Today was the big annual light switch on in town, and for once there were no cars on the roads. Although that mostly had to do with the fact that instead of the main streets being open, they were covered market stalls and were bustling with people. It was known to be traditionally busy, and you’d stayed the night at Anders’ place - as he was closer - in order to get here early. Not that you did much sleeping. And you still had to set off before the sun came up because it wasn’t just your town that turned up here, and he wasn’t within walking distance of town. You had a nice secret weapon in Preston’s little apartment, which was situated centrally, near the main shopping street, and had spaces out the back. Not many in his block had cars, and he had enquired with his neighbours to secure one for the two of you. So you’d turned up to his place this morning and walked the rest of the way. Despite the lack of sleep - and you would certainly blame your boyfriend for that - you were all in very high spirits. It was chilly, but you were bundled up, and there was something about the cold today… Due to the excitement surrounding the market it just hit a little different. You expected more snow; it had already fallen pretty steadily all week and the weather seemed to suggest it would stay that way. Anders laced his fingers with yours, pulling you closer and drawing your hand into the pocket of his coat. You couldn’t help smiling, even though you weren’t looking at him, and you nudged into his arm playfully, causing him to chuckle.
Preston, who was walking in front of you, turned with a look of feigned disgust: “You two aren’t about to embarrass me again are you!?” “Oh my god, we haven’t even had breakfast and he’s started.” Anders muttered, before rolling his eyes, “No! Could you walk any slower?!” Preston scoffed, “I’m admiring the ambience. Taking in the silence before it gets too busy... Where do you wanna go for breakfast anyway? Geez, we coulda had some at mine. Woulda been cheaper.” “As if you’re paying!” You couldn’t help laughing at their bickering, some things never changed, and for that you were extremely grateful, “First off, it’s tradition-! And I’ll pay, let’s just get out of the cold for a minute…” You’d all been doing this for years - the market was a tradition in town after all - and it was never less exciting than previous iterations. For the past few years, however, you’d had the addition of your boyfriend and his son. There were a few stalls that had become staples, but there were a lot of independent ones that just kept being added to, and you always loved looking at these. A lot of your gifts had started to become more local and to your friends around the world these had become like gold dust. Each year you received multiple texts asking what it was going to be this time, and you always teased them all about it. Now you were with Anders this became even funnier - because stall hopping became a long string of gasps, before he shook his head at you, smiling, ‘Alright, who is this one perfect for!?’  Preston usually hung around with you both for about an hour or so before he graciously took his leave to wander alone. Sometimes you thought he was merely humouring you… sometimes you felt he actually wanted to hang out with you both. So whilst at breakfast you discussed what you were most looking forward to seeing, and what route you were going to take. With the market spread out over most of town you could start and finish the circuit virtually anywhere; and you liked doing different variations of your walk each year - and then revisited stalls where you’d need a little more time to think.

Sometimes you thought Anders humoured you just as much as Preston did, because he didn’t ever do a lot of shopping here. Although you got the distinct feeling that he came down on another evening to do that - because occasionally you talked about things you liked and you ended up being gifted them. Sometimes you were surprised you hadn’t caught each other in the act, as this was something you did too. But you knew Anders would tell you otherwise; you thought that in reality he just enjoyed your company here and getting in the holiday spirit. After all, of the two of you, who was the one decorating their house to the nines? You always cackled when driving up, because you could literally see his house from blocks away; such a vibrant mass of colour down an otherwise dull street. No-one else made the effort that he did. 
This year Anders had hauled you over to help him put them all up (well, Preston was supposed to help too, but he spent most of it sitting around with a beer directing you) and you were in fits of laughter for the whole day. So once the whole damn thing was finally lit up at night, you almost felt sick from how much you were laughing. His son was laughing too, but you felt for different reasons. Anders didn’t really care, he was just happy that you were both joyful, and that things were looking festive. You’d helped him decorate the rest of the house too, and tried to reign him in to being at least a little tasteful about it. “Inside or outside, not both.” “Aw, c’mon Y/N, you gotta do it properly!” “Good god, what are you planning!?” Still, in the end you thought he’d managed it. In fact one of the main reasons that Anders’ house was a little more decorated than yours was the amount of time you were spending here. You’d invited him over for a date and he’d peered around, then looked at you with a frown that said you were insane. “You call this decorating!? This is so SAD!” You were almost tempted to agree with him… As predicted, Preston eventually moved further and further away from the two of you. However, this year you didn’t just let him go, and you and Anders looked to each other with identical smirks. “OI!” Preston stopped, shoulders moving in a cringe before he twisted back to you, “...Yeah?” “Not cool enough for you or something-!?” You had always prided yourself on being the cool one, so that tease was well landed when he practically grimaced. “If you wanna leave just say something!” Anders was a little louder about it and Preston turned red. “Oh my god - guys! What did I say!” He shuffled back over, trying to calm you both down. “Just ask to go!” “C’mon I’m not 12-! I’m not even 17! I have to ask!?” You peered around him, spying a few of his friends kicking around just up the street. That’s probably where he was heading. Anders folded his arms tilting his head, “You’re still my kid.” Preston took a deep breath and sighed, “I know…” That caused your partner to smile gently, “Go on, go enjoy yourself. Just don’t be a stranger okay?” “Okay…” Preston was a little bashful, but gave Anders a hug anyway, “See ya later, dad.” Anders blinked a couple of times but returned the hug gratefully, and you caught that smile of his you knew he’d likely be wearing all day. Preston offered you a hug too, which you gratefully accepted, “Go enjoy yourself with your friends!” “Yeah!” He laughed, “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do-!” You gave him a look that might suggest you didn’t know what he was talking about, before Preston gave you a wink and waved you both off. You turned to Anders’ smile and couldn’t help beaming yourself: “If you could see that look on your face.” He laughed and as he looked to you, holding his hand out for yours again, that smile widened and Anders’ blue eyes glittered; “Oh… I know!” *** If there was one theme in all your purchasing this year, it could only have been candy. The food stalls were out of this world and you’d strategically come to them all at lunchtime. Unfortunately you were both eating and buying, and your sweet tooth had taken over. You were glad this was still going to be a good walk-! But the festive candy was just too cute to pass up - and it would be rude for you not to try some, especially when offered. Anders had resisted a little at first, but now was in full swing with you. And every time one of you commented that you were stuffed and probably couldn’t eat another bite, you came across yet another stall. At this point - unsurprisingly - you were on a sugar rush and Anders was groaning and trailing you. You hadn’t made him carry anything, at least he could be grateful for that - but he was pretty sure he knew exactly what you’d be eating over the festive period. “Do you really need all that candy?” At least he said it with a laugh. You turned to him eyes wide, “Uh, yeaaah--!” He looked amused and bit his lip like he was goading you into something but, standing and staring at you laden with bags full of nothing but candy, Anders couldn’t help it: “Oh my god, seriously, are you a child?” You knew exactly what he was saying but, instead of agreeing, you folded your arms and gave him exactly what he wanted: “Says YOU!” “Me?!” Anders placed a hand to his chest, and was smiling even though he was trying to look shocked, “Whatever could you mean-!?!” “It’s the Holiday season Anders! Everyone is entitled to act like a child!” He chuckled, walking towards you, “Exactly, so why are you complaining!?” “I’m not complaining - you’re complaining!” “Mmm…” He tipped his head gently with a squint, “I can complain about your candy consumption if you can complain about my decorating.” You gasped, “Always with the decorating!” “You started it!” The two of you kept staring each other down for a minute, until you realised that you were standing in the middle of the street arguing like children. Upon which you fell into peals of laughter. Eventually you both managed to calm down, and Anders wiped his eyes, taking deep breaths of cold air to stop his voice from wavering with laughter too much. “So, uh, kiss and make up?” You giggled, thinking you might have just graduated from children to teenagers: “I think…” You took a step forward to be nearly toe to toe with him, “that would be wise!” He wound his arms around you as you leaned up into him, your lips to his as you closed your eyes. Suddenly you were glad of all that candy, because it made him taste even sweeter. An amalgamation of sugars and chocolate coated his own familiar taste and you couldn’t help but groan into the kiss. You were surprised Anders didn’t snort at you just for that; but he squeezed you to him a little tighter.  You pulled back, eyes closed for a moment just to savour him, opening them again and breathing; “I think there’s sugar still on your lips, should I kiss it off?” Anders smirked as you clung on to his coat, “What, didn’t get enough of a sugar fix?” “From you?” You leant back up into him, smiling, “Hell no!” *** As the evening began to roll in, with renewed excitement in the air, the crowds were drawn further downtown to watch the lighting of the tree and the strings of lights running the length of main street and beyond. You of course had immediately spotted someone roasting marshmallows, and Anders only rolled his eyes. ‘Of course!’ Still at least they tasted good and were of the right consistency, as you pulled him through the crowds to get a good view. “Only you would be able to find another place selling sugary treats!” “I must be honed in!” You grinned. “A sugar radar. Sounds about right-!” You looked back to him with a smile, “I like sweet things. That’s why I’m with you. The radar didn’t lie-!” He couldn’t help turn a shade of pink at that, “Okay, you’ve definitely had too much!” Anders remained beside you and cuddled your body into his as you stood watching the MC do his best to warm up the crowd - for the most part everyone was in good spirits and it worked charmingly. In fact you didn’t think one person didn’t join in with yelling the count down. You’d both spotted Preston - still with his friends - and had waved over, but left him to hang with them. There was a gasp through the crowd and then a cheer as all the lights went on. You couldn’t help but also light up, feeling like a child again. There was just too much wonder and joy about this time of year not to. It always made you excited. Anders smirked, leaning into you, “Bet that’s not the only thing that gets turned on tonight…” You knew that he knew you wouldn’t be able to resist bantering back to his cheekiness: “Well, you can turn me on later.” There was a growl to his voice that proved his point: “Oh… I think I will.” You walked slowly through the streets admiring all the different collections in vibrant colours; there had been some new strings added and the town had clearly got very creative. You thought suddenly about making the trip into NYC to see all the lights there… although somehow you felt this could be better. Especially with the context. When the chill in the air began to settle in, you decided it was about time to call it a night. Finding Preston just to say goodnight and hug goodbye. Although you weren’t exactly hurrying back, despite your joking. And eventually white flakes began to fill the air. Anders paused and blinked before continuing the walk a little slower, watching it begin to stick to the ground. “Oh, what would you know, it’s snowing.” He commented, but realised you weren’t beside him anymore. You had stopped a little way down the street behind him, looking up in wonder at the sky as the flakes began to drift. He walked back to you, slipping his arms around your waist and rested his head on top of yours to watch them fall. “Snow always looks so pretty. And so soft when it’s settled...” “Not as pretty as you.” He mumbled, but smiled himself. “Okay, Mr. Smooth.” You chuckled, “I suppose you want to get me home?” He smirked, “Think that one is your prerogative. But I can certainly warm you up-” “Uh huh!” “-In the car on the way back.” You scoffed, taking his hand back in yours, although neither of you moved, “Maybe we can watch for a few more minutes…” “Then I’ll have to warm you up even more.” You could hear that smirk in his voice as you pushed your head back into his chest, and couldn’t help but smirk yourself. “I mean I really hope you do. First you gotta turn me on... like a Christmas light.” Anders scoffed, “Oh what, like that’s hard?” You bit back your immediate reaction, ‘what’s hard?’, but couldn’t help but snort; “Oh no, I’ve seen you with your own. I think you got this.” “Oh yeah.” He pulled away from you slightly to place a kiss to your neck that made you shiver, “I’m practically a pro.”

Loving a Warrior
Pairing: CrystalAngel (G’raha TiaxWol/G’raha Tiax Angelique) Word count: 1990 Content: Soft fluff, with a small hint of desire
To be in love with a Warrior of Light was not an easy task, especially if someone could not comprehend the fact that they could be called away without warning and the downside was unfortunate that at time the call could not be ignored. Someone in a normal setting could not possibly comprehend all that G’raha had learned to understand. Ever since he had moved into this small home unit with Angelique there had come to be growing pains aside from a new home, getting adjusted to taking aetherytes to arrive at Mor Dhona, the social aspect of their relationship would often be interrupted even after an already long day. He’d have his warrior, his lover, his Angel as he often teased her, in his arms until the infernal chime of the link pearl would go off just as they had been getting comfortable.
Angelique was always apologetic when she had to go, giving G’raha a kiss before she would take her leave in order to go attend to whatever business had called her away. She always promised to make it up to him, and more often she did, not that he would ever hold her duties against her. Though it seemed the realm refused to let the weary Bard ever take a moment to rest aside from after major battles where he had to often make sure she stayed firmly in bed as according to Krile, Y’shtola, Urianger, even Alphinaud’s persistence. It was a relief to him to know that the Scions had developed a sense of understanding their friend’s well-being. 
Today though had been originally forecasted to be something different, Angelique had been intended to be home by six that evening when a meeting was supposed to be over. G’raha had done his best to culminate a meal consisting of their favorite dishes without feeling overwhelmed. It had been intended to surprise her with a quiet night with it just being the two of them doing as they wished before turning in for an evening. Even setting up the table with an orchestrian roll with some nice music and the lighting lowered down to a nice dim at least according to the device that had been left with them.
However, just as the excitement had settled in, the time had started to pass becoming the sixth hour in the evening. As the seventh had come and gone, he curiously tried to connect via the linkshell they carried specifically for their own communication, but all he heard was a dull and empty ringing. G’raha decided to wait and as the eighth hour came and went, despite his ears lowering and the slightly defeated sigh, it would seem that Angelique had gotten held up and couldn’t communicate. Again. As much as he did hurt a little on the inside, he didn’t hold it against her and wouldn’t for time to come, as she could not truly say no (even if she wanted to) when someone needed help. 
The red haired miqo’te took a moment to take in the meal that had long since cooled, but had covered the portion for his love because it would be a shame and very bitter feeling to just simply toss something out that not only had he worked on, but also ended up being one of Angelique’s favorites. G’raha left the orchestrian on, but turned out the lights in their living space, heading to one of the adjoining rooms that had been decreed his study with a cup of tea in hand. The least he could do was at least keep himself busy until she came home. After all that composition of his research notes into a book form weren’t going to write themselves.
Before midnight, the lock to the main door would click open after the key had been put in and Angelique sighed softly as she rubbed her eyes a little with the heel of her hand, the soft patter of mechanical feet behind her as a smaller version of G’raha Tia raced inside. “Gods…” she murmured softly, sliding her hand to the back of her neck the leather lightly pulling tugging with the leather. “...That took ages...didn’t think I’d ever be able to get back home…”
As she closed the door she looked around, the home was mostly dark, but there were faint lights coming from the crack in the door that was G’raha’s study. Reaching over she flicked on one of the switches for a floor lamp and bathed the living area with a soft amber glow that only stretched so far. Then she saw that the table had long been set up, but only for one person. Curiously she walked over to lift the covering only to be surprised when she saw the serving of what was supposed to be dinner and something that was a mixture of their favorites, but due to the lack of wispy steam most piping hot meals often had; it was visible that it was long cold at the worst and lukewarm at the best. Setting the cover back on the plate, watching her footing as the wind up toy went to a darkened room that was the bedroom she would walk to G’raha’s study, slowly opening the door with the softest creak of hinges.
“Raha?” she called out to him gently, looking around at the mass amount of books, research notes, a model of the Crystal Tower in a corner, and there at his desk, head cradled on his arms, open book used as a pillow with ears flicking at the slightest of sounds on instinct, but not stirring. Crossing the floor, Angelique stepped over the book piles that she needed to talk to him about cleaning up later on, and settled behind him for a moment, hand slowly touching the top of his head and stroking in smooth and even movements. Still G’raha didn’t stir, but his breathing was deep and slow, deeply asleep. She did feel bad, knowing that G’raha had been excited and waiting for her to come home on time to spend time together, “I’m sorry.” she murmured softly, leaning over and pressing her lips gently to the side of his head and he returned with his own sleep filled murmuring that made no sense.
Angelique left the study for a moment before returning with one of their favorite duvets; a black and blue one with gold stitching for constellations and stars that they had commissioned one of their friends who was still learning her ways around weaving. Opening it up she would drape it over the sleeping miqo’te’s shoulders, reaching over to turn off his table light. While she would normally wake him, she'd hate to wake him during this time of night when he was so deep in his slumber. When she had finished she went to eat what he had worked hard and cooked for her, cleaned up the dishes and cutlery that had been used before she too had turned in for the night on their soft bed.

Russet ears flicked a little at the faint sound of a bird call, the waft flowers’ scent on a summer breeze tickled G’raha’s nose, but there was something else hanging in the air; deeper, darker, a familiar scent to him. Slowly his eyes opened to the morning light leaking in through his study window, curtains swaying softly in the breeze. “Mn…” He yawned softly, fingers slightly cramped from holding a feather quill in his sleep, as he started to lift his head with his cheek unpeeling from the parchment, something that felt like dried ink sticking to his skin. However, in his haze he felt the blanket slide off his shoulders and absently he saw it, realizing that it was their favorite duvet, most likely pulled from their bed and jolted awake a little. Miraculously he didn’t stub his bare toes on his book piles before he walked out into the living room and saw that in the kitchen was Angelique who looked as if she had just got out of bed.
To his vision his cheeks flushed a little, wearing nothing but a shirt that was most likely his with a small peek of small clothes under the hem. Her hair often put up in a bun had now fallen down to her back like a sheet of spun gold, haloed by the morning sun. Her voice rang in his ears, soft singing to keep her bardic vocal chords fresh. Ah, the many times he had seen this during late nights, to be greeted by this sight gave him life even with his cheeks warming softly. Quietly stepping behind his arms slowly circled around her waist, pulling her close and putting an end to her singing.
“Good morning.” she greeted him, feeling her emerald gaze on him while his lips brushed to the exposed flesh of her neck.
“Mornin’…” he greeted with a slight mumble in his voice, “...Did you just get home…?” he asked quietly, ruby orbs glancing down to the two metal cups with a soft tan brew; coffee mixed with cream and sugar. A soft chuckle greeted his ears and almost made him weak to the knees.
“...No, I came home close to midnight last night. And I’m so sorry, you went to all that hard work to spend time together, and I left my link shell here by mistake so I couldn’t contact you. The meeting ended up having some interruptions and took so much longer with the delays.” She explained looking over to him as she stirred the cream and sugar into their coffee. 
She left her link shell here? That explained why she never answered it. G’raha breathed out a soft sigh in relief, closing his eyes and his arms hugged her tighter, but his fingers slowly slid along to the bottom hem at her front, fingertips slowly tracing along the flat plane of her stomach. “It’s fine, I figured it was something work related keeping you away.” he spoke softly, leaning over and giving her a soft kiss to her lips when her head turned to his direction. So soft, so warm, only been a day and he had already missed the faint taste of the shine on her lips. “Mm…” he hummed and pulled back before starting to trace along her neck once more, “...Do you have your link pearl on?” he asked quietly.
“No, it’s in my drawer.” Angelique murmured, G’raha savoring the slight tremble of her skin under his fingertips when he chuckled deeply. 
“Good.” He purred reaching around with a hand he pulled away from the warming confines of her skin and his shirt, picking up the cup of coffee into it, “Today...I want you. Will such a hard working warrior appease this selfish lover?” he continued to speak low, and smirked just a little as he could almost feel her slacking against him.
“Yes.” she breathed softly and then looked at him with a small smile, “After all, they can contact someone else for a little while.” Raising a hand she brushed her thumb against his cheek, wiping away an ink smudge on his softly sun-kissed skin. “I hate it when you use that voice against me. You know I can’t resist when you do that.” she teased him, but received that deep chuckle followed by the rumble of a purr in his chest while a russet tail wrapped around her thigh, fur tickling against sensitive skin.
“You love it though.” G’raha would reply with a small smirk before he would lean in to capture her lips once more.
To love a Warrior of Light was to be patient, to be understanding that not often would their time be spent all together. To be flexible in the scheduling in case of mishaps. But when wrapped in each other’s arms, each other’s presence, those were always the moments that would be cherished forever.

Will you lose weight by spinning?

The basis of a healthy weight
“You are what you eat.” I’m sure you’ve heard this saying before. And it’s true. In the end, it all starts with nutrition. If you’re healthy and don’t eat too much, you’ll keep a good weight. If you eat too many calories, you gain weight, and if you create a shortage of calories, you lose weight. It sounds so simple. But of course, other factors also play a role, causing one person to gain or lose weight faster than the other. Gender, age, and muscle mass, among other things, influence how each person’s metabolism works. Still, a calorie deficit is necessary to lose weight. You can achieve this by dieting, but this is often a temporary solution. As soon as you stop dieting, you’ll gain the weight back.
Can you lose weight without a diet?
The art of losing weight is to eat in such a way that you don’t create a ‘bad’ deficit. Your body needs sufficient nutrients, such as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins to maintain your immune system and to feel fit. When losing weight, you prefer to lose fat rather than muscle mass. With too little or the wrong proportions of food, this is a risk. Usually, if you eat healthy, you can also create a calorie deficit through exercise so that you lose weight in a responsible way. You can choose between cardio and strength training, but of course, you can also alternate these. Most importantly, do something that you like and that you can keep up. If you are quite overweight, then running is not the best option, because it is very taxing for your joints. Swimming or spinning would then be a better choice.
A flat stomach or thick legs due to spinning?  
People often wonder if spinning gives you a flat stomach. It used to be thought that you would get a tight belly by training your abdominal muscles. Unfortunately, abdominal exercises alone don’t create a six-pack. If you want to get a flat stomach, besides training your abs, you will also have to watch your nutrition and train your large muscle groups. These are your legs, back, chest, and shoulders. By training these large muscle groups and the growth of your total muscle mass, your metabolism will increase, even at rest.
“Doesn’t spinning give you thick legs?” The answer is: “No.” Look at racing cyclists, they never have fat legs. If you cycle regularly it is likely that you will lose fat on your legs. This makes your legs look more beautiful and more muscular. But the idea that you get thick legs from spinning is wrong.
Burning maximum calories with spinning
Spin classes are a very effective way to lose weight because you burn a lot of calories per workout. Exactly how many calories you burn differs per person and has to do with your weight, among other things, but a person weighing 80 kilos burns 561 kcal with a 45-minute average spinning workout and 748 kcal with 60 minutes of the same workout. That’s two big lunch meals!
'MET-value': Metabolic Equivalent of Task  
Do you want to apply this calculation to your weight and know exactly how many calories you burn? Then use the following method. We use the MET value for this calculation. MET is an abbreviation for the Metabolic Equivalent of Task and this value says something about the intensity of the effort. Sleeping has the value 0.9, walking the dog 3.0, and normal spinning workout 8.9. A heavy spinning workout is valued at no less than 9.8! This MET value is multiplied by the weight in kilograms, then by 0.0175 and finally by the number of minutes.
So if you weigh 60 kg and do 30 minutes of spinning, then the sum for a normal spinning workout is -> 8.9 x 60 x 0.0175 x 30 = 280 kcal.
You can imagine that this form of cardio is very popular for losing weight. In addition, spinning is much less stressful for your hips, knees, and ankles than, for example, running. More and more people don’t want to depend on the weather or class times anymore and buy a spinning bike to use at home. There are several apps available to do online spinning workouts. Losing weight as a goal
If you want to lose weight, we recommend doing a workout on your spinning bike three times a week. Start slowly, build up your fitness and don’t overdo it, then it will remain fun. Calorie requirement
Do you want to calculate how many calories you need in a day and keep track of how many calories you take in? That is when you have to calculate your calorie requirement.
That can be done by means of this formula:
1. You can calculate your basal metabolic rate (BMR) or the number of calories burned in 24 hours without activity using the formulas below:
BMR Women -> 655 + (9.6 x weight in kilos) + (1.8 x length in cm) – (4.7 x age in years) BMR Men -> 66 + (13.7 x weight in kilos) + (5 x length in cm) – (6.8 x age in years) 2. The next step is to calculate your PAL value. Your PAL value is the amount of exercise you get on average per day. – Little to no exercise (all day in bed) = 1.2 – Light exercise (if your work is not active and you don’t do any sports) = 1.375 – Normal exercise = 1.55 – Heavy exercise (physically active work, or daily exercise) = 1.725 – Very heavy exercise (professional athletes) = 1.9
3. You now have your BMR and PAL value. With these 2 numbers, you can calculate your daily calorie requirement: BMR x PAL = your daily calorie requirement.
So your movement is already included in the above calculation!

Now that you know your personal calorie needs, it is important to know how many calories you are actually taking in. You can keep track of this with, for instance, the MyFitnessPal app. It helps you keep track of what you eat and drink. Usually, it’s sufficient to get a good idea of your diet, and after a while, you can estimate what and how much you can eat to stay on/under your calorie requirement. Suppose your calorie requirement is 2500 kcal a day and your goal is to lose weight; then you have to make sure you consume less than this amount of calories. A deficit of 200-300 kcal per day is easy to maintain, a large daily calorie deficit can cause dizziness, a feeling of hunger, and other complaints. Welcome to day 9!
Today I wanted to talk to you about metabolism. We always hear about metabolism, and that seems to be the big weight loss holy grail. “How to speed up your metabolism!” “I don’t lose weight because of my slow metabolism!” etc. etc.
So I wanted to know, is metabolism really such a big deal? And is “fixing it” really a thing?
Well… seems like the answer is yes and no?
So, I was easily able to find information on boosting your metabolism.
HealthLine suggests eating protein, drinking cold water, doing hiit workouts and strength training, standing more, drinking green or oolong tea, eating spicy foods, sleeping enough, drinking coffee, and cooking with coconut oil.
Active recommends eating breakfast, including protein, coffee, and cold water; more protein, calcium-rich snacks, green tea, spicy food, interval workouts, fish oil supplements, and sleep.
Even Harvard Medical School gets on board, suggesting protein, green tea, hiit, and weight training.
So experts seem to agree on how to “boost” your metabolism, but does it really work?
Weeelllll…….
Maybe not?
So first, let’s look at what metabolism really is.
The Mayo Clinic explains it this way: “Even when you're at rest, your body needs energy for all its "hidden" functions, such as breathing, circulating blood, adjusting hormone levels, and growing and repairing cells. The number of calories your body uses to carry out these basic functions is known as your basal metabolic rate — what you might call metabolism.”
They go on to explain that metabolism can be affected by factors like your body size and composition, your sex, your age, your food processing, and your physical activity.
So knowing that, is it really our metabolism that is sabotaging our weight loss plans?
Weeeelllllll….
Probably not.
The Mayo Clinic continues, “It may be tempting to blame your metabolism for weight gain. But because metabolism is a natural process, your body has many mechanisms that regulate it to meet your individual needs. Only in rare cases do you get excessive weight gain from a medical problem that slows metabolism, such as Cushing's syndrome or having an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Unfortunately, weight gain is a complicated process. It's likely a combination of genetic makeup, hormonal controls, diet composition and the impact of environment on your lifestyle, including sleep, physical activity and stress.”
So, yes, you might have a medical condition that slows your metabolism, but that isn’t likely the actual reason.
Endocrinologist  Mahtab Sohrevardi with Rush Medical Center is also pretty clear on this. She says,
“"Every day I see patients who say, 'I can't lose weight. My metabolism must be slow,' " [...] It almost never is. Factors such as age, sex and body size cause natural variation in resting metabolic rate — the amount of calories, or units of energy, that we burn just by being alive. But those differences are normal, and they are not usually the root cause of obesity or inability to lose weight. The real problem is almost always consuming too many calories and not getting enough exercise, which leaves us with excess energy that we store as fat.”
And Dr Chih-Hao Lee told Harvard Health, “You can't entirely blame a sluggish metabolism for weight gain [...] The reality is that metabolism often plays a minor role. The greatest factors as you age are often poor diet and inactivity."
So, our metabolism isn’t necessarily “slow”, but can we really “hack” our it to make it super fast?
Weelllll… probably not.
Eat Right discusses 4 metabolism myths, including this one. Their answer? “No magic food will speed up metabolism. Some studies have shown that green tea and hot chilies temporarily boost metabolic rates, but the lift isn't very significant. The path to a healthy lifestyle includes a balanced eating pattern filled with nutrient-rich foods, not a diet doused in chili peppers.”
The Mayo Clinic agrees, “Don't look to dietary supplements for help in burning calories or weight loss. Products that claim to speed up your metabolism are often more hype than help, and some may cause undesirable or even dangerous side effects.”
So are we just stuck then? Nothing we can do?
Well, no, actually. Another “myth” they busted was that we can’t change our metabolism at all. Eat Right said, “While it's true that genetics help determine our metabolic rates, we can boost metabolism by increasing lean muscle mass. Muscle is metabolically active, which means that people with lean, muscular bodies need more energy to function than people with a higher percentage of body fat.”
So it isn’t that boosting our metabolism will help us lose weight, but gaining muscles will boost our metabolism (and lose weight too!)
The Mayo Clinic backs this one up too. “While you don't have much control over the speed of your basal metabolism, you can control how many calories you burn through your level of physical activity. The more active you are, the more calories you burn. In fact, some people who are said to have a fast metabolism are probably just more active — and maybe fidget more — than others.”
They suggest adding 30 minutes of physical (aerobic) activity into your day, doing strength training twice a week, and having a more active lifestyle.
Endocrinologist Mahtab Sohrevardi concures, saying "The best ways to lose weight are staying active and eating a healthy diet — not trying to change the speed of your metabolism.”
And being overweight doesn’t help. Rush explains, “The process of metabolism has two main parts. Anabolism helps you grow new cells, store energy and maintain your body tissues. Catabolism breaks down fat and carbohydrate molecules to release energy that fuels anabolism, keeps you warm and enables your muscles to contract. Insulin is one of the many hormones that help regulate this cycle, by triggering anabolism after you eat. If you're significantly overweight, there's a high risk that your body will stop responding to insulin. As a result, sugar stays in your blood instead of being stored as energy.” This is essentially type 2 diabetes. Doing anything that messes with your hormone levels, especially insulin, can slow your metabolism. As we learned last time, a lack of sleep can cause your insulin to be thrown out of whack.
And even losing the weight might not help. “Having been overweight can continue to affect your metabolism even after you've lost the weight. That's one reason maintaining weight loss is much harder than keeping weight off in the first place.  "Take two people who weigh the same: one who's been at a normal weight all their life, and one who has struggled with obesity," Sohrevardi explains. "The first person can get an average amount of activity and eat an average amount of food, and nothing will happen to them. But often the second person, if they go from a restricted diet back to an average one, will have a high risk of putting a lot of the weight back on."”
That said, starvation is not the answer; that can actually hurt your metabolism. This is the last myth that Eat Right busts. They said, “Creating a large calorie deficit in attempts to lose weight can backfire. Our bodies are smart and programmed for survival. Severely limiting calories can make your body think it's entering a famine, and that it needs to do more with fewer calories. Your body adapts to the restricted caloric intake, and uses fewer calories to perform the same tasks.”
And some of the other suggestions might also be hurtful, not just over-reducing intake and potentially dangerous unregulated supplements.
Rush Medical Center elaborates on some of these risks. “In reality, the speed of your metabolism remains roughly the same no matter when or what you eat. The few exceptions to this rule are not good weight loss strategies. For example, studies have shown that caffeine slightly increases the rate at which you burn calories in the short term. But your body becomes used to caffeine over time, so the effect doesn't last if you're a regular coffee or tea drinker. Products promoted as metabolism boosters tend to be similarly ineffective, and some have dangerous side effects.”
They recommend eating healthier foods instead, which just metabolize better.
So what are we to do? Eating chili peppers chased by cold green tea all day won’t really help, and losing weight won’t even completely solve it. We can’t even blame a medical condition, as it statistically isn’t likely that we have one that affects our metabolism.
So what can we do?
Actually, here Rush Medical Center touches on something that I just learned and shared on Wednesday. Remember that “thinning” brown fat thing? Hey, here it is again!
Though pointing out that muscle burns more than fat, which is why muscle-building exercises can help, Rush suggests something else.
“While building strength can boost your resting metabolism, getting more aerobic activity is the most efficient way to burn more calories. "Even walking 25 or 30 minutes a day, five days a week, is helpful," Sohrevardi says. And more intense exercise — running or aerobics, for example — burns even more calories. In addition to burning calories and building muscle, exercise has been linked to increased amounts of brown fat. The vast majority of our fat is white fat, the kind that stores energy. But we also have a few ounces of brown fat, often around our neck or shoulders, which actually uses energy to help keep us warm.”
There’s that brown fat again! Turns out it can help with our metabolism!
So, unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a magic way to bump our metabolism a meaningful amount. All we can do is eat right and exercise, and we’ll still be at a disadvantage because we were once overweight.
That’s, actually, a little depressing. I much prefer the fantasy that I just had to drink more green tea and I would magically lose more weight.
Not all of my research will have exciting or happy endings, I suppose.

A lot of people that you see running and working out, avoiding any fast food and choosing a fresh salad instead do it for the physical benefits of staying in shape rather than for their body image. Of course, there is nothing wrong in wanting to feel proud and happy with the way that you look.
Health benefits of working out – in the following we will list only a partial amount of the numerous health benefits that working out has for both your mental and physical health:

How to lose weight without losing muscle at the same time
Losing weight fast should go hand by hand with increasing your muscle mass and muscle strength. You cannot have the results that you wish and leave one of them behind – diet or regular working outs. Anyone who is convincing you to believe in otherwise is not looking out for your health.
Eat enough proteins through your diet
If you want to lose weight, you need to work on reducing the calorie intake on a daily basis. And this is where it gets tricky. In order to lose weight, you are required to reduce the number of calories that you normally intake but avoid reaching a calorie deficit at the same time, if you are interested in maintaining and increasing the muscle mass that you have, that is. You see, when your body faces a calorie deficit, it starts to use the fats in your body, and as soon as the stored fats are gone, your proteins are next. And pretty soon you will begin noticing as your muscle mass reduces and you lose muscle strength. Yes, you have faced muscle loss and all of that because you have led your body to a calorie deficit.
So listen closely – while reducing the number of calories is the right way to lose weight and especially fats, you have to choose to include the right foods in your diet to do so. That means including lots of clean proteins in your diet while excluding any added sugars, fats, processed food and everything that is labeled as a health destroyer.
And when we say clean protein we really do mean clean proteins – nothing that comes in the form of a supplement or a pill or powder. You will have to do some shopping and get all of the essential, natural protein sources that we have including eggs, soy, lean beef, chicken, seafood, milk, cheese, yogurt etc.
Plan your daily menu around these products so that you include enough of them to satisfy your body’s daily needs for protein and more. That way, not only will you lose weight, you will also maintain and work to increase your muscle mass at the same time as well. (8)
Work towards total-body strength training
You cannot deny the fact that working out is the fastest and the most beneficial way to lose weight and improve your body image. Regular working out is also the way that will get you to maintain and work to increase your muscle mass and strength while you are losing that unwanted body fat. But the question is – which workout should you choose?
We kindly recommend all of our readers to proceed towards total-body strength training. Strength training will not only get you to sweat and lose more calories than any other workout, but it will also increase your muscle mass and strength and promote the production of the human growth hormone and testosterone – both vital hormones responsible for great-looking, lean muscles without any fat around them whatsoever.
Recovery is just as important as exercising
You might be wondering why you are not losing weight and building lean muscles even though you spend every free moment at the gym. Let us ask you this – have you ever wondered what might be the exact problem? Recovery is just as important as exercising – do not let yourself forget this.
Cortisol’s levels, inflammatory hormone, rise when you are putting too much stress on your body and getting too little sleep or no sleep at all. Cortisol is what inhibits weight loss and increases muscle degradation which apart from leading to no weight loss, it leads to losing muscle mass and muscle strength as well. The importance of pre-workout carbs and post-workout proteins
Your body craves the right carbohydrates in order to function well. Carbohydrates help energize your body, boosting your physical performance and improving the quality of your workouts. (11) That is why you should introduce yourself to the concept of pre-workout carbs where you are supposed to intake enough healthy carbs through fruits, legumes, whole grains, etc.
These healthy carbs will give your body the energy that it needs to get you sweating during your workout, losing that unwanted weight. And then we have the concept of post-workout proteins where you are supposed to intake enough proteins right after your workout while your muscles are warm and able to grow the most with the help of proteins. The products offered by AdvoCare are sorted into four different product lines: trim, active, well, and performance elite.  Each of these are focused on helping you lose weight, keep your energy levels high, improve your overall health, or improve sports performance.
Their endorsement strategy focuses on getting professional athletes and their coaches to use and recommend their products—this makes the product an easier sell, since people tend to trust the recommendations of public figures they know.
Among AdvoCare’s advocates and boosters are CrossFit champion Rich Froning, Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, and NFL coach Tom Coughlin
Unfortunately, Advocare’s popularity is waning, at least according to Google Trends.  Overall search volumes have been decreasing fairly steadily year-by-year, though search traffic does spike right after the new year.  This is likely explained by people wanting to take the 24-day challenge as a New Year’s resolution.
Products
Each of the four categories of products offered by AdvoCare has a specific need it is designed to fulfill.
The trim category of products includes products like meal replacement shakes, carbohydrate absorption inhibitors, and traditional weight loss supplements.  There’s a range of products to reduce cravings and increase fullness.
The active category is for people on the go: it includes healthy nutrition bars to snack on, a sugar-free energy drink powder called Spark, and a five-hour-energy-like energy shot called Slam that provides a jolt of caffeine and a hefty serving of B vitamins.
The well category is focused on overall well-being and health maintenance.  As you might guess, this is the category that includes multivitamins, green powder supplements, fiber supplements, probiotics, and a wide range of more specialized vitamin and mineral supplements.  AdvoCare offers their own line of calcium, vitamin C, zinc, and DHA (an omega 3 fatty acid), so if you are already taking these supplements, it is easy to make the switch if you are going to become an AdvoCare distributor or customer.
Finally, the performance elite category contains many of the pre-and post-workout supplements you’d expect as an athlete or fitness enthusiast.
Mass Impact, for example, is  a classic creatine-based pre-workout supplement, and there are several types and styles of protein powder for use as a post-workout supplement.  These are supported by more niche use products like rehydration and energy gels for endurance sport athletes, pre-workout snack bars for people on the go, and herbal extracts that claim to boost oxygen levels during exercise.
The real star of AdvoCare’s product line, however, is undoubtedly their 24-day challenge package.  The “challenge” is to follow the supplementation plan, which is a ten-day cleansing phase, followed by a fourteen-day refueling and rebuilding phase that’s supposed to re-energize your body.
The cleansing process involves a high-powered probiotic supplement, alongside a heavy dose of omega 3 fatty acids and dietary fiber and the aforementioned Spark energy drink.
Unlike other trendy diets, it’s not a “cleanse” in the sense of ceasing your normal food intake and replacing it with something aggressive or outlandish; rather, the supplements are supposed to do the bulk of the cleansing work: probiotics for repopulating your intestinal bacteria, fiber for increasing your frequency and regularity of bowel movements, and omega-3 fatty acids for its wide range of health applications, from brain health to cardiovascular well-being.
The second phase, the “max phase,” involves a weight-loss supplement designed to increase your metabolic rate, a meal replacement shake that’s loaded with protein (which is known to help with losing fat mass while maintaining muscle mass), and another box of AdvoCare Spark energy drink.
Though not a part of the supplementation program, AdvoCare’s 24-day challenge also involves some guidelines on eating healthier foods.  Their program is focused on lean meats, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats, just like you’d expect from any rational dieting strategy focused on both losing weight and improving health and well-being.
Compensation plan
Advocare’s MLM strategy is pretty straightforward and does not involve nearly as many hidden costs or requirements as some of its MLM competitors.  The distributor startup kit costs $59, which enables you to order products at wholesale costs, then resell them for retail prices and keep the profit.
There is an annual fee of $50, but beyond this there are no mandatory costs or auto-shipping.  As a distributor, you can also earn a 5-20% commission on the sales of other distributors below you.
If you can move a lot of product, you can become an advisor, which involves a one-time purchase of $2100 of products, and allows you to access higher wholesale discounts.  You also earn money from overrides, bonuses, and incentives, which are not available to baseline distributors.
Recap
AdvoCare has a number of things going for it that put it high up on the list of desirable MLM companies.  First, its fee and payment structures is simple and transparent, meaning you are less likely to get snagged up in hidden costs.
There is only one initial fee for becoming a distributor, and one annual renewal fee.  There are additional ways to invest money beyond this, but none are required.
Second, their sporting figure endorsements make it easier to sell the products through your network of connections, because people are more likely to have heard of the products and are more willing to trust a product recommended by a sports figure.
Finally, the 24-day-challenge functions as a good sales technique that allows you to sell a relatively large amount of product at once, plus introduces new people to the company’s products.
Overall, it’s a pretty good bet if you’re looking to get involved in the MLM industry.
But if you aren’t set on going the MLM route, there are definitely more profitable opportunities out there.

Isagenix review – a good business opportunity?
Isagenix is a large, well-known network marketing organization that sells diet supplements focused on weight loss, daily health, and anti-aging.
Their product strategy focuses on prepackaged “solutions” instead of standalone individual items.
As a result, the company is best-known for its 30-day weight loss system and its 9-day deep cleanse, and it has several other time-based or solution-based product packages.

Isagenix has been around for over fifteen years, and thus far it has a fairly good reputation as far as long-standing MLM companies go.
It hasn’t run afoul of any legal regulations and hasn’t had any courtroom disputes so far, which is a lot more than many of its competitors can say.
The company is also reasonably well-known, with a long-term pattern of interest tracking upwards as measured by search engine traffic.
As with many program based weight loss and health improvements (both inside and outside the multilevel marketing world), interest in Isagenix slides in November and December and rockets upwards in January as a result of people making New Year’s resolutions to try to lose weight or improve their overall health.
This occurs year after year in internet traffic data, which means there’s an annual trend to this–getting in at the right time can help grow your business more effectively.
Products
The leading product for Isagenix is their 30-day nutritional cleansing solution.  The $373 package contains several different products designed to a be a complete solution for rapid weight loss.
One of the core components of this cleanse is their IsoPro meal replacement shake.  Isagenix follows the admittedly effective strategy used by several other weight loss programs, which is to replace meals with a shake that contains a heavy dose of whey protein.
Not only does this cut out whatever you’d typically be eating for that meal, but it replaces it with something that’s been shown to increase weight loss over similar replacement shakes with equal caloric content.
This was demonstrated in a 2015 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  In the scientific paper, the researchers describe how they used a whey protein supplement in obese subjects on a weight loss program over the course of 13 weeks.
Half the subjects in the study were given a whey protein supplement, while the other half were given a placebo that contained the same amount of calories.
At the study’s conclusion, the researchers found that the whey protein supplement allowed similar weight loss but a relative increase in muscle mass compared to the control group.  This is a good thing, not just because muscle mass is desirable but because muscle mass itself helps burn more weight.
Another key part of the cleanse and weight loss program is the Ionix Supreme liquid drinks.  It’s supposed to be a drink that helps reduce stress and increase energy by providing lots of B vitamins, superfood extracts, and herbal extracts that promote well-being.
Unfortunately, the drink is flavored with “molasses powder,” which is a very sneaky way of just saying “sugar.”  The good news is that the serving size is very small; it’s not really a beverage you enjoy, rather, it’s a drink you’d down in a small one-ounce shot.
Other cleanse ingredients include high-protein snacks (also unfortunately flavored with the obesity-promoting sugar fructose) and a metabolism boosting Natural Accellerator supplement which is based on green tea extract apple cider vinegar, cayenne, and cinnamon, among other ingredients.
Some of these ingredients are moderately effective weight loss supplements, but the per-pill dosage is pretty low.
There has been one scientific test on the efficacy of some of Isagenix’s products, though not of the full 30 day cleanse.
A 2012 study in the scientific publication Nutrition Journal used the IsaLean meal replacement shake in an experiment involving obese women.
This was combined with intermittent fasting, and was able to produce substantial weight loss over eight weeks, as well as a decrease in LDL cholesterol, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
Compensation plan
Joining Isagenix as a distributor costs $39 per year, or $29 if you agree to an autoship.
You must move 100 product volume per month to be eligible for retail discounts and commissions, so this basically mandates an autoship.  It’s a binary compensation structure, meaning you have a “left team” and a “right team” based on two first-line distributors below you.
Beyond retail products, the commission and bonus structure of Isagenix is very weak.
This is reflected on their income disclosure statement, which admits the painful truth: Over 80% of Isagenix members make no money at all, and another 12% earn an average of $145 per year.  This means that nearly 95% of Isagenix members earn almost nothing!
These numbers are brutal, even for an MLM with an aggressive compensation plan.  Comparable competitor MLMs have more like half of their members making money, and annual earnings in the $1,000-3,000 per year range.
It’s not clear whether the failure of members to make money is a result of poor product quality or a poor compensation plan that doesn’t have much in the way of bonuses or downline commissions, but in either case, it’s not good.
Recap
The real problem is this: Isagenix doesn’t really offer anything special.  It’s just another weight loss and anti-aging MLM with no real attractive features and no exclusive products.
The earnings potential is pitiful, so the odds are majorly stacked against you.  Steer clear of this one; there are far better options in the health and weight loss MLM market.
