Pressing a hand to her forehead (Y/n) glanced her eyes to her right watching Ben as he slammed his hand into the button resting on the wall so harshly she thought it would surely bust. That had been the third elevator that they had tried, pushing the button to see that it was either crowded with people or the same elevator come down with about two people in that wouldn't move. There were six elevators and none of them were empty or on the ground floor, and there were no stairs anywhere. Although stairs wouldn't be an option with a pushchair and two suitcases plus bags to try and get to the tenth floor of the badly designed hotel.

The five of them had gotten off a ten-hour flight, waited over half an hour to get a cab and then had to wait for another half an hour to get checked in here. It was ten o'clock at night and all their girls were beyond tired now and they couldn't even get in the elevator to get to their room. What a start this was to their holiday.

Ben had been working on two projects at the same time over the past year and then May had been born meaning they were all under strain and didn't seem to get five minutes of peace without something happening. So (Y/n) and Ben decided a breakaway was more than necessary, although it wasn't getting off to the best start. Going on a ten-hour flight with a six-year-old, a two-year-old and a four-month-old newborn wasn't the easiest thing in the world and with a certain stranger getting on Ben's last nerves they had practically run off the plane in relief.

All that they wanted was to go to bed.

Ben could never sleep on planes meaning he had been awake now for over twenty-four hours, having driven them down to the airport early in the morning. Then trying to get their bags checked in, go through security with two kids under five and one with severe anxiety had been pushing both parents to their limits. May was finally sleeping calmly against Ben's shoulder, Lola was asleep in the pushchair and Lily had taken to sitting on the floor due to exhaustion. (Y/n) was leaning heavily on the pushchair, her back seizing up especially from the plane ride here. They needed to sleep.

"I swear if the next one isn't empty..." Ben muttered underneath his breath as he scanned his eyes around, trying to work out which one would be opening next. If they didn't get there quick enough it would go without them and they needed to get two large cases, a pram and all of them in it quickly.

"Ben." Pointing quickly (Y/n) nodded to the last elevator at the end of the corridor they were standing in. Her hand latching onto the dark navy blue case next to her and the pushchair, making sure Ben had the other suitcase and Lily.

"Baby come on quick." Ben pleaded, nudging Lily to walk in front of him so he didn't lose her or leave her behind. Knowing if that happened Lily would scream the place down due to her anxiety that she got from Ben. She was nervous as it was being in an unknown place and with both parents getting agitated. If she was separated she would be pushed over the edge very quickly.

Reaching the elevator (Y/n) ground her jaw at seeing there were about three people already inside, there was no way they could all get in there.

"Get in and take the cases." He ordered, seeing the panic on his wife's face not wanting to go without him and split the kids up but there didn't seem to be much of a choice here. "Babe get in with Lola, I got Lily and May we'll catch the next one just get the stuff while there's space." Kissing her forehead Ben gave her a gentle push to get in, a thankful look on his face when the man in the elevator held his arm out to stop the doors closing. Roughly shoving the other suitcase in the elevator he nodded, moving his arm out to  Lily so she stayed with him.

"Ben the keys." Stuffing his hand into his pocket Ben tried to grab one of the key cards for the room, his foot reaching out and kicking the elevator when the doors shut in his face.

"Fuck! Lily push the button, we'll meet them up there." Running a hand through his hair Ben felt the need to cry. Now (Y/n) was going to have to somehow get out of the elevator with a pushchair and two suitcases and then wait outside the door for them to arrive with the key.

Tapping his foot violently against the floor Ben leaned his head on May's that was resting on his shoulder. His free hand now entwined with Lily's as she sat down next to his leg, too tired to stand up any longer than this. Ben knew next time they went anywhere on holiday they were going to have to plan it better than this. Catching a taxi that would take the cases, pushchair and all five of them was very hard, and ushering them all inside with all their stuff was hard.

"In, in move!" Ben rushed, his hand resting to Lily's back and pushing her into the next elevator when it opened. His head leaning back against the wall as he pushed the button for the tenth floor, feeling Lily pushing herself between his legs to keep away from the other three people already crammed in with their bags. His mind was running wild, praying (Y/n) had some help getting out the elevator. He felt bad leaving her but he wouldn't have been able to hold May, take the case and make sure Lily was alright too.

When the elevator opened on their floor Ben gently ushered Lily out, moving his hand so it was holding the back of May's head as she wriggled against him. 

"Daddy?" Looking down Ben followed Lily's line of sight, seeing their other suitcase resting next to the window near the elevator (Y/n) was in. She couldn't have taken all of them to the room. Walking over to the white case with the eiffel tower painted onto it Ben grabbed the handle before turning around and nodding for them to start walking. Saying nothing when Lily wrapped an arm around his leg as he walked so she didn't somehow lose him, pointing to the right corridor for their room.

"You alright?" Ben questioned when they reached the room where (Y/n) was. Seeing his wife sat down on the floor beside the pushchair, the navy blue bag placed next to her as she was relieved he saw the other bag she couldn't manage.

Managing to nod her head (Y/n) leaned her head on the pram, tears in her eyes from the crippling pain in her back that had started whilst she was pregnant with May and now continued. Becoming worse from being cramped on the plane and dragging the luggage and pushchair everywhere.

Opening the door Ben ushered Lily inside, turning on the light as he dumped the bag down. Carefully setting May down in the middle of the double bed pressed up against the wall before heading back outside, grabbing the other bag and wheeling it inside with a look of anger and sheer annoyance on his face. Hearing the door shut behind him as (Y/n) headed in with Lola.

Bypassing Ben when he sat down on the carpet in front of one of the suitcases (Y/n) gently picked May up from the bed before walking over to the cot placed near to the window and settling the newborn down to sleep. Wondering how long she would actually sleep for since the time zone had shifted and her sleep pattern had become disrupted.

"You go and get changed ready for bed for me, here's your toothbrush and pj's." Ben whispered, handing the items out to Lily who nodded, tiredly making her way to the bathroom, drooping over like she was about to fall asleep at any moment.

Seeing that Lola was fine for the moment sleeping in her pushchair with her rabbit toy squashed in her arms Ben pushed himself onto shaking legs that were close to giving out from lack of energy. His arms winding around (Y/n)'s middle, gently pulling her back with him until he was sitting on the edge of the bed and she was sat on his knees. His chin resting on her shoulder as he pressed his lips to her neck as she leaned back into him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Groggily opening his eyes Ben let out a sigh of frustration and exhaustion, his eyes burning from the desire to be closed and allow his mind to shut down again. Lifting his head from the pillow it was buried in Ben craned his neck to look to his right since he was laid on his stomach, seeing it was rather light meaning it wasn't late at night or early in the morning. Grabbing his phone he glanced to the time, eyes widening at seeing it was just before eleven.

His hand clenched at his side as he desired to reach out and slam his fist to the wall the headboard was resting against to tell the people in the next room to shut up. They were either shouting, storming about or making a clattering noise that kept waking Ben up when he was just getting to sleep. He'd already hit the wall twice when it woke Lily up and then May but with them sleeping he didn't want to wake them, knowing to sleep through today would be best.

Pushing himself up so he was sitting Ben leaned over and gently pulled Lily to the middle of the bed so she wasn't hanging near the edge of the bed like she was. Reaching over her side of the bed and grabbing the pillow from the floor, resting it in front of her so she wasn't liable to move much further to the edge of the bed they were sharing. Since there were only two double beds in the room Ben took the one near the window to be next to May when she woke during the night and Lily stayed in that bed with him. Lola was on the other double bed with (Y/n) so that Lily didn't lash out and whack her mum in her sleep since (Y/n) had a bad back and trouble sleeping due to it.

Knowing he wasn't getting back to sleep now Ben slowly got to his feet, rubbing at his eyes before moving to lean over the crib noticing May was beginning to wake as well.

Walking over to the air con machine resting under the window Ben turned it up so that the air would be bitter cold. Noticing how (Y/n) had discarded her covers altogether and thrown them onto the floor whereas he and Lily simply laid on top of them instead. His shirt was soaked with sweat and his body was burning, he knew he needed a shower soon, having not had one since they were at home. Heading to the bag resting on the table Ben grabbed a clean bottle and the milk powder, switching the kettle on as he started making the bottle that he knew May would need soon since it had been a few hours since he last fed her. They had all said last night that today would be spent in the room and mainly in bed so they could recover from jet lag, and then they would venture out and do something tomorrow.

Half filling the bottle with warm water Ben headed to the bathroom to add cold water so it wasn't scolding, making his way back to the crib and scooping May up into his arms. Glancing to the other bed Ben decided to go and sit with (Y/n) and Lola, save getting hit by Lily if she flung her arms out or tossed around like usual. Sitting down behind (Y/n) he leaned up against the headboard and mountain of pillows his wife loved to sleep with. Resting May in the crook of his arm he made sure she was settled before holding the bottle to her lips.

"What time is it?" (Y/n) mumbled quietly, turning over so she was facing him throwing her arm over his torso as she buried her head in his side.

"Eleven." A hum of recognition vibrated against Ben's side as (Y/n) made no attempt to move, knowing they had all day to lounge about and she was too tired to even think of getting up.

Adjusting May in his arm Ben sat her up a little more to make it easier, pulling the bottle away for a moment when she pushed his hand away as if she'd had enough. His eyes rolling playfully when she reached back out for the bottle, his hand patting her leg as he moved the bottle back to her.

"Do you want this or not?" He mumbled when May stopped drinking but held his hand that was keeping the bottle in place making him confused. "Alright, me and the little lady are getting a shower cause I'm sweating. You go back to sleep." Setting the bottle on the side table for May to finish later Ben got to his feet, leaning down to press a kiss to (Y/n)'s lips before walking over to the chair. Holding May to his shoulder so he could pat her back before grabbing the pink onesie and his boxer briefs he set out for today, not bothering to wear anything else until he cooled down.

Making his way into the bathroom Ben shut the door and leaned to turn on the shower, making sure the water was only just lukewarm, not wanting to get May too cold but not wanting to be under hot water either.

Settling May on the counter next to the sink Ben smiled down at her, tickling her stomach as he took off her light blue onesie and discarded her nappy in the bin beneath the sink. He pressed butterfly kisses to her stomach, laughing at the giggle it caused to erupt from her lips before he pulled back to discard his sweat ridden clothes. Sighing at the small breeze filtering through the room that cooled his skin that was burning to the touch.

"Okay, come on then little lady I think we both need a wash."

A gurgle left her lips as her hand swatted at Ben's collar bone in surprise when the cool water hit her back as Ben adjusted it so the water wouldn't hit her head which was near his own. Her forehead pressing to his cheek as his hand held the back of her head to keep her steady.

Leaning his head forward Ben let the droplets of water mingle in with his hair and flatten it to his head. The temperature soothing his aching muscles that were no better from sleeping when Lily tossed and turned, her feet colliding with his chest on many occasions. Ben shook his head when he leaned back up again, moving May so some of the water went on her head as he gently bounced her up and down. Smiling when she rested her head in the crook of his neck when he turned around to let the water cascade down his back.

Closing his eyes Ben began humming a random tune as he reached out and got some soap in his free hand, lightly rubbing it into May's skin to create bubbles. Watching as she reached out and brushed her hand against a few bubbles that were on Ben's chest, her head staying in the crook of his neck as he sensed she was growing tired.

He wasn't sure how long they stayed under the water for, just knowing that it felt nice to not be sweltering in the heat and to have five minutes alone with one of his girls.

Deciding it was about time to get out Ben turned the tap off before exiting the shower, grabbing one of the small towels that was folded up on the counter so he could wrap May up in it. Setting her on the counter quickly so he could wrap a towel around his hips before setting to drying May. The task was much easier than it normally was since she was rather tired still, not even fussing when he changed her into the clean onesie. Staying put when he quickly dried himself down and pulled on his boxers.

"Let's get you to bed little lady." Picking her back up he held her a little lower so she was resting against his chest and not his shoulder. Her small hand pressing flat to his chest as he walked out of the bathroom and went over to the crib. Kissing her head before setting her down, knowing he wouldn't need to wait for her to go to sleep as the shower seemed to do the trick in settling her down. Going over to Lola Ben picked her up, kissing her forehead before he set her down on the other bed with Lily who was laid but now awake.

"Keep an eye on Lola for me princess please, just for five minutes." Ben laid Lola in the middle of the bed since she still looked rather tired. Smiling as Lily wrapped an arm around her middle sister though her eyes moved to look up at Ben, wondering where he was going and what he was doing.

"What are you doing?"

"I need to cuddle your mum for a bit." Heading back over to the other bed Ben crawled over to where (Y/n) was laid, laying down behind her. Resting his arm over her waist so he could pull her back to his chest, pressing his head into the crook of her neck. Not having had much of a chance to catch five minutes with her in peace without something happening or the girls needing something.

They both knew this moment of peace wasn't going to last long, but they could hope.

Robert’s never seen someone fill up a tank of petrol so angrily before. It would almost be impressive if his chest didn’t feel like a boulder had landed on it. He rubs his palm across the jagged rhythm of his heart, trying in vain to soothe some of his panic, but it only takes another glance in the rear-view mirror and suddenly he feels like he can’t breathe again.

There’s the option to pay at the pump but Aaron deliberately ignores that and marches over to the petrol station instead. Robert watches his head appear in the window as he moves towards the cashier, his face like thunder. The woman says something and Aaron turns, pointing at their car, before handing over his card. It takes all of a few seconds but by the time Aaron re-emerges, Robert feels like he might be sick at any moment.

He’s convinced that Aaron is going to ask him to get out. That he’ll drive off on his own and leave Robert at the side of the road, miles from home. He’s got his fingers clamped around his mobile, ready to call Vic and explain everything that’s happened, when Aaron yanks open the driver’s door and climbs in.

Robert opens his mouth to speak, to force his tongue round an apology he’s not sure he’s brave enough to say, but the engine roaring to life beneath his feet stops him. Aaron floors the accelerator, propelling them forwards at such a speed Robert’s neck snaps back. If this was a normal day, he’d make a joke of it. Easy, boy racer. Aaron would roll his eyes or, if he was in a good mood, possibly chance a grin, but today isn’t that day. Aaron’s more likely to thump his jaw than smile right now.

Even with the heavy thrum of the engine and the sound of wet tires on tarmac, the cabin is painfully quiet. Aaron’s breaths are loud and harsh in the confined space, his nostrils flared in silent rage, knuckles ivory as he tightens his grip on the steering wheel. Robert’s hands are clasped together in his lap, a kind of pseudo-prayer to whoever might be listening that he hasn’t just destroyed their marriage… for a second time. 

They manage to get to the last roundabout on the outskirts of Hotten before everything implodes. A BMW cuts Aaron off and he blares his horn, leaning out of the open window to scream a series of swears at the bloke who’s already sped off into the distance. His cheeks are red with anger but it’s the dampness at the corners of his eyes which leaves Robert stricken.

“I’m sorry,” he finally feels able to say, and Aaron’s answering scoff is salt to an open wound.

“You’re sorry,” Aaron mutters, scraping his teeth over his bottom lip as if trying to stop himself from shouting. Robert can’t blame him.

“I didn’t mean–”

“Bollocks!” Aaron interrupts sharply. “Course you meant it. You were itching to find a way out of this, you have been from the beginning, I was just too stupid to see it.”

It stings. Mainly because it’s utterly untrue, though he understands Aaron’s lack of trust all things considered. 

“Why did you even go along with it if you were just gonna fuck it all up now?” Aaron continues, the car now reaching 80mph and climbing. Robert wants to point it out, remind them that they can’t carry on an argument if they’ve both gone head-first through the windscreen. He’s not quite sure if that will go down too well, though, so he stays quiet.

“I mean, I asked you. Over and over again, I asked you if you were sure! And you said you were! You said you couldn’t wait for us to have a kid!”

“That’s true!” Robert jumps in, because he can’t hold his tongue any longer. 

Aaron shakes his head, eyes burning holes in the road ahead. “So what, then? You thought she’d like us better if she knew we broke up just months after we got married?!”

Robert doesn’t know how to answer that, or not in a way that Aaron will readily believe. He’s still not fully sure why he said it himself in all honesty. The whole meeting is a blur now. He remembers him and Aaron entering the cafe, seeing Natalie across a crowd of pensioners and young mums with pushchairs. He remembers them sitting awkwardly around a too-narrow table painted mint green. He remembers Aaron going up to order them tea, and Robert being struck by a sudden and inexplicable urge to run, and compensating for that by just starting to talk. He doesn’t properly remember what he said, only that Natalie’s face had gone from a polite smile to one of concern far too quickly. By the time Aaron had come back with a pot of tea and three cups, Robert was too far in, dredging up their entire history while his husband and their potential surrogate looked on, horrified.

“I don’t know,” he says honestly, but even to his own ears it sounds pathetic. He’s not surprised when Aaron shoots him an accusatory glare.

“Well, I’m glad, Robert. Glad you’ve just fucked up our one chance at this surrogacy thing and all because… you don’t know?!”

His words ricochet in the small cabin and Robert bows his head, guilt claiming him. He can feel his whole body shaking with it and has to look out of the passenger window just to try and focus on something that isn’t their broken future. He’s staring so hard at the endless sweep of greenery that he doesn’t realise Aaron’s pulled them into a layby until the car comes to an abrupt halt.

Robert turns, not sure what to expect, but Aaron’s out of the car before he can ask anything. He sits for a moment, just watching his husband attempting to calm himself, and then slowly steps outside as well.
