Bundeswehr NBC Hazmat Suit ABC Schutzanzug "Zodiac" with Auer M65 protective mask. This picture was taken after being already "encapsulated" for 8 hours "inside" the Zodiac.
Well, just the jacket, at least.
WWII German heavy decontamination suit, predecessor of the famous Zodiak ABC-Schutzanzug.
This is an incredibly well-made chemical suit, made of luxuriously smooth brown rubber and made to extreme quality standards. This particular jacket is dated March of 1938 and has almost no damage, other than minor patches of stiffness and dry rot at the ends of the glove rings.
As usual, it belongs to @bureau-of-mines
Hopefully we can track down a set of the pants for it later on
Heute schon geheiratet? By the way: Was macht das Wetter?

Update 17:24 Uhr. Livestream.
CBRN recon operator ZodSqd training some basic movements for hand-to-hand combat while wearing his hermetically sealed Zodiac individual protective equipment (IPE). Remember the most important in such scenarios is to prevent one’s enemy from unscrewing the gasmask filter or breaking any other seals of the IPE.
ZodSqd undergoing real field exercise "bridgeXplorer" is assigned to make his way to a strategically important bridge at 4 km from his base, to check the static condition of this structure and to return to his base secretly. This mission had to be fullfilled in full protective posture wearing his personal individual protective equipment type "Zodiac", ballistic protection equipment and full long range reconnaissance field pack. This commented video material gives an overview of the required capabilities for cbrn reconnaissance missions und the exercise's training and research purposes.
Commented video regarding the need for in-mission hydration while in heavy protective equipment and a possible solution.
Since dehydration inside the hermetically sealed Zodiak suit is an issue to any operator, a carry-on hydration pack is an important piece of equipment to allow an extension of operation time in a contaminated patrol area. Dehydration is intensified by the human body sweating inside the protective butyl liner preventing any cooling or ventilation. Since the sweat accumulating inside the suit can’t be used for hydration, an external liquid supply is necessary. This of course has to be provided in a CBRN safe manner without breaking the lifesaving seals of the Zodiak equipment.
This video presents a solution for liquid supply from a carry-on reservoir while operating in the German Zodiak protective suit.
Attention! Procedures applied in this video will need further improvement and training to eliminate still existing risks of contamination - for example to the connector's tip.
ZodSqd on patrol into possibly CBRN contaminated area on a cloudy day.
Following the assigned patrol route may mean to the CBRN soldier to cross various obstacles. Therefore proper training not only means to increase endurance in moving on while wearing heavy protective equipment. It is as well required to train in different motion techniques like crawling oder climbing over barriers.
Especially those specialists assigned to do clandestine reconnaissance missions deeply into hostile contaminated areas, have to be trained in various approaching techniques leaving as little evidence as possible. For them it might be lethal to leave a broken gate on their way. Responsible training therefore means to climb over obstacles rather than to remove or destroy them.
Since mobility is severely limited by the heavy protective equipment and the CBRN soldiers field of vision is limited by the gas mask's small eye glasses, this will often mean climbing blindly and to orientate only by touch.
On this photo ZodSqd is displayed while crossing a metal barrier wearing the hermetically sealed Zodiak ensemble, having to balance another 20 kg's of field pack on his back containing both technical reconnaissance equipment and survival equipment needed in case of an unplanned interruption of his mission.
ZodSqd in danger of detection while on patrol in full CBRN protective posture.
From this video we learn about the limitating effects of heavy protective gear on both the wearer’s visual and hearing capability. While filming this video, Zodsqd was approached by a motorized vehicle but did not recognize it in early time. Therefore, after filming had been completed, ZodSqd had to hurry in his effort to hide and to prevent detection by the vehicles passengers.
Situations like this one lead to the acquisition of visual corrective glasses to be worn inside the gasmask.

This video material shows some of the camouflage effects of the Zodiak protective ensemble and it's olive colour.
After carefully checking the area intended for a short in-mission rest, ZodSqd performs a quick hydration from his carry-on water reservoir through his gas mask adapter.
This video was taken after about 30 minutes in CBRN protective posture. In fact there were another 3.5 km to pass on the imposed patrol route and finally another 60 minutes inside the hermetically sealed Zodiak suit. At this point of the mission a first hydration was useful. This and the relatively moderate autumn temperatures helped the operator to conduct the rest of his patrol without major recreational stops.
