okay so i’ve seen spencer reid x dumb reader, but i’ve never seen dumb dumb reader. like my level of dumbness, so i decided to write an imagine, it’s my first one so pls be nice :((.
never in my life did i see myself dating someone like spencer. i mean how could i, the man had more phds than what i could keep up with. i didn’t even finish high school, dropping out at 16 because i thought school was a waste of time (luckily, i turned out okay and made good money as a nail tech). i expected to see myself with a drug dealer that i needed to bail out every weekend.
but no, i landed the one and only dr. spencer’s reid. we met at a birthday party at jj’s house, it was for her son henry. she was a frequent client of mine, and got along well with her. so much so that she invited me to her son’s birthday party, i can still remember how i met him.
i raised your fist to knock on the door. the cars that were parked in the driveway and street made me a tad bit nervous, i probably didn’t know any of these people. i’ve been to jj’s house before for a coffee, but had never met any of her other friends.
i was snapped out of my thoughts when jj opened the door, greeting me with a ‘hi’ and a hug. “i’m so glad you could make it!”, said jj, turning around and grabbing my hand, dragging me through the house. she stopped at the dining table where the adults were gathered. ‘wow never thought i’d make it to the adult table at parties’ i thought to myself.
“guys this is y/n, she’s my nail lady”, introduced jj, i smiled and waved. “this is rossi, emily, spencer, hotch, and derek and penelope are around somewhere”, she said as the introduced everyone to me. i shook hands with every person but got stood up when i got to a tall lanky guy with brown hair and honey brown eyes just stared at my hand.
“the number of pathogens and bacteria passed during a handshake is staggering, it’s actually safer to kiss”, he said, looking up to meet my eyes. i raised my eyebrows and blinked a few times. “you want to kiss?”, i said confusingly, retracting my hand to my side. i saw his cheeks turn a deep pink as the people around us snickered. “n-no, i mean i don’t shake hands”, he said looking down.
“come on, take a seat”, jj had a smile on her face as she pulled out a chair for me, i said a thank you and sat down. i don’t know how but i had attracted his attention and he ended up asking for my number.
i don’t remember the time i found out he was a genius, maybe if i think hard enough i’ll remember. however, i do remember the time he found out i was a dumbass. we were maybe three months into the relationship, i was sleeping over at his apartment.
i stared at my phone with scrunched eyebrows and thoughts running a million miles a second. my eyes scanned through the article title ‘US Debt Reaches $17 Million’. i looked over to spencer, who was sitting up next to me in bed turning pages of a book each second.
“hey spence”, he turned his head from his book to my eyes. “you know how the government is in debt”, i started, he nodded his head. “why don’t they just print more money to pay it off”, i finished.
“if the government prints more money they will suffer hyperinflation”, he said simply. my face remained expressionless, my eyes never leaving his. “what does that mean”, i said quietly.
“in 2008, zimbabwe suffered from hyperinflation because of a bad presidency. the president has decided to print more money to pay off his debt, but really he just worsened the state of his economy. the prices for milk or eggs doubled every 24 hours, reaching a price of over $1000. they tried to fix the problem by...”, my mind drowned out the words he was saying, or rather i couldn’t keep up. i have no idea what zimbabwe is but i think that’s a country. i desperately hanged on to every word he said, trying to understand him.
“do you get it now?”, asked spence after another minute of him explaining . i nodded my head rapidly. ‘not really’, i thought. i looked down at my phone and scrolled past the article, wanting the topic to end.
“do you really?”, he asked, his eyes trained on me. “no”, i said as i bursted out laughing. “you lost me at zimbabwe”, a smile rose on his lips.
“what didn’t you understand?”, he asked with a small smile on his face. i loved how willing he was to repeat himself to me.
“honestly spence, just leave it at that. there’s a reason i dropped out”, i said jokingly.
“you dropped out of college? what were you majoring in?”, he asked interested. i started laughing harder than before, my laughter filling the room. his eyes searching my figure, trying to figure out what was funny.
“i dropped out of high school”, i said in between laughs, tears starting to form in my eyes. he just stared at my laughing figure, not knowing what to say or do. i scooted closer to him and wrapped my arms around him.
“how do you feel about that? knowing your girlfriend’s a little dumby”, i said teasingly, resting my chin on his chest. a smile grew on his face.
“it’s okay, she’s my dumby”, he said as he buried his face in my neck. “that’s so corny”, i said giggling, running my hand through his hair. i started giggling harder when he started nipping at my skin.
“come on, let’s go teach you some math”, he said as he pulled away. he had his hand in mine as pulled me out of bed.
