Establishment of free Palestinian state to bring peace, Erdogan says
The path to peace, tranquility and economic development in the Middle East region lies through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.
Speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai, the Turkish leader said:
“All steps to resolve [Israel-Hamas war] will remain incomplete until an independent, sovereign and geographically integrated Palestinian state is established on the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
Then, Erdogan emphasised that Israel puts itself above international law and has been pursuing a “policy of occupation, usurpation, destruction and massacre” for decades. He added:
“If Israel wants permanent peace, it must abandon its expansionist ideas, and recognise the existence of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.”
The Turkish president also pledged that Turkey will continue to support the Palestinians in their struggle for their rights.

Banner in solidarity with Kurdish guerrillas displayed during football match in Italy
A banner reading "Biji Guerila" (Long Live the Guerrilla) was displayed during a football match of Hic Sunt Leones team in Bologna.
The day chosen by the activists was not random as the liberation of the city from Nazism is celebrated on 21 April. The sports center is in fact named after Mauro Pizzoli, nom de guerre "Pzulein", a partisan barbarously killed by the Nazis on 29 October 1944 at the age of 20. The day was also characterized by the cowardly attack of Turkish fascist forces in the Metina region with air forces and artillery.
From the activists statement:
"Times change but ideals don't. Just as fascism doesn't change. They wear different names and clothes but retain the same ideas of murder and destruction as always. 'Biji Gerila' is, therefore, not just a banner but a message of full sharing and absolute closeness to the Kurdish partisans."

Interesting article, especially thinking back to how Turkish-U.S. relations have deteriorated over the last decade. What would a better Turkey look like, and how would one get there?

Turkey earthquake: Before and after pictures show extent of destruction
By The Visual Journalism Team, BBC News
9 February 2023
Tumblr media
Two huge earthquakes and a series of aftershocks have hit Turkey, Syria and the surrounding region, killing more than 11,000 people and causing widespread destruction.
The first earthquake, which struck in the early hours of February 6, was registered as 7.8, classified as "major" on the official magnitude scale.
Its epicentre was near Gaziantep - a city of more than two million people.
Tumblr media
The intensity of the tremors also brought down tower blocks and public buildings in northern Syria.
The quake was felt as far away as Cyprus and Lebanon, both about 250 miles (400km) from the epicentre.
In Turkey, more than 8,500 people are confirmed to have died, with tens of thousands injured and thousands of buildings destroyed.
Tumblr media
The first earthquake was followed by numerous aftershocks, including one quake which was almost as large as the first - registering as magnitude 7.5 - about nine hours later with its epicentre about 60 miles (100km) further north in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras province.
Tumblr media
On Tuesday, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a three month state of emergency in the south-east of the country, covering 10 cities affected.
Tumblr media
In the Mediterranean port city of Iskenderun, in the province of Hatay, about 75 miles (120km) from Gaziantep, buildings and docks were reduced to rubble.
Tumblr media
A fire at the port of Iskenderun has also hampered aid efforts with many containers destroyed and those stuck in the port blocking supplies being brought in.

The historic Yeni Camii mosque, in Malatya, more than 100 miles (160km) from the epicentre, was extensively damaged.
Its domes collapsed, leaving it exposed to the winter sky. The mosque was destroyed by a huge earthquake in 1894 and, after reconstruction, damaged by another quake in 1964.
Collapsing buildings killed more than 2,500 people across Syria.
In the city of Aleppo, the ancient citadel ravaged by a decade of war has been further damaged by the quake.
In the village of Besnaya-Bseineh, a large block of residential and commercial buildings was reduced to rubble.

Turkish president unveils election manifesto
Tumblr media
Ankara (The Times Groupe) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday released the AK Party’s presidential and parliamentary manifesto ahead of the May 14 elections.
The AK Party chairman, Erdogan, unveiled a 23-point election manifesto in Ankara, beginning with steps to heal the wounds of the victims of the Feb. 6 earthquakes in southern Turkey.
“Every attack, every disaster, every pain we experience, especially the earthquakes of Feb. 6, shows that we need to tighten our unity, protect our unity more, and strengthen our brotherhood even more,” Erdogan said.
Erdogan said Turkey, which lost more than 50,000 people in the earthquakes, would rebuild its cities across 11 provinces as soon as possible.
“We will completely heal the wounds caused by the disaster in 11 provinces and their neighboring cities by building a total of 650,000 new houses, 319,000 of which will be delivered in one year,” he added.
Pledging to raise Turkey in the upcoming period, the Turkish leader said: “Turkey has no choice but to be strong, stay strong, and increase its power in order not to fall back into the pit of political and economic bondage.”
In addition to economy, environment, family, justice, and freedom, the manifesto includes other areas as well.
Turning to the economy, Erdogan said Türkiye aims to bring inflation down to single digits, adding: “We will increase the welfare level of our employees, from civil servants to retirees and workers, by always increasing their wages above inflation.”
Turkey will continue with investment, production, and exports until reaching the goal of bringing its foreign trade volume to $1 trillion. TIMES OF OCEAN

Hard to tell how Turkey uses EU refugee funds – EU auditors
European Union auditors stated on Wednesday that they could not identify whether some of the billions of euros given to Turkey to address the Syrian refugee issue were actually having any impact, according to Kathimerini.
Under a 2016 agreement between EU leaders and Turkey, the bloc pledged to provide Turkey with at least 6 billion euros ($6.4 billion) to cope with migrants arriving from Syria. Turkey, in turn, pledged to prevent migrants from leaving its territory for Europe.
In March 2016, a month after the agreement came into force, the Turkish government reported that the number of migrants crossing illegally into Greece had fallen from about 6,000 per day in November 2015 to about 130 per day.
In 2021, leaders announced plans to send another 3 billion euros ($3.2 billion) for refugees in Turkey. The pact, which was seen in Europe as a great success, served as a model for other, more recent and more elaborate, agreements with Tunisia and Egypt.
However, the European Court of Auditors (ECA), after reviewing the money’s effectiveness, claimed last year that Turkey’s education ministry refused to provide information that could have allowed them to assess the impact of EU projects, ECA member Bettina Jakobsen claimed.
I’m quite sure that European citizens would like to see some results coming out of the various development and humanitarian projects that the EU is funding.
According to the European Commission, at least 530 million euros ($566 million) was earmarked to ‘”quality inclusive education of refugees in Turkey.” It was intended to pay teachers’ salaries and provide teaching equipment, Turkish language and teacher training, as well as counselling and other guidance.

Belgian police raid Kurdish television studios
Tonight at around 02:00 Belgian police broke into the studios of the Kurdish television stations Medya Haber and Sterk Tv in Denderleeuw. Without prior notice, hundreds of police stormed the studios of Sterk TV and Medya Haber, breaking down doors and ransacking the building. Sterk TV reported that cables were cut and equipment damaged, leading to a blockade of television broadcasting.
At a time when Turkey is launching military offensives in South Kurdistan, killing Kurdish civilians in Rojava with drones and announcing the invasion of Shengal, the actions of the Belgian state are complicit in these crimes.
Sterk TV spokesperson: "This attack is a part of the genocidal concept of the Turkish occupation" & "With this attack they want to silence the voice of the Kurdish people"
