Little things from Star Trek Voyager that make me soft:
- Harry inviting Captain Janeway to Tom’s holobar for games and the way Janeway seems so touched at being included
- When Tom makes a cheesy joke at the helm and Janeway rolls with it while smirking at him knowingly (ex. “What if we set up a bicycle in the mess hall and pedal our way home?” “Now why didn’t I think of that.”)
 - When the ship is traveling through the Void and Harry writes a concerto on his clarinet and Tuvok stops to listen to it because he knows Harry worked hard on it
- When Chakotay makes little jokes with Harry and chuckles to himself when Harry jokes back like a proud dad
- Tuvok and Seven bonding over how dumb they think humans are
- The way Janeway looks at Sam Wildman when Sam tells her she’s pregnant. Janeway is clearly sympathizing with her nervousness about having a baby in the Delta Quadrant but she congratulates her anyway because she knows Sam needs to feel supported in her decision.
- When Tuvok tells Neelix he isn’t completely inept during security training and Neelix treats that like the massive Vulcan compliment it is
- The achingly gentle way Janeway looks at all of her crew members when they’re going through a tough time
- How defensive Chakotay gets when any member of the crew questions the captain’s judgement
- At Janeway’s funeral in “Coda,” she manages to keep her emotions in check until Harry starts talking and then she cries
- The fact that Janeway cries like a real person. Like, her face scrunches up, her lip quivers. She’s not out here crying those fake-ass stoic tears that other fictional characters do. She’s crying for real.
- When Tom covers for Harry’s indiscretion because he knows how important Harry’s clean Starfleet record is to him
- The way Janeway hugs Kes during Elogium and sits to talk to her about puberty while gently stroking her hair and listening to her patiently
- The fact that there’s a pot of coffee ready in Janeway’s ready room all the time and you just know that Chakotay is using his own replicator rations for her
- In the wedding between duplicate Tom and B’Elanna when Chakotay walks B’Elanna down the isle and Janeway walks Tom down the aisle and they both look like the proudest parents to ever exist
- Chakotay and Neelix’s background friendship. You have to squint for it, but they have some funny little moments together that indicate an offscreen friendship that I wish we could have seen more of
- The fact that Janeway goes to visit almost everyone who gets admitted to sickbay
- Tom telling Harry that he will never forget Harry defending him in “The Chute” simply because he is Harry’s friend. Not because he had something Harry needed, or because Harry couldn’t survive without him, just because “this man is my friend.”
- When Janeway flat-out tells Harry that she thinks of him like a son and she’s proud of how he’s grown since coming on Voyager
- The way Tuvok just really, really loves his wife
- The fact that Janeway makes baby blankets for babies born on Voyager
- How absolutely into Captain Proton Harry and Tom get (and how into character Janeway gets when she plays Arachnia)
- Chakotay and Janeway exchanging looks when someone says something dumb, especially when it’s one of their officers and they just look amused/exasperated
- “Chakotay? Are you there?” “No, I left an hour ago!”
- Tom inviting Seven to play ping pong because he thought she might enjoy the math behind it
- The way that Janeway never writes Neelix off, even though he can be a pest sometimes. If he says he knows how to do something, she lets him take a whack at it. If he’s got a story to tell and there’s no immediate danger, she listens. When he’s clearly baiting her into a conversation where he can show off his knowledge of Earth history, she bites and encourages him to tell her more because she knows it’s important to him to know about the history of the cultures represented on the ship.
- The fact that Neelix tries to get to know the cultures represented on the ship, even when he gets it wrong sometimes. He has good intentions.
- The entirety of Neelix and Tuvok’s interactions during “Riddles.” I was a hot mess that entire episode.
- Janeway finding out Tuvok’s birthday, making him a cake, baiting him into thinking she was mad at him so she could do a dramatic reveal, and Tuvok blowing out the candle even though he thought the candle was dumb just because she’s his best friend and he loves her
- The way Chakotay turns into Hearteyes McGee every time Janeway puts her hands on her hips, cocks her brow, and tells off an enemy
- How excited the whole crew gets when they find a cool space anomaly that isn’t immediately threatening them
- The fact that Janeway does her best to allow her officers to pursue their interests. Like when Tom asks to build the Delta Flyer, she lets him because cool spaceships are his Thing. When they find that lost ship from the early Mars missions, she lets Chakotay lead the away mission because that’s his Thing. She lets B’Elanna and Harry make a ton of adjustments to the engines because it might help them get home faster, but also because that’s their Thing. She understands how frustrating it can be to be locked in a spaceship for years without a way to pursue your interests and hobbies outside of the holodeck so she does her best to let them do their Things when opportunities do arise.
- When Tom and Harry start a street brawl because they tried to play drunk tennis with some aliens and Janeway dresses them down for unbecoming conduct but then is like “.... so did you win?”
- The fact that both Harry and B’Elanna have fever dreams where they very clearly reveal that they see Janeway as a mother figure
- Seven of Nine and Naomi’s friendship and how pure it is and also how Seven always calls Naomi by her full name
- Also Neelix and Naomi’s friendship
- And the fact that Naomi is the Captain’s Assistant and Chakotay and Janeway send her back and forth between the two of them with messages because it makes her feel important
- I guess just Naomi Wildman in general
- Seven and The Doctor connecting over music

Nine Months (NC17)
Chapter 3. Longest f’ing chapter of the whole thing so far...
Month Two: Sacred Ground
The Magistrate’s lack of answers did nothing to settle the already hostile state of Kathryn’s stomach. Something needed to be done, and soon. She couldn’t bear the thought of losing Kes, not like this. Reflecting on the information Neelix had provided, she decided that, like King Nevad, she refused to accept Kes’ ‘death sleep’. The pressure of her epiphany caused the waves of nausea to crest and crash into her with full force.
Flying out from behind her desk, she barely made it to the sink basin before reliving, what appeared to be, everything she had eaten since being stranded in the Delta Quadrant. She could make out the sound of an override code being entered into her Ready Room door.
“Kathryn?”
The deep timber of her first officer’s voice traveled over the sound of her retching in the small private bathroom.
The warmth of his hands seeped through the layers of clothing as he massaged at her lower back and gathered the loosened hair out of the way. Tears stung at her eyes as the gagging slowly subsided. She was gently guided back into the room and gently deposited on her couch. She felt bereft during his momentary distance as he replicated a glass of water.
“Have you been to see the Doctor? I know he’s busy with Kes, but I’m been worried about you.”
Kathryn sighed into the glass, taking an experimental drink, and shook her head. He lowered himself onto the couch close to her. She leaned into his space and he brought an arm around her shoulders and pulled her body to his. His hand massaged at the muscles of her arm; her eyes slipped closed.
“There has to be a way, Chakotay. These monks, their body has an immunity. Somehow, this ‘ritual’ changes the chemical makeup of--,” she stopped short as bile began to rise in her throat once more.
Two strong arms hauled her to her feet and practically carried her back to the bathroom. He grimaced as her dry heaving turned to exhausted moans of pain. His concern skyrocketed as he felt the racing of her pulse beneath the tender skin of her wrist.
“I have to help her. Beam to the planet, gather data for the Doctor to find a cure for Kes. I’m going--,” his hand on her chin halted her train of thought.
“Kathryn! You can barely stand. Let alone experience the rigors of a spiritual journey. Exactly what is it that you hope to accomplish?”
Her features grew hard and the ‘Captain’ resurfaced. She pushed her way from his embrace and staggered back to sit at her desk.
“If you’re asking whether I expect to speak to the Ancestral Spirits—no, of course not. But, something happens to the monks when they go through the ritual, something that allows them to enter the biogenic field, and I intend to find out exactly what that is. It might provide clues to a treatment.”
A small painful burp caused her to grimace. He gave a deep sigh and moved to sit across from her, his hands folded tensely in his lap. He knew that point of attempting to talk her out of the decision was moot.
“We’ll have to find a way for the Doctor to monitor your physical condition, and you should have a way to call for an emergency beam-out if you need it, as a precaution,” he added the final thought to appease the tiresome look she gave him.
“We just don’t have any idea of what the ritual entails. And if you’re already ill, I don’t feel comfortable sending you down there.”
She rolled her eyes and he noted the small wince she gave, as the gesture must have intensified her dizziness. Kathryn pursed her lips and pinched the bridge of her nose.
“I know that you are concerned for my well-being, and frankly, I’m a bit apprehensive myself. But, we’re running out of time. Test of endurance or not, I need that information. Whatever the explanation may be, spiritual, scientific, or otherwise; that does not matter. Right now, a member of my crew is dying.”
Their gaze was locked in an intense battle of the wills. A page to her combadge interrupted their standoff.
“Bridge to the Captain.”
“Go ahead, Ensign.”
“The magistrate has informed us that the council has approved your request to perform the ritual. You are expected on the surface at sunset.”
“Thank you. Please inform the Doctor that I will require his expertise.”
“Aye, Captain.”
“Janeway out.”
Chakotay could not hide the trepidation that sunk like a rock in the pit of his stomach. Kathryn looked horrible, and he had a feeling she was only going to get worse.
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_
“Everything seems to be working. The subdermal bioprobe will transmit any changes in your biochemistry. It also acts as a homing beacon, if you are in need of assistance, simply treat it as a combadge and you will be beamed out.”
Kathryn could only nod her head in assent, fatigue had seeped into her bones. She did her best to mask her discomfort, not about to give Chakotay any reason to keep her in sickbay. Although, she’d give anything to have the room stop spinning.
“Thank you. Here’s hoping that I uncover some answers,” she stood slowly from the biobed and cleared her throat.
“One to beam to the surface.”
And with that, she disappeared.
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_
“Her respiration and pulse have remained steady. But, there’s been a gradual buildup of lactic acid in her extensor muscles over the last hour. And here,” he paused, examining the readout, “something else that the sensors haven’t quite deciphered yet.”
Chakotay followed closely as the EMH adjusted the settings and sensitivity of the probe. The Doctor’s slowly widening eyes elevated his blood pressure.
“What does that mean? Is she in danger?”
“N-not at all. She’s probably experiencing some light strain. What you’d expect in an endurance ritual. The troubling discovery here are the clearly elevated levels of hCG present in the captain’s body. How could I have missed this?”
“Is that something that would suggest a treatment for Kes?”
Chakotay, again, trailed in the Doctor’s wake as he shakily sat down behind his desk shaking his head; suddenly engrossed in his computer screen.
“Not…exactly.”
The intimidating look that Chakotay pinned the hologram with could have vaporized a Klingon warrior in an instant.
“I don’t suppose you’d settle for: ‘Doctor/Patient confidentiality’?”
The Commander’s continued silence answered the question for him.
“Alright. Well, if you must know. It appears that the captain is pregnant. According to these readings, conception took place approximately...eight and a half weeks ago.”
Both men froze as their minds raced back in time; Chakotay numbly braced himself on the edge of the desk.
“New Earth,” the commander’s whisper confirmed the Doctor’s speculations.
“Yes. Of course. When the Captain returns, I’d better check on the rest of your inoculations. The both of you. Who knows what else that virus rendered inactive. I believe ‘congratulations’ are in order then, Commander,” he attempted a small smile to assuage some of the obvious terror radiating from his commanding officer.
“Are the stresses she’s experiencing going to put her or the pregnancy at risk?”
The Doctor paused, formulating the correct phrasing to approach him with.
“Would I have allowed her to go down to the planet had I been aware she was pregnant? Probably not. Could I have stopped her? Most certainly not. Will she be in danger? Only time can tell. All we can do is wait and hope that she uncovers something to help Kes. I would hate for all of this to be for naught,” Chakotay sank down to sit on the edge of the desk. The Doctor’s words fading in and out of focus.
Pregnant. In about seven months, they would have a baby. If she came back from this. If nothing happened after that. What about when the baby was born? What if there were an attack? A kidnapping?
Suddenly, the image of an alien race holding the captain’s child for ransom sprung into his mind. He already worried enough about Kathryn. He didn’t think his heart could take it. The Delta Quadrant was a horrible place. Who was he to bring a child into this hostile environment?
A flashing tricorder brought Chakotay back to the present. The EMH was practically shouting in his face.
“Commander! There you are! I was sure that I had lost you,” he continued to run the sensor over his body, “Get some rest. Breathe a little deeper. And just take things one step at a time. I will keep you privy to the Captain’s condition.”
Chakotay shot the Doctor a withering glance and the hologram raised his hands in apology.
“I am relieving you of duty. I will page you, should anything change,” the Commander sighed and mumbled something as he passed the EMH and headed through the doors.
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*
“Commander Chakotay, you are needed in sickbay.”
Tuvok’s voice over the combadge snapped him out of his sleep. Still on his couch, report in hand, Chakotay cleared his throat and tapped at his chest.
“On my way. Chakotay out.”
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_
He paced back and forth, his rage barely containable. The Doctor knew for certain the reason for his behavior, all the while Tuvok raised an inquisitive eyebrow at his First Officer’s unprofessional behavior.
“It’s been three days since she had any sleep! How long are we going to let her go through this?”
Chakotay turned to the Vulcan, intense eyes demanding an answer. Not receiving one, the Doctor reluctantly cut in.
“I understand your concern, Commander. But the fact is that her vital signs are stable. She seems to be in no immediate danger,” the EMH shrunk back into his seat as Chakotay leaned over the console, face set in a deadly glare.
“She’s been poisoned with some unknown toxin. It may be having an effect that we can’t gauge. It could lie dormant for a few days and then suddenly fluctuate and kill her in minutes,” Tuvok took an immediate step back as Chakotay hurled the padd that he had been holding across the room.
“It is possible that some of the Commander’s concern may be justified. Is there anything which might be preventing her from using the homing signal in her implant?”
The security officer did his best to renationalize the extreme emotions that were radiating from his distressed colleague.
“Not that I am aware of. She’s fully conscious. If she wanted to transport, she could signal us. I am not about to pull the Captain out unless I am absolutely sure that she is in danger. I am getting some remarkable data. This amino acid is occurring due to the breakdown of the toxin in her bloodstream. I believe this is it. What we’ve been searching for,” the Doctor spoke mostly to Tuvok, finding it difficult to concentrate under Chakotay’s intense glare.
“So, does this mean that you can form a cure for Kes from this data alone,” the Commander stepped closer into the hologram’s space.
“I strongly suspect that this biochemical change is going to give us the answers we need,” a tense pause fell over the men. Tuvok examined the situation and then broke the silence.
“Commander, it is ultimately your decision. However, I believe it would be the Captain’s desire to complete the ritual.”
Chakotay shook his head and grumbled.
“Alright. We’ll leave her there for now. But I’m not moving from this monitor until she gets back.”
With a nod of assent, Tuvok exited the room. Stern eyes turned on the EMH.
“Will the toxin kill the fetus,” exhaustion and a hint of sadness creeped into Chakotay’s voice.
Both men stared blankly at the readouts on the screen.
“As of now, I cannot provide you with an answer. But, I assure you. She is in no distress; and I will do a full and complete workup when she returns to the ship.”
The Doctor turned to see a figure quickly moving out the door.
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_
Chakotay sprinted down the corridor as he slid to a stop in front of the sickbay doors. They opened, only to reveal Kathryn clutching a basin, moaning through a horrible episode of dry heaves.
“Damn it, Kathryn!”
He rushed to her side as the EMH appeared with a series of hyposprays. After what seemed to be hours, Kathryn weakly brought her face up to meet her Commander’s.
“Hey there. The Doctor informed me that I’m going to need some extra space in my quarters soon,” the attempt at humor was thinly veiled as her smirk quickly morphed into trembling sorrow.
Chakotay took the basin from her and gathered her shaking body into his arms. He whispered comforts to her and gently rocked back and forth as she sobbed into his chest. The Doctor finished his tests and silently affirmed that everything was alright.
He slowly brought his lips to her forehead, resting them there, waiting for her breathing to return to normal.
“When will he begin treating Kes,” she rested heavily against him as her words slurred together.
“Almost immediately. The toxin was the key. You made it through for her. Kes will be alright. And…our baby will be alright.”
He felt her stiffen slightly with his last assuring statement. Fatigue winning out, she relaxed into him once more.
“You need food, water, and rest. I’m going to take you to my quarters to watch over you tonight, and I won’t take ‘no’ for an answer,” she sighed and wrapped her arms around his neck.
“You’ll get no argument from me,” her voice muffled by the material of his uniform, “I just want my stomach to stop churning.”
“I can give you something to relieve the nausea. It won’t rid you entirely of it, although it will make life more bearable. A diet change would be wise, but we will save that discussion for your follow up appointment,” the Doctor pressed one final hypospray to her neck before returning to his office.
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*
Chakotay had almost succeeded in coaxing Kathryn to bed when her combadge called her to sickbay. As luck would have it, Tuvok paged him to the Bridge, before he could follow her down the corridor.
Sensors were detecting a fluctuation in the energy signature that they had studied from the altar down on the planet. Damn. What did it all mean? Why couldn’t anything be simple here in the Delta Quadrant?
He had asked that question once at a senior staff meeting. Kathryn’s dancing eyes had met his and she sprung from her seat, clasping him on the shoulder.
“Now, where would the fun be in that,” her singsong reply brought laughter to the whole table.
His reverie was interrupted by the lack of Kathryn Janeway as he entered sickbay.
“Where is she and why hasn’t Kes’ condition changed?”
The EMH swiftly moved back and forth around the biobed. Doing his best not to be disrupted by the irritated man that had just entered the room.
“The treatment is not having the desired effect. I’m not quite sure where the Captain has gone, I have been working on altering the toxin and attempting a second procedure.”
Chakotay had strode out the door before the Doctor could finish his report.
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_
He had been on nearly every deck. The mess hall, back to the Bridge, back to their quarters; she was nowhere to be found.
“Janeway to Chakotay.”
“Captain we’ve been worried about you.”
“I’m all right. I want you to beam Kes down here to the sanctuary.”
“Kathryn, what are you doing?”
“Chakotay, please. Just do it. That’s an order.”
“Acknowledged. I’ll bring her down myself. Chakotay to Sickbay. Doctor, prepare Kes for transport.”
“Understood.”
An unshakable feeling of uneasiness settled over Chakotay. Whatever happened, he just prayed to the Spirits to protect them all.
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*
“The Doctor says that her life signs are deteriorating, he almost wouldn’t let us out of Sickbay. Kathryn, what are you going to do?”
She wouldn’t look him in the eye. The uneasiness intensified.
“Kath-, “she held up a hand to stop him.
“I’m taking her back into the biogenic field,” Chakotay’s heart sank.
“Why,” Neelix pled.
“I believe it will save her life,” all of Kathryn’s focus remained on Kes.
“Kathryn…you’ve been through a lit in the past few days--,” he wished she would just look him in the eyes.
“I know what I’m doing.”
“Are you sure of that? There are 800 megajoules of energy running through that field. There’s no telling what would happen if you went through it. Take some time to think about this and we’ll run a few more scans,” with that she looked right at him.
“No.”
She pushed past him to get to Kes. All he could do was stand by and watch as the mother of his child carried Kes’ lifeless body up to the shrine.
Sending up silent prayers of protection, he held his breath as a surge of energy burst around the two women. His body was ready to sprint at a moment’s notice, when he heard Kathryn calling to Kes.
Neelix and Chakotay both let out a sigh of relief as Kes’ small reply floated across the cave. Chakotay met them at the bottom of the steps and carried Kes the rest of the way to the bed.
“Chakotay to the Doctor, beam up Kes and Neelix.”
“Yes, Commander.”
Chakotay waited for the transport to complete before turning back to Kathryn, who looked ready to collapse at any second. He caught her just as she went down and pulled her up against his chest. Her breathing was slow and even, no immediate concern there.
“Chakotay to Voyager. Two to beam directly to the Captain’s quarters.”
“Aye, sir.”
*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_
She stirred as they approached her bed. He laid her down and sat next to her hip. Weary eyes followed his movements as he slipped the sandals from her feet.
“What—I, never mind. I’m far too tired to have this conversation tonight,” he sighed and hung his head in defeat. He turned to see tears rolling down Kathryn’s pale face.
“I can’t do this, Chakotay. I’m not ready for this. How do I even--? What if something were to--,” he silenced her with a chaste kiss to the lips.
Standing and removing his boots, he climbed into the bed beside her. She instantly molded to his side and he cradled her there.
“I had all of the same doubts and fears. Someone told me to ‘get some rest, breathe a little deeper, and take things one step at a time’. I found it to be sound advice. I say we take it and discuss things when you’re feeling better,” she sighed at the feeling of a tender kiss being dropped on the top of her head.
“Chakotay?”
“Hmmm?”
“I-I love you.”
He smiled and squeezed her a bit tighter.
“I love you too. Always.”

B'Elanna is going to work in a very good mood, so cheery it's borderline creepy. She has a sudden shift to crankiness when she sees Seven and Icheb working on the mezzanine without her authorization, but before she can read them the riot act, she feels lightheaded and begins to collapse. Icheb scans her and detects a foreign lifesign in her and worries she has a parasite, but Seven is a little wiser than that and calls the Doctor to expect a pregnant patient.
The Doctor gives her a clean bill of health, citing her fainting spell as just a clash of human and Klingon metabolisms, but he doesn't expect any major issues. B'Elanna doesn't want to know the sex of the baby yet, and she wants to keep the news between just her and Tom for now, but unfortunately, Icheb and Seven did not get that memo, and before they know it, they're each being congratulated by virtually every member of the crew.
He shows them a holographic projection of their child's spine ten months after birth, and there is pronounced curvature. B'Elanna notes that she had the same thing as a baby and had corrective surgery, as did her mother, so she's not too concerned with it. The Doctor accidentally lets the cat out of the bag on sex when he says that it runs in Klingon families, especially females. He attempts to backpedal but they say it's okay. Treatment has advanced since B'Elanna was born and surgery won't be necessary anymore as he can treat the imperfection genetically. Since he's analyzed the baby's genome, they ask him to show them a holographic recreation of the whole baby. Tom thinks the baby is beautiful and looks "just like her mother," but B'Elanna sees the ridges with consternation and begins having flashbacks.
When she was about twelve, her human father took her on a camping trip with her cousins and uncle. One of the cousins, a little shit, dropped a live worm on B'Elanna's sandwich since he heard Klingons prefer live food. This caused B'Elanna to get upset and run off until dark. When she returned, her dad took her aside and told her to not be so sensitive about her shitty racist cousins or the shitty racist kids at school and tried to relate it to when he was a kid and kids called him Snorres because he'd sleep in class. That's totally the same thing. Later that night, she overheard her dad and uncle talking where he confessed that he's having problems dealing with a household with two Klingons, and how he ignored his mother's advice not to marry a Klingon and appeared to now regret it.
After the genetic treatment is performed, B'Elanna goes to the holodeck and runs simulations on what her daughter will look like if she starts removing Klingon genes, and continues until the projected 12-year-old image of her daughter no longer has ridges. She proposes making these changes to the Doctor, but he isn't willing to just hack up her child's DNA willy-nilly. He tells her to discuss it with Tom while he agrees to at least look over B'Elanna's findings. Tom is totally opposed to this course of treatment, and the conversation leads to one where B'Elanna essentially tells Tom to check his human privilege because he doesn't know what it's like growing up when everyone is one way and you're another. She has struggled with her mixed heritage her whole life and doesn't want her daughter to go through the same thing she did.
They can't come to an agreement, and after B'Elanna unsuccessfully tries to get Janeway involved to override the Doctor's objections and has a further argument with Tom in the hallway, she locks him out of their quarters, so he spends the night at Harry's. The next morning, she's walking to the mess hall with Chakotay when Tom comes along, and Chakotay conveniently remembers that he's forgotten something, leaving the two alone to reconcile. They're soon called to sickbay, where the Doctor has revealed that after reviewing B'Elanna's findings, he thinks the alterations are now necessary as they point to metabolic incapatabilities between the human and Klingon genes. He says the sooner they treat, the better, and has scheduled the procedure for the morning.
Something doesn't sit right about the Doctor's sudden change of heart, and Tom takes his findings to Seven and Icheb to review. Icheb finds immediate problems with the Doctor's analysis, and he's not one to usually make mistakes. Seven realizes B'Elanna has tampered with his program, and Tom tries to hail her but gets no response. She's in Sickbay, where she's opted not to wait until morning to undergo the procedure. She's locked out the room and it takes Tuvok's security team to force the door open. After they tell the Doctor that his program has been altered, he agrees to deactivate himself until they can sort it out.
Tom has everyone else clear out of sickbay so he can talk things out with his wife. She relates the story of her camping trip with her father, and how after overhearing his complaints about how hard it is to live with Klingons, she stormed out of her tent and told him he should just leave. Two weeks later, he left. Tom realizes she fears he'll walk out on her too, and promises he'd never do that and he hopes to have many Klingon babies in their future. The Doctor's program is restored, and B'Elanna apologizes for altering it and asks the Doctor to be the child's godfather. The baby starts to kick, and she asks to see the projection one more time. "She is cute, isn't she?"
NITPICKS
At 8 years old, Alexander Rozhekno was already matured to the equivalent of a human teenager despite being a human/Klingon hybrid. Here is B'Elanna at 12, and she's only just as matured as a fully human 12-year-old. It could be that Klingon males and females develop at different rates, or an unusual interaction between the two genomes that express differently per sex.
When did Harry switch from clarinet to saxophone? I know they are played similarly, but this is the first time we've seen him play the sax.
FAVORITE QUOTES
Icheb: I'm detecting another lifesign. Seven: Where? Icheb: Inside Lieutenant Torres. It could be a parasite. [Seven checks his tricorder readings.] Seven: Seven of Nine to the Doctor. Doctor: Go ahead. Seven: I'll be accompanying Lieutenant Torres to Sickbay. Doctor: What's wrong? Seven: I believe she's pregnant.
Chakotay: Have you checked the warp core for radiation leaks today? Torres: No. Why? Chakotay: You have a certain glow about you.
Kim: It's all over now. No more late nights on the holodeck. No more racing the Delta Flyer. Paris: Don't you think you're exaggerating just a little? Kim: I've seen it happen. The new dad gets tied down with family. Old friends drop away. Paris: It's fatherhood , Harry, not exile. Kim: If you say so.
Tuvok: Offspring can be disturbingly illogical, yet profoundly fulfilling. You should anticipate paradox.
Paris: Maybe a change of scenery would help. How about the holodeck? Torres: That's your solution to everything.
Kim: Maybe you should tell her you understand. Paris: What good would that do? Kim: It might make her less defensive, and then maybe it would be easier for her to see your point of view. Paris: What if she can't? Kim: Like I said, my couch is your couch.

750. [VOY] Friendship One
SCORE:
Tumblr media
(3/5 stars)
With the real-time link between Voyager and Earth properly established, the ship receives its first official assignment from Starfleet in the Delta Quadrant. Friendship One, a warp-capable probe sent out from Earth in 2067 to seek out other species and give them the means to go to the stars and find humanity, has been calculated to have ended up pretty close to Voyager. Their mission is to retrieve it as a piece of Earth history and see if it ever wound up in another species' hands.
After Harry performs some updates to Starfleet's search grid based on anomalies they wouldn't know to account for, they're able to quickly locate the probe's hull signature and head to the planet. They find an irradiated wasteland with no lifesigns, and an away mission with the Delta Flyer is to go down and retrieve it. The away team consists of Kim, Paris, Neelix, Chakotay, and Lieutenant Joe "You Haven't Seen Me Since Season 1 So I'm Probably Here To Die" Carey. (B'Elanna wanted to go on the mission but Tom talked her out of breathing in a toxic atmosphere while preggo.) They find evidence of a ruined civilization on the surface but still no life signs, an apparent nuclear winter befalling the planet. They also find evidence that Friendship One influenced the culture, because they find a music box that plays Vivaldi's Four Seasons.
The man who attacked Chakotay and Harry wakes up in sickbay and is a scientist named Otrin who explains that Friendship One gave them knowledge of antimatter technology, which they were woefully under-equipped to properly manage and caused massive destruction across the planet. He believes it was a tactic by Earth to wipe out their population and leave the planet for humans to conquer. Janeway hopes to change his mind about them, and the Doctor begins treating his radiation poisoning. Seven extracts some nanoprobes from her bloodstream to help repair damage to his internal organs. In a conversation, she points out that Verin is a close-minded leader and is not acting in their best interests, and while Otrin doesn't consider himself a leader, she thinks scientists should be the leaders.
The nearest habitable world is over a hundred light years away and they calculate it would take 3 years to evacuate everyone, so Janeway wants to consider other options, but she lists using violence to get her crew back as an absolute last resort, as she doesn't want to reinforce their views about humans. Since they're not going to be able to start the evacuation in the 3-hour window Verin gave them, she offers a show of good faith by offering to send food and medicine in exchange for one hostage. Verin agrees and has Carey set up the transport enhancers, only to shoot him dead right as he's being beamed away. Nice one, writers. He made it seven years only to go out like that.
Tom and Neelix have been spending time getting to know their captors and ingratiating themselves to them. They give the music box they found to a little girl. A pregnant woman begins early labor and the baby is born not breathing, and Tom is able to save the child using medical supplies he brought along. Tuvok and the Doctor show up to rescue Tom and Neelix, phaser-stunning all the armed guards, and Tom convinces the new mother to let him take the baby for further treatment. The Doctor is able to bring the baby to full health and they beam the child back along with more food and medical supplies.
Otrin comes up with a potential way to rid the atmosphere of radiation, and they're able to come up with a delivery system using modified photon torpedoes fired from inside the atmosphere. It will put Voyager at risk from the shockwaves but Janeway is willing to do it to help undo the damage her ancestors unwittingly caused. They begin the procedure while Otrin returns to his people. When the shockwaves begin, Verin believes they are being attacked and begins to activate antimatter missiles from a silo, which Voyager will be unable to defend against while performing the procedure. But thanks to Otrin and the others who saw the compassion of the humans, they are able to stop Verin and enact some new leadership. Just then, the little girl with the music box tells them all to go outside, where they can see the atmosphere clearing up.
Voyager has retrieved the pieces of Friendship One and resumed course for home, one crewmember short. Janeway and Chakotay muse over the naiveté of their ancestors, and how exploration cannot justify the loss of life.
NITPICKS
The Friendship One has the Starfleet chevron as a decal but it launched in the 21st century, at least a century before that became the insignia of Starfleet.
There's no such thing as "antimatter radiation." Annihilation of matter and antimatter puts off gamma radiation. If they had antimatter of a radioactive element (antitritium would be the most likely) it would still put off the same kinds of radiation as the regular matter counterpart.
FAVORITE QUOTES
Neelix: I had a cousin who used to transport disulfides from a gas giant. He claimed to love the turbulence. Of course, disulfides are known to cause delusions.
Carey: When my wife was pregnant, she didn't want to be coddled, either. Paris: And she's not half Klingon. Maybe it's us. Something about fatherhood seems to regress the male psyche a few thousand years.
Janeway: Do you really believe we'd contaminate a world we intended to conquer? Otrin: I'm a scientist. I believe what I see. And today I saw your people standing on our soil just as you promised, and they were wearing equipment that protected them from the radiation because they knew exactly what to expect. If you were in my position, what would you believe?
