My thoughts on The Rising of the Shield Hero so far Part 3 (Episodes 13-18) Spoilers of course.
Part 1 here and Part 2 here This time I’m typing out what I think of the episodes as I’m watching them where before I did it after. Ep 13: Just when things were getting better for Naofumi, he gets framed for kidnapping Melty Q. Motoyasu is getting even more creepy. It ends with Malty S burning a forest down!? Ep 14: Van Reichnott seems cool, hope he isn’t just playing nice. A past Hero of the Shield did something to the kings family? But why is that Naofumi’s fault? Reichnott is cool but Idol is a dick, hope Raphtalia kicks his ass. Ep 15: More Raphtalia backstory! Idol really thinks he can just say sorry? And he attacks her, but then falls out a window? Serves him right. Raphtalia back story 2! Of people kidnapping Demihumans and them being tortured. One friend of hers is still alive, hope more are. ... Oh no her best friend died! At least she can give them a proper burial. How is Idol still alive? Nvm a T-rex stepped on him. Ep 16: Luring out the Dino to fight it, nice. Suddenly all of the Filolios! A BIGGER ONE! The Queen! Love that delayed blood trope. “I’m going to have to kill you to save the word” Well okay then. I know it won’t happen but still damn. Ep 17: Okay now THAT is a kidnapping. What the fuck Fitoria? I want Filo to win but I don’t think she can. Well, she won (I think) but at least she gave it her all! Filo is now a Queen! (Side note, Fitoria has the opposite problem to Raphtalia, she looks about 9 but really is over 250 years old). Ep 18: What’s up with the old wagon? Are they just going to forget about it? Again with Motoyasu being an asshole. Shut the fuck up Malty S, you lying bitch. That was a fun battle to watch. The fuck is that and who sent it? Was it the king? I bet it was the king! Wow, Naofumi’s shield is strong! Not surprising. The Pope? Lying asshole! Thank fuck Motoyasu is finally listening to reason. I don’t think Ren and Itsuki are dead. This is getting better which is good. As of watching these episodes, ep 19 has come out but it’s only in sub (I’ve been watching in dub). So Once the dub is out I’ll watch it. This means these posts might become one post per ep, but we’ll see.

Recently we've been asking our audience members who their favorite characters are in The Rising of the Shield Hero, and everyone came through in a major way! 62,876 votes were cast in total, resulting in a list of 16 characters with a pair at the top that won by an absolute landslide. Can you guess who came out in the top spot?
With a show called The Rising of the Shield Hero, it's only appropriate that the Shield Hero himself, Naofumi Iwatani, took home the most votes. Naofumi pulled in an impressive 39.4% of the total with 24,782 votes cast in his favor. Fear not, though, because Raphtalia was hot on his heels with 33.5% of the total at 21,088 votes.

盾の勇者の成り上がり(第14話)
第14話 「消せない記憶」 Plot
Myne and her knights set the forest ablaze to force Naofumi’s party into the open, spreading lies that Naofumi started the fire as an escape. The next morning, the border to Siltvelt is closed by Royal decree, leaving Naofumi no choice but to meet the Queen. As they travel, Melty mentions knowing a Noble in charge of the domain, and by surprise, they are met by Van Reichnott,…

The Rising of the Shield Hero – 14 – Unfinished Business
Tumblr media
Despite being aware of her elder daughter’s movements and actions through her Shadows network, the queen still sees fit to let Malty run wild—and run she does, setting a massive goddamn wildfire and informing all the local lords that the “Devil of the Shield” is responsible. I’m not sure what the queen’s game is, but she seems content to wait for Naofumi to come to her. The fire blocks him from Siltvelt, so they head the other direction.
That takes them to the domain of Seyaette once ruled by a lord who was sympathetic to the plight of the demi-humans (as well as Raphtalia’s homeland). That lord was killed in the First Wave, and his efforts went to waste. Indeed, Raphtalia and her family and friends were all victims of the resulting oppression and enslavement of demis under the orders of…Melty’s dad, the king. Again, presumably the Queen was fine with all of this…I guess?
Tumblr media
The new lord of the domain, Van Reichnott, is thankfully a friend of Melty’s, and invites them to his mansion where he agrees to harbor them. Naofumi warns that they can’t stay more than a night lest they get sniffed out by those loyal to Malty and the king.
So they have one night of tasty meals and soft beds, taking turns keeping watch. Melty thinks she should be doing something, anything other than continuing to run and hide, but Naofumi tells her her life and safety must come before any of that, and in time she’ll do what must be done; what only she can do.
Naofumi also tries to comfort Raphtalia, who is suddenly having the nightmares she suffered when she was small. Being so close to her home where she witnessed and endured so much is affecting her on both a psychological and a visceral level.
Tumblr media
As Naofumi feared, they are found out the next morning, as a neighboring lord, Idol Rabier, accuses and arrests Reichnott for harboring the “Devil.” Naofumi hides with Raphtalia (who has an itchy sword hand at the sight of Idol) as Melty says what needs to be said to get rid of Idol and enable Naofumi, Raph and Filo to escape.
They do so, but while Melty believes her name and title will protect her from Idol and that he’ll safely deliver her to father for a proper dialogue, her determination to clear the Shield Hero’s good name probably strikes the wrong tone with a lord who is a member of the church that considers Naofumi the Devil himself.
Tumblr media
Naofumi wavers at the opportunity to get away thanks to Melty’s gambit, abandoning her in the process…but only for a brief moment. At the end of the day, bad rep or not he can’t call himself a hero (not to mention look Raph or Filo in the eye) if he left Melty to mercy of that lord. So the trio infiltrates his castle start methodically taking out his guards.
They arrive in the nick of time, as Idol has tired of Melty’s refusal to disclose where Naofumi is and declares her to be in league with the Devil, which makes her fair game to torture and worse, even taking a nasty pleasure in threatening her and “making her face warp.” This dude and Malty truly deserve one another.
But Melty is rescued, and despite her “plans” being “ruined”, she still thanks Naofumi for coming for her. Naofumi then leaves Lord Idol to Raphtalia to do with as she pleases. He has a lot of demi-human blood on his hands.
We’ll see if she gives in to her rage and takes revenge (for which she’d be entirely justified), or if she stays her hand out of a desire not to go down that road. Like Naofumi with his Rage Shield, there are places you can’t come back from.

Shield Hero Fans Can’t Wait For Raphtalia to Confront Her Past
    *SPOILERS BELOW*
If you’re not completely caught up on The Rising of the Shield Hero, please shield your eyes.
Oof! Everything kicked off with Myne’s attempt to smoke out the Shield Hero party. Thankfully they were able to hide out in a mansion owned by Van Reichnott, a demi-human and new Shield Hero ally. Unfortunately the mansion was ransacked by a notorious lord and Melty separated from the party in order to help the rest of the party escape. However Shield Hero made a point that it was necessary to get Melty as he had made a promise to keep her safe and that she had shown that she does believe in him. He let Filo’s intense need to save her friend run wild. The party really looked like superheroes in this episode.
Throughout the episode, Raphtalia’s PTSD was very visible and with good reason - her story after her parents death was linked to a location nearby, incidentally the notorious lord’s castle. Despite her PTSD, she did make it clear that she wanted to confront her past. She even took a bit of whippings in her triumphant walk to truly face the sadistic man that caused her and so many other demi-humans an incredible amount of pain.
This episode had a lot of action and gave context for Raphtalia’s upcoming episode. Shield Hero himself provided a place to process all of it:
