more lgbt book recs!
lgbt books I have read and enjoyed in the last six months or so..good for curing quarantine boredom!
contemporary
if we were villains by m l rio- dark academia but with theater kids! murder and shakespeare and drugs but what upset me the most was when they hurt each other’s feelings....really really beautiful prose and lovable characters, page turner until the very last paragraph. 5/5
fantasy
girls of paper and fire by natasha ngan- bought this in my college bookstore because it was a) fantasy and b) lesbian. did a very fine job of fulfilling both requirements. gave me a hunger games vibe for some reason even though the plots are totally different. 4/5
the mermaid’s daughter by ann claycomb- irish lesbian opera singer mermaids, what more do you want? the stakes were technically high but really warm and fuzzy vibes idk 4/5
poetry/drama
if not, winter: fragments of sappho trans. by anne carson- the og lesbian poet! fully read this side by side with my crush in the sunshine, picking out our favorite lines...good times. 4/5
angels in america: a gay fantasia on national themes by tony kushner- a gay man dying of aids in nyc starts receiving angelic visions..terrifically funny and heartbreaking, with compassion for all its characters. my life goal is to revive it on broadway and see andrew garfield take the lead again 5/5
horror
sawkill girls by claire legrand- a wildly good time. eldritch entities! evil/redeemed lesbians! ace rep! female friendship literally saving the day! very gothic vibes! a whole lotta fun 4/5
bonus
the iliad by homer- my literature professor was very insistent that this is not lgbt rep and that really we should be looking virgil’s aeneid for gay subtext, but i thought the aeneid sucked while homer was at least original, so. sing, goddess, of the rage of achilles. 4/5
for whom the bell tolls by ernest hemingway- one moment i was caught up in the moral ambiguities of the spanish civil war and the next a character was saying, im not a lesbian, but i am in love with another woman...but i want you to be happy and marry the protagonist instead...so not really lgbt rep but excellent female characters, really really lovely prose, beautiful narration. was shocked the entire time I read it because frankly i had no idea hemingway could write. 5/5
the picture of dorian gray by oscar wilde- you already know this one. i read it more to say that i had read it than anything else, but it was a wild ride ig! 3/5

Emo Logan AU:
Logan Picani - An Emo who is doing bad at school on purpose, Emile is his dad and they don’t really get each other but that’s okay. oldest of four, Emile is a foster dad. Takes good care of Missy and Frank, fights a lot with Linda but they all love each other very much
Virgil Tempest - pastel ball of nerves who is getting straight a’s because if he doesn't his future is ruined, and his reliance on coffee to stay sane would worry his dad if his dad wasn’t Remy. youngest of three, his older brothers are seniors at the school, Seth is kind of a try hard but he's a good big brother, and Toby is the only person Virgil can truly be himself with
Patton Legrand - a nerd with way too many after school activities because being smart is lonely living in high school so he distracts himself from bullies and fake friends who only want help with homework by having a million hobbies, and who's loving parents Dot and Larry try to be supportive but not overbearing. He's an only child, adds to the feeling of isolation which isn’t great
Roman Sanders - Goth drama queen who is always suggesting the most tragic plays to put on in the school theatre, who sees beauty in the dark and gloomy and finds comfort in it
Remus Sanders - typical jock bully who just wants to go crazy go stupid, be feral and to hell with any of the consequences
their father Thomas is a very tired man for someone not yet in his 40's
Desiderio Torres - cheerleader bitch, the king of gossip and undisputed mean queen of high school, do not fuck with him. unless your name is Valerie Torres and you're his aunt who doesn't fall for any of his bullshit and though he acts annoyed he actually really respects her for it.
he and Remus are obviously a power couple and they use their power for good sometimes. they’re mostly chaotic neutral but they protect the ones they care about.
Ships:

The Clever Emo And His Royal Gothness:
"Patton Legrand is going to be the death of me."
Roman received a text just as he was exiting class. He rolled his eyes fondly at his friend's inability to deal with feelings and texted back.
"so what did your precious nerd do this time?"
The answer came immediately like Logan was already writing it.
"he debated me in lit class!!! You should have seen him he was so stubborn and eloquent and beautiful I think my soul left my body"
~Nice job, padre, told you that would work.~ Roman thought to himself proudly. Those two idiots will get together in no time, he was sure of it.
"okay okay, calm down. I've got some crofters in my locker, help yourself to some, I'll be right there."
Roman wrote back as he made his way from the class to his locker.
"thanks Ro, you're the best."
Roman smiled fondly down at the text, until he heard someone talking about him. Normally he wouldn't care, but partially because he was kicked five times since he left class and partially because the voices sounded familiar to him, he looked to see who it was, only to find his precious Patton and his hated arch nemesis, Virgil Tempest.
The pastel plague in human form was apparently displeased by the fact that Roman would be joining his and Patton's table for lunch. Well, two could play the name calling game!
"the feeling's mutual, you preppy pest-al prick." ha, that'll shut him up!
Of course seeing Patton upset that his two friends aren't getting along so well, he decided to lift his sunshine's spirits.
"hello, puffball! Here's that bow tie I promised you, it would look much better on you anyway." He said, smiling and handing the accessory to his dear friend.
His smile seemed to catch the prep off guard, not that Roman cared what that stuck up prep thought about him.
"well, I'll see you two at lunch!" he stepped back and turned around with his usual flare, intending to go meet Logan before the bell rang, when Virgil suddenly called after him.
"oh? Is the prince of darkness wanted in the company of his royal shyness?" He snarked, turning his head slightly to look at Virgil but not his whole body. He wasn't going to give that jerk more time than he promised Patton.
"you wish, princey. Just thought we should get rid of this dumb sign on your back, seeing as you're not wearing your cape today to hide it." Virgil snarked right back as he ripped the sign from Roman's shirt.
Princey, huh? That didn't sound half bad, not that he'd admit that to the prep. However, he did feel himself begin to blush in embarrassment at letting himself be pranked like that, and even more at needing help. From Virgil, of all people!
"oh. um, alright then." His face felt like it was on fire, he felt so stupid right now. How long had he been walking around with that sign? ~calm down Roman, you'll have plenty of time to beat yourself up about this later, right now there's a thanks you regretabley owe a certain someone...~ Roman felt incredibly embarrassed as he forced the words out of his mouth.
"thank you, Virgil. Any lesser man would have let me walk around with that sign all day. And now I know why I've been kicked five times on my way here." He didn't know what he expected to hear from a goody two shoes as a response to that. Maybe that he should spend less time in fantasy land and be more aware of his surroundings, or something about doing good things being one of his extra credit assignments, or perhaps Roman thought the prep would just snobbishly turn his nose up at him and walk away, completely ignoring him.
He certainly didn't expect to hear the words "yikes, humans are trash." Come out of the rose colored boy's lips. And he couldn't help but think that Virgil's voice sounded really nice all the sudden, and though he couldn't figure out what exactly was different about it, it still made him giggle. ~oh God, did I really just giggle?! In front of - and because of - Virgil Tempest?! What the hell's wrong with me?!?~
Despite his sudden internal crisis, he knew he had to keep the conversation going or they'd all just awkwardly stand there. "yes, they are. Which is why it was very noble of you to help me without being asked." He waited to see what Virgil would say, if he'd puff up at the compliment or put on his signature smile, the one he'd seen a million times whenever he answered a question in class correctly or got his picture taken for the star student list, the one that's always made him disdainful of the prep even before he had a single conversation with him.
But instead of any of that, Virgil smiled in a different way. A smile Roman had never seen on him before, small and shy. If smiles had metaphorical volumes, then his signature smile was loud like an obnoxious pop song that plays on the radio 24/7 and gets drilled into your head, but this smile was quiet, like a slow song you play to fall asleep to, or to cuddle someone with. ~I wonder what cuddling Virgil would-~ nope, that's enough of that train of thought, thank you very much! Oh thank God Virgil was still talking, he tuned in just in time to catch most of it and fill in the blanks fast enough to act like he wasn't lost in thoughts for the past few seconds.
"don't mention it. Anyway, you better get to class you dork, or else Patton won't have anyone to talk to." And suddenly, something clicked for Roman. He suddenly liked Virgil's voice for the same reason he liked his smile. It was real. He honestly can't believe he hadn't realized it before but in his defense, he thought being fake was Virgil's true identity. Which he feels really bad for now, but he's only ever had bad experiences with preps, so while his assumptions were wrong and unfair, they weren't baseless. But seeing this side of him, Roman finally understood why Patton liked Virgil so much.
He was starting to think he might like Virgil too.
He was literally saved by the bell as, right on cue after Virgil voiced his concern for the curriculum clock about to strike, the next class was announced with a loud ringing that Roman was for once thankful for.
"right! Well, I'll see you two later." he made his dramatic exit a more humble one this time, shyly smiling at Virgil. He wasn't one to tone himself down but Virgil seemed about as overwhelmed as Roman felt embarrassed, so he'd make an exception. just this once.
He figures coach won't mind if he's a few minutes later than usual, seeing as he's exempt from participating in P.E and only has to show up so they can mark his attendance, so he goes to his locker first, knowing that his friend would wait for him well past the bell, if nothing else than just to have an excuse to skip class.
When he made it, Logan was standing there, waiting impatiently. Upon seeing his dramatic friend, his frustration was immediately directed towards Roman. "There you are, finally! Where have you been?" Logan's voice took an accusatory tone, but Roman recognized the hurt and confusion hiding behind the anger.
"Sorry, MCscared, I ran into a bit of a... Distraction, shall we say. The good news is you're having lunch with Patton today!"
"WHAT?!" Logan was yelling in his ear, quite the role reversal of their usual antics. "What did you- I mean how did you- when would you have even- HUH?" The emo was between confused, delighted, and absolutely terrified.
"well, the distraction is only slightly related, but to answer your questions, I've been friends with Patton for the past two weeks and we made plans to have all four of us sit together at lunch today, but I'll of course be backing off once you and Patton inevitably strike up a conversation without my help, and I've no doubt Virgil will do the same."
After a short pause where Logan seemed to process this information as his brain came back online, he started to respond. "Alright, well, that about answers all of my questions, but it still doesn't explain what took, you, so..." His speech slower as he suddenly realized something unusual about Roman's statement.
"I'm sorry, did. Did you just call the Virgil Tempest by his name? And not a mean nickname?! And did you also say something positive about him with no prompting from anyone else?! Am I still in my own timeline?!"
"oh come on, I can be nice to people!" Roman protested, feeling bashful. Bashful, can you believe it? Him, the great Roman Sanders, feeling bashful. Bashful! Honestly he should just defenestrate himself right now, truly.
"barely, and that's to the people you genuinely like. You can be kind of not an asshole to people you tolerate, but wasn't it you who loudly and publicly declared yourself as Virgil's Tempest's arch enemy?"
"well maybe I didn't know know what I was talking about, okay?!" Roman suddenly shouted, making Logan frown. At the sight of this, Roman immediately started stuttering apologies and promises to do better, which caused Logan's frown to deepen for a moment before he schooled his expression to one of neutrality again. "Roman, it's fine. You're good, I'm good, we're cool. Everything is okay. You did nothing wrong, alright?"
Roman focused on Logan's anchoring voice, doing the breathing exercise his friend's dad taught him. Mr Picani was a great influence and one of the few adults Roman could trust.
After he manages to calm down, he explains himself. "I'm sorry for getting so mad but, the distraction I ran into? Was Patton and Virgil. And I was so ready to hate him, too! It started out like a standard interaction between us always does, right? I heard him talking some shit about me so I talked some shit back, but then..." Roman trails off, almost too embarrassed to continue.
"then, what? Come on you Tim Burton reject looking ass, don't leave me hanging!" Logan teased, knowing that the only thing to get his friend out of his own head when he starts spiraling is to make him upset, that way he focuses all his attention on being Dramatically Offended™.
"reject?! Tim Burton should be so lucky to have me in his movies, fuck you very much!" Roman struck back, before taking a breath to collect himself. "So, you know how hell is other people?"
"yes of course, it's one of the few things we agree on, what about it?"
"well, turns out some asshole taped a kick me sign to my back-"
"ah, so I see this entire school has chosen death. Who was it? No really, I just wanna talk."
"Logan, no. No murder today and besides even if it was a murder day I wouldn't be able to tell you because I obviously didn't see who did it or it wouldn't have been an issue worth mentioning at all, cuz I would've dealt with them myself."
"fine, go on."
"thank you! So after being kicked by five individuals and stumbling across Patton and Virgil's conversation which I was just about to wrap up and leave to see you before class, Virgil called to me and informed me of the sign while removing it. And he was so, nice?! Like, he was kind and decent and a genuinely sweet person?! But also, his humor! Let me tell ya, it is not what I expected. The star student looked me dead in the eye when I told him I was kicked and said 'people are trash'. WHAT?!"
"why does this surprise you so much? I mean, you were the one who told me his fakeness was an act you could see through from a mile away. So what's different this time?"
"I guess I realized that I was so busy seeing through it, I never thought to look into it."
"oh. Well I get that, but I also get why you didn't look into it. He reminds you too much of yourself-"
"what? No he does-"
"in middle school."
"...oh. oh shit."
Logan was right, as fucking usual. Roman had tried so hard to be perfect and fit in in middle school, and be what his DNA originators wanted him to be. It was torture every day, and thinking about it made him sick. He hated who that person was, a stranger who wore his face and used his name, and he never truly got over all that self loathing. He hated to admit it to himself, but he realized now that he had been projecting that self loathing onto Virgil.
Which really wasn't fair to Virgil, especially if they were as similar as both Logan and Patton kept insisting, then the prep probably already had his fair share of self loathing without Roman's help.
"hey, don't beat yourself up about it too hard. Yeah, you fucked up, but now you know and you won't do it again."
"yeah, I guess that's true." Roman smiled at his friend, only for that smile to immediately dropped as he came to a terrible conclusion. "Oh god no."
"what's wrong now?" Logan asked, slightly amused as he could tell his friend had his overly dramatic face on.
"if I was in the wrong this whole time, then that means I owe Virgil Tempest an apology."
Logan could barely hold it together anymore, and five seconds later, he burst out laughing. "Oh, this I gotta see!"
Roman's offended pout turned into a vengeful smirk. "Well you're in luck, because you're gonna get to see it today at lunch. Just like I'm gonna get to see you lose braincells in real time as you try to talk to Patton without drooling."
Logan suddenly remembered the beginning of the conversation, his whole face going red. "You know, I really hate you sometimes."
"the feeling is mutual and you'll be thanking me later for this, probably when you and Padre are at the alter exchanging vows." Roman winks and nudges him.
"right, and will this be before I fight his father for the right to have his son's hand in marriage, or after?" Logan quipped at Roman as the two finally made their way from the latter's locker to their respective classes.
Roman had a few more steps to walk alongside Logan before they had to split off, so after a playful punch in answer to Logan's teasing, he put a hand on his friend's shoulder to stop them both. "But seriously, this is gonna go great, okay? I know I joke around about you being a helpless gay a lot, but I also know you get nervous and I'm here to tell you there's nothing to worry about."
Logan smiles at him. "Thanks, Ro. You're-" Logan takes a breath before continuing, the words not coming easy to him. "You're a good friend."
Roman's smile widens, and yeah he gets a little misty eyed, so sue him! He knows just how much that means coming from Logan, so he immediately replies. "It's no problem Lo. You're the greatest friend I could've ever asked for. Helping you isn't even a question."
Logan just shakes his head fondly at Roman's ability to pull a dramatic line like that out of nowhere, and tries not to visibly marvel at the fact that he means it. He snaps himself back to earth, and changes the subject.
"anyway, we should probably get to class, I'll see you at lunch?"
"yep, see ya!"
And as they both went in different directions, their smiles never left their faces as they thought of how lucky they were to have met each other. (Author’s note: this is the unedited version that I’ve had in my drafts and worked on for a while. it’s not extremely different, but there are some slight changes between this and the chapter I just posted on AO3. still, I felt that for the few people who follow thisblog, I should post this draft already. going forward, I’ll just post a link to the latest update on my AO3 account. hope you enjoy this chapter!)

Cheshire’s Smile: Adrien’ Living Arrangements… AKA: Gorilla having primary custody of one Adrien Agreste.
Read this first: https://a-marlene-s.tumblr.com/post/189232280481/oh-can-you-write-a-drabble-about-adrien-and-chat
Background Info:
The first two heroes that came to be are Chat Noir and Carapace.
Nino and Adrien know of each other’s secret identities.
Tumblr media
Six months after the disappearances of Emilie Agreste, Nathalie and Gorilla “Septime Legrand” worked together to get Adrien out of the Agreste household.
It was clear to them that Gabriel plans on working his son to the bone for his fashion company, going as far to isolate him from the world around him.
It wasn’t so hard to do. Nathalie knew someone that did an extensive investigation on Gabriel that showed he has been taking out his grief on his only son and it showed.
This resulted with Gabriel giving primary custody of his son to Septime Legrand, aka Gorilla. The fashion tycoon knew if news reached into the public, the backlash will end him.
He did what Nathalie told him is best for him, Adrien and for the company. He gave away his son.
Adrien now lives with Gorilla and Mrs. Clementine Legrand.
Gorilla and Clementine had only one son that is in the army and he would visit as often as he could. When the son found out he now has a brother, he started to send postcards and random items to Adrien.
Adrien loves everything his brother sends him and treasures every single thing he gets.
Within a month, Adrien was enrolled into summer school to give him the opportunity to interact with other kids his age… that wasn’t Chloe.
There, he met Nino who was there to catch up on a music program that is only offered during the summer. Through Nino, Adrien met Marinette and Kim, Nino’s childhood friends.
The trio helped Adrien to the best of their abilities in helping him get used to being around people his own age.
To say the least, it was a massive eye opener for Adrien. Even more so when his new friends taught him to stand up for himself and showed him how the actual world is like.
Adrien still does modeling for his father’s company as it was part of the deal between Gorilla and Gabriel. But that only if it doesn’t take away from Adrien’s other activities.
Like fencing, video games, studying with friends, and well… being a kid his own age. Things he wants to do.
That still doesn’t stop him from modeling after finding out how Marinette wants to become a fashion designer and is more than willing to use his father to help her reach her goals.
Adrien put a massive line in his ‘friendship’ with Chloe. He made it a point that her behavior is unacceptable and that she needed to change in order to make friends. Or at least be remotely human. Sticking to his guns against her.
He begins to grow feelings for Marinette and it wasn’t until Kim points out that it looks like Adrien is developing feelings for his best friend Marinette. Then saying that it sucks for Adrien as it appears Marinette has a thing for Chat Noir.
Adrien doesn’t know why if he should be happy that Marinette has a thing for his alter ego or that Marinette probably doesn’t like him as Adrien.
In the background, fully knowing that Adrien is Chat Noir and the blonde’s crush on Marinette, Nino is laughing his ass off.
