Government passed over 171 candidates to pick Bullingdon Club ‘chum’ of Boris Johnson for sleaze watchdog role
Government passed over 171 candidates to pick Bullingdon Club ‘chum’ of Boris Johnson for sleaze watchdog role
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The government passed over 171 candidates to pick a Bullingdon Club “chum” of Boris Johnson‘s to sit on a sleaze watchdog, ministers have admitted.
Ewen Fergusson, a member of Oxford’s infamous dining club at the same time as the prime minister, was handed the role last month – a decision branded “pathetic” by the committee’s former chair.
In an answer to a written parliamentary question from Labour, Cabinet Office minister Chloe Smith said the government had received 173 applications for the two vacancies on the committee.
The longtime friend of the prime minister was appointed to scrutinise him after an advisory panel “carefully considered all applications”, she said.
But Labour said friends of the prime minister should be disqualified from the role on the Standards In Public Life Committee, given its job scrutinising members of the government, including Mr Johnson.
“Being Boris Johnson’s chum from the Bullingdon Club does not qualify you to sit on the watchdog that is supposed to crack down on sleaze and cronyism in our politics. In fact, it should disqualify you,” deputy leader Angela Rayner told The Independent.
“This appointment is an utter joke, and out of 173 applicants of course the Bullingdon Boy fits the job description of marking the Prime Minister’s homework.
“Instead of the Prime Minister appointing his mates to committees we need a fully independent integrity and ethics commission to oversee and stamp out the rampant sleaze and cronyism coming from Downing Street that has polluted our democracy.”
In an answer slipped out after MPs went back to their constituencies for recess, Ms Smith acknowledged that Mr Johnson was given the ultimate say on which of the candidates to appoint following a shortlisting process led by Lord Evans, the chair of the committee.
The latest revelation comes after the Council of Europe’s anti-corruption and integrity watchdog warned in June that the British government has ignored instructions to strengthen UK anti-corruption controls – in a scathing report that gave the government its lowest compliance marks ever.
The row over the weaknesses in the UK’s integrity oversight comes after a series of scandals around lobbying an access to government ministers.
In the latest set of concerns, on Monday it emerged that MPs with second jobs are facing scrutiny over worries that they could exploit a lobbying loophole.
Examples include Tory MP Alun Cairns, vice-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on taxis, which agreed to “continue pressuring the government to provide urgent financial support for taxi drivers”.

“His application was carefully considered on its merits by the Advisory Assessment Panel, chaired by Lord Evans, which interviewed him and found that he was suitable for appointment.”

2020 British Open will be canceled because of coronavirus pandemic, according to report
Tumblr media

The first outright cancelation of a 2020 men’s golf major due to the coronavirus pandemic will be the British Open, according to a report from Golf Digest. The report came late Wednesday night in the United States, with Joel Beall and Brian Wacker citing multiple sources that the oldest major championship in golf, scheduled for mid July, will not take place this year. They added that the decision could be formally announced as early as Thursday, April 2.
The Golf Digest report indicates the R&A, the governing body that operates the Open, was waiting for Wimbledon to cancel its 2020 championships, and that became official on Wednesday. The first two men’s majors of the season, the Masters (originally scheduled for April) and PGA Championship (May), were postponed. The third, the U.S. Open, will be postponed as well, according to a New York Post report last week. The Open, the fourth major of the men’s golf calendar, will not opt for a similar postponement.
The reason for this decision in contrast with the other three men’s majors has to do with The Open’s insurance policy, according to the report. The R&A has a policy, like Wimbledon, that covers a pandemic but they would have to cancel by a certain date in order to trigger and collect under the policy. A source told Digest that the R&A is the “most insured” of the major tournaments.
The PGA Tour in the U.S. has already canceled eight weeks of events so far, running from mid March into mid May. It’s likely that organization will cancel more as the pandemic continues in the United States. But it had been reported that golf’s major organizations, the “five families,” were working in concert to try and prioritize the four majors in a potential makeshift schedule over the second half of the year. The Open, however, separated itself from those “five families” coordination efforts and will go a different route from the first three Stateside majors.
This would be the first year The Open will not be played since a cancelation in 1945 during World War II. The first round was scheduled to start on July 16 at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in southern England. It would be the 149th edition of The Open.
The 150th edition was purposefully set next year at The Old Course at St. Andrews, otherwise known as the “home of golf” and the R&A’s most cherished venue in the Open rota. The Old Course typically hosts every five years but it was pushed back a year for the symmetry of this 150th celebration. There’s been speculation from across the pond that holding the 150th Open at this venue was a major priority for the R&A, but the Digest report added that it is not expected that each future site is pushed back one year. St. George’s will be skipped entirely and The Old Course would still have the 2021 Open, according to the report.
For now, the U.S. Open remains scheduled for its mid June date outside New York City. Rumors and sleuthing attempts have been hyping a potential mid October Masters at Augusta National and the PGA is reportedly still committed to keeping its 2020 men’s major at Harding Park in San Francisco at some later date.

10 TO WATCH : MAYOR’S EDITION 71519
RICK HORROW’S TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 15 : MAYOR’S EDITION
with Jacob Aere
Last week, a ticker-tape parade through Manhattan. Now, it's back to work. In the wake of the USWNT’s fourth World Cup title, boosting interest in the nine-team National Women's Soccer League, where all 23 members of the USWNT compete, is now top priority. As JohnWallStreet notes, capitalizing on the World Cup frenzy is easier said than done, especially when attendance is already a struggle. Portland averages 18,000 fans and Utah averages 11,000, but the other seven franchises average fewer than 5,000. While the NWSL still boasts the majority of the world's top players (including reigning world player of the year Marta), Europe is closing the gap. Wealthy clubs like Olympique Lyon and Barcelona have upped their investments in women's soccer, leading to a record seven European countries reaching this year's World Cup quarterfinals. If the NWSL can't keep up, the balance of power in the sport could ultimately shift — both at the club level (Americans could be lured overseas by bigger paychecks) and internationally (continued investment could threaten the USWNT's dominance). With the future of U.S. women's soccer at stake, the NWSL must seize the moment like never before.
87% of the top 30 advertisers that ran spots during the Women’s World Cup also did so during the Men’s World Cup last year, according to a MediaRadar study. “Looking at how top industries spent TV ad dollars on each tournament, we notice several similarities, but also some differences,” said Todd Krizelman, CEO and Co-Founder of MediaRadar. “Industries such as Retail and Media and Entertainment accounted for a similar share of the ad dollars in both tournaments, but then there were industries where the share of spend was noticeably different.” Industries that accounted for a larger share of spend during the men's tournament included Technology, Non-Alcoholic Beverages, and Beer, Wine and Spirits, while Finance & Real Estate, Apparel, Home Furnishings, and Toiletries and Cosmetics accounted for a larger share of spend during the women’s events. This is yet another sign that consumers, and their brands, view the women’s national team to be every bit as economically viable as the men’s.
DC-based educational technology leader EVERFI has partnerships with the NFL and United Way, as well as MLB, the NHL, and NBA. But it’s a recent alignment with the EPL that is taking up much of co-founder Jon Chapman's time these days. Chapman, who serves as EVERFI's head of global partnerships, last Friday spoke with SportsBusiness Daily about working with some of the premier leagues in sports, his favorite places to travel, and his family's most recent trip across the pond. "I recently got back from London after meeting with the EPL, and they’ve got a really innovative program called Primary Stars, which focuses on elementary age students. We are helping them bring that program to the U.S.,” Chapman said. “It’s a lot of fun working with this variety of leagues, and the way it came about is really just that the sports world is a small one. If you do well by one of the leagues, there’s a really strong network effect.” And as mental health issues and suicide rates climb across the U.S., EVERFI last week launched important new courses to help colleges and universities support students during transitional periods – a critical need as students return to campuses across the nation next month.
Minor League Baseball has announced its list of Top 25 teams in licensed merchandise sales for 2018, with the combined totals of all 160 teams setting a MiLB record with more than $73.8 million in retail sales. The $73.8 million total marks a 4.2% increase over 2017’s record total. The Top 25 list includes: Albuquerque Isotopes, Charleston RiverDogs, Charlotte Knights, Columbia Fireflies, Columbus Clippers, Corpus Christi Hooks, Durham Bulls, El Paso Chihuahuas, Fort Wayne TinCaps, Gwinnett Stripers, Hartford Yard Goats, Indianapolis Indians, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Nashville Sounds, Pawtucket Red Sox, Portland Sea Dogs, Richmond Flying Squirrels, Rochester Red Wings, Sacramento River Cats, Salt Lake Bees, San Antonio Missions, Tacoma Rainiers, Toledo Mud Hens, and Trenton Thunder. Rick recently spoke with Octagon Executive Vice President Woody Thompson, who leads that agency’s baseball practice. Here’s what Thompson shared: “Baseball has done a really great job. From a municipal standpoint, their engagement with these cities has been fantastic and the cities have really gotten behind it…Baseball has a place in this country in the hearts and minds of everybody. Whether you’re a kid or you’re an adult, baseball is there for you.”
After a Wimbledon for the ages, World Team Tennis, U.S. hardcourts return. Armed with new CEO Carlos Silva, two new franchises, a new TV partner, and a new streaming partner, World Team Tennis returns for its 44th season this month, with the eight-team league, which now includes the Vegas Rollers and Orlando Storm, and features 16 matches on CBS Sports channels July 14-August 3, including the league’s debut on broadcast TV July 21. While we won’t see Wimbledon champs Simona Halep and Novak Djokovic competing, this year’s WTT athletes include returning players Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens, Bob and Mike Bryan, Madison Keys, Victoria Azarenka, Monica Puig, Eugenie Bouchard, and John Isner. Elsewhere, the 2019 Citi Open in Washington, DC will see fans offered a new fan experience showcasing D.C.’s “most innovative” culinary fare. Levy will be the exclusive food and beverage partner for the long-running tennis tournament. In a delicious new twist, Levy will rebrand concessions and VIP hospitality fare throughout the tournament grounds with customized menus from Chef Jose Andres and favored local D.C. eateries.
As David Beckham took in Wimbledon action on Centre Court, his MLS Inter Miami franchise secured permission from city commissioners to build a soccer-specific stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The motion was approved for the City of Fort Lauderdale to enter into a comprehensive agreement with Beckham’s MLS project to develop the Lockhart Stadium site. Inter Miami, which will join MLS in 2020, plans to invest up to $60 million to construct a state-of-the-art, 18,000-seat stadium at the site of the now demolished Lockhart Stadium. The venue will temporarily house the MLS franchise for two seasons while the club looks to construct a permanent stadium in Miami on a 73-acre site near Melreese golf course. Lockhart site construction will begin once the FAA approves the process due to the site’s proximity to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. Meanwhile, Beckham is working with his new Studio 99 content house and LeBron James’ Uninterrupted to co-produce a documentary series charting the launch of Inter Miami. Studio 99 already has a slate of projects in development with a broad focus beyond sports.
The New York Islanders have revealed plans for a new train station as part of their $1.26 billion redevelopment project at Belmont Park. The total train station cost, which will be part of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) line, is expected to be $105 million. $97 million of that figure will be funded by redevelopment group New York Arena Partners, with the state providing the remaining $8 million. According to Newsday, the train station will be partially open by 2021, when the Islanders hope to open their new arena, and fully operational by 2023. The service is expected to alleviate concerns over a lack of public transport to the Belmont Park site, which as well as a 19,000-seat arena and entertainment complex is to feature a 250-room hotel and 435,000 square feet of retail space. The announcement of Long Island’s first new LIRR station in nearly 50 years coincided with the release of new analysis of the project’s economic impact. The study claims that the new arena, hotel, and retail village will generate nearly $50 million in new public revenue per year and produce $725 million in annual economic output.
Ever since Steve Ballmer bought the team, the Los Angeles Clippers have done their best to make an impression in a market long dominated by the Lakers. While the Lakers cratered last season, the Clippers created a blue-collar identity en route to a playoff appearance. With a net worth of $42 billion, Ballmer is the wealthiest owner in North American sports, and he's utilized that wealth to bulk up the Clippers' front office and medical staff — two areas of increasing importance in an era of load management. Off the court, the Clippers have carved out their own space in Los Angeles in hopes of attracting new fans and being viewed as much more than a little brother. Ballmer has donated more than $10 million to build 350 Clippers-branded public basketball courts throughout the city — a philanthropic effort that doubles as a way to win the hearts and minds of young L.A. residents. There are also plans for the team to move into a new, privately-financed arena in Inglewood by 2024. The L.A. basketball landscape dramatically changed last week — and if Ballmer has his way, that change could be permanent.
Captain Morgan is toasting Major League Soccer, courtesy of a new agreement to become the league’s official spiced rum and exclusive spirits partner through 2022. The new deal names Captain Morgan as an official sponsor of MLS All-Star – taking place in a few weeks in Orlando – the Campeones Cup (August 14), and MLS Cup (November 10). Fans will soon be able to purchase custom-labeled bottles of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum featuring official team colors and crests. “From New York to Seattle to Los Angeles, everything about Major League Soccer, its intensely passionate fan base, the atmosphere at each match, and the exciting growth of the sport in the U.S. mirrors the energy that Captain Morgan stands for,” said Christina Choi, DIAGEO Senior Vice President, Rum, Gin, and Tequila. “Our goal is to reward that dedicated fan base, and the crews that get together to support their clubs each and every week, with the fun only Captain can bring.” The rum brand also becomes an official sponsor of Chicago Fire Soccer Club, D.C. United, New York City FC, Philadelphia Union, and Seattle Sounders FC.
MLS-Liga MX Leagues Cup confirms domestic rights deals for new North American soccer tournament. According to SportsPro, ESPN and Univision have secured U.S. rights to the inaugural Leagues Cup, the new continental club soccer competition featuring eight teams from MLS and Liga MX, North America’s two powerhouse leagues. ESPN will host U.S. English-language coverage across both its linear and over-the-top channels throughout the seven-match tournament, which kicks off July 23. ESPN+ will stream three quarter-final matches including Chicago Fire v Cruz Azul on the opening day, as well as Houston Dynamo v Club America, and Real Salt Lake v Tigres UANL on July 24. This is a bold move to further the passion for soccer in North America; a move that will prove fruitful in the long run for MLS, which sees some of the youngest average fan ages when compared to other major North American sports leagues.

The amateur golfers taking on the might of Wimbledon: ‘It’s like Brexit. It has split members’
For months, a battle has raged between the legendary tennis club and the golfers who play next door. Will they give up their fairways for £65m?
A fortnight before Christmas, when most people are worrying about finding the money for presents, Catherine Devons will turn down an £85,000 windfall she didn’t ask for and certainly didn’t expect. Even in the mercenary world of London’s runaway property market, and in one of its wealthiest and leafiest corners, such huge jackpots are rare. But in Wimbledon, tennis is big business and money talks.
For the past nine months, a battle has been raging in SW19 – between the All England Lawn Tennis Club, which has been running the championships since 1877, and a small band of golfers who want to keep playing at their own club, which happens to fall in the shadow of Centre Court. International tennis is a brutal business, and Wimbledon now faces stiff competition from the US, Australian and French Opens – all investing hundreds of millions of pounds in state-of-the-art facilities for players and spectators. All England executives are proposing a huge expansion that would gobble up Wimbledon Park Golf Club, turning its tees, fairways and greens into yet more grass courts and tennis facilities. A £65m deal to take over the 120-year-old club was tabled earlier this year – and in two weeks’ time will be put to a vote of 758 golfing members, who include Piers Morgan, Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly, and former cabinet secretary Lord Gus O’Donnell; if it gets the go-ahead, each player, who owns a share of the club just as in a co-operative, will collect an £85,000 payout.

Wimbledon could treble in size, gobbling up 73-acre golf course

Wimbledon could treble in size, gobbling up 73-acre golf course
It will be the biggest expansion in Wimbledon’s history, and fresh moves are being made by the All England Club to swallow up the 73-acre golf course that stands across the road from the iconic tennis venue.
Yet the speed of this massive development all hinges on the complex rules of the neighbouring Wimbledon Park golf club – and the votes of members who include Piers Morgan and television duo Ant and Dec.
It seems a renewed offer to buy out the lease – reliably said to be almost double the one of £25million made by Wimbledon three years ago – is causing a shift in attitudes at the golf club, which the All England wishes to annex to provide much-needed extra space.
Wimbledon could treble in size if it gobbles up the 73-acre golf course across the road
An eventual acquisition is inevitable, and serious efforts are now under way for it to happen within the next few years, with huge implications for the world-famous tennis championships.
However, in an unusual and complex tale of the kind of politics found in British sports clubs, legal experts paid for by the wealthy tennis club are having to pore over the golf establishment’s rulebook to find a way to entice its 750 members into an early sale.
A letter to them from Wimbledon Park Chairman Jenny Gaskin four weeks ago admitted that ‘this issue is causing unrest’, with potential payouts of over £100,000 each at stake.
Meanwhile, at the separate Wimbledon Club – the prestigious multi-sports club situated in the same area occupying nine prime acres – several members of the tennis committee were recently expelled amid a row connected to relations with the All England.
But in terms of the tennis event’s future it is the far bigger parcel of golf course land that is the more important, and it is something that the AELTC has had its eye on for several decades.
With the Court Number One roof project due for completion next year, attention has already switched to what the tournament’s guardians have seen as a key ambition – being able to stage its qualifying tournament on site and allow the whole event to expand significantly.
Currently, unique among the four Slams, the preliminary rounds are held three miles away at the quaint Bank of England Sports Ground in Roehampton, which has the air of a county show.
The new land would see the extra grass courts needed to bring all this ‘in-house’, and allow other facilities for an event that can presently accommodate only just over 40,000 spectators per day.
The All England effectively sealed the golf club’s fate back in 1993 when it paid Merton Council £5.2m for the leasehold of the course, partly built around a sweep of South West London fashioned by the great landscapist Capability Brown.
That lease is not due to expire until 2041. It would then automatically become the property of the All England, but they are keen to take it over more quickly.
Ten years ago they made an exploratory offer to acquire it before time, which was quickly declined. Three years ago came another of £25m, which saw a vote of members reject the idea of even discussing a sale to their neighbours by a majority of 58 per cent.
However, a substantial new offer, said to be just shy of £50m, is being taken much more seriously, especially as the clock is ticking down on the 23 years before the inevitable happens.
The thorniest part of the negotiations is the allocation of the proceeds from the bid, which could see the golf club wound up altogether or reduced, perhaps temporarily, to nine holes.
Roger Federer was crowned men’s champion at the Wimbledon Championships last year
To discourage carpetbaggers a rule was introduced stating that only members of more than ten years’ standing would receive a payout. Yet 40 per cent of the current membership have now been at the club for less than that time. This is particularly problematical because, under a further rule, a majority of 75 per cent would be needed to secure a sale.
As one member pointed out to Sportsmail, under the current scenario – with the new bid on the table – around 450 members would stand to receive a six-figure windfall while 300 would be faced with the loss of their golf course and no compensation. Hardly an incentive to vote through a purchase.
The recent letter from the Chairman acknowledges the difficulty: ‘It is clear that under the Articles of the Company, consideration would only be due to members of more than ten years’ standing. We know that this issue is causing unrest and can assure you that any final proposal that is put to the voting members will include a more equitable allocation of proceeds,’ writes Gaskin.
A series of consultation meetings are taking place there this month with members, at which legal and corporate experts – whose costs are being met by the All England Club – are on hand.
One concern for the buyers is that there could be a significant number of members wealthy enough to value use of the golf course for the next two decades over whatever financial windfall emerges.
The latest developments come at a time when Wimbledon faces fierce competition for pre-eminence among the Grand Slams in terms of prestige and facilities, not to mention that from the lavish Indian Wells Masters event, owned by billionaire Larry Ellison.
The Australian Open has been transformed from the poor relation to an enormous, gleaming production with three roofs over its impressive show courts, attracting far more spectators than Wimbledon. The US Open has its giant Arthur Ashe stadium complemented by a surprisingly elegant new Grandstand Arena and, as of this year, the reconstructed Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Roland Garros had started to fall badly behind due to long-term planning issues. These have now been resolved and in the next two years it is enlarging to add two new arenas before the famous Court Philippe Chatrier is expanded to incorporate a roof by 2020.
So even though Wimbledon has undergone major change since the Centre Court got a roof in 2009, and has its refurbished Court One on the way, it needs to keep up. Its other outside courts are modest and functional compared to its Grand Slam peers.
‘It is important we maintain our place at the pinnacle of the sport given the competitive environment within which we operate,’ an All England Club spokesperson told Sportsmail. ‘Currently our plans assume that we would be able to use the Wimbledon Park land from 2041, however, should it become available earlier, that would benefit our decision-making at this important stage of the planning cycle.
‘Any future development proposals and philosophy will protect and celebrate the heritage of the park, respect the green open spaces and stay true to our ethos of tennis in an English garden, and – importantly – be delivered in partnership with the local community.
The US Open has its giant Arthur Ashe stadium and so Wimbledon faces fierce competition
‘For the avoidance of doubt, there never have been and never will be any plans to build multi-storey car parks and shopping villages, or any other structures that would be completely out of character for the AELTC and The Championships.’
The position at the Wimbledon Club – which provides cricket, tennis, hockey and squash directly across from the Church Road gates – is different in that it owns its freehold, and is therefore more the master of its own destiny.
It has just negotiated a much-enhanced deal with its neighbour to continue providing parking and corporate hospitality facilities during The Championships, which will now be now marketed under Wimbledon’s own brand.
The arrangement nonetheless did not satisfy some members of the tennis committee which, after internal disputes, was disbanded with a few of its key members asked to leave. There do not seem to be any plans for major changes to that site for the foreseeable future.
But huge change is coming on the much larger parcel of land that is now the golf course. By the time the likes of Andy Murray or Novak Djokovic might be coming back to play in the veterans’ event the surroundings could all look very different, and be much bigger.

An Epic Wimbledon Final Gives Way to Plans for a Grand Future
WIMBLEDON, England — On Sunday evening, the Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic stood on Centre Court after beating Roger Federer and made it clear that his long-term plan was to keep improving and adding to his legacy.
On Monday afternoon, Richard Lewis, the tournament’s chief executive, stood in front of an aerial photograph and made it clear that Wimbledon had a similar long-term plan of its own.
The All England Club, which owns and operates tennis’s oldest Grand Slam tournament, continues to expand. The most visible addition this year was the retractable roof on No. 1 Court, giving Wimbledon a weatherproof complement to Centre Court, which was equipped with a roof in 2009.
But those projects have been tiny in scale compared with what is coming next as Wimbledon prepares to expand to the other side of Church Road.
In December, the club completed an early buyout of the lease of the Wimbledon Park Golf Club, which will nearly triple the All England Club’s footprint to about 120 acres from 42.
“It’s just so much opportunity and wonderful to be able to talk about, ‘Will we have too much space?’” Lewis said.
The club will take possession of the majority of the new land in December 2021, and the rest most likely in 2022 or 2023.
Detailed plans are still being formulated, options still being debated. Will they dig tunnels under Church Road to bring the two sections of Wimbledon together? Will the road be closed during the tournament?
But what is clear is that a large number of grass courts will be constructed on the new site, allowing the club to stage the qualifying tournament at Wimbledon instead of at its current site about four miles away in Roehampton.
That could happen in time for the 2024 tournament.
Djokovic will be 37 then, the same age Federer was on Sunday when he pushed Djokovic to the brink of defeat, only to fail to convert two match points in the fifth set.
Djokovic, showing his now-hallmark grit, went on to win the longest Wimbledon men’s singles final in history, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 13-12 (3).
The fifth-set tiebreaker at 12-all — new to Wimbledon this year — was instituted to prevent ultramarathon matches that can wreak havoc on the schedule and on players’ ability to recover. Lewis said that, when Wimbledon opted last fall to introduce the final-set tiebreaker, there was a serious debate about whether the finals should be exceptions. But the tournament leadership chose to maintain consistency across all matches.
Lewis also said he was happy Wimbledon had decided not to take the conventional path and go to a final-set tiebreaker at 6-6.
“I must admit I was standing there at 6-all by the side of the court, and I thought there’s loads left in this match, and I’m really glad we’re not doing it now,” Lewis said. “I think 12-all takes time to get used to, but I felt the standard of tennis was unbelievably good, and one of the factors was I think Roger and Novak didn’t have to worry about pacing themselves. They knew there was a finish line.”
It is remarkable that Djokovic could fight off an inspired Federer over 4 hours 57 minutes, and also that Federer remains so inspired at this late stage of his career.
“I hope I give some other people a chance to believe at 37 it’s not over yet,” Federer said during the awards ceremony.
Djokovic was watching quietly from the other side of Centre Court, the champion’s trophy in his grasp, as Federer answered questions from the BBC’s Sue Barker. When it was Djokovic’s turn, he sent a clear message.
“Roger said he hopes that he gives some other people a chance to believe they can do it at 37,” Djokovic said. “I’m one of them.”
It would be quite a golden-era twist if Federer’s enduring ability to challenge for major trophies is what provides Djokovic with the belief that he can eventually break Federer’s records of 20 Grand Slam singles titles and 310 total weeks at No. 1.
But that scenario looks ever more likely with Djokovic re-establishing himself as the sport’s best big-match player after the two-year slump between winning his first French Open title in 2016 and his Wimbledon victory in 2018.
For now, he has 16 major singles titles and has spent 260 weeks in the top spot. He will remain No. 1 heading into the United States Open, the next Grand Slam tournament, which begins in late August.
“I’m not really looking at age as a restriction of any kind, for me at least,” said Djokovic, the reigning U.S. Open champion. “It depends not only on myself. It depends on circumstances in life. I’m not just a tennis player. I’m a father and a husband. You have to balance things out. Obviously you need to have the right circumstances, the right support, for things to play out in the right way.”
Support remains an issue for Djokovic, who has had to play in front of vocally pro-Federer crowds at what would normally be neutral Grand Slam venues. But Djokovic shrugged off the partisan fervor and beat Federer in the 2015 U.S. Open final and in the 2014, 2015 and 2019 Wimbledon finals.
Djokovic has been the villain at Wimbledon before. Andy Murray dispatched him with surprising ease in straight sets in the 2013 final to become the first British man in 77 years to win the singles title.
You might think British tennis fans would feel some gratitude to Djokovic. Apparently not much. Federer’s beautiful game, genial personality and sentimental status as the game’s grand old man mean that Djokovic is, for now, only No. 1 on the scoreboard at showplaces like Centre Court.
“I don’t have any obligation to play,” Djokovic said of tennis. “I play it because I really love it, and I have support of the closest people in my life. As long as that’s so, hopefully in five years time I can be hearing the same chants.”
By then, much will have changed. Federer will surely have ended his career and finally be free to ski with his children in Switzerland instead of watching from the side of the slopes to avoid injury.
By then, the new and much-expanded Wimbledon should be in place. And the expensive new roof on No. 1 Court will surely have proved much more useful than it did in 2019, when it was closed only occasionally for fading light, and never for rain during a tournament of clear and delightful weather.
“I will take a fortnight where we have no rain any year,” Lewis said with a chuckle. “But I have no illusions. The roof will come in very handy.”

Scottish minister demands investigation into nursery over alleged racism
Scottish minister demands investigation into nursery over alleged racism
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Scottish cabinet minister has called for an investigation into alleged racial discrimination at a nursery that refused a place for his young daughter.
Humza Yousaf, the devolved government’s health secretary, said a Dundee nursery had claimed there were no places available for his two-year-old daughter Amal.
But they said a white friend who called to check was told there were places available on three afternoons a week at the same establishment.
Mr Yousaf said applications had been tested by other family members and reporters, with “white-sounding” and “ethnic-sounding” names being accepted and rejected respectively on the same day.
A spokesperson for the owners of the Little Scholars Nursery in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, said they were “extremely proud of being open and inclusive to all” insisting that “any claim to the contrary is demonstrably false and an accusation that we would refute in the strongest possible terms”.
The spokesperson told The Daily Record newspaper, which first reported the claims: “In addition to our owners being of Asian heritage, across more than a decade we have regularly welcomed both children and staff from a range of different religious, cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds, including two Muslim families currently.
“We have also regularly made arrangements to accommodate different lifestyles by, for example, providing a halal menu for those children who come from Muslim families.”
Mr Yousaf said he and his wife had contacted the Care Inspectorate and are also seeking legal advice on the issue.
Mr Yousaf said: “We are fooling ourselves if we believe discrimination doesn’t exist in Scotland. I believe evidence we have proves our case beyond doubt.
“As well as reporting the nursery to the Care Inspectorate we are also seeking legal advice.”
The minister, who has played a high profile role in Scotland’s response to the Covid pandemic, said that contacting the Care Inspectorate with their concerns was “not a step my wife and I have taken lightly”.
He tweeted: “After our nursery application for our daughter was refused a 2nd time, my wife asked her White Scottish friend to put in an application for a Child the same age. Within 24hrs of refusing our application my wife’s friend’s was accepted.”
