Kaiju Week in Review (October 8-14, 2023)
youtube
This week was defined by a barrage of news on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, with new posters, a trailer, a viral site, a screening of the first episode at New York Comic Con, and critic reviews dropping for the first five episodes. Fans being fans, most of the ensuing discussion has centered around which of the Monsterverse Godzilla's designs is superior, as both will appear. (Unless we get an intermediate stage for the part of the show set in 2015.) But going off the reviews, those of us who prefer to obsess over worldbuilding will have plenty to delight in while the dorsal plate debates rage.
youtube
Toho may not be building a Megalon suit this year for his 50th birthday, but he's still going to star in a short film dropping on November 3. Godzilla vs. Megalon (spelled with VS instead of 対 in Japanese) is the sequel to last year's Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex, again directed by Takuya Uenishi. The computer-animated monsters will be joined by at least one live-action person (a Seatopian, natch).
youtube
Almost a year after its Godzilla DLC, GigaBash is adding another quartet of characters from a famous tokusatsu franchise—the Ultra Series. No surprise that one of them is the original Ultraman. I figure Gomora's a shoo-in for the second spot, and after that, I'm not sure.
youtube
Crunchyroll has picked up Toho Animation's Kaiju No. 8. They didn't specify a release date besides April, but I assume this will be a simulcast, since that's also the month the show premieres in Japan.

We’ve finally reached a point where Godzilla and Ultraman are in the same fighting game and not a bad sports game or in the same game but being unable to be on screen together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a life long fan of the kaiju genre, it makes me happy to see Toho finally lightening up. And allowing these crossovers to happen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really can’t wait to finally have this. Now all that’s missing are Gamera and Kong and maybe a Mecha franchise. Like Gundam or even something like Mazinger Z, Evangelion, or Getter Robo. Or even Power Rangers/Super Sentai.
Now if only Japan could get this DLC for Ultraman since they aren’t allowed for whatever legal reason. It’s complicated.

It is wild and cool and notable that 2022 gave us not one, not two, but THREE new kaiju games, each of them different and each of them great.
GigaBash is a party brawler that's similar to the Godzilla games developed by Pipeworks in the early 2000's, and just dropped DLC featuring Godzilla and three other Toho kaiju! Shame it doesn't have a physical release.
Dawn of the Monsters is a scrolling beat 'em up, inspired in part by SNK's King of the Monsters, with a cool Mike Mignola-esque art style. Glad I got a physical copy from Limited Run games.
Finally, Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher on the Switch is just Monster Rancher...but with kaiju from the Ultraman franchise! You get to raise and battle your own kaiju!! I imported the Asia exclusive physical copy since it was only slightly more expensive than downloading, and it came with trading cards for summoning specific kaiju too!

Got Gigabash and both the Godzilla/Ultraman DLC packs. So far this is incredibly solid, as far as 3D monster fighters go this might be the best that they've ever been between the character designs trying to avoid tropes for the most part and the gameplay taking some cues from Super Smash Bros.

Thanks for the tag @happy10thousandyears!!
tag someone you want to know better
favorite color: Tbh i can never settle on one but I do like purple a lot, even if i rarely ever wear it or use it much in my art lol
last song: Ghost Dive by Polkadot Stingray because I am nothing if not a pokemon nerd (also the animated mv is v cool)
last movie: Memories, because I had seen Magnetic Rose ages ago, but I hadn't yet seen the other 2 from that anthology, and tbh I think they're worth a watch, Canon Fodder especially has some really interesting directing & overall I think both it & Stink Bomb are good pieces of animation to check out, even if Magnetic Rose is the standout one for sure.
currently watching: For once I'm not really watching much tbh, outside of the latest Pokemon anime, Pokemon Horizons which is like. really really good. Oh! And i'm also currently going through Ultraseven because a good friend recommended it to me, and i'm not super deep in rn but i'm really enjoying it!
other stuff i watched this year: uuuh a Lot of things tbh, but the ones that I enjoyed the most were the OG Kamen Rider show, Ultra Q (beloved) & Ultraman. I don't watch that many live action shows normally, so it's been nice discovering a few new things
shows i dropped this year/didn’t finish: None really? so far i've finished all the ones i started this year, or if I haven't yet i plan on doing so soon. I've not yet watched all of the second season of Witch from Mercury because i got busy, but i do really want to finish that soon!
currently reading: i'm currently rereading Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint for the third time because teehee hyperfixation, and i'm also reading at the same time In a Glass Darkly by Sheridan le Fanu
currently listening to (sneaky additional question!): I don't really listen to a lot of podcast either tbh. I started Malevolent some months back but i was fairly disappointed with it so i've not picked it up again in a while. I don't really like leaving things unfinished though, so i might catch up someday.
currently working on: I'm actually working on a game project around roman law for schools & universities, because after a game jam we turned the project into a whole ass game, so i'm still currently doing a bunch of art for that!! Close to the finish line now....
current obsession: well the pokemon dlc dropped last week so im currently utterly obsessed with Ogerpon & her story, she's great, i love her so so much, and also just, everything about the dlc story (kieran & carmine live rent free in my head now i guess)

DLC Idea for a Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher sequel
So, since there’s obviously some lack of polish in the new game, I figure we might get some DLC if it gets a sequel.
My idea for a themed DLC would be a tongue in cheek “Monster King” DLC,  referencing Toho monsters
Mechagiras: A clear relative of both Showa Mechagodzilla and Trypticon from Transformers. Comes from the show Ultraman 80. Low defense but its interdimensional nature would allow trippy stuff.  A guerilla warfare mechanical that warps in, destroys things, then retreats to a heavily fortified base in the 4th dimension where it can summon a forcefield generator.
I imagine unlock conditions could be tied to the fourth-dimensional kaiju Bullton (another kaiju I want), and you’d have to choose which one you want to raise first ( because to bring out Mechagira’s full power outside the fourth dimension you’d probably need a bulton-derived power source using the two objects that grow into Bullton when combined)
Tumblr media
Demaaga: included for resemblance to the 2000s Godzillas in aesthetics
Tumblr media
Standing in for Gigan we got Dorako for hookhands
Tumblr media
(Techniques: Threat display with wings, fireballs, and sonic screech)
And Chameleking for tummy saw and green and gold color.
Tumblr media
(didn’t have a motor for it since you know,budget,... but game already including stuff not in shows)
Biollante stand in is her older sibling Leogon  (who she shares scriptwriters and artists with her), who I’m convinced inspired Blastoise and the Bulbasaur line in pokemon.
The pipes that it shoots vines out of are inspired by pitcher plants. Can easily expand its moveset by having it also fire other things like acid or sticky sap
Tumblr media
I wanted to include Paragler, the clear Varan homage from Ultraman Max...but they sadly have no real abilities to build on into a moveset that stands out.
Tumblr media
Ultra showmakers, please bring them back with new powers!

I've been playing Dawn of the Monsters and I ADORE this game you have no idea. I've been grinding every level to get an S+ rank, I've been unlocking every upgrade and pallette for the characters, reading every in-game document and trying to piece together the lore.
All the monsters have great designs and really fun alternate color schemes that reference other toku characters. There's even an upcoming DLC that'll be adding an arcade mode and a new monster, Meteor Temujin, which is basically a megazord or Voltron type combining mecha.
Tumblr media
I really hope this isn't the ONLY DLC we get. I'd like to see a story expansion and more playable fighters, and maybe new enemies. Since Gigabash recently partnered with Toho, I think it would be fun to see DotM partner with Tsuburaya Productions to license some official Ultra Kaiju and add a story DLC based on Ultraman.

Kaiju Week in Review (December 4-10, 2022)
youtube
GigaBash's Godzilla DLC is now available, and they defied expectations (well, my expectations) by offering a lineup of Heisei Godzilla, Kiryu, Showa Gigan, and Destoroyah. I can't offer any insights into how they play, since I haven't had time to delve into this game, but they certainly look great.
Tumblr media
An extremely special collection of Godziban episodes are out on Blu-ray and DVD. The main attractions are two all-new specials ("The Greatest Monsters on Earth" and "Mothra vs. Bagan"), starring the imposing lineup above, plus the entire Destroy All Monsters cast. Extended versions of the season 1 episodes "Son of Minilla", and "The Godzilla Who Came on Christmas Eve!" are also present, and the Blu-ray adds on the Godzilla Fest 2020 special episodes "The Xilien Who Turned Red" and "Lullaby of the Skies" and a behind-the-scenes featurette. Both formats come with a sizable booklet too. They're pricey, as is typically for Japanese home video, so as eager as I am to watch Bagan get pulverized by a couple of moths, I'll probably wait for someone to rip the Blu-ray.
Tumblr media
Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors - All Hail the King! #3 is mostly Ghidorah doing Ghidorah things (although this might be the first time he's burned down Westminster, good for him). King Caesar can't wake up soon enough. This issue also plays a bit with All Hail the King's status as an unplanned sequel. In #2, Cedric questioned why King Caesar didn't intervene when Godzilla was on the brink of destroying the world in the original comic. The Shobijin have many abilities, but breaking the fourth wall isn't one of them, so they gave a vague answer about destiny, and it's just adding to the friction between him and Karen, a member of the family who can communicate with the shisa. Interested to see where they're going with this.
Tumblr media
Tickets for the U.S. limited release (January 11/12) of Shin Ultraman are now live. Since Fathom primarily books at Regal, Cinemark, and AMC theaters, Fandango should allow you to see most anywhere it's playing near you. I will be dragging as many people as I can to the subtitled showing.
Tumblr media
Mill Creek has issued the 1992 animated series Ultraman Kids: 3,000 Light Years in Search of Mother on DVD. I know nothing about it, and those designs are powerfully unsettling... but it's never even been subtitled before, so good on them?
Tumblr media
Normally I wouldn't bother mentioning the millionth Godzilla crossover with a mobile game, but The Ants: Underground Kingdom is an unusual pick—it's a strategy game where you run an ant colony. These are clearly special ants, since the teaser shows them giving Godzilla a boost after King Ghidorah knocks him down. (I'd rather see him take on the ants from THEM! though.) The collaboration runs from December 16 to January 14.
