Top 5 Technologies Needed for a Spacecraft to Survive Deep Space
When a spacecraft built for humans ventures into deep space, it requires an array of features to keep it and a crew inside safe. Both distance and duration demand that spacecraft must have systems that can reliably operate far from home, be capable of keeping astronauts alive in case of emergencies and still be light enough that a rocket can launch it.
Missions near the Moon will start when the Orion spacecraft leaves Earth atop the world’s most powerful rocket, the Space Launch System. After launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Orion will travel beyond the Moon to a distance more than 1,000 times farther than where the International Space Station flies in low-Earth orbit, and farther than any spacecraft built for humans has ever ventured. To accomplish this feat, Orion has built-in technologies that enable the crew and spacecraft to explore far into the solar system. Let’s check out the top five:
Tumblr media
Systems to Live and Breathe
As humans travel farther from Earth for longer missions, the systems that keep them alive must be highly reliable while taking up minimal mass and volume. Orion will be equipped with advanced environmental control and life support systems designed for the demands of a deep space mission. A high-tech system already being tested aboard the space station will remove carbon dioxide (CO2) and humidity from inside Orion. The efficient system replaces many chemical canisters that would consume up to 10 percent of crew livable area. To save additional space, Orion will also have a new compact toilet, smaller than the one on the space station.
Highly reliable systems are critically important when distant crew will not have the benefit of frequent resupply shipments to bring spare parts from Earth. Even small systems have to function reliably to support life in space, from a working toilet to an automated fire suppression system or exercise equipment that helps astronauts stay in shape to counteract the zero-gravity environment. Distance from home also demands that Orion have spacesuits capable of keeping astronaut alive for six days in the event of cabin depressurization to support a long trip home.
Tumblr media
Proper Propulsion
The farther into space a vehicle ventures, the more capable its propulsion systems need to be in order to maintain its course on the journey with precision and ensure its crew can get home.
Orion’s highly capable service module serves as the powerhouse for the spacecraft and provides propulsion capabilities that enable it to go around the Moon and back on exploration missions. The service module has 33 engines of various sizes. The main engine will provide major in-space maneuvering capabilities throughout the mission such as inserting Orion into lunar orbit and firing powerfully enough to exit orbit for a return trip to Earth. The other 32 engines are used to steer and control Orion on orbit.
In part due to its propulsion capabilities, including tanks that can hold nearly 2,000 gallons of propellant and a back up for the main engine in the event of a failure, Orion’s service module is equipped to handle the rigors of travel for missions that are both far and long. It has the ability to bring the crew home in a variety of emergency situations.
Tumblr media
The Ability to Hold Off the Heat
Going to the Moon is no easy task, and it’s only half the journey. The farther a spacecraft travels in space, the more heat it will generate as it returns to Earth. Getting back safely requires technologies that can help a spacecraft endure speeds 30 times the speed of sound and heat twice as hot as molten lava or half as hot as the sun.
When Orion returns from the Moon it will be traveling nearly 25,000 mph, a speed that could cover the distance from Los Angeles to New York City in six minutes. Its advanced heat shield, made with a material called AVCOAT, is designed to wear away as it heats up. Orion’s heat shield is the largest of its kind ever built and will help the spacecraft withstand temperatures around 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit during reentry though Earth’s atmosphere.
Before reentry, Orion also will endure a 700-degree temperature range from about minus 150 to 550 degrees Fahrenheit. Orion’s highly capable thermal protection system, paired with thermal controls, will protect it during periods of direct sunlight and pitch black darkness while its crews comfortably enjoy a safe and stable interior temperature of about 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tumblr media
Radiation Protection
As a spacecraft travels on missions beyond the protection of Earth’s magnetic field, it will be exposed to a harsher radiation environment than in low-Earth orbit with greater amounts of radiation from charged particles and solar storms. This kind of radiation can cause disruptions to critical computers, avionics and other equipment. Humans exposed to large amounts of radiation can experience both acute and chronic health problems ranging from near-term radiation sickness to the potential of developing cancer in the long-term.
Orion was designed from the start with built in system-level features to ensure reliability of essential elements of the spacecraft during potential radiation events. For example, Orion is equipped with four identical computers that each are self-checking, plus an entirely different backup computer, to ensure it can still send commands in the event of a disruption. Engineers have tested parts and systems to a high standard to ensure that all critical systems remain operable even under extreme circumstances.
Orion also has a makeshift storm shelter below the main deck of the crew module. In the event of a solar radiation event, we developed plans for crew on board to create a temporary shelter inside using materials on board. A variety of radiation sensors will also be on the spacecraft to help scientists better understand the radiation environment far away from Earth. One investigation, called AstroRad, will fly on Exploration Mission-1 and test an experimental vest that has the potential to help shield vital organs and decrease exposure from solar particle events.
Tumblr media
Constant Communication and Navigation
Spacecraft venturing far from home go beyond the Global Positioning System (GPS) in space and above communication satellites in Earth orbit. To talk with mission control in Houston, Orion’s communication and navigation systems will switch from our Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS) system used by the International Space Station, and communicate through the Deep Space Network.
Orion is equipped with backup communication and navigation systems to help the spacecraft stay in contact with the ground and orient itself if its primary systems fail. The backup navigation system, a relatively new technology called optical navigation, uses a camera to take pictures of the Earth, Moon and stars and autonomously triangulate Orion’s position from the photos. Its backup emergency communications system doesn’t use the primary system or antennae for high-rate data transfer.

Shopping Cart
Aside from audio services, Car Audio Zone and Car Stereo Outlet also offer window tint installation services for Houston and surrounding areas including Sugar Land. You don't need to spend a fortune to get Android Auto into your vehicle. If money is tight, look no further than the DMH-1500NEX car stereo head unit from Pioneer. This Alpine stereo receiver isn't lacking for expandability either, featuring six-channel preamp outputs, compatibility with most digital audio formats and dual-camera inputs. A single DIN car stereo opening in your vehicle doesn't mean you can't have a huge touchscreen anymore. With the Alpine Halo9 iLX-F309 car head unit, a 9-inch floating display attaches to a 2-inch head unit. Blaupunkt Car Audio
But as with the iLX-107, we often had to hunt and peck to find what we wanted in the menus.
Thousands of Lexus stereos have been seen here at the shop.
It features a standard two-way system, which means a woofer and a driver, which both combine to deliver well-balanced sound quality.
Be sure you have enough mounting depth for your woofer and that your box isn't too tall to slide into the trunk.
Dual Bluetooth chips are great for taking hands-free calls, streaming media content, and tapping into the phone’s hotspot. The 2A USB delivers twice as fast charging for everything from Bluetooth headsets to GoPros and iPad. Before buying one, make sure that it will fit the car’s dashboard. Set the crossover point around 10 Hz below the lowest frequency your speakers can produce without issue. Keep in mind that there is not a perfect set of crossover frequencies that work for every speaker in every car. In nearly all situations, crossovers will require some form of adjusting to optimize their effectiveness. Below you will find some links to different sections of my website for shopping, and also a small showcase of Franks AudioMotive's favorite products. Auto manufacturers don't often put high-end stereos into their vehicles, but any system can be replaced with another that features more components and accessories than standard devices. Most models receive AM and FM signals, but certain radios have different features that not every driver will require. In addition to hands-free texting and voice control, the display has 112 different color options to match your vehicle’s factory illumination scheme. Drivers that still have a CD collection can rejoice, as Pioneer includes a CD/DVD player in this model. For drivers with a rear-view camera or a dashcam, the Kenwood has dual camera inputs and adjustable rear parking guidelines. It supports certain video files too, and customers can upload JPEG photo files either to view or set as a custom background.

Top five innovations required for a Spacecraft to Survive Deep Space
Orion's artist rendering during Mission Discovery -1
Artist rendering of NASA's Orion spacecraft as it flies 40,000 miles past the Moon during Artemis I, their first combined rocket flight with the Space Launch System.
Tumblr media
When a human-built spacecraft travels into deep space, a range of features are needed to keep it and a crew secure inside. Both distance and length require spacecraft to have structures that can function safely away from home, be able to hold astronauts alive in the event of accidents, and yet be small enough for a rocket to launch it.
When NASA's Orion spacecraft leaves Earth atop the world's most powerful rocket, NASA's space launch vehicle, Artemis Missions near the Moon will begin. Since launching from Florida's Kennedy Space Center, Orion will be moving beyond the Moon more than 1,000 times further than where the International Space Station is located in low-Earth orbit, and further than any human-built spacecraft ever goes. Orion has built-in technologies to accomplish this feat that enable the crew and the spacecraft to travel deep beyond the solar system.
norton.com/nu16 norton.com/nu16 norton.com/nu16 norton.com/nu16 norton.com/nu16
Run and Respire Processes
When humans depart on longer journeys away from Earth, the devices that hold them alive must be extremely efficient while taking up minimum mass and space. Orion will be fitted with sophisticated technologies for environmental protection and life support designed to fulfil the needs of a deep space mission. A high-tech device that is currently being tested on board the space station will extract carbon dioxide ( CO2) and moisture from the Orion interior. Removing CO2 and humidity is necessary to ensure the crew's breathing is safe for oxygen.
And water condensation is regulated on the vehicle's hardware to avoid water penetration into critical machinery or deterioration of the primary pressure system.
Also the device saves volume inside the spacecraft. Without such materials, Orion will have to bear several chemical canisters inside the spacecraft that would otherwise take up the volume of 127 basketballs (or 32 cubic feet)—about 10 per cent of the crew's living region. Orion will now have a new portable bathroom, bigger at the space station than the last. Long-term missions away from Earth drive engineering to build lightweight structures not only to optimise the space available for crew convenience, but also to handle the volume required to hold consumables such as adequate food and water for a mission that lasts days or weeks in whole.
Highly stable systems are increasingly necessary because remote astronauts do not benefit from regular resupply ships to carry spare parts to the space station from Earth, such as these. Also small devices have to function efficiently to sustain spatial life, from a functioning bathroom to an automatic fire protection device or fitness equipment that lets astronauts remain in condition to combat the zero-gravity condition in space that can cause muscle and bone atrophy. Distance from home also allows Orion to have space suits which will keep astronaut alive for six days in case of cabin depressurization to sustain a long trip home.
Proper Push
The farther a spacecraft goes into space, the more efficient its propulsion systems need to be to reliably maintain its path on the trip to ensure that its crew will get home.
Orion has a highly capable service module that serves as the spacecraft's engine, providing propulsion capabilities that allow Orion to explore the Moon and return to its exploration missions. The service module is made of 33 engines of varying sizes. The main engine will have significant manoeuvring capability in space during the mission, including injecting Orion into the lunar orbit and firing strongly enough to return to Earth from the orbit of the Moon.
The desire to turn the sun off
It's no easy feat to go to the Moon and it's just half the trip. The farther in space a spacecraft goes, the more heat it can produce when it returns to Earth. Getting back safely requires technology that can help a spacecraft survive sound and heat levels 30 times twice as hot as molten lava or half as hot as the sun.
When Orion returns from the Moon, it could fly almost 25,000 mph, a pace that in six minutes will span the distance from Los Angeles to New York City. Its advanced heat shield, made from AVCOAT material, is designed to strip away when it heats up.
Orion would also undergo a temperature range of 700 degrees from about minus 150 to 550 degrees Fahrenheit prior to reentry. Together with thermal controls, Orion's highly efficient thermal management system will shield Orion during times of direct sunshine and pitch black darkness while its crews can safely experience a safe and stable interior temperature of about 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
 Radiation Safety
As a spacecraft flies on missions beyond the safety of Earth's magnetic field, it will be subject to a stronger radiation environment than in low Earth orbit, with higher levels of radiation from charged particles and solar storms that can cause damage to sensitive devices, avionics and other equipment. People exposed to high doses of radiation can experience acute and chronic health problems ranging from short-term radiation sickness to the long-term potential for cancer growth.
From the outset, Orion was developed with system-level software built in to ensure stability of the spacecraft's critical elements during future radiation incidents. For eg, Orion is fitted with four identical computers, each of which is self-checked, plus a slightly separate backup computer, to ensure that Orion can still send commands in case of a disturbance. Engineers checked components and equipment to a high level to ensure that even in serious conditions the vital systems are still operable.
Orion also has an emergency storm shelter under the crew module's main deck. NASA also developed arrangements for crew on board in the event of a solar radiation incident to build a portable shelter inside using onboard materials. There will also be a number of radiation sensors on the spacecraft to help scientists better understand the radiation environment, far from Earth. An inquiry called AstroRad will fly on Artemis I to test an advanced vest that has the ability to help protect vital organs from solar particle events to decrease radiation.
Constant Navigation and Communication
Spacecraft that venture far from home go beyond the Global Positioning System ( GPS) in space and above the Earth orbit communication satellites. Orion will use all three of NASA's space communications networks to chat with mission control in Houston. As it rises from the launch pad and into cislunar space, Orion will turn from the Near Earth Network to the Space Network, made possible by the Tracking and Data Transfer Satellites, and eventually to the Deep Space Network, which provides some of NASA's most remote spacecraft with contact.
Also, Orion is equipped with backup communication and navigation systems to help the spacecraft stay in touch with the ground and orient itself if primary systems fail. The backup navigation system, a relatively new technology called optical navigation, uses a camera to take images of the Earth, Moon and stars and triangulate the position of Orion from the photos autonomously. Its emergency communications backup system does not use the primary system or antennae for high rate data transmission.

Incredible pictures of monster storm systems over America by photographer Adam Kyle Jackson
When it comes to weather, there’s only one thing we all like more than talking about it – and that’s looking at it.
Especially when things get dramatic.
And so it’s little wonder that storm-chasing photographer Adam Kyle Jackson, from Texas, has garnered almost 60,000 followers on Instagram – because he posts absolutely jaw-dropping pictures of extreme weather.
Storm-chasing photographer Adam Kyle Jackson, from Texas, has garnered almost 60,000 followers on Instagram. This incredible image was taken in Perryton, Texas. One of his followers commented: ‘Wow, wow, wow’
The stunning image on the left was taken in Abilene, Texas. Adam captioned it ‘one 30-second shot into pure darkness’. He described the image on the right – taken in Perryton, Texas – as ‘the calm after the storm’
The pictures Adam is most proud of include these two, taken in Roswell, New Mexico. The image on the right, in particular. Adam said: ‘[It’s] a perfect bolt that filled the frame, did not spider off into the clouds and split the sunset downburst perfectly down the middle’
His portfolio includes breathtaking images of lightning strikes in the likes of New Mexico, Nebraska, Kansas, Monument Valley and his home state – and the most mesmerising storm-cloud formations.
The 39-year-old explained to MailOnline Travel that a love of dramatic weather formed and as he grew up in Texas.
He said: ‘Having grown up in West Texas witnessing extreme thunderstorms every spring and summer, I grew a natural affinity to the weather and to the chase.
‘I recall standing on the back porch with my mother as a child watching a tornado touchdown in the distant horizon and us frantically running to the truck to go alert my dad who was working in the cotton fields, unaware of the potential danger.
‘I have been chasing storms for over a decade now with the primary goal of staying safe while photographing lightning, mammatus clouds, and Milky Way thunderstorm photos.’
Almost inevitably, though, things haven’t always gone to plan.
This breathtaking image was taken in Big Bend National Park in Texas and produced using one 30-second exposure
The picture on the left shows a ‘nice little wall cloud and its tail hovering over the Oklahoma/Texas border’. Adam said that it transformed into a ‘baseball-hail-throwing monster storm from hell, with winds of close to 150mph’ and ‘multiple tornadoes’. The mesmerising shot on the right was taken in the inimitable Monument Valley
Adam said: ‘I lost situational awareness once in Nebraska where my cell phone signal was poor, and the radar update was delayed. I was driving in between two hail-producing 70mph-plus-gust mesocyclones [a region of rotation within a thunderstorm] where one shifted course rapidly and boxed me in merging with the other storm.
‘I suddenly found myself in the core of the new storm with extreme hail and wind losing complete visibility of the road. I stopped the truck and as I did, one extreme gust seemed to have shifted the pickup truck perpendicular to the road.
‘I think my heart stopped at that moment and I vowed to never be “in” the storm ever again and since then have done so with zero incident.’
Tornado warnings were issued for this supercell outside Tecumseh, Nebraska. The rainbow contrasts strikingly with the ominous darkening skies
Adam said of the image on the left, taken near Houston: ‘Chasing tornados can lead you to some interesting places, where you often don’t get a photo of a tornado but find a beautiful supercell in a pasture – that went on to produce a tornado while I was getting a necessary Red Bull’. The lightning image on the right was taken in Perryton, Texas
His training has helped.
Adam, who’s a photography contributor to the official City of Houston Visitor’s Guide, continued: ‘I have completed the official “National Weather Service Skywarn Spotter Training” and registered with the Spotter Network. Regardless of the motives for being in or around the storm, the training stresses we always maintain an escape route, situational awareness, and form of communication to notify others of potential hazards and of your location in the event of an emergency. Never put yourself or others at risk, especially for a photo.’
A big truck helps, too.
Adam drives a black Z71 4×4 Chevrolet Suburban with modified suspension and 33-inch tyres ‘to battle the unruly and often mudded-out backroads’.
This image was taken in Galveston, Texas, and was apparently the only one during the shoot – ‘out of hundreds of lightning strikes’ – that worked
The striking picture on the left is of a supercell over Elkhart, Kansas. The picture on the right of a supercell was taken in Bassett, Nebraska, with a vehicle in the shot ‘to show the sheer scale of the thing’
The ‘go-to’ spots he drives it to for good storm pictures include northeastern New Mexico and West Texas.
In these areas, Adam said, ‘storms can pop up as single cells and rage into the late evening as monster multicellular systems producing large hail, beautiful lightning displays, and the occasional tornado’.
He continued: ‘Some of my best photos are taken just outside of Clayton, New Mexico, and Lubbock, Texas, where I’m from.’
His favourite storm photos are within his Roswell, New Mexico, ‘lightning series’. And his overall favourite picture from this set is presented here – an image of a ‘perfect bolt that filled the frame, did not spider off into the clouds and split the sunset downburst perfectly down the middle’.
Fancy having a go at taking storm pictures?
Then heed Adam’s do’s and don’ts.
He said: ‘Do decouple from the tripod and go handheld. I have captured my most dynamic weather images this way.
‘Do take the widest-angle lens you have and make use of cropping in post-processing. This will ensure you bring home the data to work with later versus leaving it in the field. I shoot most of my shots at 14mm ISO 64. With this method, one shot can often yield two or three good images from the same exposure cropped multiple times.
Adam said that if you want to take great storm-chasing pictures, ‘don’t frantically drive around from thunderstorm to thunderstorm’. Instead, ‘pick a target and stick with it’
The image on the left, taken on Follets Island, in Texas, shows a supercell forming over Christmas Bay. The image on the right was taken in Kansas. Look carefully and you’ll spot a house bottom right
‘Do plan using weather models, moonrise and moonset data, and sunrise and sunset data. Also, once you’ve selected a general geographic region to target for your photoshoot, utilise Google Earth to roam the country backroads before you get there. I often use Google Earth to plan out visual interest of the image such where the contiguous wheat fields are, avoiding wind turbine farms and the blinking red lights.
‘Do experiment with daytime lightning shot captures using the high-frames-per-second mode of your camera. Nighttime lightning photos are relatively easy to capture. Set up your tripod, get your exposure dialled in, and set it for 30 seconds and hope for the best. Daytime lightning takes a bit more finesse and a steady hand, but also the challenge is worth it visually since not all the scene is clearly in view and properly exposed.
‘Do plan for photos after the storm. There is nothing prettier than taking photos of the mammatus clouds and crazy lightning on the backside of a supercell during the golden hour sunset.
‘Do be there early and don’t frantically drive around from thunderstorm to thunderstorm. Pick a target and stick with it. The weather models can be wrong and I’ve often watched other professional spotters’ live feeds where they are staring into blue skies with little white puffy clouds 30 miles away and me thinking “what on earth are they doing there when the crazy storms are right here right now?”
‘And sure enough, just like clockwork, the storm I was on inevitably dies and I’m playing catch-up to get in front of some of the craziest storms you’ve ever seen.
‘Trust your instincts, give yourself time, and network with others who have been doing this in some cases 30-plus years. They know what they are doing. If there is a cluster of storm spotters reporting on the Spotter Network GPS in an area, you might also want to be there too.’
Adam recommends using Google Earth before a storm-chasing escapade to scope out the country roads. This image was snapped in Kansas
On the left is a picture of a multi-tornado-producing supercell storm system right overhead in Rock County, Nebraska. Adam captioned the picture on the right, taken in Texas: ‘I’ve always wanted to take the kind of mammatus photo that would make your mama proud… well I hope you’re proud mama’
Adam kicked off his ‘don’ts’ list with some important safety tips.
He said: ‘Don’t be “in” the storm to take photos of the storm.
I made this mistake early on and often got rained out, exposed to crazy winds, and the car battered senselessly by hail, all the while getting zero photogenic weather scenes for my efforts.
‘My favorite storms to track move to the southeast while I comfortably and continuously move to stay a few miles ahead of the storm to the southwest. Make sure your parked vehicle is pointing in the direction of your escape route always.
‘Trying to turn around on muddy roads with limited visibility is a difficult task, especially in a frantic bid to escape the storm.
‘Don’t get caught up in the thrill of the chase and forget to take the photos. There is a big difference between chasing tornados and building a weather photo portfolio. Some of my best weather photos have been taken nowhere near where a tornado would have formed.
I used to take photos on my cell phone all over the country and now regret every minute of it
‘Don’t stand in the road and get power lines or weeds in the ditches in your shots. Get a little muddy if you must and walk into the field to get the clean shot. Ideally line your shot up with something that shows scale on the horizon, a road for perspective, or reduce the foreground in the shot to capture more of the storm.
‘Don’t take every photo in landscape. Switch often between portrait and landscape. Portrait shots help capture the sheer size and scale of the cumulonimbus cloud towers, especially when there is something of known size on the horizon to demonstrate scale. Most of my weather shots are portrait.’
The biggest mistake amateurs make, said Adam, is not using a ‘full-frame DSLR camera’.
He said: ‘I used to take photos on my cell phone all over the country and now regret every minute of it. Storm photography requires serious dynamic range due to frequent inadequate lighting conditions and extreme contrasts between the highlight (lightning) and shadows (cloud bases) in the scenes.’
Becoming obsessed with the ‘rule of one-thirds’ and the foreground are other errors Adam sees a lot.
He added: ‘You are there to photograph the clouds and hopefully lightning. Some of the most visually appealing storm photos include only a sliver of foreground. The foregrounds out in the country often include telephone poles, weeds, and just plain dirt, none having visual appeal.
Instead of thinking rule of one-thirds, think of demonstrating scale of the approaching storm by using the horizon line to your advantage.’
Follow his advice – and you’ll no doubt end up on cloud nine.

Burrito Delivered by Bot, as Long as Students Don’t Trap It
BERKELEY, Calif. — Come lunchtime on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, thousands of students rush out for a bite to eat and head back to class. But for more than a year, a few hundred have stayed put and instead summoned a knee-high robot bearing a burrito, a burger or other meals from a nearby restaurant.
The robot invasion is underway, and the intruders are bringing hot pizza.
Kiwi Campus, a start-up that operates in the square mile surrounding the university, has made more than 60,000 robotic food deliveries in the past two years. “There’s nowhere in the world that robots are a more integral part of its sidewalks than Berkeley,” said Sasha Iatsenia, Kiwi’s head of product. “It’s ultimately a social experiment to see how robots get accepted by a community.”
The company takes a trial-and-error approach. The path followed by each robot at first was guided entirely by remote control by Kiwi employees 3,800 miles away in Medellín, Colombia. So-called pilots, still in Colombia, where the founders are from, now set and adjust a series of way points along a path. The delivery bot is about the size of a proverbial breadbasket, and it carries a single cubic foot of cargo.
The devices, which have an onboard computer and six cameras, cost about $3,500 each to produce in China. Final assembly takes place in Berkeley.
Maya Goehring-Harris, associate director of external relations at U.C. Berkeley, is a superuser of the Kiwibots.
“I generally don’t leave my desk for work,” she said. “All of a sudden, there was a way for my favorite places to bring food to me rather than having to go walk for 10 minutes.”
Ms. Goehring-Harris doesn’t like people-based food deliveries, which she believes can be unhygienic. “Food safety means less human involvement,” she said. Besides the economics work out better. “I don’t tip a robot.”
She was so frequently placing orders — at $2.80 per delivery — that she upgraded to the company’s Prime account at $15 a month for unlimited use.
A few weeks ago, Turhan Ammons, a 20-year-old Kiwibot courier and a student at Berkeley City College, was perched atop a self-balancing electric scooter, rifling through shelves of to-go orders at Chipotle on Telegraph Avenue. He quickly snatched a brown bag and went searching for the robot designated to transport the burrito.
Mr. Ammons and the four other so-called Kiwi Mates on the shift repeat this process over 350 times a day. “It’s like an assembly line,” he said.
Unfortunately, the robot meant to deliver the burrito was pranked by students. They placed it behind a traffic barrier, effectively caging it. “My job is to go around and rescue food,” said Mr. Ammons, who has seniority on the team.
Kiwi is a work in progress. Its bots frequently lurch in front of pedestrians. The GPS is imprecise, so couriers and customers need to hunt down the robot’s locations, sometimes behind bushes. There are regular reports of minor bot abuse by those protesting high-tech invasiveness. Mr. Ammons said nearly half his orders were entirely delivered on foot or Segway.
Mr. Iatsenia, Kiwi’s product chief, is undaunted. Kiwi plans to eclipse a million robotic deliveries on college campuses before the end of next year, and Mr. Iatsenia is guided by a grand vision of displacing car delivery.
“DoorDash and Uber Eats use two-ton Hondas to deliver a small container of hummus,” he said. “That’s very inefficient.”
He cited the use of a tall orange flag (to help find the bot) and a digital smiley face on the bot (to endear it to pedestrians) as design innovations.
“A lot of companies in the space are focused on building the best robot that works amazingly in a lab but that doesn’t mesh seamlessly within the fabric of our sidewalks as the Kiwibot does,” he said.
Fifty miles south of Berkeley are the Mountain View headquarters of Nuro. The robotics company has a similar desire to disrupt, but at a bigger scale. In February, the SoftBank Vision Fund invested $940 million in Nuro, bringing the company’s fund-raising to more than $1 billion. Nuro’s founders previously worked on Google’s self-driving cars.
Scattered about Nuro’s design lab are pizza boxes and grocery bags for testing. Hundreds of design sketches line the walls.
“We’re focused on creating the perfect vehicle for local goods delivery,” said Brian Baker, lead product manager at Nuro.
He pointed to early sketches. “You can see a sidewalk bot-esque feel,” he said. “But as you weave your way down, things become more vehicular with more automotive cues.”
The sketches evolved into Nuro’s R1 road-worthy vehicle. It’s a little more than half the length of a Toyota Camry and roughly half its width. Fry’s grocery stores used two of its five R1s in Scottsdale, Ariz., in a nine-month pilot project there that ended in March. Thousands of customers paid $5.95 to have groceries delivered by the driverless vehicles.
In early 2020, Nuro is expected to put its next-generation R2 vehicle in service for Domino’s Pizza in Houston.
“We saw unmanned delivery of local logistics as an incredibly compelling opportunity,” Dave Ferguson, Nuro’s chief executive, said in a phone interview. “There was a massive market need and a huge societal impact.”
Mr. Ferguson frequently reiterates that Americans take 400 billion personal vehicle trips each year. “Forty-three percent of those are for shopping and running errands,” he said.
The R1 can carry up to 12 bags of groceries. Its current limit of 25 miles per hour is a temporary step to avoid federal safety regulations created for passenger vehicles. Future Nuro vehicles are planned to go up to 45 m.p.h.
“The height of the vehicle has to be roughly the height of other vehicles so that it can be seen,” Mr. Ferguson said. An arching beam on the roof positions cameras and sensors at the best vantage point. Onboard microphones listen for sirens.
Friendliness and accessibility were core design principles. “The main influence of the front fascia is a racecar driver’s helmet with the visor down,” said Ben Julian, industrial designer at Nuro. “This is an all-new class of vehicle, but we want people to trust it.”
Nuro analyzed the layout of the cargo bins so no customers, including those in a wheelchair, need to reach high or bend low. Various door styles were discarded in favor of what became a vehicle with two tall, sideways trunks. They open on only one side so consumers don’t have to remove groceries next to traffic.
With two divided cargo bays, vehicles can make either a big delivery to one customer or back-to-back deliveries of one compartment each. Customers use the vehicle’s smartphone-like screen to open the correct bins.
“It’s kind of a car, but it’s also a hybrid of a consumer appliance,” Mr. Baker said. “Once it’s done bringing your things, it moves on, spending a large part of its life out on the road interacting with pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles on the road.”
The expanding fleet of earthbound delivery bots will be mirrored by a growing swarm of delivery drones buzzing in American skies. In a decade’s time, about 438 million packages will be delivered by drone in the United States each year, according to Navigant Research, a market research firm. By then, about 120,000 drones will be deployed by Amazon, UPS, Alphabet and others that are investing huge sums in the future of delivery bots.
Back on the ground, in Nuro’s “Wall-E” conference room, I met the company’s safety chief, Jennifer Dawson. “As a mom with young kids who has seen people drive like maniacs in my little neighborhood, I would much rather have a Nuro bot delivering my stuff,” said Ms. Dawson, who has extensive experience testing high-precision satellites.
“People are going to be asking in the not-too-distant future, ‘How did we live without it?’”

What are the benefits of IoT-based transportation?
IoT (Internet of Things) is progressively being utilized overall businesses, and transportation is no special case. "Smart transportation" incorporates the utilization of IoT in transportation frameworks. The smart transportation market is relied upon to develop to more than $130 billion by 2024. The Internet of things advancements are equipped for conveying advantages to all regions of the transportation business, including framework, railroads, and air transport.
Today, how about we investigate business transportation and the trucking industry, and how keen transportation frameworks and IoT in coordination can give cost reserve funds, expanded security, and different upgrades. Remember that a large number of these IoT gadgets, advances, and strategies will work also in different ventures, so you may have the option to apply what you read here to your own business.
  IoT applications in business transportation
There are endless applications for smart sensors, GPS following, and other IoT gadgets in the business transportation and trucking industry. Actually, as the business depends on these frameworks further, some IoT applications in transportation are in any event, being commanded. For instance, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration currently requires business vehicle bearers and their drivers to utilize an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) to catch Record of Duty Status (RODS)— mileage, driving time as opposed to sitting time, ordered rest periods, and related details.
ELDs spare drivers' long periods of rounding out administrative work to record this data, and lessen the blunders from the manual passage. It isn't only significant for wellbeing guidelines—it offers some benefit to the business. That is the reason numerous industry veterans are going past this order and utilizing IoT gadgets in different manners to improve their main concern.
IoT applications in transportation additionally convey the accompanying advantages:
 ·         Cost-investment funds
 ·         Operational and store network efficiencies
 ·         Improved client assistance
 ·         Expanded driver security and employment fulfillment
 Here's how:
 ·         Sensors in business vehicles and trucks gather, send, and get information. Drivers are cautioned to perilous conditions continuously to stay away from accidents and traffic blockage. Fuel utilization can be observed and assessed for efficiencies. This makes whole deals altogether increasingly productive (and more affordable).
  ·         Trucks can be observed for mileage with the goal that potential issues can be tended to before vehicle stalls. This is practiced by utilizing a Machine Learning framework to examine the crude information caught by IoT sensors. In view of past cases and occasions, they can utilize the new information to foresee issues that may happen sooner rather than later. These decreases fix costs—precaution support is normally less expensive than fix or substitution.
 ·         Freight conditions can be followed and checked all through the driver's adventure. There are numerous kinds of load that might be touchy to the components—medicinal and transitory payload, for example, often needs to stay over a specific temperature during travel. Another load can be delicate to unpleasant dealing with and vibration. Sensors can alarm drivers and transporters to unsatisfactory fluctuations in transportation conditions, so they can be settled right away.
 ·         Monitory cargo tempering is progressively proficient and secure with IoT sensors. The load can be checked to decide whether it has been messed with, or even just opened, and when. Pharmaceutical or cleanliness items are especially delicate to altering, and it is critical to recognize when something is inappropriately opened when it was opened, and which explicit things were messed with.
 ·        Vehicle limit can be assessed to recognize the extra room. This information can be dissected to combine courses and give the savviest conveyance course, down to the best parking space for emptying freight.
 ·         Drivers can be observed for physical condition and execution. Is the driver braking excessively hard or squandering fuel? Is it accurate to say that they are speeding, jeopardizing themselves and the payload? It is safe to say that they are getting sleepy? New facial following cameras can really observe that occurrence. Cautions about hazardous driving can be sent to administrators, who can make the fitting move.
 ·         Bearers can screen the area of each truck in their armada and when they will land at their goals. Route frameworks recognize the ideal course dependent on climate and traffic conditions. Drivers can be re-directed progressively.
 ·         Loading and unloading are quicker with the payload that is labeled with sensors, RFID labels, or low-vitality Bluetooth gadgets. Drivers furnished with smartphones and tablets stay associated with central command, who is quickly educated about changes in conveyance status and calendars.

How to Identify Visible (and Invisible) Surveillance at Protests
The full weight of U.S. policing has descended upon protesters across the country as people take to the streets to denounce the police killings of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and countless others who have been subjected to police violence. Along with riot shields, tear gas, and other crowd control measures also comes the digital arm of modern policing: prolific surveillance technology on the street and online.
For decades, EFF has been tracking police departments’ massive accumulation of surveillance technology and equipment. You can find detailed descriptions and analysis of common police surveillance tech at our Street-Level Surveillance guide. As we continue to expand our Atlas of Surveillance project, you can also see what surveillance tech law enforcement agencies in your area may be using.
If you’re attending a protest, don’t forget to take a look at our Surveillance Self-Defense guide to learn how to keep your information and digital devices secure when attending a protest.
Here is a review of surveillance technology that police may be deploying against ongoing protests against racism and police brutality.
Surveillance Tech that May be Visible
Body-Worn Cameras

Unlike many other forms of police technology, body-worn cameras may serve as both a law enforcement and a public accountability function. Body cameras worn by police can deter and document police misconduct and use of force, but footage can also be used to surveil both people that police interact with and third parties who might not even realize they are being filmed. If combined with face recognition or other technologies, thousands of police officers wearing body-worn cameras could record the words, actions, and locations of much of the population at a given time, raising serious First and Fourth Amendment concerns. For this reason, California placed a moratorium on the use of face recognition technology on mobile police devices, including body-worn cameras.

Body-worn cameras come in many forms. Often they are square boxes on the front of an officers chest. Sometimes they are mounted on the shoulder. In some cases, the camera may be partially concealed under a vest, with only the lens visible. Companies also are marketing tactical glasses that includes a camera and face recognition; we have not seen this deployed in the United States--yet.

Drones

Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles that can be equipped with high definition, live-feed video cameras, thermal infrared video cameras, heat sensors, automated license plate readers, and radar—all of which allow for sophisticated and persistent surveillance. Drones can record video or still images in daylight or use infrared technology to capture such video and images at night. They can also be equipped with other capabilities, such as cell-phone interception technology, as well as back-end software tools like license plate readers, face recognition, and GPS trackers. There have been proposals for law enforcement to attach lethal and less-lethal weapons to drones.
Drones vary in size, from tiny quadrotors (also known as Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or sUAVs) to large fixed aircraft, such as the Predator Drone. They are harder to spot than airplane or helicopter surveillance, because they are smaller and quieter, and they can sometimes stay in the sky for a longer duration.
Activists and journalists may also deploy drones in a protest setting, exercising their First Amendment rights to gather information about police response to protestors. So if you do see a drone at a protest, you should not automatically conclude that it belongs to the police.
Automated License Plate Readers

Automated license plate readers (ALPRs) are high-speed, computer-controlled camera systems that can be mounted on street poles, streetlights, highway overpasses, mobile trailers, or attached to police squad cars. ALPRs automatically capture all license plate numbers that come into view, along with the location, date, and time. The data, which includes photographs of the vehicle and sometimes its driver and passengers, is then uploaded to a central server.

At a protest, police can deploy ALPRs  to identify people driving toward, away from, or parking near a march, demonstration, or other public gathering. For example, CBP deployed an ALPR trailer at a gun show attended by Second Amendment supporters. Used in conjunction with other ALPR’s around the city, police could track protestors’ movement as they traveled from the demonstration to their homes.
Mobile Surveillance Trailers/Towers
A 'Mobile Utility Surveillance Tower' at San Diego Comic-Con and a mobile surveillance pole in New Orlean's French Quarter
Hundreds of police departments around the country have mobile towers that can be parked and raised a number of stories above a protest. These are often equipped with cameras, spotlights, speakers, and sometimes have small enclosed spaces for an officer. They also often have ALPR capabilities.
Common towers include the Terrahawk M.U.S.T. which looks like a guard tower mounted on a van and the Wanco surveillance tower, which is a truck trailer with a large extendable pole.
FLIR Cameras
Forward-looking infrared (FLIR) cameras are thermal cameras that can read a person’s body temperature and allow them to be surveyed at night. These cameras can be handheld, mounted on a car, rifle, or helmet, and are often used in conjunction with aerial surveillance such as planes, helicopters or drones.
Surveillance Tech That May Not Be Visible
Face Recognition (or other Video Analytics)
Face recognition in the field from a San Diego County presentation
Face recognition is a method of identifying or verifying the identity of an individual using their face. Face recognition systems can be used to identify people in photos, video, or in real-time. Law enforcement may also use mobile devices to identify people during police stops.
At a protest, any camera you encounter may have face recognition or other video analytics enabled. This includes police body cameras, mounted cameras on buildings, streetlights, or surveillance towers.
Also, some police departments have biometric devices, such as specialized smartphones and tablets, that show the identity of individuals in custody. Likewise, face recognition can occur during the booking process at jails and holding facilities.
Social Media Monitoring
Social media monitoring is prevalent, especially surrounding protests. Police often scour hashtags, public events, digital interactions and connections, and digital organizing groups. This can be done either by actual people or by an algorithm trained to collect social media posts containing certain hashtags, words, phrases, or geolocation tags.
EFF and other organizations have long called on social media platforms like Facebook to prohibit police from using covert social media accounts under fake names.  Pseudonyms such as “Bob Smith” have long allowed police to infiltrate private Facebook groups and events under false pretenses.
Cell-Site Simulators
Cell-site simulators, also known as IMSI catchers, Stingrays, or dirtboxes, are devices that masquerade as legitimate cell-phone towers, tricking phones within a certain radius into connecting to the device rather than a tower.
Police may use cell-site simulators to identify all of the IMSIs (International Mobile Subscriber IDs) at a protest or other physical place. Once they identify the phones’ IMSIs, they can then try to identify the protesters who own these phones. In the non-protest context, police also use cell-site simulators to identify the location of a particular phone (and its owner), often with greater accuracy than they could do with phone company cell site location information.
Real-time Crime Centers

Real-time crime centers (RTCCs) are command centers staffed by officers and analysts to monitor a variety of surveillance technologies and data sources to monitor communities. RTCCs often provide a central location for analyzing ALPR feeds, social media, and camera networks, and offer analysts the ability to use predictive algorithms.
