There’s a strong presence from the in-form Cowboys, as well as the usual smattering of Melbourne playmakers. One of those, Harry Grant, will start from the bench after suffering an illness in the lead-up to the game.

As the full-time whistle blew during our scruffy 1-0 win over Northern Ireland at Euro 2016, the older man behind me was weeping at the prospect of watching Wales in the quarter-final of a major championship. I performatively puffed out my cheeks and raised an eyebrow, in that way people do after reading a BuzzFeed article about how many egg whites Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson eats in a day.
Feeling we had sufficiently bonded over Gareth McAuley’s own goal, and as he seemed to be in his 60s, I asked if he remembered Wales reaching the quarter- finals of our only World Cup appearance in 1958. “No,” he replied. “I was three.”

Robert Page has said Gareth Bale will have to find a club sympathetic to his needs if the Wales captain is to arrive at the World Cup in peak condition.
Page said he will discuss with Bale and Aaron Ramsey next week how they intend to resolve their uncertain club futures. Bale is a free agent after departing Real Madrid and Ramsey has a year on his contract at Juventus, who sanctioned what proved to be a fruitless loan to Rangers in January. The Wales manager said it would be unrealistic for Bale to lead the team in Qatar without signing for a club because “all the training in the world” does not replicate match fitness.

Retailers and club could face fines after watchdog finds they broke competition law
JD Sports and Elite Sports, along with Rangers Football Club, broke competition law by fixing the prices of some Rangers-branded clothing to keep them high at the expense of fans, Britain’s competition watchdog has found.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which has been investigating the matter since December 2020, said sports retailers Elite and JD fixed the retail prices of a number of Rangers-branded replica kits and other clothing products from September 2018 until at least July 2019.

The new T20 trend for replacing batters at crucial moments will upset traditionalists, but that doesn’t necessarily make it wrong
For a game rooted in centuries of tradition, cricket has often found itself curiously susceptible to fashion. Did you spot the moment, about five or six years ago, when it quietly became mandatory for any good fielder to be described as a “gun”? Bowling attacks were “the bowling unit” for most of the 2000s before imperceptibly morphing into “the bowling group”. Left-arm wrist-spin is having its long-awaited moment in the sun, itself a reaction to the 2010s trend for spinners who didn’t really spin the ball at all, but just did funny flicky things with their fingers while going “oooh” and stroking their chins a lot.
And so, just as one wicket often brings two, another fashion is sweeping through short-form cricket. On Sunday at Edgbaston, while playing for Birmingham against Nottinghamshire in a rain-affected eight-over game, Carlos Brathwaite became the first batter in the history of the T20 Blast to be retired out for tactical reasons. Seeing Calvin Harrison, a leg-spinner, about to bowl the final over for Nottinghamshire, Brathwaite decided to leave the field and let Sam Hain – a better player of spin – replace him.

Liverpool are in talks to sign the 18-year-old right-back Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen. The Scotland Under-21 international is open to the move and the Premier League club hope progress can be made in negotiations over a fee.
Ramsay played 24 league games for Aberdeen in the 2021-22 season, after breaking into the first team towards the end of the previous campaign, and is regarded by Liverpool as having the talent to compete for a place in the immediate term as well as being one for the future.

Despite being as obvious an attempt at sportswashing as one is ever likely to see, it is difficult to determine what, if anything, the much-publicised LIV Golf Series is likely to do to serve its intended purpose of presenting a more benign, warm and fuzzy image of its backers in Saudi Arabia.
Still in its embryonic stages, with the first ball not scheduled to be struck until later this week in Hertfordshire, things started badly for the Saudi rebel tour and seem to have gone downhill quicker than a bathtub full of pensioners in an episode of Last of the Summer Wine.
