didn’t have an interest in girls when he was younger; pretended in order to please his parents while mostly not being concerned about it- he was going to be in an arranged marriage anyway, and love would have nothing to do with it.

knew he was the heir and the expectations that came from that at a very, very young age - while there was no love in his childhood home, he was treated like a sort of prize until he was put into gryffindor, at which point things started to slip.

knew that he liked boys at around twelve years old, but kept it silent and continued to pretend he had all sorts of crushes and was interested in girls - this time to make sure he kept his friends, who were the only good thing in his life.

maintained a playboy persona throughout hogwa.rts years to keep himself from being found out - he was the first to play spin the bottle at parties, the first one for drunken make-outs, but nothing ever went further. people assumed he was just hard to get.

had a crush on james that lasted until he was thirteen - it was sort of a misplaced love in that james was the first person to ever really show sirius love.

gave a half-hearted final attempt to prove to himself that he wasn’t gay and that he could just get on with his life by sleeping with a girl, after which it became very clear to him that he wasn’t interested in girls romantically or sexually. sent him into a spiral of hating himself for not being able to ‘fit in’, knowing that ending up running from his family was on the horizon if he didn’t want to be forced into a marriage.

he comes out to the marauders when he’s fifteen/sixteen.

while things were certainly said to him by his family insinuating that he was gay, they were never able to prove it. they were obviously not supportive.

during his seventh year of hogwarts and during the first war, his being gay is sort of an open secret - after he leaves his family, he’s more open about it. if you know you know, and if you were to ask he wouldn’t keep it a secret from you unless you were an active danger to him. he makes a valiant effort to wear the label like he does the blood traitor label.

he looks up to alastor moody so much after he finds out he’s gay (note that this is not something the general public knows) - he sees this man who is a successful person, has a career, and he’s gay. he wants to be like him. looking up to moody is part of the reason he regrets not being an auror for a long time.

he is much more outward about his sexuality during the second war, especially in verses where he’s exonerated / survives. he wears what he wants to, and while it’s still sort of an open secret, it’s more open than ever. in verses where he works at hogwarts, students tend to know - and he’s an open ear for kids who are queer and need someone to look up to.

→ OVERVIEW:

From the day Kingsley Shacklebolt was born his life revolved around something he never truly had any interest in, though he was too polite to say anything EUDORA AVERY had once played for The Holyhead Harpies as it’s star Seeker until she’d decided to slow her career down and raise the next great Quidditch star. With a father who was also the lead sports reporter for The Daily Prophet, Kingsley had never really gotten a chance to say what else he wanted out of life. Raised in Holyhead in his large and sprawling family home, Kingsley life began and remained scheduled. Eating and sleeping schedules were timed to almost a second as was contact time with his parents or moments he could spend alone in his room playing with his toys. Like everything in her life, Kingsley’s mother wanted to be the very best parent to her only son. She had spent her entire pregnancy reading every book published on motherhood and used her own intuition to ensure that Kingsley would be raised competent with a broomstick and well versed in the rules of Quidditch. A Pure-Blood family, Kingsley was taught by his mother when most Muggle children began to attend Primary School, though she ensured a large portion of the day was spent on their family estate helping her son to manage a broomstick.

Avery’s were flyers and no son of hers would be handling a broomstick for the first time on his first flying lesson at Hogwarts. His childhood felt managed with little time for fun and rarely involved other children. Playing with the local children in Holyhead his mother believed would distract from his studies or Quidditch lessons which had to be completed each day before he was allowed outside to play. By the time Kingsley was headed off to Hogwarts he was able to control his magic with ease and had mastered flying through the air and tossing a Quaffle with the same ease achieved by people twice his age. There was no double Kingsley would become a talented Quidditch player, it was in his blood after all. It just wasn’t in his heart. The books which lined the halls of their family library spoke of great Quidditch players like his mother, grandfather and great uncle Thomas who had made history due to their escapades. But the library also contained other books he found interesting about the other side of his family. Though his father had broken with Shacklebolt family tradition to become a sports journalist their family had been known mostly for their role as Aurors.

His grandfather on his father’s side Vicarage Shacklebolt had been involved with the tracking and capturing of many of Gellert Grindelwald’s English accomplices and helped place their family in the eyes of the wizarding world though there had been great Aurors before him. Something set his imagination ablaze as he read history books and old newspaper clippings about his grandfather. It was a passion he couldn’t muster for Quidditch even though he knew it would make his mother happy if he could. Kingsley was good at the game, he just simply wasn’t in love with it. When Kingsley’s letter arrived to attend Hogwarts his parents were overjoyed at the prospect of him playing Quidditch at school. Their family had all competed on the Ravenclaw team at some point in their lives and it was decided that he would also when he joined Hogwarts. Ravenclaw was on his mind as he sat under the sorting hat though the hat needed more time to decide if it felt that was the exact right fit for him. There was bravery in Kingsley that shone through to the sorting hat though ultimately it decided that Ravenclaw would be his home which was where he met his best friend TOMAS WOOD.

Tomas was sorted a few years after Kingsley and was the most Quidditch obsessed boy he’d ever met. Kingsley hoped that Hogwarts would be his opportunity to distance himself from Quidditch and his family name but Tomas helped him find some sort of love for the game he was destined to keep playing. Tomas longed to be the captain of the Ravenclaw team and with his love for the game, knowledge and talent Kingsley had no doubt he would make it there, with or without his support. Joining the team together Kingsley became the star Beater of the team and a famous dynamic duo with Tomas who dominated Hogwarts Quidditch cup during their time at the school. But Kingsley wanted more than just to be known for Quidditch and worked hard at school to show his professors that he deserved more responsibility. In his fourth year Kingsley became a prefect and established a relationship with fellow Ravenclaw prefect POPPY POMFREY and Gryffindor prefects ALICE YEN and BILLIUS WEASLEY. Alice was a hardworking and talented witch with aspirations to be an Auror despite the fact her family wanted her to take over her family shop. Billius was the life and soul of the party and Alice’s opposite in many ways as she tried to rein him in alongside all of the younger Gryffindors they’d been tasked with trying to control. Alice and Bill brought out a new side of Kingsley that made him want to explore his true self.

Kingsley wanted to be an Auror and he worked hard at school to prove he had exactly what it took to leave Hogwarts and become one just like his grandfather. A firm favourite of his Defence Against The Dark Arts teachers and of PROFESSOR DUMBLEDORE, Kingsley was advised by Dumbledore to follow his dreams and leave the wants of his parents in the past. Kingsley was more than just a Quidditch player and someone destined for greatness. He saw injustices in the world and knew that his abilities would be useful in righting the wrongs he saw creeping up around him and making the wizarding world a better place for everyone which was more important than what his mother wanted for him. His family were not happy when he announced he’d changed his course, particularly his mother and younger cousin JASPER AVERY who idolised Kingsley and wanted to be exactly like him. It was hurtful to see his family saddened by his choices but Kingsley stuck by them and was firm that he would become an Auror. Graduating a decorated Quidditch player and head boy, Kingsley began Auror training alongside Alice and worked tirelessly to train and prove himself to their boss ALASTOR MOODY. A very talented duellist, Kingsley’s speciality is tracking down people of interest and securing them to bring in for questioning.

A brave wizard with a strong sense of right and wrong Kingsley isn’t afraid to dig deep into those he believes need to be brought to justice no matter who they are. It was this ideology that brought him once again to the attention of Albus Dumbledore who asked Kingsley to consider taking part in a group of people he was putting together. The Order of The Phoenix was put in place to help protect the wizarding community from dark forces they knew were slowly taking over London. Although Kingsley and his friends knew dark forces were looking it was Dumbeldore who provided them some direction of where to look. THE DARK LORD. With people going missing daily without any arrests being made Kingsley has a sneaking suspicion that the current ongoings are being covered at The Ministry up and has begun to look inside for answers that The Dark Lord had begun to infiltrate the government. Although Kingsley is a very careful wizard he has the sneaking suspicion he is being watched. Working a few missing persons cases, Kinsgley would find his files go missing or notes he had taken misplaced. Frustrated, Kingsley has begun privately investigating his colleague. MIRA IYER who he noticed had been acting strangely of recent and missing gaps of time which seemed suspicious. Alongside his new mentee, hopeful Auror CARDORAC DEARBORN, Kingsley is determined to confirm his theory and isn’t afraid to upset the apple cart in order to prove it.
