"a beautiful conclusion" : Catching Up With Composer Timothy Fife
Back in 2016 I’d come across this 2-song 10 inch from a band called Victims. The EP was called Form Hell and it kind of blew my mind. I’d never heard something that captured the spirit and sonic depth of early 70s Tangerine Dream quite like that. It wasn’t that Victims emulated Froese, but interpreted the music and put it through their own beautiful and dark filter. Where Phaedra and Rubycon felt…

for your 100-500 word drabble prompt post! pairing: boyd/raylan/tim -- prompt: the monster under the bed.
Tooks, I adore your wacky-wavy-inflatable arm man of a mind, many a great idea comes out of it, but I had no clue -and still have no earthly clue- what in Sam Hill you really meant by 'the monster under the bed' so I just ran with a thread of thoughts I had while drivin a while ago.
-
"The Monster Under The Bed"
‘Why couldn’t they just go away?’ Tim thinks to himself, cold with sweat and slowly fading adrenaline. Another nightmare shook him awake, the one about the little kid in the light blue Thobe, herding a trip of goats into a shabby pen while his father stoked a fire for what Tim assumed was their dinner. Tim will never know because the second the little boy turned his back, Tim took his shot on the father.
Mark’s voice rings loud and clear in his dreams and lingers now. Range to target: one, niner, tree, fife. Wind: Moving from South to North, three-quarter value. On scope… Fire. Kinda fucked they didn’t tell us he had a kid, guess he’s gotta learn to feed himself and the fuckin’ goats now. They weren’t waiting for the boy to turn away, it just happened that that’s when the father presented the best target, a sick coincidence he guessed.
“Tim?” Boyd’s voice comes bleary through the fog of blowing desert sand and terrified bleats and screams for Allah to help, it doesn’t seem to reach the younger man. He glances at the clock to gauge why Tim may be up but it’s only 03:22, nowhere near 06:30.
“Timothy?” Boyd repeats himself with more concern coloring his voice, hand coming up out from under the covers to reach across their stirring lover to gently touch Tim’s shoulder, he meets damp, chilled flesh. Oh. Tim doesn’t flinch or startle, he just leans forward and subsequently away from Boyd's touch, letting his head drop in annoyance at himself.
“Yeah?” It comes out level and disinterested, not defensive but definitely not up for conversation. God, he wishes he could tell them what’s wrong. Lucky for Tim, Raylan decides it’s his turn to speak, albeit groggy and mumbled.
“There are poptarts in the pantry and new target papers in the garage, coffee’s set to go off at 5:45, leave some for me please,” Raylan grumbles, turning on his right side to loop his lanky arms around Tim’s waist for a quick hug, squeezing just hard enough to make the smaller man shift to stabilize himself. Forcing him to be conscious of his present location before letting him go. Raylan may not know exactly what’s going on in Tim’s head, but he’s been with him long enough to know what helps the younger man get back to himself in these times.
“Yeah.” Tim sighs. That’s all he says initially, pulling away and shoving the covers off himself, eyes still downcast. Tim is already fully dressed, crouched down and pulling out a rifle case from underneath his side of the bed before he addresses Boyd gruffly, “Vet shit, you know.” He doesn’t give Boyd the grace of eye contact.
Dismissive but not harsh, let him go.
Raylan tells him later that Tim just needs to let some things out in his own way, better not to get upset with his curt attitude, he doesn’t mean it the way most people would take it.
Tim stands and turns to leave after latching the case back shut, M1903 cradled securely in his left arm like a baby, a box of 30.06 clutched in his right hand. Neither Boyd nor Raylan hear the shots ring out, Tim always makes quick work of getting to His Spot on their property, way back in the woods. They won't talk about it, but it will linger in Boyd’s mind: Sitting, waiting, stored like the rifles under the bed.

This was a wreck but I hope you like it! Thank you for the prompt 💚

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
 Amos 6:1a, 4-7
We again hear from the Prophet Amos and his critique of the wealthy and those who are unaware of the needs of others.
 Psalm 146
The psalm speaks of those who are sustained by God.
A Letter to Timothy 6: 11-16
The letter calls for a life of faith and love.
 Luke 16: 19-31
The Gospel relates the familiar parable of a rich man and Lazarus.
This weekend, Jesus tells his audience of Pharisees a dramatic parable that contains striking contrasts.  Fine linen and lush purple garments are set in contrast to a garment of skin, covered by sores.   We hear of “sumptuously” dinning every day in contrast to a longing for “scraps that fall from a rich man’s table”.  The agility of the dogs found more to eat than the poor fellow and the they seemed more generous to him than the rich man.  Such contrasts!  Even the poor fellow’s name, Lazarus which means “God helps”, is set in contrast to his condition.  He alone is named except for the legendary leaders of the faith; Moses, Abraham and the prophets.
And perhaps the most striking contrast is where in the parable, each character finds himself in the afterlife.  The tables are turned according to the story.  But it is striking that the rich man shows some concern for his own brothers and wants Lazarus to be sent to warn them about their behavior.  He acts like Lazarus’ master in his requests.  He wants Lazarus to wait on him with a gift of water and to warn his family.  Even in the after fife the rich man tries to be in control.
What is Jesus hoping to teach his listeners and you and me this weekend?
Perhaps one lesson might be the reality that we may fail to notice what is right before us.  Individuals and situations that are horrific for someone.  We may miss it because of our own agenda.  Think of the bus load of immigrants taken so far from their destination with promises of help but found themselves isolated and alone except for the kindness of the folks at Martha’s Vineyard and other cities.   Other Governors send them to Washington and New York. Some immigrants because of their movement, lost their date in court for asylum that was scheduled.  The agenda of the powerful took over the hopes of the vulnerable.  This was a “Lazarus” moment.  Is this what Jesus is trying to say to the religious leaders in his audience? Remember one time he told them that they laid “heavy burdens on people’s backs but never lifted a finger to help them”. Is that one lesson for you and me? To get out of ourselves and be aware of those as close to us as Lazarus was to the rich man.  To be aware of the needs of others that we may often miss.
Was Jesus advising his audience then and now that while material goods like clothing, delicious foods, property and parties are good and enjoyable they are not what ultimately brings happiness.   The rich man seems to eventually understand this but it was too late.  The Prophet Amos from whom we have been hearing, is trying to say the same thing. “Woe to the complacent in Zion.  …they shall be the first to go into exile…”.
Was Jesus advising his listeners then and now to be aware of the present moment because it is really all we have?   The residents and churches in Martha’s Vineyard are other cities are offered a taunting task in the present moment but rise to the occasion as they reach out to the many folks dropped in their communities without really understanding why.
There will be times in our lives when we are in places of power and can make decisions about how we use it like the rich man in the Gospel or the Governors who traffic and move vulnerable folks out of their States.  There are also times, perhaps not as dramatic as Lazarus’ story or an immigrant from Venezuela, when our needs seem to be enormous and we long for someone to notice them and come to our assistance.  At times we are Lazarus in need of healing and notice.
Where do you find yourself in this challenging parable?

Repeated Viewing and Timothy Fife Explore Paranormal Sounds of the Synthesizer - it’s a good season for hauntology, too (Burning Witches)
Do you believe in ghosts? Those things that cannot be explained which lurk where we fear to tread once that last light goes dark? Paranormal Sounds of the Synthesizer, was written and conceived as a library record for just that. Electronic music composers Repeated Viewing and Timothy Fife have created a record to take you into the world of the paranormal, the unexplained, and what happens when the light goes out. Paranormal Sounds of the Synthesizer is a “split” LP. Repeated Viewing covers side A, while Timothy Fife handles side B. Repeated Viewing’s mood is of dread and darkness. They build a musical world of haunted parlors, candles flickering, and incantations spoken in whispered tongues. Timothy Fife, by contrast, takes us into the world which lies between here and there. Electrical pulses and droning currents make contact with the other side, giving static charge and access to afterlife conversations with those long from this earth.

Dream Division Returns With Cosmic New Album 'Lumarian', Out 8/4 ; Listen To "Odyssey ft Jorja Chalmers"
Tom McDowell has kept himself pretty busy since the summer of 2020 with the launch of his label Library of the Occult. The first release for his synth-heavy record label was his own Dream Division’s The Devil Rides Out, a musical interpretation of Dennis Wheatley’s occult classic novel. That album opened the door to three years of classic releases from artists as diverse as Timothy Fife, Ogre,…
