house,” said Landau. “Summer feels real when sign of green plants, seashells and other outdoor items are inside, especially when they bring pops of color with them.”
Even traditional outdoor materials, like rattan and bamboo, are finding their way indoors. The trend allows an earthy, outdoor feel in your home as rattan chairs, mirrors and other statement pieces are popping up.
Additionally, botanical prints are continuing in popularity from their debut in 2017 – a fan favorite for throw pillows and blankets.
Textured Textiles
Image: DomesticImperfection.com
Bohemian style continues in home décor as textured and embellished textiles are still on-trend in 2018. This globally inspired trend is artistic and homey, giving a unique touch to your wall art or throws.
The most popular product of this trend is reflected in macramé wall hangings, woven rugs and tassels on the corners of pillows and blankets.
Woven materials bring a homey, approachable aspect to your home with a handcrafted look and feel. Use this trend, paired with the outdoors-indoor trend, to place macramé planters around the rooms in your home to create a natural, earthy aesthetic.
Purple Accent Chair – $252
Metal Corner Shelf – $49
Woven Wall Art – $58
Blue Herringbone Wall Tile – $11.98 per tile
Botanical Cushion Cover – $6
Ombre Watercolor Wallpaper – $125
Honeycomb Barrel End Table – $113
The summer season is all about color and nature. Give your home a new life by incorporating 2018 summer décor trends into your home.
Which trend are you most excited to try this summer? Let us know in the comments below!

Teen Bedroom Decorating Tips, Tricks & Projects
Teens need a space to call their own, to give them room to grow their independence and to find out who they are, what they like, to dream… However, their thoughts on decorating their rooms often clashes with what their parents think they should” look like.  Teens are just looking for a way to express their own sense of style and creativity, and parents are just looking for a way to save a few dollars while doing it! Here are my top five tricks for making your teens happy with their space.
  Add color.
Feel free to use color in a teens room with much more abandon than you would in a public area…most teens respond to color and pattern. Just remember, their idea of color and pattern may be very different from yours. This doesn’t mean they get their way entirely, it’s still your house, your rules. But try to take into account that it is, their room, and be a little flexible. Suggest painting each wall a different color with the most dramatic color directly behind the bed for drama. (They are teens, after all!:)) Don’t forget the ceiling. Remember, warm colors like red and orange energize a space, while cool colors such as blue and purple bring calm. Some teens might like a bright space, where others prefer a more sophisticated palette. Match your color scheme to your teens needs and personality.
  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
This DIY asymmetrical striped wall adds color and pattern, and I love the contrasting headboard! This paint treatment could be adapted for both a girl or a guy, depending on the colors you used.
  Add pattern.
Pattern adds energy to a room, and no one thrives off an energetic atmosphere better than a teen! To keep the look from being too busy, try pairing a print with a geometric, and temper the look with a solid. Use patterns that encompass the rooms’ color scheme to keep things looking uniform. Mandi at ‘Vintage Revivals’ has the pattern thing down. If your teen loves high energy in their room, then this DIY honeycomb wall is perfect! Remember, you could choose any color scheme, and as many or as few different colors as your teen chooses. The fewer colors, the less energy.
Want to add pattern in a guys room? Try this idea from ‘Project Nursery‘. (OK, you don’t have to tell them it was from a baby site!) They used 12 inch wide planks attached over a navy painted wall for a masculine look.
  Organize.
Offer your teen a way to keep the clutter and mess to a minimum, and they will find their space much more enjoyable. (And much less conflict for you!) Plastic bins or baskets can go a long way to corralling school papers, makeup and jewelry, and knick knacks. Use drawstring bags, hooks attached to the walls or inside closets, or boxes under the bed for hobby items. Make sure they have plenty of hangars so they never have that excuse. If they absolutely cannot find it in their hearts to hang up their own clothes, consider installing a closet system with shelves to place their folded clothes on. Better than the floor!
Our daughter and myself collect little shopping bags like lint on wool. Can’t help it, they are so cute! Check out this shopping bag organizing project from ‘Le Zoe Musings’ that is a perfect way to hang on to them, yet make them more than a pile in the closet. Attached to the wall with simple push pins, add these in groups for easy desk or beauty storage.
These rolling underbed storage carts are an easy way to keep things a bit more under control in a teens room. Great tutorial from Jenna at ‘Jenna Burger Design’.
More honeycomb projects! This hexagon organizer cube was the star on the wall above a teen boys bed over at ‘Today’s Creative Life‘. They had them made, but if you want a full tutorial for this project, then jump back over to ‘Jenna Burger Design’ and see how she did the DIY honeycomb shelves,  in the photo above with the underbed carts! You never knew your teen could be this much fun, right?
  Make the bed a star.
The bed is the primary piece of furniture in a teens room, and their usual hang out spot. So make it important in the room. Make throw pillows for it, pick up a couple of yards of fleece to make a blanket throw, paint a headboard panel behind it in a contrasting color. Paint the bed frame itself one of the brighter accent colors in the room. For girls, pick up an inexpensive netting canopy, or hang your own fabric or LED string lights from the ceiling with small hooks. In a boys room, remember, less is more. Solid colors, fewer pillows, and a place to set their sodas and snacks will all be appreciated!
At ‘Classy Clutter’, they did a surprise teen bedroom makeover for a girl who was facing some tough surgeries… Not only was the gesture amazing, this room is too! This is a good example of what you can do, even if you are renting. The dots on the wall and the quote above the bed make the focal wall stand out, but are easily removable peel and stick. They added color in pillows and painted an inexpensive Ikea nightstands this soft pink. They purchased their headboard, but you can learn to make an upholstered headboard yourself!
Allow your teens personality to shine through.
Help them find a way to display awards, trophies, or certificates that speak of what is important to them. Don’t judge whether your teens decorating taste is boring, or loud, or tacky…even if they want it black! (That doesn’t mean you have to let them have it, just don’t judge them for it. Chalkboard paint is the perfect compromise!) A great way to do this is with fun accessories. Got a teen girl? Love this DIY rustic letters with flowers project from Toni at ‘Design Dazzle’. It doesn’t have to be her whole name, either. An initial? Monogram? How about an inspirational word, like “Strength”?
Let a floor mirror double the sparkle from LED string lights. Simple trick with lots of payback. From ‘Popsugar‘.
Let them experiment with their creativity and have fun with their space!

Pastel Coloured Interior With A Sweet Sense Of Fun
A sweet sense of fun pushes all the way through this playful pastel coloured apartment, visualised by Evgenia Belkina. The home incorporates a wonderful kids’ bedroom with an integrated playroom–whilst the parents bedroom is made by dropping down a modern Murphy bed design at one end of the lounge. A stunning powder blue and pink kitchen is combined with a family dining area in the airy layout, where natural elements like wood, rattan and dried pampas grass work to offset the sweetness of the candy coloured combo. The same soft palette graces each separate space of the home to create one beautifully calm and cohesive effect.
Designer: Elena Ivanova   A blush sofa and powder blue accent chair furnish our first pastel room decor scheme, making up a soft and sweet living room design. The striking minimalist art print behind the sofa is a line drawing entitled Adunbi by Shatha Al Dafai.
Solid pastel coloured canvases are propped behind the blue accent chair, and a gold floor reading lamp, to add layers to the layout.
A gold and white side table is accessorised with candle holders and a vase of dried pampas grass.
The airy room is lit by an elegant chandelier. Long blush curtains draw across patio doors in the evening to make this a cosy and intimate space.
At night, the living room becomes a bedroom too, after a Murphy bed is dropped down into place.
Bespoke cabinetry houses the Murphy bed, and plentiful storage opportunities are built around it. The powder blue units extend into the lounge area, where they become a media unit and decorative shelving.
When the Murphy bed is folded back into place inside the cabinets, it’s impossible to tell it’s there at all.
Gold hardware gives the pastel blue units a beautiful high-end appeal.
Line drawings hide inside the pull-down bed, hung above the pillows. The wall art makes the bed area feel more like a permanent, fully-fledged bedroom.
Over on the TV wall, glass cabinets display all sorts of trinkets and a small collection of books. A set of pastel shaded decorative vases dot the top of the media cabinet with colour.
Another duo of solid pastel painted canvases colour the dining area. A gold dining room pendant light brings in a rich glow.
Blush pink seat pads soften wood dining chairs.
Monochrome flooring adds striking contrast against the subtle tones of the room.
A powder blue and pink one wall kitchen stretches alongside the family dining area. The cabinets have a classic shaker profile, and traditional corbels make a decorative addition in hiding the extractor fan.
Natural rattan baskets and dried pampas grass do a great job in offsetting the sweetness of the pastel palette.
White crockery is displayed cleanly in glass fronted upper cabinets and open fronted shelving, which lifts the expanse of blue.
Blush and blue elements enrich a small covered balcony area.
A mint beanbag makes a cosy hangout spot. A vase of feathery pampas softens hard lines.
More pastel coloured bean bags hangout in the kid’s decor scheme, where mint, pale yellow and powder blue come together to make a light and inviting space for play. Circle rugs dot the wood floor, creating little islands for activities inside a dedicated playroom that’s attached to the kid’s bedroom. Storage drawers have been built right into a step that leads up to the sleeping area, which effectively divides the two zones, along with a set of glass doors.
The cute kids’ wall mural adds another element of fun; it also helps balance out the height of the kid’s gym that towers up the adjacent wall.
A yellow pouf echoes the circle shape and fringe colour of the round area rugs.
A tall unit shelves a multitude of kids’ toy storage boxes and kids’ room accessories.
Up the step, in the sleep zone, a comfy little seat has been built into a wall of storage units.
The bed spans the opposite wall, next to a tiny desk with a kids’ night light. A duo tone wall treatment and metallic polka dots shimmer behind the cloud light.
Bunny ears perk up on the back of the kid’s chair, as if listening out for bedtime stories.
Hexagonal kids’ shelves stack to make a tower of honeycomb pattern.
A white macramé style hanging chair swings in the kid’s covered balcony area, overlooked by playful wall art.
There is also a shared kids’ room in this home. Two large desks are set up in mirror image for a pair of slightly older kids who need more dedicated study space. See more shared kids’ rooms.
Blue cupboards provide lots of stow away space for school supplies and books in the kid’s study areas. White wardrobes stand adjoined to the blue cabinets to keep the room neat and sleek.
But it can’t be all work and no fun! A TV is mounted onto the wall for downtime.
Adorable kids art swings the balance back in favour of the fun factor too.
In order to free up all that space for study, bunk beds have been stacked at one end.
A circle is painted onto one wall as a focussed gallery area.
The kids’ beds have drawers built into the stairs to the top bunk, and even more beneath the bottom bunk to maximise space for toys and clothes.
Powder blue cabinets flank the foyer design too.
A flipped and recoloured version of Blue Nude II by Henri Matisse adds a touch of pink.
