Considering how things unfolded before, why did Riley want Maya to be civil with Lucas? It didn’t make sense.

Have a very Merry Christmas, fellow Girl Meets World fans who are still reading/writing fics, making/reblogging graphics, and doing analyses.
Here's the latest update in my now 276K-word fanfic,
FIRE IN THE WATER - Chapter 29 (Riley POV) (Log in to AO3 to read/comment)
A very timely graphic considering the chapter title... 🦋
Ch29 features:
Riarkle being cute
Auggie & Riley scene regarding what he told Lucas in Texas3
A Lucaya dream (yes, in Riley POV)
Auggie & Ava #couplegoals
Riley trying to work through her feelings & the trauma she inflicted on herself by doing that
Topanga's words of wisdom
A paper plane
Riarkle being serious
Or, if you missed ALL the other updates... You can read the story from the start (it's mostly lucaya-focused until Chapter 10).
Excerpt:
“What’re you looking at?” Farkle asked. “Oh, I’ve seen this one. The dogs would be, what— Five months old now?”
“I think so,” Riley said. “I hope they all went to good homes.”
“Well, I know one went to Pappy Joe’s," Farkle said. "Lucas house-trained it.”
What? When?  “I didn’t know that.” She frowned. “But I suppose there’s no reason for him to tell me if—”
“Friends still tell each other things, Riley.”
“Lucas and I aren’t that close now.” Did he want it that way? “I don’t know if it’s just him, or both of us, but he’s—” She hesitated. “He’s not the guy I remember falling for.”

Oh, just 250K+ words of an epic Girl Meets World fic.
No biggie.
Plus the most recent update...
FIRE IN THE WATER - Chapter 28 (Zay POV) Thanks to AI madness this fic is restricted to AO3 accounts. Log in to read/comment.
Ch28 features:
In Medias Res trope
Zayadora being cute
Lovesick Lucas
Moody Maya
The return of "Babs!"
An annoyed but friendly French teacher
PUNS
Scheming
A possibly stoned Freshman
A mouse
Zayadora being serious
Waffles
Excerpt:
“What did you put in Maya’s locker?” Isadora asked.
“A very important note from the ghost of Christmas Art.”
Isadora’s mouth twisted. Zay dragged his eyes away from her unbelieving facial expressions - fascinating as they were - and followed her gaze toward the lockers. Maya stood there now, laser-focused on the paper stuck in the vent.
“Say, could you make sure she follows the instructions?”
“There are instructions?” Isadora took her glasses off to wipe them. “What are they?”
Zay resisted the urge to distract her any further. He had a lovelorn idiot to convince that Maya wanted to talk to him. And Isadora needed to convince Maya to go to the library, so— “Look, Maya should understand the instructions. But maybe you could help her out anyway? I gotta go—” He glanced at Maya’s open locker. Like now.
“What is this? What are you doing?”
“What no one else will,” Zay said, tapping Isadora’s nose as he strode past.

Fire in the Water (Chapter 27)
Story Notes:
Focal ship: Lucas/Maya (slow burn-ish)
Rating: Mature/Teen & Up
27: Why Birds and Beasts from Quality and Kind (Maya POV)
Sunflowers inspired her and motivated her and made her feel all warm and fuzzy inside until they couldn’t do that anymore because she hadn’t used them right. She’d forced them into a situation they weren’t suited for; one that ultimately brought pain and heartache to herself, and destruction for everyone else. She should’ve known that, truly. She should’ve known keeping something that wasn’t hers would only lead to despair. But she was a glutton for punishment too; if Hope teased Maya with something, she fell for it hook, line, and sinker. Hope was teasing her with something— someone— again, right now. Maya elbowed him. “Sorry, yeah, just— What’s with the sunflowers?”

FIRE IN THE WATER - Chapter 30 (Maya POV) Log in to AO3 to read/comment
Ch30 features:
👁♥🐑
Shawn & Katy parenting Maya
Alice In Wonderland inspired dream
A dachshund
"mouldy taco"
¿Spanish?
Maya's art in the media
Or, read from the beginning...
Excerpt:
There was more to Lucas than his Texan roots. Maya had known that from the second he waltzed into her classroom barely an hour since she half-met him on the train. But there was Riley to consider. Her best friend was learning how to be confident around others, and Lucas was good practice.
He was also easy on the eyes and had a voice that stirred unexpected emotions.
So instead of breaking Riley’s heart to pursue Lucas for herself, Maya chose to make fun of him. She had to push him away from her; try to make it look like she didn’t want to be in his life— Even though being Riley’s best friend meant that she would be.
It was a way to keep him close and interacting with her— stimulating her— without committing to any kind of relationship with her.
That was the game.
And he played it, but he never followed her rules. He broke them constantly.
No wonder she couldn’t get him out of her head.

Short answer: YES.
Long answer:
FIRE IN THE WATER - Chapter 31 (Lucas POV) Log in to AO3 to read/comment
Ch31 features:
Nightmare!Maya in a Lucas dream
several pep talks by Mrs Friar
Lucas & Maya looking at each other in class
the return of the 2B pencil
Charlie Gardner mocking Lucas
several pep talks by Zay
Lucas & Maya looking at each other in the library
FEELINGS
Or, read from the beginning...
Excerpt:
If only he’d received the pep talk the day of the Spring Formal. Instead he showed up at the bakery to state his case the day after and allowed Maya to take him down bit by bit. He didn’t feel worthy of talking to Riley after that, but something— Some type of gravitational pull drew him into Maya’s orbit as she raced away from the confrontation and into the arms of Nathan Pryce.
Lucas blinked away the memory of Nate touching her face; his smile as Maya hugged him; his fingers threaded within her hair. It was then Lucas should’ve recognised his jealousy. Nate had a closeness with Maya that didn’t make sense for two people who’d only just met. Why couldn’t Lucas have that with a girl he’d known for three years?
Why couldn’t he touch Riley like that? He loved her didn’t he? He was supposed to— Was what Nate had with Maya something else? Something physical? Something more physical than what Lucas once had with her— Something mature? Something adult? Was that why Maya liked Josh? Did she want to grow up quicker than her friends?

Teeny tease for Fire In The Water Chapter 28 (Zay POV) in regard to a lucaya plot point with some bonus zayadora:
Zay checked his watch. “Is it a good thing I can’t hear any shouting?” “I don’t think the librarian would allow that,” Isadora murmured. “I meant her shouting. Like, if Maya was throwing books at his head—” Zay gulped. “Though if memory serves, that would lead to an understanding.” “Zay—” “Yeah, sorry.”

Fire in the Water (Chapter 26)
Story Notes:
Focal ship: Lucas/Maya (slow burn)
Rating: Mature/Teen & Up
26: Why All These Fires, Why All These Gliding Ghosts (Maya POV)
Maya followed her heart that night, and it got her in trouble. There was no denying anything after that. Not to herself. To everyone else, yes; because not doing so would require far too much analysis and it was so much easier to just push the feelings down and try to forget about them. She'd had enough practice.

Fire in the Water (Chapter 25)
Story Notes:
Focal ship: Lucas/Maya (slow burn)
Rating: Mature/Teen & Up
25: Sent You My Feelings In A Letter (Lucas POV)
Maya couldn’t stand to be in the same room with him. She wouldn’t talk to him in Biology; she barely argued with him at recess. She sidestepped around his questions after English. There was no way he’d get anything from her now. He’d just have to—
“Hey man, don’t break the drafting lead! Come on.”
He didn’t care. He had to concentrate on his breathing now that Maya was so close. It was dumb. It was stupid. Stop being so dramatic. Yet he couldn’t help the tension forming in his shoulders, his neck, his jaw. Lucas gritted his teeth and closed his eyes.

Fire in the Water (Chapter 24)
Story Notes:
Focal ship: Lucas/Maya (slow burn ish)
Rating: Mature/Teen & Up
24: Light the Blue Touch Paper (Riley POV)
Someone needed to diffuse the situation. Normally Riley would look to Lucas to take control, but it was true what Maya said about him. There was no hint of the hero she’d fallen for; not even a glimpse of the knight he mentioned in his letter.
She couldn’t feel sorry for him. She couldn’t find any words to lift him up. There wasn’t any courage on display at all. He was a coward. He’d taken the easy way out, just like Maya said. He’d not shown up, not talked to her; he hadn’t faced her to give her the letter. He couldn’t even look at her that morning.
He just kept trying to explain himself to Maya.

Fire in the Water (Chapter 23)
Story Notes:
Focal ship: Lucas/Maya (slow burn ish)
Rating: Mature/Teen & Up
23: Circuit Breaker (Isadora POV)
Patrick brought out a side of Isadora that teased her mercilessly. It was the side that played with possibilities in science; the side that daydreamed of hula dancing with Lucas in Hawaii; the side that often tempted her to join Maya on the roof during Gym class.
That side of her had always been there. It helped her win her best Debate achievement in middle school, and because of that she caught Farkle’s eye as something more than an intellectual adversary. And because of that, Isadora gained more friends; friends she cared for, in myriad ways.
Friends who cared for her in myriad ways too.
Patrick was wrong to suggest they didn’t.

Fire in the Water (Chapter 22)
Story Notes:
Focal ship: Lucas/Maya (slow burn ish)
Rating: Mature/Teen & Up
22: The First Law of Motion (Lucas POV)
Excerpt:
It was dark by the time he was finished, and well past the time he should have arrived at the dance. Lucas sent a quick apology text to Farkle, hopeful he’d still give the carriage ride to Riley because she deserved it. She deserved to feel like the princess she was by someone who knew how to treat her like one.
It wasn’t him. It had never been him. He’d tried, but it never felt comfortable; never felt natural; never felt real.
But Riley was real, and he’d really screwed things up with her.
Maya was right. He’d made himself out to be something he wasn’t.
Something he never should have tried to be.
And it was all because he wanted to forget about his past. He wanted to ignore his background as much as possible, and focus on a future that appeared to be perfect.
It came crashing down around him once before. He should’ve learned the lesson.
He was learning the lesson.
It would’ve hurt less if he’d just learned it that first time.

Merry Christmas, people.
As a special thank you to my Lucaya fanfic readers, I have here a teeny Lucaya excerpt from the very next chapter (22).
It’s nothing special...
It’s just that this is the first time Lucas & Maya have spoken in DAYS.
Speak to her. Lucas gulped at his mother’s words in his mind. He checked the door. Where was Riley? Where was Zay? Speak to her. What are you waiting for? Lucas turned to greet Maya.
“No.”
Somehow that one word eased his mind. “I just wanted to—”
“No,” she repeated.
Lucas smiled. “Thank you for the text,” he said, adding, “Alice.” Lucas didn’t wait for her to respond. He faced the front of the room again just to see Zay grinning like an idiot at the door. Lucas shook his head.
Zay settled in next to Maya on their bench. “So, uh, anything new you need to tell me?”
“What?” Maya scoffed. “I don’t need to tell you anything.”
“Well, I saw Shawn at the office before, and he thanked me for what I did Sunday—”
“Oh, uh—” Maya’s voice lowered to a whisper. “Yeah, he knows. Mom knows.”
Lucas smiled.
“So, they know everything?” Zay queried.
“Everything they need to know,” Maya said.
Zay chuckled. “So, not everything. Gotcha.”
Maya sighed. “Can we not discuss that here?”
“Sure.”

Fire in the Water (Chapter 18)
Story Notes:
Focal ship: Lucas/Maya (slow burn ish)
Rating: Mature/Teen & Up
18: Draw the Short Straw (Maya POV)
Excerpt:
As much as she wanted Lucas, Maya knew it wouldn’t work out. That became more and more evident until she called it off at the ski lodge. She couldn’t risk it. She couldn’t risk losing Riley and then him too.
She didn’t want to risk anything with Josh either, but it felt more likely something could happen with him. Even if it did have to wait two or three years.
With Nate, Maya wondered if there might be another possibility. Or at least, a sooner one.
