human/Artificial Intelligence
What kind of creature is an AI (Artificial Intelligence) anyway? And what is a human? Can AI think, philosophise and even create art with us about this? In h/AI, de Veenfabriek, Orkest De Ereprijs and theatre group ECHO take up the challenge and make superhuman musical theatre together with AI.
Artificial intelligence has become part of our humanity. It supports our thought processes, influences our choices and takes over more and more tasks from us. Unnoticed, "AI" is already in our devices and systems. Just a little longer and AI will take over our heads. According to supporters, this promises much good, but critics point to future dangers. Will AI help us rise above ourselves? Or will it make us fall to earth with our pride?
h/AI is a superhuman manifestation featuring four actors, a 14-piece orchestra, AI and the audience. How big is AI's influence on the play, the music and what does the audience notice? We will experience it in h/AI, human/Artificial Intelligence: musical theatre by creators, actors, musicians and audiences who, together with AI, enter the future.

Fresha Fest will entertain on Durban beach
Rickshaw Collective – Shelby Strange in a photo by Luca Barausse
The Fresha Festival is a new free fun family al-fresco theatre festival to be staged for the first time on Durban’s North Beach for three days from January 20-21.
Festival Director Emma Durden considered: “What could be more quintessentially Durban than a summer festival of free theatre, and an early morning Saturday dance class, right on the beach?”
The Fresha Festival starts late afternoon on Friday 20 January with a promenade procession and performance showcase to provide an overview of the weekend ahead.
The festival programme runs on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 January, from noon until 5pm, offering a full afternoon of diverse, family-friendly free short shows. Each day will culminate with a Sundowner Showcase under the especially-erected beach Bedouin tent on the Bay of Plenty Lawns at 5pm. All shows are free of charge, however although the evening shows will be free, there will be a donation box available should audience members wish to contribute towards the cost of the performance – on a pay-what-you-can donation basis.
A varied day-time line-up of carefully-chosen participants takes place on the beach promenade and has been selected to ensure that the programme is diverse, fabulous and entertaining. Among the performers are the multi award winning Moving into Dance Mophatong in Road choreographed by Oscar Buthelezi who recently returned from Germany with a handful of international awards for the work; fun street theatre comedy interventions by Gerard O – a street performer from the Netherlands; physical theatre pieces by respected Durban choreographers / performers Mdu Mtshali and Shelby Strange; an installation by Doung Anwar Jahangeer; Feedback: a comedy / physical theatre piece by TQ Zondi and Mpilo Nzimande; productions from various theatre groups working with the innovative Twist Theatre Projects; a piece by Durban Deaf mime artist, Sibo Masondo, and guest productions from Isil Vos of the Netherlands.
Each production will have two 15-minute performances over the weekend.
As part of the festival, there will be a free dance class for all levels of dancer – from inexperienced, so social to serious, on Saturday morning from 8am to 9am on the lawns. Entry is free and all are welcome.
Fresha Fest replaces the popular Musho! Festival. After 11 great years, the Musho! Theatre festival of one and two-hander theatre had its final festival in January this year. With the simultaneous closing of the Catalina Theatre in Wilsons Wharf and the KZN offices of the Performing Arts Network of SA, Musho! in its current incarnation, was no longer viable. It should be noted however, that the wharf side theatre’s management company, Catalina Unltd is still very much operational and has a full year plan for 2017.
The Fresha Festival is directed by Emma Durden and Roel Twijnstra and is presented by Twist Theatre Development Projects. Twist is funded by The National Lotteries Commission. Additional funding for Fresha has also been graciously provided by the Department of Arts and Culture KZN and the KZN Performing Arts Trust. The festival would not be possible without the support of eThekwini Municipality.
Fresha is a hip and happening street / beach open-air festival – the perfect event to wrap up the Durban summer holiday season. For more info, visit www.freshafestival.co.za. / or e-mail [email protected]. And find us on social media for regular updates.

It is an imaginary world where artists are no longer exist. No one could make art anymore and it’s forbidden to mention about it. Government put people into Art elimination exam. Artists need to hide their artistic senses in order to survive. The whole performance shows 3 artists dealing with the same exam, and an interesting angle to see who has the artist senses and who has already given up. And eventually what is that absurd world?
The most challenging work for musicians and actor is, they are not supposed to act or pretend that they don’t have the senses. If they do so, the system could recognise it. They need to find a way to distract the system from scanning for their senses in the exam. It is a tense and at the same time humorous performance.

Turbo Collective BE/NL | Artist Collective
Anonymous 4.3 - Performance
The possibility of being anonymous on the internet has certain advantages and disadvantages. We are able to share without immediate and visible consequences.  Now we are sharing stories that are attached to you. How can we as performers be an anonymous presence while still performing on stage? In a shape-shift transformation, visitors receive the leading role of performer while still being the audience at the same time. The audience is confronted with a story linked to their own face. The improvised way of presenting these opinions makes them again abstract and mimics internet glitches in real life performance. Performers: Julie Kurris, Annelie Koning, Amber Rijcken, Vicky De Visser
// -- // -- // -- //
Vicky De Visser is an art historian, graphic designer and researcher. She achieved her BA in Art History at de Catholic University of Leuven (2012), BA in Graphic design (2016) and a MA in Audiovisual Performance Art (2018) at Sint Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp. She’s currently researching methods for collaborative making through improvisation and the transcendental effect of non-western religious rituals on audience and performers. Amber Rijcken studied fine arts at St. Joost Art Academy (Breda) and the Hochschule fur Grafik und Buchkunst (Leipzig), but the greater part she enjoyed at the St Lucas Art Academy in Gent where she graduated with a bachelor of Painting in the summer of 2017. In the summer of 2018 she started her own master: The Master of Making, which she is still studying and intends to graduate from this upcoming June. Annelie Koning Experimental vocalist Annelie Koning (1992) likes to look for her limits. Because of this she developed a rich color pallete. A sound that suprises, enchant and lingers in your mind. Koning approached her voice as an instrument. Connecting through alienation is central to her work as vocalist and composer. Improvisation is the core from which she works. Julie Kurris Julie Kurris is a maker and performer within the interdisciplinary field. She investigates collaborations with musicians, movers, composers and artists. Her main focus is the conceptual design of the unknown, which includes improvisation. She studied a bachelor at the art school KASK, Ghent (2016) and after she came to Holland to study the master music-theatre T.I.M.E. at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (2018). She played with De Kopergietery, 4Hoog, Huba De Graaff and Paul Koek, Veenfabriek.
