It Was You - Chapter 1
Jeon Jungkook tapped his fingers nervously as the car sped through the city.  His plane had been delayed to the point he couldn't stop by his apartment before the party.  He had been able to keep his suit jacket relatively wrinkle-free, but he had slept in his shirt in an awkward position and it wasn't in the best shape.  He sighed.  He was told that under no circumstance could he be late.  It was his eldest hyung's engagement party, and as family, he was expected to be on time and to greet guests.
The car pulled up to the hotel, and he got out, looking up at the glass building.  He tipped the driver as his bag was placed next to him, and he went inside to join the party.
**********
"Jungkook-ah, why do your clothes look like that?"
"Eomma, I came here straight from the airport, I didn't have time to-"  He didn't have time to finish his sentence when his mother ushered him towards the elevator.
"Go up to Joon's room.  Here's the key.  He should have an extra dress shirt that isn't wrinkled."
"But his clothes don't fit-"
"Go."  His mother said, more firmly.  "Quickly, or you'll be late!"
He sighed and went into the elevator.
Jungkook looked at the room number as he walked down the hall.  He used the key card on door 4501 and went in.  He saw his hyung standing in the middle of the suite, knotting his tie.
"Kook!"  Namjoon exclaimed, coming over to greet him and giving him a hug.
"There you are."
"Sorry, hyung.  Eomma sent me up here for another shirt."  She explained sheepishly, gesturing to his wrinkled one.
Namjoon chuckled.  "I don't think I have anything in your size, but we'll have to make do.  How was your flight?"  He asked, as he went through his shirts.
"Too long.  Just delay after delay."  Jungkook rubbed a hand over his face.  "I'm happy not to be flying for a while."
Namjoon smiled, as he handed him a shirt.  "See how this one fits.  It's my biggest one, so if it doesn't you'll have to go get one of Jin-hyung's."
"But his shirts never fit me because his shoulders are too wide."  Jungkook whined.
"Well, then you'd better hope that this does the trick.  Oh, and here is your key card."
Jungkook looked at it.  "I'm not staying here?"
"No, you've got your own rooms.  It's just down the hall."
"Seems expensive to have a suite of rooms just of for me."
Namjoon smiled.  "We own this hotel, Kook. We can do whatever we want.  And now that you're officially and publicly part of the family, it's yours too."
********** Kim Yuna tugged at her dress.
"Yuna!  Stop fidgeting!"  Her mother scolded.
"But it's so restricting!"
"Welcome to our world, Yuna."
"CeCe-unnie, I don't WANT to be part of that world."
"Just hush."  She mother scolded again, trying to smooth out her dress.  "And sit still.  You don't want to be accidentally burned by the hair curler."
Yuna huffed.  She didn't usually whine at these events, and there were plenty of events that she had been to, considering her twin sisters were beauty queens, but this was her sisters' engagement party, which meant she couldn't wear her own clothes and blend in.  She had to stand out.
"Where are your contacts?"
Yuna pushed her glasses up.  "I ran out and only have some blue tinted ones left..."  She trailed off, hoping that the coloured contacts would not be appropriate.
"They'll have to do."
"But they're bright blue!"
"All of the idols where coloured contacts.  Everyone will just think you're trendy.
Yuna sighed, as her pin straight hair was curled beyond recognition.  It was going to be a long night.
**********
Five hours later, Jungkook was leaning against the bar, beginning to fight jet lag and tugging at the too small shirt.  He signalled for another drink.  He went to grab it and accidentally sloshed some over the rim, splashing some onto the woman waiting at the bar next to him.  He must have had more than he thought, as he turn to apologize.  He froze, watching the girl calmly patting herself dry, paying him no mind.  The form fitting dress fit her perfectly.  His eyes rested on the pair of cuffs around her wrists.
"I'm so sorry, here, let me help-"
"It's okay."  She said, smiling and cutting him off.  "It's fine."  The smile didn't quite meet her eyes.
"No, I can-"
"It's fine."  The girl said.  She brushed her curled hair over her shoulder and looked at him.  "Are you okay?"
"I..."  He trailed off.  Those blue contacts look amazing on her, he thought to himself.  Her eyelids had been dusted with powder that seemed to glow.
She waved a hand in front of his face when he didn't answer.  "Hello?"
"I'm..uh, I'm fine."
She tilted her head at him.  "Okay."  She turned to go and then looked back at him.  "Have a good night."  She was stopped when his hand reached out and found hers.
"You're so beautiful.  Did you know that?"
She looked at him closely.  He was most definitely handsome, with his dark long-ish hair, doe-like eyes, and chiselled jaw.  He certainly looked sincere, but also like he'd had a few already.  "Are you always this forward?"  She peered at him. He felt like someone had dumped a bucket of ice on him.  He dropped her hand.  "I'm sorry.  I just..."  He sighed.  "I just came in from a long flight, and maybe also had a few too many to drink.  Not a great combination."
"Sooo...you don't think I'm beautiful?"  She asked.
His eyes widened.  "No!  I mean yes!  I mean, yes I do think so..."  He sputtered. She laughed and put a hand on his arm.  "I'm just kidding.  That was far too easy and I couldn't resist."  She smiled at him, and this time, the smile reached her eyes.  She could be a good host and try to put him at ease again.  "So where did you fly in from?"
**********
A short time later, the pair stumbled into the empty hotel room, limbs entwined.  His memory was hazy, and he couldn't seem to focus on what was happening.  All he could think about was her lips and the places they were trailing.  He gripped her hips and walked her back towards the bed.  She flipped them so that he fell over first, while she straddled him and started tugging on his belt.  He slid one hand up her thigh as he rubbed his face with the other.  He tried to focus, but the jet lag and amount of alcohol he consumed was too much.  All he could do was react to her touch.
She didn't seem to mind leading though.  He fingers were quick and deft.
Screw it, he thought to himself, and flipped her over so that he was now on top.  He put his lips on her neck and sucked.  As she moaned, he took the hand she had gripping the back of his neck and kissed the wrist.  He vaguely saw a small tattoo on her inner wrist, with what looked like fire and some cursive.  He was too far gone to try and figure out what it was.
She pushed him back over and straddled him again.  He groaned as she slowly rode him, pushing them both to the edge.  As they tipped over, all he could see in his minds eye were her blue eyes...
**********
Kim Yuna stepped into her apartment dragging her overnight bag behind her.  She hadn't planned on coming home tonight, but after her tryst with the raven haired stranger, she decided not to stay the night at the hotel, even if the chances of running into him in the morning were slim.  She locked the door behind her and leaned against it.  She caught sight of herself in the hallway mirror.  Her immaculately curled, dark hair was a mess, her makeup was pretty much ruined, and bruises were already starting to form on her neck.
Great, she thought to herself.  Just great.  But she took a breath.  She may look like a mess, but it was totally worth it.
**********
Two weeks later...
"I really appreciate this, hyung."
Hoseok turned to look at the younger man.  "Why are you even taking this job, Kook?  It's not like you need the money now."
Jungkook looked embarrassed and rubbed the back of his neck.  It was true, since he was now welcomed into the family as an official member, he didn't have to scrimp and hustle anymore.  At least not for the time being, anyways.  "Just because they've accepted me doesn't mean I shouldn't work."  He said, sheepishly.  "Besides, I don't officially start for another couple of months, so I want to keep busy."
Hoseok nodded.  "I had heard about your work ethic.  So Tae took you around the office?"
"Yes.  I think I met most of the staff."
"Good, good."  He turned his head as he noticed Jungkook's attention on someone with a black ballcap walking towards a corner cubicle.  "Have you met Yuna?"
The younger man shook his head.
"Come on, I'll introduce you.  She heads the development team and is also my business partner, so you'll have some contact with her."
The office was open concept with the cubicles separated by half walls.  They stepped into Yuna's corner cubicle, and Hobi rapped his knuckles right in front of her keyboard to get her attention.  She yelped and took off her headphones.  They were almost comically large on her, considering how small she was.
"Yuna, meet Jungkook.  He's one of our new game testers."
Yuna turned to look at him, and tensed.  It was him.
"Hi."  Jungkook said shyly, extending a hand for a handshake.
Yuna pushed up her glasses and looked at his tattooed hand.  She recovered quickly and tugged on her long sleeves.  "Hi."  She responded quietly.  "I'm Yuna.”

ONE — Strange Coffee And Stranger People
Out of the two jobs you had, working at a café was one of the highlights of your life. You absolutely loved the café, Zig Zag its name, and the old couple that owned it. The café was bright and bubbly, full of pattern and personality. It definitely lived up to its name. You loved working there, you loved meeting the kind people who would wander in to try the weird and wondrous things on the menu – their stories never failing to interest you.
Zig Zag was located in a quieter part of the city, its usual customers were older, who sat in the seats and liked to just talk to you, or your co-workers. The café did attract all ages; however, people from all over. You had just switched to working the till when he walked through the oddly shaped door.
When you looked up, the bell ringing its strange tune, you knew that you had never seen him before. You were good with faces, and you had never seen his before. It seemed to be raining outside – you hadn’t noticed – because as he shook his head, you could see how wet his curly black hair was. He stepped further into the café, walking straight up to the counter, not taking his eyes off of his phone.
Has he been in before?
You were confused, he didn’t look even remotely shocked or interested by the shocking décor and oddly shaped furniture. Unlike how new people usually are. He wore a leather jacket, one hand – the left side – was stuffed into the jacket’s pocket. You could see a silver shine around his wrist.
Are those… handcuffs?
“Hello and welcome to Zig Zag! How may I help you?” You asked how you were supposed to. At the first sound of your voice, his head snapped up; his eyes meeting yours. You would’ve gasped in surprise, but it happened so quick you weren’t sure if you had imagined it. Imagined the swirl of green in his eyes before they returned to their natural, you assumed, dark colour. Your gazes snapped to each other for a while. You weren’t sure how long exactly, but the two of you only snapped out of it when the lady behind him cleared her throat. He turned to look at the woman, not really moving his body from facing you, before clearing his own throat.
Or maybe he just didn’t want to look at you.
He looked back down to his phone. From your brief glimpse of his screen, you could see the name of one of the café’s drinks.
“An Impresso Expresso Hug Mug with Lava Java and a Tall, Dark and Creamy Molten Jar? Please?” He questioned, reading straight from his phone.
You nod with a smile, “sure thing! Comin’ right up!” and bent down to grab a Hug Mug. The lady behind him cleared her throat again as you popped back up, grabbing your attention. She was a regular of the café, you knew her well.
“Could I ask for two more of your Effervescent Straws?” She asked kindly. You nodded, but from the corner of your eye, you could see him stiffen and close his eyes – in annoyance? – as she affectionately patted your check before walking back to her table.
You turned back to him, pen in hand. “Staying in or taking away?” you asked.
“To go,” was his answer. You nodded.
“Okay, what’s your name?” The question was innocent, but the way his eyes narrowed slightly made you feel a bit, well, weird. It was a few seconds before he replied.
“Sehun.”
With this new knowledge, you quickly wrote his name on the Hug Mug To Go and the Not So Melting Molten Jar. They were slightly different than the glasses the in-café drinks were served in, environment-friendly and easy to throw away, but they were still the same shape. Usually, you would strike up a conversation with your customers but the way Sehunwas looking, staring, right at you threw you off balance. You weren’t entirely sure this man was all good. Your gut felt something off.
You poured the hot drinks into their respective holders – the deep and wide heart-shaped Hug Mug and the tall cone-shaped Molten Jar – placing them into the café’s specially designed drink holder bag, curtesy of Mr Jung, with his name of it. Without taking notice, you had slipped your staff card into the bag as well. It was something all the staff did – telling the customer just who had served them and giving them a voucher as an incentive to come back. It only had your name and picture on it, but it was still information you’d forgot you gave out to strangers.
“Here you go. Have a nice day!” You finished with a small smile, your eyes locking with his once again. When he grabbed the bag, his fingers grazed your own. You were stunned – only a little! – at just how warm they were for how cold and wet it must be outside, but the thought didn’t last long when he turned his back and practically ran out of the café.
You were busy tending to the next customer, but the sound of a motorcycle caught your attention and believe it or not when you looked out the window you swore he was looking back from atop the bike before it sped off.
Maybe you were just going crazy.
You shook your head slightly, as if shaking the thought away, and smiled brightly at the customer in front of you.
“Hello and welcome to Zig Zag! How may I serve you?”
                                                         ••:۞:••
“So you found your mate?”
Sehun nodded. Well, as best as he could while, he laid face down on the couch.
“And you ran away from her?”
A groan.
“After staring her down the entire time, you were near her?”
Another groan.
“Also, why were you, handcuffed?”
Sehun groaned once more, flipping over onto his back before sitting up to face three older members of the pack. Baekhyun, Luhan and Minah sat around him sipping on their own drinks. It was Baekhyun who had sent Sehun out to get the drinks in the first place – his mischievous eyes sparkled when Sehun had come home with a somewhat pained expression. He clutched the heart-shaped mug in his hands, cuddling a couch cushion as the three of them interrogated the youngest.
Minah, who was sipping from a glass of wine, rose an eyebrow. “Yeah. Sehun, why are you, handcuffed?” It wasn’t wrong of them to be curious, but Sehun didn’t exactly want to talk about his small situation with handcuffs. He wanted, no needed, to know how to approach you again – how to integrate you into his life without coming on too strong.
He knew he had missed something when he walked into the café Baekhyun had dragged him to the other day. The air smelt sweeter. He had put it to the baking in the back of the shop – vanilla cinnamon rolls – but once he heard you, your voice, everything made sense. And he was stupid for not noticing before.
However, during the brief time he was with you at the café that day, he did notice several things. He noticed the colour of your hair, – a reddish-brown… auburn? – the length, – long, almost to your waist – the style. He noticed your fringe, a little longer and it’d be in your eyes. He noticed the summer dress you were wearing, despite it pouring with rain and the rose-tinted heart-shaped glasses that sat on your nose. He noticed that you smelt so strongly of vanilla and cinnamon but the underlying scent of rose and honey filtered through to his nose.
He took note of the tone of your voice. It wasn’t bell-like like he had imagined his mates voice to sound like from the stories he heard as a boy. Yet it wasn’t gruff. He couldn’t imagine it being anything other than what it was, and he decided – in his head – that he could listen to you speak for hours and hours on end.
“What am I going to do?” He whined, falling into the couch face first once again.
“Well, we can always talk to h-“ Baekhyun was cut off as Sehun shot up from the couch to glare at him.
“No.” Sehun didn’t have anything against his brothers (and sisters) but the thought of his mate, his mate, getting to know anyone before him was like a wolfsbane-laced knife right to the gut.
Baekhyun seemed to understand because he didn’t push. “Or we could watch her for you-”
“Don’t stalk my mate.” Sehun cut him off once again, grumbling, before settling back down into the couch. He would figure it out – he would – but he had to grovel first, being the dramatic wolf that he was. However, as he plonked his face back into the cushions, he missed the sly smirk that graced Baekhyun’s lips as he stood and left the room.
“Okay, but why are you in handcuffs?!” Minah exclaimed.
                                                        ••:۞:••
Your second job was always exciting. You worked night shifts at a bar – the Kim Family Bar – near your apartment, only a short walk away, and it was never over packed. It was classic and continuously smelled like a case of liquor had been spilt (it probably had) and the customers could get quite rowdy, but you liked it nonetheless. If your days were quirky, your nights were thought-provoking, to put it nicely.
You didn’t work every night, this job was only part-time after all, but you did enjoy it. You enjoyed being busy, it didn’t leave you to overthink about things.
“Here you go, Mr Lim.” You grinned at the middle-aged man who was a familiar face at the bar. He gave you a small smile back as you slid over his usual order of a whiskey-on-the-rocks. A few weeks back, you had learnt that his wife was cheating on him, with another woman, and now he was back with a story of how the divorce filing was going. You liked Mr Lim, he had a kind smile, but you always felt a pang of sadness whenever you saw him in the bar.
Tonight, something different happened. As you finished up your shift, your co-worker Jinyoung coming to take over, a fight broke out outside. You could see several men on motorbikes (really fancy ones that you always thought looked trashy) and several more men in front of them brawling in the middle of the street.
You rolled your eyes, shifting your camel-coloured faux-fur-lined jacket closer over your body. It was a cold night, as it usually was, but at least it wasn’t raining. Your boss, Mrs Kim, always allowed you to wear your own clothes during your shift, as long as the colour scheme and theme of the bar was adhered to. So, you paired with your black high-waisted skinny jeans (with rips at the knees - you knew of style trends) with an off-shoulder red cropped top. It covered your torso enough to not be inappropriate, but it worked with the bar’s image. Though, you usually misjudged how cold it could get. At least you didn’t have to wear flimsy high heels. You had to walk past the fighting cluster of men to get home, whichever way you walked, so you sighed and just started walking.
You could take care of yourself.
Within a few minutes of walking, you felt something off. Maybe it was your paranoid brain playing tricks, but you could swear you heard footsteps. You slowed down your pace slightly, coming to a stop as you bent down to ‘tie your shoelaces.’ While on the floor, you turned your head slightly, looking behind you.
You were right – two figures dashed out of sight as if they could see you looking. Being a naturally cautious person, you knew you wouldn’t go home with people following you – certainly not when Euina would be waiting. So, making up your mind, you took a sharp right and cut into an alleyway. You knew these streets, you had lived on them for well over twelve years, and you knew where the best hiding spaces were.
Soon enough, those two figures made their way into the alley, walking further than you had stopped to hide. You couldn’t hear them entirely, but you did make out a few words. “Sehun,” “kill us” and “lost her.” You stopped in your tracks slightly.
Sehun? As in the man from the café a few days ago? Did he have a problem with me or something? You shook the feeling from your body and removed yourself from your little hide-out, fleeting the other way in the hopes of losing them. That hope was short-lived.
“There she is!” A man’s voice exclaimed, almost… excitedly? You didn’t want to know why. Soon enough, the two of them had caught up, and before they could lay a hand on you, you knew what you had to do to get rid of them.
You whirled around to face them, it must have shocked them because the blonde-haired one’s eyes widened, and as you sent a not-so-light kick to his chest, he stumbled back. You didn’t want to wait for the other to attack you first. They were both obviously more durable than you, so you went first.
You sent three punches to the silver-haired one’s jaw – because he was too tall to clock on the cheek without stretching too much – and as the blonde one caught his footing you sent another kick his way, watching as he fell to the floor. You ducked under the tall one’s arm, ignoring the words coming out of their mouths, and decided on the move that would floor him too. Maybe it wasn’t the best of moves, but it was one of the only ones that would work with your height difference. You jumped slightly and wrapped your legs around his waist, twisting your own and tipping his balance. You didn’t fall to the floor with him as you unhooked yourself just as fast and flipped away from them.
Then, you ran.
“Chanyeol?” Groaned Baekhyun from the floor.
“Yeah?”
“Let's not tell anyone about this.”
“Agreed.”
They would never hear the end of it from the pack and Sehun would definitely kill them, and they were both too young and pretty for that.
How was that? Any good? Tell me what you think!

 Chapter 1
Chapter 3
A card. A card. A card.
On and on it rambled in his brain, thundering and stabbing everything that made up his matter. He could see the doctor’s struggling to figure out what his problem was, could hear his parents voices in worry. Overall the eldritch horrific voice kept repeating that nauseating tortuous phrase and it kept overpowering everything of his existence.
“Hey we’ve got another couple of kids that fainted today.” Stephan’s eyes opened wide, the entity deemed best as the Shadow Realm crawling from his lids invisibly forcing Stephan to look at the talking doctors.
“Another no obvious cause case?”
“Yeah.” Stephan watched as the sloppy goo cover his hand, the iv that was placed in his body was sucked out painfully. He wanted to cry, he wanted to scream, but the goo controlled him like a puppet and his body moved. He must have been invisible considering the talking doctors ignored him and his sloppy steps.
“Which room are the new kids in?” The goo that covered his body forced him still to listen to the next words. The other person in the conversation answered and to Stephan’s lack of surprise, the puppeteering continued. His body sludged towards the offered number, the nurses and fellow patients completely ignorant to his presence as the ugly goop dragged him. Stephan felt tears drop from his eyes from the pain his body screeched at him and those tears poured out quicker as he entered the room, seeing Yuna lying down on a bed. Stephan’s hand bent painfully, reaching for his deck. The soul staining remark of ‘A card’ echoed and came faster and faster, a tirade of chaos as the twisted hand grabbed his most treasured monster. A painful sob made it way out of his mouth, this was not only his first monster card ever, it was his strongest. His body trudged to the little table by Yuna’s bedside and with more force than necessary his hand twisted to try and force the card down.
“Someone’s main deck is a part of their soul. I would never take someone’s soul.” Stephan glanced over to the sleeping figure as the gloop controlling his body paused from the words. Where had that come from? It sounded like Yuna, but the girl had not reacted since he was forced in. Stephan’s hand and card withdrew and despite all of his pain, he felt elation as the card was put back in his deck. The goop purposely twisted his wrist and traveled to each card he had. This was his main deck, if whoever spoke was speaking the truth and the Shadow Realm took those words to heart than he wouldn’t be able to get rid of any of these cards. Which was both great and terrible. Stephan wanted to be free from this torment, but the feelings of panic and anxiety of even putting his first card down was downright awful.  His hand continued to twist, full of indecision for a few minutes.
“Tsukasa!” Distracted by the distraught newcomer, the Shadow Realm actually shifted Stephan to focus on the unhappy person. Stephan saw the other bed in the room held the duelist like the woman had called out. A nurse came from behind her, “Do you have any idea how this happened yet?” The woman asking the question was short with short brown hair, except with small parts of blonde mixed in. Stephan surmised that this was likely Tsukasa’s mom, her eyes were dark like his.
“I’m sorry ma’am, we don’t yet know.” The older woman touched Tsukasa forehead, brushing away part of his bangs. “But it doesn’t look like he’s in a terrible condition, he’s still breathing on his own and his blood pressure and temperature is normal.” The nurse tried to calm the mother down. “It’s likely he’s overworked.” The mother frowned at that, continuing to brush her son’s hair. After a minute, the nurse nodded and walked to Yuna’s bed, Stephan screaming as his now useless hand focused on his deck again.
The nurse fixed Yuna’s sheets, brushing the girl’s bangs in imitation of the loving mother for the boy in the other bed. “You on the other hand…” The nurse muttered lowly before going back to the mother. “Mrs. Ayumu can you please follow me to fill out the rest of the paperwork?” The older woman nodded numbly, following the nurse outside the room. The Shadow Realm finally made a decision during what may as well have been the outside world and Stephan finally felt relief as the card was placed on the table. It was a card he had duplicates of, he could replace it easily if needed.
Stephan screamed as the Shadow Realm let go and he fell forward, all of the painful things it had done to him rushed to his conscious. His left hand ruined from the break. The nurse and Mrs. Ayumu rushed in immediately and stared shocked at the sudden appearance of the screaming teenager.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Do you think big sis Yuna will be okay?” Claire asked Kayo, tugging on his long sleeve with a worried look. Kayo brushed her off and glared down at the ground. They had managed to get help and were unfortunately relegated to the third professor of the cram school, who promptly shoved the four children into a study room.
“Ryu were there any duel spirits that could tell you what that was?” Kayo asked his own question, studying the mute. Ryu stared down at his sketchbook with a haunted expression, upsetting the pink-haired boy even more. What was all that?
“So she really is a monster.” Sakura remarked coldy from her seat, her legs swinging childishly despite her tone.
“Don’t call big sis that!” Claire shouted, approaching Sakura angrily. Sakura just gave her a harsh stare, her feet still swinging with desperate energy.
“Well what else can make what happened happen?” Claire’s face twisted with a frown and she huffed and visibly stomped her feet.
“Well...ma-maybe it’s Ayumu’s fault!” Claire offered. “He was talking about something weird right?”
“Getting rid of Yuna’s darkness…” Kayo muttered as Sakura scoffed.
“Then doesn’t that mean that Ayumu should have won that duel?” Claire frowned at her question. “We should have been cheering him on to get rid of the monst-” Sakura screamed as Claire tackled her, the two of them falling from the chair.
“Stop!” Kayo yelled, hissing as he had to get himself involved with the scuffle, the three of them making a mess. Ryu’s hand trembled as the trio kept bumping into desks and chairs, adult words spilling out of all of their mouths with ease. The green-haired boy started to write in his sketchbook and the only thing that paused the fight was a particularly loud shriek from Claire as Kayo started to pull on her long hair.
“Let go, let go, let go-” she continuously whined and Kayo cried in pain as Sakura harshly pinched his back, yelling the same thing as Claire.
“I’ll let-OW-go if you-STOP,” Kayo swung at Sakura who switched to his other side to continue the painful pinches. The three would have continued if not for Ryu throwing his large sketchbook at the three. They simultaneously looked to see Ryu shaking and crying. Kayo had no problem letting go of his advantage and rushed to the taller with Claire and Sakura following him. “Ryu I’m sorry.” The boy shook his head and pointed at the forgotten weapon. Being the closest, Sakura picked it up and handed it back to the boy, looking sulky.
“I don’t know what any of that was, and there were no nearby duel monsters to ask, but whatever it is, it’s scary.” Kayo frowned at the words.
“...Yeah, it was scary.” Claire was the first to speak, worry emitting from her.
“Whenever I got close to it, my tummy hurt.” Claire held her hands close to said spot, “I can’t imagine how it felt for big sis or Ayumu.” At her words, Sakura stilled. “I just want to know if they’ll be okay.” Kayo swallowed the sudden abundance of saliva in his mouth and nervously remarked,
“I’m sure they are.”
“Yeah.” Sakura backed his words, “I’m sure they’ll be okay.” She put her hand on Claire’s shoulder, reminding Kayo that despite of the venom the three could carry between them, it was easily cured when they actually shared their feelings. Kayo put his own hand on Ryu’s shoulder,
“What about you? Will you be okay?” Ryu held his sketchbook close to his chest and that just told Kayo that his friend didn’t know.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was dark. An aching eerily dark that made her think she was blind because she couldn’t see any part of her body. Couldn’t even really feel like she HAD a body. Then noise started shrieking and filtering into her senses, an abnormal amount of emotional cries attacked her at a frenzy of panic, it felt like she was going to be crushed by it.
And she might have been if she didn’t wake up. Yuna panted, throwing the blanket she had on her off immediately. She continued to breathe harshly, wiping off the sweat that built on her face. The young woman eventually was able to calm down, and she stared, realizing she was in a hospital room. She sighed then started to rub her forehead, the place where the eye normally appeared ached. Her arms and legs felt the same.
“What happened?” She asked out loud, sighing into the room. She started to look for her cellphone, she needed to contact her parents if it wasn’t too late. She jumped when in her search a Duel Monsters card fell to the ground.
Curiously she picked it up and saw it was a Kidmodo Dragon. She gave the card a small smile and put it back from where it fell, thinking she would turn it in the lost and found in the morning, then finally finding her cellphone. As she moved to call, likely to leave a voice message because it was 9 at night, Yuna blinked as the card fell from its spot to the ground once again as she pressed the only phone number she had saved.
Yuna stared at the Duel Monster card with confusion. She knew she had put it away from the corner to fall, so how did it get on the ground? She looked at the window to the room and saw it wasn’t open for a breeze. Before she could think anymore, the phone was answered.
“Hello?” It was her dad, sounding like he was forced awake from bed. Drat.
“Hey! Sorry to wake you up, just making the usual call in.” She tried to beam a smile through the phone. Her father was silent so she continued, “I’m calling a little late because I was out all day, having a ton of fun with some friends.”
“Is that so?”
“Yup! I’ll go ahead and let you go now, you head back to sleep and I’ll make a full report tomorrow night, okay?” Her father made a grunting noise before hanging up on her. She sighed, putting her cell phone away and then turned back to pick up the Kidmodo Dragon. She gave it smile again, “Don’t worry little guy, I’ll put you somewhere where your owner will come back for-”
“That’s yours.” Yuna shrieked, jumping visibly at the voice that came from behind what she thought was a wall. Yuna tip-toed to the wall and pushed it, feeling it was softer than wood.
“Tsukasa!” She gasped, then covered her mouth for her volume. “You’re okay! I’m glad-” his expression stopped the rest of her sentence. She looked away at the unmitigated anger molded into the brunet’s face. “Um...you said this is mine?” She tried to change the subject, displaying the card for visibility. Tsukasa’s face did not change, but he did answer her,
“Stephan gave that to you. Lousy choice if you ask me.” He glared away from her, facing the wall of the room they shared. Yuna looked down at the card, frowning. Why did Stephan give her the card? She nodded to herself,
“I’m going to go visit him.” Tsukasa’s eyes darted to her and before she could move out of the room he hissed,
“He was moved into the ICU, and it’s late at night, there wouldn’t be anyway to get to him...unless you use your dark magic maybe.” Yuna felt her back bristle, her eyes appearing all over her with the frustration from his words. Her multiple eyes blinked as she started to worry instead of being angry. Stephan really was in bad shape, huh? That made her question why she had gotten the card even more. Yuna turned to look at the scary brunet.
“You said you’re a light to destroy a great darkness.” She grabbed her arm unsure, “Do-do you know more? You seem so sure that I’m...cursed.” Yuna stated awkwardly, almost quiet because what if she really was? Tsukasa stared at his wall, his expression stony and neutral. “I wasn’t born with these eyes.” She admitted to him, hoping to get him to speak more of the destiny he seemed to be sure of.
Tsukasa glanced at her so she continued, “I don’t know why I suddenly got these eyes, my earliest memory of them was when I was much younger.” She glanced down at the ground, the shameful moment flooding into her mind easily. She didn't have many possessions, her family poor even then and she was mindful of her parents time. She was pretty sure her mother had taken weeks to make her the stuffed rabbit. Three of her classmates were trying to steal the toy, and in all of their fury of tug of war, they had ripped the rabbit in half.
“I HOPE YOU GET EATEN BY A MONSTER!”
Yuna paled under Tsukasa’s gaze on her. Her memory supplying her with the fact that those three classmates had disappeared after that day.
“Your eyes appeared after yelling that?” He asked, and she nodded hesitantly. The young woman then looked up to process what the other was possibly thinking, but he looked completely shut off.
“Do you know something Tsukasa?” She asked again. The boy answered with silence and purposely looking away from her. She felt an ugly feeling roam everywhere in her body before settling in her stomach. The hand without the Kidmodo Dragon rubbed one of her eyes that could feel the sting of sadness. She closed the wall and climbed into her bed. Despite the depression that was ravaging her stomach and slowly crawling up to her chest, she brought the Duel Monsters card into view. Her first ever actual Duel Card. A card that would make a part of her soul when she got at least 38 more for a whole deck.
It was small, weak, and only useful for its special effect. A part of her stifled a frustrated giggle. She brought it to her forehead, and shivered slightly when felt like her mystical eye blinked at it. She wasn’t feeling angry and she had no way of comprehending why it appeared during the duel. So many weird and mysterious things were happening, and the only one who may potentially had answers despised her. “We’re two of a kind, aren’t we Kidmodo Dragon?” She asked it, giving the card a sincere smile. She then took off her necklace and put the card to stack upon the blank Duel Monsters card.
She gave the wall separating the two teens one long stare, feeling tension claw on her shoulders. Just what was going to happen to her in the future? She took a deep breathe through her nose and smacked her cheeks. It didn’t matter, she would pull through with her best, just like her heroes. “Goodnight Tsukasa.” She said out loud and turned away, falling asleep despite all negative emotions trying to nerve her to stay awake.
On the other side of the wall, Tsukasa glared at the way to where Yuna laid. The forced lesson of human lives being more important was true, he knew. A voice repeatedly whispered in the back of his mind to enforce that thought. Tsukasa agreed with the voice, but Yuna Tatsumi was in no way human, so she was free game to do whatever he wanted with her life.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elisa yawned under her umbrella, her younger brother glaring up at her as the umbrella dipped away from him to get a little rain on his shoulder.
“Sis come on!” He hit her arm and she hit his back.
“A little water isn’t going to kill you.”
“The problem is that it isn’t going to be a little with you tilting it back and forth!” He shoved his way against her side, Elisa scoffing as he got her wet. The two stayed close, both bumping into each other purposely with force until they made it to the school. Her brother glared at the school and Elisa snickered.
“Raúl, you shy to meet your classmates?” He elbowed her in embarrassment. “Oh no, poor little Raúl,” she held her hands to her face, “I’m so shy I’d be content to hide in a hole for the rest of my life.” Raúl growed and stomped into the building with obvious hatred with each step. Elisa laughed, reaching the building after him. It wasn’t rare for people to get sick in this city due to the constant rainfall, and unfortunately Raúl and baby sister Sierra had both came down with terrible colds and Elisa volunteered herself to stay home to take care of them for her mother and father.
Unfortunately that also meant she had missed the last three days, which meant,
“Ah the Flores siblings.” Elisa did her best to give the student council president a neutral expression. Raúl also did his best to appear nonchalant, but Elisa easily saw him shifting to be by her side. Lyla held out her hand, “Got your passes?” Elisa made a small noise and motioned to her little brother. The freshman pulled out both of their passes, each with new stamps on them for their absences. Due to the not incredibly rare disappearances of students because of sickness the passes were required to be stamped by either a parent or doctor.
Lyla scanned the passes and nodded, handing them back. “Very well, head to class. Oh,” Lyla stopped Elisa from moving pass her, “if you see Ayumu today please tell me.” Elisa rose an eyebrow. “He and that transfer student haven’t come in today.” Transfer student? Seeing her confusion, Lyla nodded, explaining “You had a transfer student come into your class, Yuna Tatsumi, I think?” Well it was weird for Tsukasa not to be around, but she had no clue about this Yuna Tatsumi.
“Good morning!” Elisa jumped as Yuna splashed into the building. Lyla gave the young girl a glare, “Sorry I’m a little late,” Yuna spoke, fumbling around her uniform, “They didn’t want to let me go right away after a few tests-” She must have found what she was looking for because she gave a little cheerful ‘aha’ and handed it to Lyla. Lyla glanced at the paper she was handed,
“Where’s Ayumu, Tatsumi?” Yuna blinked. She looked away,
“Why would you assume I would know where he is?” Elisa stayed as her brother ran off seeing an obvious distraction for the Student Council. This was a transfer student for her class, huh? Lyla gave the other a firm glare. Yuna squirmed under her gaze but said nothing. After the stare-down, Lyla sighed,
“Very well, go to class, both of you.” Lyla hissed and the two made their way into the building. Elisa had taken the time to study the uncomfortable girl while she was being glared at.
“My name’s Elisa Flores,” she introduced herself as they made their way further into the building. “You can call me Elly.” She determined and Yuna blinked at her friendly hand. The other teenager gave her a big smile.
“Okay, my name’s Yuna Tatsumi. You can call me Yuna.” She giggled for some reason and Elisa chuckled in reply. As the two made their way to their classroom, Yuna noted out loud, “Are you a student of,” she paused in memory, “2-C?” Elisa nodded and Yuna gave her a dazzling smile. “Awesome.”
“Yeah.” Elisa grabbed the door and could hear the nonsensical yammering of the many mixed, but as soon as she opened it, the noise ceased to stare at the two coming in. Elisa blinked as she watched everyone quietly following their gazes to where Yuna sat, the desk behind Tsukasa’s Elisa noted. Elisa frowned, walking in and noticing that everyone continued to stare at the tri-colored girl near the front. Her seat was more by the back and she was immediately bombarded by whispers of gossip.
“I heard Yuna was the one who put Stephan in the hospital.”
“I heard she beat Tsukasa in a duel.”
“I heard-”
“Did you see-” Elisa glared pointedly at the other teenagers around her. She then looked at the girl near the front, seeing she was either deaf or ignoring all of the chatter around her as her shoulders and back stayed straight and Elisa imagined her eyes were strictly on the board, waiting for the teacher to say something. The noise continued in the back, building on Elisa’s temple with each remark. Elisa may not really know the girl near the front, nor why everyone was talking about her, but enough was enough.
“Shut up!” Elisa slammed her hands her desk, everyone jumping to her action.
“Ms. Flores!” Elisa jumped in response as the teacher immediately started to lecture her and put detention on her. A hushed amount of giggling surrounded her, “Ms. Tatsumi, please escort her to the children after school.”
“They’re still the punishment?” Yuna queried and Elisa raised her eyebrow at the question.
“We still haven’t found a substitute, but I’m sure just adding this girl,” the teacher arched their heard towards Elisa, “will more than enough make it an actual punishment.” Yuna frowned at the teacher but nodded, giving Elisa a sympathetic nod. Elisa sighed, giving everyone around her one final glare, promising a fist to their mouths if they decided to speak anyway.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Did you have a headache?” Yuna asked the darker teen. She had natural tanned skin, black hair with purple tints in it, and her eyes were a bright color. The other thing that stood out about her to Yuna was the bright red scarf wrapped around her neck. Yuna pondered momentarily if Elisa had to go out of the way to request to wear the item like she had to. Elisa blinked at her, obviously confused as they made their way to the cram school. “I mean, you said shut up out of nowhere.” She amended to explain her thoughts.
“Oh, that...no I didn’t have a headache.” Elisa gave her a long stare before remarking, “Did you not hear everyone?” Yuna tilted her head.
“Hear?”
“Nevermind.” Elisa gave a loud sigh, putting her arms behind her head as they continued walking. “So the punishment this year was watching the preschool brats huh?”
“They’re in elementary, and they’re not that bratty.” Yuna defended with a bit of a pout on her face. Elisa chuckled lightly,
“Yeah? I’ve heard a lot of crazy rumors about them.”
“Like what?” Genuinely curious, Yuna turned around, walking backwards. Giving the curious teen a demonic grin she spoke,
“Supposedly they’ve driven people insane, summoning monsters and cursing their lives with terror.” Elisa didn’t believe a bit of it, but she did always like teasing people, “Darkness surrounds those who associate with those brats, that’s why they’re all together because no one knows what else to do with them.” Yuna just gave Elisa a confused expression. Elisa watched as the confused expression shifted to understanding.
If there were such rumors surrounding them all the time, then them not reacting negatively to her eyes made a lot more sense. Yuna turned back around and held her card close to her heart. The monster rumor probably came because of Ryu’s ability to see Duel Monsters, and whatever else Elly was talking about was likely unhappy circumstances that happened. Or maybe...Yuna started walking a little faster. Elisa made a noise but jogged after the girl.
“Tasumi, you’re here.” Ms. Mokfu spoke with surprise in her voice. “Should you be-” her eyes drifted to Elisa and she chuckled, “Oh, I guess you were just helping some-”
“No I’m here to do my duty as normal Ms. Mokfu.” Ms. Mokfu audibly gasped.
“Are you sure? I mean it’s not a normal thing for someone to pass out due to a duel around here, we’ve put so many safeguards to make sure that doesn’t happen,” Elisa raised her eyebrows with slight shock at what the teacher was admitting. “So if you need to take a day off-” Yuna gave the older woman a determined stare,
“I don’t, thank you Ms. Moku.” Yuna walked past the blonde teacher and headed to the little building off from the cram school. Ms. Mokfu stared with her mouth agape and simply nodded as Elisa waved at her and followed the tri-colored teen. As soon as they were out of ear distance, Ms. Mokfu stood up straight, remarking underneath her breath,
“Hey, was it just me or was there a duel spirit following Tatsumi?”
“No, that was certainly a Kidmodo Dragon.”
“That wasn’t there before, right?”
“No.” Guardian Angel Joan answered plainly. Ms. Mokfu frowned.
“Something’s stirring in the air, is it?” The Duel Monster stood silently by her guard’s side, agreeing silently with a blatant tension of a warrior. For the group of elementary students, they stirred as Yuna walked into the building. A tension surrounded the group, the obvious feeling of confusion and unknowing wrecking possible tempers. The four children jumped as Yuna knelt to the ground, taking the position of penance. Elisa was about to remark from behind her when Yuna spoke,
“I don’t know what happened yesterday. I know it was scary, and Tsukasa refuses to talk to me about it.” Oh? She was on a first name basis with Ayumu? Elisa was fairly certain she had never heard anyone having that privilege. “But I do know one thing,  and this I can promise you.” Everyone watched as the dark-eyed teen brought a fist near her heart, over the card she hung across her neck. “I will not leave you guys. I’ll figure out what happened with you.” With her strong statement, she was left to be stared at.
“Big sis Yuna!” Claire was the first to say anything, immediately stumbling over to her, grasping the teen with a shocking amount of tears. Yuna grabbed the blonde, expecting her to be quicker than the others. Yuna blinked as Ryu was the second to move up to her, and even more surprising when he stretched his arms around her shoulders for a hug. Kayo must have came over because of Ryu but Yuna appreciated it nonetheless. Sakura was the only one who didn’t move closer.
“Um, I don’t know what’s going on here,” Elisa finally spoke, rubbing the back of her head sensing the awkwardness of the five. “But uh, I’m here to get my detention done and out of the way.” She lamely finished and watched the black girl in the room turn her nose at her and walk to a corner with a book, pick it up and start reading. Yuna lifted herself up and Elisa’s mouth twitched seeing the young woman’s eyes looked a little clouded.
Regardless Yuna helped Elisa through her detention easily, the children despite behind often described as demons seemed to get along with Yuna relatively well. When dinner was to start, Yuna told Elisa,
“Elly please take everyone to the cram school’s cafeteria, they usually get fed in here.”
“Gotta go to the bathroom?” Yuna laughed at the question,
“No, I’m just going to Sakura real quick,” Elisa noted that Sakura had at some time during the gathering had grabbed Yuna’s hand. “We’ll catch up.” Elisa nodded and gathered the giggling madly Claire by arm and piggy backed Ryu who’s throat against her skull made a nice vibration of cheer while Kayo demanded Elisa be careful with him. As the group left, Yuna squat down to the girl who was glaring at the ground.
“I think you’re a monster.” The sting of tears wanted to erupt but Yuna just bit her lip, hoping the girl would continue. “I’m the only one who thinks Ayumu should have beat you.” Yuna couldn’t help the sharp hurt chuckle escape. Sakura looked at her angrily.
“Yeah, you might be right Sakura.” Sakura looked taken aback at her confirmation. “I might be a monster that should have been beaten by Tsukasa, but I wasn’t, so all I can do is go under the assumption I’m not actually a monster.” She gave the girl a sorrowful smile, holding back on the hurt that was continue to build and build. “And even if I am a monster, I won’t hurt you guys, and that won’t change.”
“You could hurt other people.” Like Tsukasa was unspoken. Yuna clutched her arms, holding her trembling unstable emotions.  Seeing as the older teen didn’t have an answer to her scathing sentence, Sakura continued, “But...as long as you really mean you won’t hurt us. Then I guess I don’t care.” Yuna blinked as Sakura brushed a part of her hair, looking obnoxiously snobby. The young girl moved to exit the building, turning around to give the teen a raspberry, negating the uptight classy girl she was to be childish. Yuna stared at the open door, slowly getting up.
No one could possibly know what was going to happen from now on, but Yuna knew that she had to face it head on, to protect those she wanted to be friends with. Yuna marched after, the sun trying to fall piercing her eyes with its glare. Just believe in yourself, the constant lesson given by each of the Kings in their own way.
She could do that.
Probably.
