Leigh: I'm gonna make a dark edgy universe with ongoing genocide on witches for centuries. It'll be like the Avatar but the elements of the four nations are: Nazi Witch Hunters, Persecution, Prison camps to torture and experiment on witches, and Slavery.

And then, I'm gonna make a character who fights back, creates a safe space for witches, finds a way to make them indispensable to the king, and plans to put an end to the ongoing genocide.

Readers with functional braincells: Is that your hero?

Leigh: Hero? No! Oh God, no!!! Where did you get that impression??? He's the VILLAIN with a capital V!!! Ugh, I guess I'll have to add more nonsensical mustache twirling evil villainous visuals to make it clear. Maybe throw in a black cape and shadow magic into the mix while I'm at it.

Readers still refusing to shut their brain before reading YA: So what do your heroic leaders want?

Leigh: Its really brilliant and subversive actually! Get rich quick hustles for money. Housewife to the first boy to talk to her. And inherit a royal title from his father.

Leigh: What about them? Oh...maybe I'll make up magic cocaine that's highly addictive to the witches and overworks them to death to speed up the genocide now that the horrible evil villain advocating for them is dead and modern technology renders grisha useless anyway. Leigh Bardugo: The darkling handed Alina the two most powerful amplifiers—created by his grandfather making them family heirlooms of sorts—on a silver platter making her the most powerful grisha in the world despite being the least trained one with only a few months long crash course she got from his mother, but you see, it is a metaphor for SLAVERY because I use the words like 'collar' and 'fetter' to describe these priceless artifacts that only empower my heroine FAR beyond what she wants, deserves, or has earned. It is also a metaphor for an abusive and controlling relationships with rich powerful men even though they are only acquaintances at best and have no relationship whatsoever.

Also Leigh Bardugo: Inej—a literal indentured slave, stolen from her family by sex traffickers—was "saved" by a rich white boy, whose character goals are *checks notes* money, hustles, and winning pissing contests. HE LEGALLY OWNS HER. But worry not, because unlike her previous owner, who groomed her to serve dudes with a brown skin fetish in a brothel at age 10, he groomed her for "strong female character" aesthetic shit like being a spy and an assassin. Sure, killing innocents goes against her core beliefs. But hey Girl Power™ am I right! He's not like the other capitalists. You see, Kaz—her boss who literally owns her—secretly loves her. And she too pines for him. No gratitude or power imbalance in those pure feelings. No sir. None indeed. So they are totally "equals". And this is my epic romance that you're supposed to root for uwu

I was told the author of shadow and bone was an abusive relationship while writing the series in an attempt to "help me understand" the crappy writing, but all it did was help me understand why alina's crippling codependecy on mal and nina's sassy whining for respect from a violent misogynist who doesn't even see her as human are the "romances" in the series, why bagra—who killed her own sister, beats up and insults her students, and first groomed and then sabotaged her own son—is a heroic figure, why powerless and hunted people seeking power is the ultimate no no bad boo boo illogical evil of the story, and why the heroine remains reactionary, passive, and stagnant until she loses all power and opportunities and gets her "happy housewife ending" after stripping her crush of his life, skills, and even identity, so there's nothing but complete codependency keeping them trapped together in a romanticized version of the past, you know, exactly like the fantasies people create to cope with the stagnation of their soul sucking relationships

Bardugo: I'm going to write darkling stans into my story to show how crazy they are

The darkling stan in question: is an awkward adorable teen with good manners, who is polite, respectful, and a bit star struck with them, and is the only person in the room with answers because of excellent reading comprehension, meta analysis of canon (in universe religious texts), and his ability to 2 and 2 together to the extent that this guy figured out that there has always been only 1 darkling who faked his death and all saints' miracles and magic is all tied to grisha power and also has answers for nikolai's monster situation

The good guys: Acting like teenagers hung up on the same ex instead of political leaders with diplomacy, listening skills, and speaking skills when they aren't threatening to murder him every five seconds

So here's how Luda who was such an awesome character we just got glimpses of can still come back! Merge her with the character of Sankta Lizabeta of the roses like she knew the darkling centuries ago, lives in a ghost realm under the fold, and teams up with him in the afterlife after he dies on the fold 🤷🏽‍♀️ Given the show canon of how the fold was created this could totally work like just imagine ghost Luda with a poison ivy powers getting upto no good with darkles 💚🖤

And they can both come back to life! Hell even bring back that badass dragon shapeshifter dude 🐉
