Lee In X Hee-soo romance and kisses and…what the heck was that finale all about?
What the heck happened? 🤨 Their kisses in episode 8 were passionate and full of feeling. It was so full of their longing and pent-up desire for each other. And Hee-soo was so very clearly returning all of Lee In’s kisses. (Come to think of it, she did more than just return his kisses.)
So someone tell me why she suddenly turned into stone in the final episode? Did she become shy? Did it suddenly occur to her that she had acted contrary to Joseon’s conservative values when they became lovers? What??? At the end?
I can’t help but wonder at the sudden shift in atmosphere in the last episode. Hee-soo suddenly turned lukewarm in her reactions to Lee In. She seemed at a loss as to how to react to his intimate actions such as when he took her hand while they were walking during their little getaway. She hardly smiled during that whole outing. If anything, she looked confused most of the time. Shouldn’t she have been happy to finally be her true self with him?
And what made her think it was a good idea to go back to Qing without even telling Lee In about her departure? I couldn’t seem to find any context to her decision to stay away from him. Was she being nobly idiotic, as most KDrama heroes and heroines usually become near the end of the drama?
To be honest, the last episode, particularly the last half, was quite dissatisfying for me. It seemed to have lost all the element that made me love CTK. It was as if the drama just needed to end and they tacked on that last episode haphazardly. I think it should have been extended a few more episodes so that the resolution of the “captivation” between Lee In and Hee-soo is properly told. It was just…I don’t know. Weird. It just left me feeling hollow and incomplete after watching it.
The only thing that remained for me was the undeniable chemistry between Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se-kyung, which made me believe in the love between Lee In and Hee-soo until the end, her weird actions notwithstanding.

I have a curiosity about Baiting the Trap / Courting the King / chapter 1, when Gault visits Dream in the throne room. Gault says "The Corinthian is avoiding me". I wanted to know more if possible about why the Corinthian is keeping away from Gault and why there is for a moment a palpable tension between Gault and Dream :)
So I’ve actually been wanting to talk about this for months and months, because while it crosses into the plot of CtK it’s not really what it’s focusing on. There’s the beginnings of the thread in CtT too. I’d thought a lot about Gault when I was writing—have a lot of discarded prose that delves into it—and I picked her specifically to be the third character Dream interacts with in chapter 1. She contrasts very nicely with the Corinthian in a lot of ways and I’ve always thought her dream self would make him incredibly uncomfortable.
(Disclaimer: I do really like Gault so while some of this might seem very critical please bear with me.)
That moment of tension between her and Dream comes from how I feel her decisions in season one may have affected their relationship. And the Corinthian’s avoidance of Gault is a direct response to her becoming a dream. What Dream did to (for?) Gault is something to fear for the Corinthian. What’s an act of agency for her is a loss for him—though Dream’s alterations to Gault can be said to have only been surface level and in allowing her to call herself/officially act as a dream, the Corinthian doesn’t know that.
The Corinthian only sees Dream’s ability to change him at will, with or without his consent.
He only sees how easy it is. Only sees Gault asking for permission to change. That isn't the agency the Corinthian is trying to grasp. He doesn’t see her needing to ask for Dream’s approval to really be agency at all. The idea that change hinges on Dream’s allowance of it sits badly with him even as he still craves his creators approval, which is interesting because Dream is actually pleased by the fact he hasn't asked.
The Corinthian is also insulted by Gault even wanting to become a dream at all. It’s like oh? You don’t want to be a nightmare any more? You think you’re better than me because the King gave you some pretty wings and made you a dream?
This leads into how some of these reasons are reflected in Dream’s response to Gault. I see it as that, outside of her personal feelings, Gault has implied a hierarchy. A bias. And this is part of the reason why Dream is tense with her. There is also her misjudgement of him carrying forward into CtK even after she’d been made a dream (as if she hasn’t yet learned what he was trying to help her realise). When she visits him in the throne room Gault implies he’d kept the Corinthian from talking to her on purpose.
So part of the Corinthian’s very personal reasoning for avoiding her is reflected in Dream but in a much wider context. For Dream it’s not an ego thing, not really about her rejecting how he made her. It’s an insult to the King. To his role and to what that means. But it’s not just that, the wider context also includes the Dreamer’s, and he sees it as a rejection of them too. Of their need for what Gault is. Dream will probably be making something to fill her role, the role she found so intolerable, and so I think what matters most to Dream is the insult to them.
As he said to Burgess when he was freed from the cage:
“Have you any idea the damage you’ve done to your world?”
By separating Jed she stole him. Not just from Dream. But from his right as a Dreamer. It’s something I delved into a bit in ‘In Silence’ but part of the crime in what she did to Jed is in how she imposed her will/feelings onto a Dreamer. The Sandman/Nightmare King conflict came from her. (“You are the Sandman? Is that what she told you?”) Gault added to Jed's dream, built it with him by using her own perspectives, her own feelings of wishing for freedom. What she did was an abuse of power, it takes the Dreamer away from the center of their own subconscious experience. Akin to a therapist using a session for their own needs.
Her own attempts to reconcile the two halves of Dream’s role also showed him that she doesn’t really understand him either.
From what we see of it, Gault’s issues with Dream are very very self-based (I don’t want to say selfish because it’s not an intrinsically negative thing and I think there’s a difference between having those feelings and the way she acted upon them). It’s very much ‘I don’t want to be this any more, I want to change’ and ‘your rules are the issue’ and the framing of a I vs you is very similar to how the Corinthian frames his own rebellion. It’s the reason why rebellion is punished so harshly, and the reason why the other creations leaving the Dreaming is such a tragic, painful thing. Because Dream doesn’t frame his responses like that, doesn’t see this as a personal conflict at all.
It’s always the good of the Dreamer’s vs individual wants/needs. An attempt to negotiate that without failing his duties, an attempt at balance that doesn’t compromise why Dream and all his creations exist.
That balance might need to shift (as the series shows us Dream is testing out different ways of change) but it’s such a huge deal because of the risk of what might happen if he gets it wrong. Dream is thinking of the wider picture. He’s thinking of all the Dreamers, all his subjects, of the responsibility he has that is also shared with his creations (especially major acarna!) and he’s reacting as a ruler should.
A misunderstanding of this is a bigger insult coming from all three of his major arcana. While Fiddler’s Green doesn’t ‘rebel’ as such, Gault and the Corinthian both seem to see their rebellion as a noble retaliation against tyranny, a quest for agency against a ruler that allows them none. But both of them are wrong, or at least have a warped perspective of what exactly Dream is and what he represents.
Which returns us to the point about the Sandman/Nightmare King conflict Gault adds to Jed’s dream. It's not just a judgement of him and it definitely factors into that tension between these characters because in regards to measuring his creations against one another Dream is neutral.
(Bar that lovely masterpiece comment of course)
It’s more accurate to say that he doesn’t show prejudice to nightmares like Lucienne does (who demonstrates very clear bias against both Gault and the Corinthian), but Gault’s argument/request undermines this position. In blindly pushing so hard for her own interests—again, not saying she is wrong to want to change—she essentially forces Dream to appear to pick a side. To perhaps imply favouritism. To set a precedent without thinking through the consequences.
What could these be?
Well, they are the Corinthian’s complaints in a more widespread form. All of the other creations seeing the King allowing this and wondering what that means for what they are; other creations feeling disrespected, nightmares wondering what’s so bad about them that made Gault want not to be one anymore, dreams being like oh so can we be demoted?
As I said, it’s potentially introducing the idea of there being a hierarchy.
Dream isn’t really supposed to do that and I think there will be ramifications in the rest of the series. There is a happy resolution though that’s pretty easy to implement as a balance in how perhaps a dream being like 'yo I want to be a nightmare' could ease tensions. But at the moment there is no balance to this decision. And Dream isn't going to force one of his dreams to make that transition. I think Gault put Dream in a very difficult position with her request and assumed it was just him being a dick that fuelled resistance. She doesn’t see the bigger picture.
So I think Dream is angry on behalf of his other subjects too.
There’s probably some personal rejection in there, but it isn’t the larger motivator. I could very much write an angsty oneshot about Gault and Dream tbh because I have thought so much about them. But what’s important too is that Dream gave her wings regardless. I don’t think Gault would have done that for him. Also she didn’t dictate it (there’s more on this but I will move on before this gets too much longer). Regardless of his personal feelings Dream made her the most beautiful dream he could. Perhaps as a lesson—in CtK I imply the gift is double edged—but also leading by example, a ‘you may feel disgruntled but don’t let it warp the work you do’.
This also acknowledges her failings with Jed.
It’s Dream’s way of trying to help her figure out why he was so angry. As a personal choice ‘I don’t want to  make people afraid’ is not bad at all, but on a larger scale, when factoring in the bigger picture, it gets dicey.
Dream has a kingdom to run. A service to keep running. He creates art he loves, but he’s got things that need doing, that he needs to do too, and it’s like going up to your supervisor half way through your shift and going ‘I hate my job give me another. Specifically that one. Oh also I’ve been doing it anyway and neglecting my own duties.’ And the supervisor being like ‘i can’t really do that right now so I need you to get back to work.’
Very oversimplified but hopefully you get my point.
The job they all do is so incredibly important. And Dream has similar expectations for his creations as he does for himself. It’s like ‘I am not just your creator, I am your boss, your king, and I’m also responsible to a role I can’t escape. And as your king I have to tell you to just do your damn job’.
The allowance of her change is, for me, Dream saying ‘ok I will shoulder the heavier burden, give you the wings I wish I could give myself, because it’s not that you don’t deserve a freedom I can’t touch it’s that to give you it is far harder than it looks’
(But I am Dream and I will find a way)
Anyway, bringing it back to the Corinthian. He gets a different response because he isn’t about rejecting his nightmarish nature, or Dream’s, or classifying those parts as ‘bad’ . Gault has very much entered that territory. Really hope we see some development for her next season/some unpicking of that transformation and what it could mean in a wider context. I really think she might see some rejection/tension from other nightmares. To return to my supervisor metaphor. It’s like watching one employee seemingly get special treatment and being like ok what is going on here.
This got very long but hopefully coherent!
There’s a bit of dialogue coming up in the next fic where the Corinthian asks Dream straight out why he’s still angry at Gault but not at him. But I am honestly thinking of making the next part of the series a longer fic. Just because the lens is widening and I’d like to be able to pull some more of this stuff in, and explore a wider range of dynamics with other characters. Anyway thank you so much for the ask and hope this is an ok answer!

Budget-Friendly Keyboards for Beginners: Where to Start Your Musical Journey Online
Tumblr media
Embarking on a musical journey is an exciting endeavor, and for many beginners, finding an affordable yet quality keyboard is the first crucial step. With the convenience of online shopping, aspiring musicians now have access to a plethora of budget-friendly options to kickstart their musical exploration. In this article, we'll navigate the world of budget-friendly keyboards, offering insights on where to start your musical journey online.
Understanding Your Needs: Before diving into the realm of buy online keyboard shopping, it's essential to understand your needs as a beginner. Consider the type of music you want to play, the features that matter most to you, and your budget constraints. For beginners, keyboards with essential features like touch-sensitive keys, a variety of instrument sounds, and a headphone jack for private practice are often sufficient.
Reputable Online Retailers: Several reputable online retailers specialize in musical instruments, offering a wide range of budget-friendly keyboards suitable for beginners. Platforms like Amazon, Sweetwater, and Guitar Center provide extensive selections, user reviews, and competitive pricing. These websites often categorize keyboards based on user levels, making it easier for beginners to navigate and find the most suitable options.
Entry-Level Brands and Models: Many well-established brands offer entry-level keyboards specifically designed for beginners. Yamaha, Casio, and Alesis are among the brands known for producing quality yet affordable keyboards. Models like the Yamaha PSR-E273, Casio CTK-2550, and Alesis Melody 61 are popular choices for beginners, providing features like built-in lessons, diverse instrument sounds, and user-friendly interfaces.
Used Instruments Marketplaces: For those on an even tighter budget, exploring the used instruments market can be a viable option. Websites such as Reverb and eBay have dedicated sections for used keyboards, where beginners can find pre-owned instruments at significantly reduced prices. It's crucial to research the condition of the keyboard, read seller reviews, and ensure that the instrument meets your requirements before making a purchase.
Specialized Online Music Stores: Consider exploring online music stores that specialize in keyboards and other musical instruments. Websites like Thomann and zZounds often offer competitive pricing and comprehensive information about the keyboards they sell. These stores may also provide package deals that include essential accessories like stands, benches, and headphones, offering beginners a complete setup at an affordable price.
Customer Reviews and Ratings: Before making a purchase, take advantage of customer reviews and ratings available on online platforms. Real experiences from fellow musicians can provide valuable insights into the performance, durability, and user-friendliness of a particular keyboard model. Pay attention to reviews from beginners, as they can offer perspectives that align with your needs and expectations.
Consider Refurbished or Open-Box Options: Some online retailers offer refurbished or open-box keyboards at discounted prices. These instruments are often thoroughly inspected, repaired if necessary, and then resold at a lower cost. While they may show minor signs of wear, opting for a refurbished or open-box keyboard can be a cost-effective way to access higher-end models that may have been initially out of budget.
Comparison Shopping: Take the time to compare prices across different online platforms. While one retailer may offer a particular keyboard at a higher price, another might have a sale or promotion that brings the cost down. Comparison shopping allows you to make an informed decision and ensures that you get the best value for your budget.
Conclusion: Embarking on a musical journey doesn't have to break the bank. With the plethora of budget-friendly keyboards available online, beginners can find the perfect instrument to kickstart their musical exploration. Whether you choose a new entry-level model from reputable brands or explore the used instruments market, the key is to understand your needs, read reviews, and make a well-informed decision. Start your musical journey on the right note by finding an affordable keyboard that aligns with your aspirations and budget constraints.

CAS - creativity - 'CrAL - Creative Audiovisual Lab'
In March 2023 I signed up to participate in 'CrAL - Creative Audiovisual Lab', a CTK Rijeka project. The projects goal is to encourage young individuals (aging 14-19 years) to participate in various interpretations and productions of audiovisual content. I signed up with three more students from Gimnazija Andrije Mohorovičića and together with our mentor Leonila Marač we stared with the project. Our mentor would present videos from the CrAL Platform YouTube channel, we would discuss different topics and get assignments to photograph certain subjects and present our photos or writing our own stories based on the photographs. The workshops lasted for about two months and we soon began the final and the most important task of the project; a three minute short film. This is where the work really began. The three of us had to make up an idea and really actualize it. At first we weren’t sure what to capture, we first thought about making a survey, walk around town with a camera and microphone and ask questions regarding a certain topic, then we though about making a skate clip, ideas were flying. After some time we agreed we wanted something very aesthetically pleasing. What we all had in common was love for cinematographic masterpieces. We wanted our short film to be impactful but also present us. After some time we agreed our film was going to be about our perspectives, the way we view the world around is. We wanted to show how beautiful life can be in all of its simplicity. We came up with an idea; we split three minutes by four and captured the scenes on our own until we finally meet up and edit it into a short film. The filming process was beautiful and extremely fun, however, finding my location was a little bit tricky. I had so many beautiful places in mind I couldn't choose where to go. I thought about piecing up a clip of all of my favorite spots but in the end I opted for my favorite, a place I come to when I need closure and peace, I set up the camera and played with settings, I would then take turns going and passing by the camera, then to check the video recorded, then re do it, and so on and so on until I finally felt like I got what I needed for my 45 seconds. In the end I edited it on an app my laptop has preinstalled, it was nothing grand but it did the job, I liked that part almost as much as the filming part. I like editing and filming. I've been doing it since I was a child. I find pleasure in holding a device which can capture moments. I used to edit photographs and video clips of me and my friends, spend hours watching cinematographic videos and movies, from murder mysteries to documentaries about our planet. I am a big movie lover. I found this project extremely inspiring and exciting since I plan on continuing my studies in the movie industry direction, cinematography to be exact. Our film was premiered at the CrAL awards ceremony in September 2023. Schools from Croatia who applied to this project were invited to Dječja Kuća Rijeka for an awards ceremony, all of us fit into a room and watched our movies, connected to the community, enjoyed ourselves, shared our art and stories. We did not win first place, but were very close, what mattered was that we created something that we liked, with mindfulness and creativity.

Global Shigella Test Kit Market Is Estimated To Witness High Growth Owing To Increasing Awareness about Foodborne Illnesses

Initial Thoughts: CTK Finale’s Last Scenes
SPOILERS AHEAD (don’t read if you haven’t seen the final episode yet)
Okay. First off, the end was a bit anti-climactic for me. It was good that Myung-ha finally realized that Hee-soo would never return his affection and that she was deeply in love with Lee In. It was very noble of him to tell Lee In about Hee-soo’s plan to leave for Qing again without seeing him. But what I don’t get is why Hee-soo wants to stay away from Lee In, possibly forever?
Then the other part of me answered my own question: she probably believes in her heart that there’s no way for her to out herself and make their relationship work out. What she had done - dressing as a man and pretending to be one, and participating actively in treasonous activities - would hound her forever and would greatly compromise Lee In’s authority as the king, if it was ever found out that they were lovers even while all of it was happening. Hee-soo probably believes that the only way she can protect Lee In now and be of service to him is to stay in Qing and be his eyes and ears in the Emperor’s court. She clearly had no illusions of becoming his concubine, more so his queen. And she couldn’t be his gidaeryong and secret lover forever.
Hee-soo was ready to go down the noble idiocy route. She encouraged Lee In to find himself a new queen before they parted. Lee In just refused to let her continue with that train of thought.
It’s a good thing Lee In is no-nonsense and didn’t stand for all her noble “self-sacrifice”. He wanted her and he was going to get her back.
Which is why I’m raising my point about that kiss. Where was the passion, the desire and the longing after having been apart for so long? Where was that fire that we saw between them when they first gave in to their feelings? Why did Hee-soo suddenly seem to forget how to kiss back when we saw that she definitely knew how to do so?
It’s not about a prurient interest on that kiss. It’s more of their love and longing for each other being translated and presented through that kiss. It’s about being realistic about how much two people like them would have missed each other.
The last scene felt hurried and even their last words of love to each other felt a bit hollow, as if the writer and director just needed them to put closure on the story. It’s a good thing Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se-kyung have chemistry in spades. They could convey so much passion and longing with just the way they look at each other. This was what salvaged that last scene for me.
I’ll digest the finale further and see what comes up,

I keep just writing little snippets of things but the good news about that is that I now have the next two chapters of Deliverance nearly finished and CtK is about 900 words shy of where it needs to be. Really hate that it's taken so long but I'm excited to hopefully post chapter 3 this weekend after I finish editing it. Been one of those really weird few months where I've written loads but finished hardly anything

This flu season, respiratory diseases are at their highest in years but there is a shortage of many necessary medicines, including penicillin and routine over-the-counter treatments. Photograph By Petr Svancara, CTK/AP Images
Science: Feeling Sick? Here’s How Different Cold and Flu Drugs Work
Understanding what different medications do to fight seasonal illnesses can help you find the right treatment.
— By Emily Sohn | January 11, 2023
With early surges of flu, RSV, and other seasonal respiratory illnesses that are piling on recent increased COVID cases, it has been a rough winter already—not just because of all the coughs and fevers, but because it can be hard to find the medications commonly used to treat those symptoms. The FDA is listing more than 100 current and recently resolved drug shortages, with others reported locally, including amoxicillin, Children’s Tylenol, and Tamiflu.
“We're getting more callbacks from pharmacies because they don't have the prescription that we've written,” says Erin Fox, senior pharmacy director at the University of Utah Health in Salt Lake City. “I’m hearing from a lot of fellow physicians across the country that they are experiencing the same thing.”
The reasons for the shortages are a complex combination of supply chain issues, surging demand, and a hoarding effect that happens when people know supplies are low, experts say. Adding to the problem are persistent myths and misconceptions about which medications are needed, when, and for which people.
“Shortages are a time when we try and kind of triage these medications to the people who will benefit the most from taking them,” says Nipunie Rajapakse, a pediatric infectious disease physician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
As the infection-laden winter drags on, experts say that better understanding the role that medications play in treating various illnesses could relieve anxiety about empty pharmacy shelves, reduce the harms of unnecessary medication use, and improve supply for people most in need.
Tamiflu
Reports of influenza started to spike in October 2022. By early December, the United States was experiencing one of its earliest and most severe flu seasons in years. As cases surged, so did demand for Tamiflu, also called oseltamivir. The antiviral, according to the CDC, is recommended most for people at high risk from developing severe cases of influenza—a broad category that includes kids under two, adults 65 and up, pregnant and immunocompromised people, and those with asthma, kidney disease, or other underlying conditions.
But anyone can get a prescription for it. And as the flu raged, the medication became difficult to come by in a variety of places. Some pharmacies struggled to keep Tamiflu in stock, and people reported calling multiple stores to get prescriptions filled as the clock ticked: Tamiflu is most effective if started as soon as possible and within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.
Despite that sense of urgency, Tamiflu is unlikely to be the miracle cure that people may expect. In a comprehensive review of 20 studies encompassing more than 24,000 people, researchers with the independent Cochrane Collaboration reported in 2014 that the drug reduced the duration of symptoms in adults by an average of 16 hours—which meant that people were sick for about six days instead of seven.
The drug didn’t make any significant dent in symptom duration for kids. Nor did it reduce the risk of hospitalization or other complications, like pneumonia, bronchitis, or ear infections. But there were side effects, some serious. The drug increased the risk of nausea and vomiting by 4 percent in adults and 5 percent in kids. In some cases, Tamiflu caused psychiatric symptoms, such as depression, delusions, and panic attacks.
Even among those in high-priority groups, data are still not clear on how much of a difference the drug makes, Fox says. “It’s definitely not a cure-all,” she says, and not being able to get it is often not the end of the world. “It doesn't mean that you're going to end up in the hospital. It probably is going to mean that you're not going to have that opportunity to get better half a day earlier.”
Acetaminophen and iBuprofen
Fevers can seem scary, particularly in little kids and especially when numbers start creeping well above triple digits. But misconceptions go both ways about how and when a fever needs to be treated with medication.
One myth is that treatment is necessary to reduce the risk of complications like seizures in children—a belief that is not supported by the bulk of evidence, says Rajapakse. Febrile seizures are triggered by a rapid rise in temperature rather than the high temperature itself, she says, so by the time the fever spikes, it’s too late for the medication to make a difference. Some studies show potential prophylactic benefit, she says, but most suggest that giving acetaminophen or ibuprofen around the clock “does not necessarily prevent a febrile seizure if it's going to happen.”
On the flip side is the belief that acetaminophen impairs the body’s own immune-strengthening response to treat a fever. But experts say these medications are not powerful enough to shut down your immune system and people shouldn’t try to fight off a fever without relief if they’re feeling awful.
If a fever reaches 105, it’s time to go to the emergency room, says Megan Ranney, an emergency physician at the Brown University School of Public Health in Providence, Rhode Island, who adds that aspirin is not safe for kids.
Below emergency levels, Rajapakse recommends treating for comfort. She often sees toddlers in the clinic with 103 degrees fever who are running around and feeling great, and she doesn’t recommend medication in those cases. “Then you can see a child who has a lower fever but who is pretty miserable, who might not be eating and drinking much, who's waking up a lot at night, who's uncomfortable,” she says. “That's a very reasonable scenario to treat a fever in that child.”
Antibiotics
Amoxicillin is a go-to workhorse in pediatrics that is used to fight bacterial ear infections, pneumonia, and strep throat, with relatively few side effects, says Rajapakse. But a shortage of amoxicillin has forced doctors to prescribe other antibiotics that may be harder to tolerate or might not work as well against the bacteria causing infections.
The shortage highlights ongoing issues with excessive antibiotic prescriptions. About a third of antibiotics prescribed to people of all ages are either totally unnecessary or prescribed incorrectly, studies show—which includes using the wrong drug, dose, or duration of treatment. The shortage began just as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization were finishing up a week of meetings dedicated to reducing overuse of antibiotics.
“It’s a continual challenge,” Ranney says. “Every time we start to make a little progress, we fall backwards again.”
Unnecessary antibiotic use not only raises the risk for allergic reactions, kidney problems, and side effects like diarrhea in people who take them, Rajapakse says. The practice also gives bacteria opportunities to develop drug resistance, which is harmful to society.
One reason the problem persists is that people mistakenly believe they need antibiotics for things like ear infections or ongoing coughs, even when viruses are likely to blame. “I can't tell you how many patients show up in the ER saying, ‘I’ve had this cough for two weeks. I know that I just need an antibiotic,’” Ranney says. “We know that if we don't prescribe it, they're going to go to someone else who will.”
Given how busy providers are, Rajapakse says, it can be quicker for them to prescribe something than to take the time to explain why people might not need medication. It can also be tricky to get it right and tempting to err on the side of caution. About 90 percent of sore throats are caused by viruses, for example, but 10 percent are a sign of strep throat, which needs antibiotic treatment to prevent future complications.
To reduce unnecessary antibiotic use, Rajapakse advises parents to ask providers if their child is a candidate for watchful waiting instead of demanding or immediately accepting a prescription, and focusing on other ways to alleviate symptoms, including acetaminophen or ibuprofen, popsicles, humidifiers, and nasal saline. “There are lots of things that families can do that don't involve taking an antibiotic while their child's immune system fights off the virus,” she says.
Even when this flu season ends, drug shortages are likely to remain an ongoing issue, researchers say, as they have been a problem for years. In 2018, well before COVID struck, the FDA pulled together a task force that identified several causes of the drug-shortage crisis, including a lack of incentive for drug companies to produce less profitable drugs and logistical challenges that impede the market’s ability to recover after disruptions. Although the group’s report also suggested solutions, such as financial incentives to produce lower-cost drugs and transparency about when shortages are happening, the problems persist.
Preparation can help people weather the ups and downs. Experts recommend keeping a small supply of over-the-counter medications (no hoarding!) on hand in case you get sick. Boost your arsenal of non-drug strategies for feeling better, like lukewarm baths or tea with honey. Understand your family’s particular risk level so you know if you’ll want to seek a diagnosis as soon as you feel ill and be prescribed antivirals quickly if you need them.
It’s always a good idea to practice good health habits, Ranney adds. “Get your flu shot. Get your booster for COVID. Make sure you wash your hands and wear masks, particularly in crowded indoor locations,” she says. “The best way to avoid needing medications is to avoid getting sick in the first place.”
