I asked our househelp what her thoughts about vote buying. Sabi niya, normal daw yun kasi pano kung P1,500 yung pinamigay. I was shocked. Ang liit ng P1,500 eh! I was expecting P5,000 man lang ganun.

Me (reading silently): Klide ano do KOTO?
Klide: Love ko 'to 🤣
Tumblr media
Elections are always intense. It's inaccurate to say that this one has been the most. Pero siguro, it is perfect to say that this, and last year with Marcos, has been the most degenerate. Sobrang kababaan na, and there is still a long way down to go - we have not even experienced what Mindanao was like. Still to me, this election has been so dismal.
Balikan natin sa simula. The first time I saw the MakaTorres banner, I felt hope. It looked and felt promising. Sabi ni Torres, babaguhin nya ang Makato. It was so naïve of me to think na totoo yun. But he came not to help better the lives of Makaton-ons. He came to seek vengeance to those of us who supported Legaspi.
His supporters say he was "the best" mayor this town had. But what did he do? What did he accomplish? Like the twenty pesos rice, where was the district hospital he promised? And how many mayors did you know in your lifetime para macompare mo ang the best?
In Alot's words,
"Bukon ta abi sanda it pulitiko."
And he could not have said it better. There is a blurred line between politicians and public servants. Kahit itanggi natin, the poor will always seek the help of politicians. And Torres was not one, so he did not change Makato for the better. Even worse than the Legaspi, he created and cultivated a culture of division. From the time he became mayor, Makaton-ons have been very specific of who voted for who; careful in helping a kapartido; always demonstrated revenge at pagiging mata-pobre; chose even more immoral leaders; and started massive vote buying that we could never keep up.
In generous addition, those in higher office were an example of selfish dynasty and money-worship. As evidenced by millions of pesos given to Punong Barangay candidates. Meanwhile, Marcos taught us that it is okay to be bobo and a debate-coward, falsify documents and spread extremely wrong information and twist facts.
Back to Torres, let's multiply his cultural contributions by the number of years he served and look at us now. We have leaders who do not value education, who have extra-marital affairs, mapagbigay in a new context, experts on mud-slinging games and palengkera actually and on the net. This culture of division seeped down to the barangay level.
Personally, the past two elections' effect on me was lost hope and faith in people. Why would they vote for a 30-something married woman with a 60-something married boyfriend or a 40-something woman with no experience but no-breeding rants on Facebook and in real life? Why can't they verify facts so that they would know that Dawn fought with Lotlot because Lotlot was buying votes even in the voting polls? Why would they gloat if they won, isn't it a scary responsibility? Why would they spread hurt sa mga kapwa kabarangay lang naman? Ano ba ang pagkakaintindi nila sa "Honorable" before their names, a title for pokpok and palengkera? What kind of people are they and were did their values go? What happened to us?
What is left now but to feel despair? Makakabangon pa ba? Baka hindi na, wala nang pag-asa. I don't think healing and oneness would come under the wings of sinful people. Besides, they don't seem to want it, too. They want us divided. Traditions, values, virtues, word of honor and morals were gone, were not given importance and were not even glanced at. If I were the Legaspi, I'd let them have Makato. It's so effing rotten anyway.

The paradox of vote trading in Nigeria, By Obo Effanga
The paradox of vote trading in Nigeria, By Obo Effanga
At the root of the problem is the economic imbalance and inequality in our society, which, if fixed, would to a large extent reduce the number of poor people whose vulnerability currently is such that they can easily be dangled pittances in exchange for their votes. However, it is also a paradox that those saddled with the responsibility to fix the economy are also the primary beneficiaries of…

“Electorate Is Bribed With Jobs, Is Claim,” Toronto Star. May 19, 1932. Page 26. ----- Speakers for Harry Price Heckled by Brown’s Line Residents ---- Alderwood, May 19. - Frequent heckling interrupted Conservative leaders speaking in behalf of Harry Price, Conservative canddiate in the forthcoming West York by-election, at a meeting of Brown’s line residents in Sir Adam Beck school last night. Hon. W. G. Martin, Ontario minister of welfare; J. Earl Lawson, M.P. for West York; Karl Homuth, Reeve MacDonald of New Toronto and the candidate were the speakers.
Hon. Mr. Martins declaration that the Conservative government is fighting a square fight in the West York campaign was interrupted by a heckler who charged that Mimico hospital has been laying off men, but now, on the eve of a by-election, ‘you can’t move around there for employees.’
‘There has been no attempt to bribe the electorate,’ the speaker replied. ‘The government is endeavoring to cope with the unemployment situation in every way.’
‘The depression is sweeping the entire world,’ he declared.
‘Except Russia,’ came an interruption from the back of the hall.
‘Would you rather live there than here?’ asked the minister. ‘Why not?’ was the retort. ‘We’re not getting anything here.’
‘No suffering or want will be allowed to cross the threshold of any Ontario homes,’ Mr. Martin said,
‘Oh yeah?’ said a voice. ‘What has happened up to now?’
‘No one is starving,’ the speaker replied. ‘I do not know of any other country that is doing more for the unemployed than this province. We are in earnest about this great problem.’
