✧ INTRO POST ✧
[DISCLAIMER: THE VIEWS AND OPINIONS EXPRESSED ON THIS ACCOUNT ARE MY OWN AND MAY NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT THE OFFICIAL VIEWS AND OPINIONS OF THE HOENN POKÉMON LEAGUE.]
(in other words, this is my ‼️unofficial, not league official‼️ spam rotomblr, so take everything i say on here with a TINY grain of salt & don’t expose me to the league when i say something stupid, because i will inevitably say something stupid)
-
hey rotomblr! been gone for a while so i figure it’s about time for a reintroduction!
my name is floris (they/them), and i’m an aspiring future professor and the current hoenn champion, which i have held the title for 8 years running as of this post! i was named on 8/13/2015 when i was ten years old, which some of you might remember the news coverage of. (side note: don’t look up any of my old interviews, they’re embarrassing as hell)
Tumblr media
^ this is my official hoenn league trainer card! (no you will NOT see mine or my ‘mons registration numbers thank you) and before you guys get all up in arms about two of my hoenn registered team members being alolan, my League team is slightly different, and i don’t reveal that publicly.
the first is my blaziken, my sweet boy apollo <3 my first ever pokémon, given to me by our lovely professor birch! we’ve really grown up together, and despite how much i raised him, i think he raised me a little bit too. he’s a sassy, spoiled brat at his core but still incredibly loyal and affectionate. he’s my best trained, and dare i say my strongest. very protective, very loyal, impulsive about battles.
the second is latios, a member of the eon duo, who i met on a hidden island off the coast (not disclosing where) after his sister petitioned former champion steven stone and i for help. we saved him from illicit capture and he insisted upon traveling with me. he doesn’t take anything too seriously, but he’s not necessarily hyper.
the third is lunala- or nebby, who i technically adopted? i met it a couple of years after becoming hoenn champ, when i was 12, during my first attempt at beating alola’s league. it’s a long, long story, but tl;dr, after it evolved, its caretaker (a friend of mine) left it with me, saying i could take it on more adventures and give it a better life than she could, and i’m doing my best. it’s just happy to be along for the ride, really :)
fourth is rayquaza, who i met atop the sky pillar when i petitioned it for aid with the whole meteor situation. somehow, bewilderingly, i became its Chosen. i’m now its caretaker :)
fifth is my sylveon, pixie! she was an eevee i’d caught early on whose name i couldn’t decide on until one morning i woke up and she had just evolved overnight into a sylveon, and i was young and had no idea that could happen, so i assumed she was lost and had just somehow wandered her way into my tent lol, so i took her around the nearest town and asked if she belonged to anybody. eventually the pokémon center confirmed she was indeed mine! she was confused while this was going down but very happy to be there. she’s very playful and also very intent on helping me with tasks she thinks i need help with! it’s very sweet of her.
sixth is my lurantis, hyacinth, who i met in alola. she’s shyer and tends to keep to herself, and she really likes gardening like a lot of my grass types do. she brings me plant cuttings a lot!
[OOC UNDER CUT]
hi, i’m floris (@astral-faery)! i’m nearly 19 and use they/them pronouns this is a self insert/pokésona blog. canon divergent bc they replaced may in ORAS, but can adapt to most canons! i’m almost 19 and so is champion flor so this blog swears and will have more mature references, but *no* explicit nsfw rps/ERP!
champion flor will answer most asks, even abt their trauma 💀 they might answer asks from sentient/talking/anthropomorphic pokémon, but there’s like NO chance they’re gonna believe it.
i’m very much okay with high stakes rp! champion flor and their pokémon can get hurt irp, but they *will not* get killed. i’m also NOT EVER okay with, like.. sadistic shit. heavy angst is fine, being weird about the angst and having your evil character talk to mine about how much they like to torture pokémon is not.
NO pokémon nsfw allowed EVER! pokémon function as beloved and whimsical pets on this blog even if a couple can technically communicate telepathically. that is how they will remain. don’t be fuckin creepy, yo.
if you’re a pokemon irl/rotomblr blog please interact and send asks and reblog my posts! i was in this community months ago and want to get back into it. i hope to see you guys around!

19th April, Plant Day!
I cannot tell you how tempted I was to write abt fungi but I didn’t want @brutal-nemesis to kill me :) so I can safely say that there is no fungi do not worry :D
Cw: plant whump / ‘stabbing’ sort of / deep cuts / caretaking after / fluff / angst / my gaey boys not having a good time tbh / Alicia being a bitch as usual /
Asher wasn’t happy. He was in Alicia’s house and Jack was right at her feet, kneeling. She raked her hands through his hair. Aaher looked at her in disgust from where he knelt, far away from them both. Why did Rodger have to leave him with this bitch? He would have prefered anyone, anyone over her. Jesus, he’d rather stick a fork in his own fucking eye than be here.
“Anyways,” Alicia sighed, “I want to go to the garden centre to revamp this house and whatnot and the two of you can come if you behave, Asher, I’m looking straight at you. Think of all the fun you could have if you don't throw a fucking tantrum, huh? I’ll even let you two go off for a bit if you're good. But keep in mind, I throw knives like a fucking champ so if one of you decides to try and run, you’ll get a knife in your fucking neck, understood?”
The garden centre was huge, Asher’s eyes lit up as he saw the building. And then there were people, normal people, not sick psychos! Couples, families, you name it! A sudden yank ripped Asher from his thoughts as Alicia pulled back on his top. He stumbled back and Alicia spoke in his ear, “Listen up big boy, you make one single sound to any other people and I will fucking kill you, got it?” Asher quickly nodded, scared to speak.
She forced a smile, “Good, now, let’s not waste any time!” The three walked into the centre, Asher standing in between the pair as he was least trusted. Alicia had her handbag rested against her forearm as she strode in.
There were plants everywhere. Some crawled up the wall, some hung from the ceiling and some were neatly potted and shelved. Asher, completely lost in his thoughts, didn't realise how fast he was walking until Alicia yanked him back, “What the fuck did I just tell you?!” Asher lowered his head, “Sorry.”
Both Jack and Asher followed Alicia obediently as she strolled around the store. Eventually, she had had enough. “Alright, alright! You're starting to piss me off! Just- just- ugh, just go -and stick together. But I swear that if either one of you tries something funny, I will slit both of your throats. Asher looked to Jack who smiled at him. He followed him to the outside area as they held hands in front of them so Alicia couldn't see.
Jack pulled Asher into a corner that was hidden by trees and kissed him gently, wrapping his arms around his waist. Asher chuckled, “Nothing funny, huh?” Jack smiled, “Fine, we can just stop you know, look at these… trees?” Asher chortled, snorting slightly at the end. He traced his hand against Jack’s cheek and jaw, rubbing it slightly, feeling the short stubble.
He brought Jack’s face closer and pecked him on the nose. Jack brought Asher’s hips closer, they kissed again as Jack raked his hands through Asher’s hazelnut hair. “What. the. Fuck?” They both pulled away with a jolt.
Alicia stood there, gobsmacked, “I-you.” She couldn’t form any other words than, “What the fuck.” Asher couldn’t breathe, “Pl-please don’t tell Rodger!! Please!!” That’s when Alicia smiled and chuckled, looking at Jack, “So you’re into Asher, huh? You like the ‘bad boys’?” Jack gulped, blinking fast, “Alicia, please! I-”
Alicia slapped him hard across the face, “I asked you a fucking question!” Jack whimpered. Asher looked in shock, finding himself frozen in shock. “Yes! Okay! I love him, I mean, what is there not to love about him? He’s perfect! He’s brave and he’s handsome. He’s there for me when I need him and he makes me happy every fucking day!”
Asher felt his cheeks flush a deep red. Alicia looked at him blankly, “How sweet. But you know this is simply just not allowed.” The two boys gulped. “Alicia plea-”
“Shut up!!” Asher flinched as she took a step towards him, caressing her sharp nails scraping against his cheek, “Now, now Asher, you know he’s way out of your league!” She cackled, “I mean, what’s the fucking age gap?” Asher clenched his jaw. Her thumb’s nail slightly pressing into his cheek as he let out a yelp.
“Alicia,” Jack raised his voice. Alicia turned to him, nails still digging into Asher’s skin. “Please, he didn’t-”
“You know what?” Alicia sneered, “I don’t think you understand. You are mine and Asher is Rodger’s. You are not permitted to even touch him.” Her grip tightened as blood now ran from Asher’s cut.
“I know, I know, Alicia, please, don’t do this, it was all my fault! I started this! He still doesn’t understand the rules!” Alicia sighed, yanking her hand away, making the cut bigger. “No, he doesn’t, but he will.”
Asher had no clue what she meant until an hour later when he was tied to a chair in Alicia’s kitchen. Alicia circled him, shopping bag in hand. “Have you ever heard of a honey locust?” Asher just glared at her in response, dried blood stuck to his cheek form earlier. “No?” She hummed, taking out what looked like branches of a tree. “Hmmm, well, I was going to give these to Rodger to use them on you, but I guess I can just get more and use these bad boys now!!”
Jack pulled at his cuffs which kept his hands right at the fridge’s handle, “Alicia I-“
“SHUT UP!!!!” Both boys flinched at how loud Alicia was. “Stop sticking up for your bitch all the time! You are mine and he is Rodger’s. And the bast way for you to understand things is to hurt people that you love.”
And with that, she got a thorn and quickly moved it down Asher’s collarbone, leaving a dark red line which blood fell from. Asher let out a howl of pain. His restraints left him unable to double over and protect himself.
Alicia snickered, “Oof, that’s a deep one. Oops?” She did the same thing on the exact another side. This continued until deep gashes covered his abdomen.
When she got bored, she picked up the thorns one by one, piling them into her hand. She dropped the branch and grinned at Jack. She approached a trembling Asher and traced one of the sharp thorns all across and down Asher’s arm, causing goosebumps to rise on his skin.
Without warning, she quickly stabbed a thorn straight into his arm. He yelled, he couldn’t take all of this pain. “P-please, no more! I- AGH!” He was interrupted when she poked another one right under the previous thorn. He felt his vision starting to blur.
Alicia, noticing he was starting to blackout, decided it was enough, for now. “Oh what now? No ‘smart comments’? You see, after a while, I do start to miss them. Its quite satisfying to be honest! You know, Rodger being unable to control his mutt while Jack just sits right at my side like a good bitch.”
Asher saw Jack flinch through his blurred vision. Jack had never heard Alicia call him that. It was always Rodger who did, never Alicia. Did she prefer Asher? No, no, she couldn’t! She loved Jack… right? He looked to the two, Alicia was running a hand through Asher’s hair with a smile as the other’s head lolled to the side as he slowly drifted out of it.
---
Jack was allowed to clean Asher’s wounds. He had a tweezers and was trying to pluck the thorns out from Asher’s delicate skin. Asher let out painful moans as he rocked back and forward. Jack blinked away his tears, “Ash- Asher please, I need you to stay still.” Asher did but once the tweezers were back on the last thorn, he flinched. Jack rolled his eyes, “ASHER! I NEED YOU TO FUCKING-” He froze the minute Asher’ tear-stained face and puffy eyes turned to him. He looked as if he was about to absolutely ball crying.
“Asher, oh my god, Asher, I am so sorry!” Asher blinked and the tears followed. They streamed down his cheeks as his chest rose and fell fast. He whimpered and bit his lip to stop himself from sobbing. “Asher, please I- I didn’t mean to! I’m so sorry!!”
Asher sniffed and blinked rapidly, “ ‘s alright, y-you didnt m-mean to.” Jack’s heart felt heavy but he had to keep cleaning the wounds before Alicia would come in and make some snarky comments. “This is going to sting- wait, I might have some pain killer I can give you, mkay?”
Asher nodded weakly. “Alright, give me a second.” He got up out of the empty bath they sat in and walked to the bathroom cabinet. He scanned through the shelves and his eyes landed on one of the orange containers.
He opened it up and poured two pills into his palm. He then got a glass and filled it with water, knowing the water from the bathroom probably wasn’t the best but it was better to get rid of all of the pain Asher was in already.
He handed Asher the pills and glass. Asher looked at him, waiting for a nod of approval before putting the pills in his mouth and washing them down with the water. “Th-thank you” His voice was hoarse. Jack wiped tears of his own and sat back behind Asher.
Asher’s flinches were less violent. Jack smiled, knowing that his love was in less pain. No- no, not his. Rodger’s. The heaviness settled in his heart once more. Surely there was some way of keeping Asher. Keeping? What the hell was wrong with him?! Maybe he didn’t deserve Asher. Maybe it was for the best.
He looked down as he felt Asher’s back press against him. He was asleep. His adorable face looked so peaceful. His eyes were closed and he wasn’t in pain. His angry face was relaxed and the usual crease in his eyebrows was gone.
Jack gently traced his cheek with his finger. His scar had been reopened and looked painful. After a few moments of peace, Alicia burst through the door, “Jesus fucking Christ, you cant keep your hands off him, can you? After what he went through because of you!” Jack’s head snapped up to her, “Alicia, please, let him sleep, he never sleeps! Please, I’ll do anything!” Alicia fake smiled at him for a moment before shoving her arms under Asher’s arms and dragging him out of the bathtub. Asher let out a yell of shock as he was brought out of his sweet peaceful dreams back to this phscho bitch.
“Alicia, leave him, alone, please!” Alicia just giggled in excitement, “No way, this is a fun thing to play with. You two think you're so in love. But none of you knows what love is!” Asher hung his head in shame and embarrassment. Jack noticed, he knew that Asher had absolutely no memories of his childhood, he didn't know what love was. Jack felt terrible.
Alicia looked between the pair with a shit-eating grin, “Well, you guys must be tired! Asher, you can sleep on the floor in the kitchen. Jack, you're sleeping in with me!” Jack knew better than to refuse. Asher was dragged out of the room and Jack was left sitting in the bathtub, waiting for Alicia to come and show him who he really belonged to.

A quick reference for Hazel’s Pokemon
Reference key:
🌿 gardener (works in Hazel’s aromatherapy/cafe garden, maintaining plants and protecting it from predators)
☕️ cafe worker (waits tables, prepares drinks, sometimes sets up private meetings with hazel for massage services)
💛 contest champ (has won master-level ribbons in their particular field, and is raised/groomed to that standard)
💙 Elite four champ (was part of Hazel’s early “master team”, which she used to beat the elite four multiple times)
💦 Partner of Hazel
❤️ Always in hazel’s 6 (when Hazel goes out of town anywhere and needs to have her 6 pokeballs filled, she’ll switch out all but these Pokémon. They stick very close to her, and are very fond of her.)
- 🌿Georgia (modest/slightly vain, beautifly)
🌿☕️Myrtle (traded from Kamon, modest/likes to thrash, bellossom)
🌿☕️💦Robespierre (lax/strong willed, roserade)
🌿💛Princess Nub (mild/capable of taking hits, lilligant, cute contest master)
🌿☕️Jasmine (traded, naive/likes to run, medicham)
🌿Selena (traded from Kamon, serious/quick to flee, scolipede)
🌿💦Fuille (bold/mischievous, serperior)
🌿Ellie (traded, docile/likes to take siestas, joltik)
☕️💦Zay (bold/likes to relax, zoroark)

Hope (careful/alert to sounds, delcatty)
Blessing (careful/likes to fight, skitty)
💛Chandelle (traded, modest/somewhat vain, chandellure, beauty contest master.)
💛Soldier (docile/strong-willed, crobat, smart contest master.)
💛Cadet (bold/impetuous, swellow, cool contest master.)
🌿💛Chief (quiet/cunning, golem, tough contest master.)
❤️💙💦Captain (mild/a bit quick tempered, gardevoir)
🌿💙Enclaire (naughty/often lost in thought, masquerain)
💙D’Artagnan (bold/sturdy, aggron)
☕️💙Abba (jolly/likes to thrash about, lopunny)
Extra Notes
* Blessing is Hope’s daughter, and knows sucker punch from her father, a houndoom. D’Artagnan has taken a shine to them both as a caretaker, especially because Blessing dreams of taking on the Elite Four.
* Jasmine has a major crush on princess Nub, and was traded because she wouldn’t leave the cafe to come see her.
* Zay and Ardor love to double-team Pokémon and trainers, and it’s unclear if they’re littermates or not, but they’re always in tandem.
* Tinker and Tailor are fraternal twins, and have been with hazel since the beginning of Hazel’s Pokémon journey—along with captain, soldier, Georgia, chief, and D’Artagnan. They are all the oldest Pokémon Hazel has.
* After Hazel beat the elite four, she decided to settle into a more quiet life, but couldn’t resist the spotlight. She entered the contest scene with the help of her oldest Pokémon, as well as with two new additions—princess Nub, an egg hazel had found in her garden, and Chandelle, who was mistakenly on sale in an antique shop.
* Kamon traded Selena and Myrtle to Hazel after a few times coming to the cafe. She traded him for a couple of her high-level elite four champs because he would train them to continue fighting, whereas the two girls could retire in comfort working for her. Kamon visits to check up on them, and of course to see the lovely Hazel~
* Robespierre and Fuille help Hazel stay relaxed in her stress-filled life with a combination of aromatherapy, and clever use of vines. Robespierre bottoms for Captain, and Captain is a power bottom to Fuille.
* Captain uses his psychic-type powers to read how everyone is doing, and knows everyone’s secrets. He and Abba are armed with attract, but he knows Draining Kiss, which he uses on anyone who poses a threat. He is very possessive of Hazel, and sleeps with her almost every night.
* Enclaire has a tendency to use sweet scent to attract wild Pokémon to the garden to catch hazel unawares. When she doesn’t do that, she uses hydro pump to drench her companions, or shoot powerful jets against their most delicate areas. She also uses stun spore a little too liberally to keep Pokémon—or trainers—right where she wants them. VERY naughty.

The garden is never closed
Witch hazel in Central Park in March
Nor, to a great extent, is the outdoors. As the menu of possible activities narrows exponentially—for New York this means no bars, restaurants, gatherings, and nearly all arts/cultural activities—the outdoors is still open for business. It’s one of the few places where social distancing is not only possible, it’s kind of built-in.
Nuthatch at Tifft Nature Preserve, Buffalo
Outside of big summer festivals and always-crowded tourist hot spots like Niagara Falls, parks, preserves, and other public green spaces are usually sparsely populated. There are nature preserves in Western New York where I know I will not see one other person, except maybe a caretaker, on any given day, especially now, in the offseason. In fact, there are no staff on duty at most places, though trails remain open. New York State parks also remain open; there’s just no programming and visitors’ center are shuttered.
Beautiful Goat Island, Niagara Falls, is never crowded at this time.
In our local Facebook gardeners’ group, members, not satisfied with seed-starting, are champing at the bit to get outside and plant. Um, no, it’s really not time yet, with overnight hard freezes still common, but it will be in a couple weeks. At that time, we gardeners can channel our needs to get out and do something. In the meantime, what a great time to make plans, nurture seeds, and take a few quiet walks. Along the wooded trails of a local preserve, I can watch and listen to the birds—migrators are beginning to return—enjoy the different tree forms, and imagine a world before us.
In a world that is beginning to resemble an apocalyptic science fiction film, this brings solace.

The Best Houseplants for Purifying Indoor Air
New Post has been published on http://healingawerness.com/news/the-best-houseplants-for-purifying-indoor-air/
The Best Houseplants for Purifying Indoor Air
I’ve heard it said that a person can go three weeks without food, three days without water (roughly) and three minutes without air (roughly). With those numbers, it seems that air quality should be an important consideration for health, as we proportionately consume more air than any other substance and as chemicals can be easily absorbed through the lungs.
Why Does Indoor Air Need Purifying?
Isn’t it outside air that’s harboring all the toxins? Well, there are plenty of toxins floating around outside thanks to pesticides and herbicides, vehicle fumes, and other industrial pollutants. Unfortunately, you’ll find a plethora of toxins in the air inside your own home as well.
Indoor air quality is affected by:
cleaning products, especially laundry detergent and fabric softener, as laundry chemicals are the top indoor pollutant
chemical flame retardants in furniture, mattresses, and children’s PJs
formaldehyde found in gas stoves, garbage bags, paper towels and tissues, carpet backing, and some fabrics
fragrances
other toxins carried in on your clothes and shoes from outdoors
electromagnetic frequencies (from computers, WiFi, and other electronics)
Simply opening your windows can go a long way, but what else can we do? I found one solution I really like! Plants!
Plants as Air Filters?
I did a lot of research to find the best type of air filters to use in our home. One of our children has allergies, and I wanted to find ways to reduce his allergy reactions in our house. I was ready to spend hundreds of dollars on a top-notch filter and the research I did showed that a much cheaper option might be the best. (We also currently use a basic filter to filter dust and large particles)
According to this article:
“In the late ’80s, NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America studied houseplants as a way to purify the air in space facilities. They found several plants that filter out common volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Lucky for us the plants can also help clean indoor air on Earth, which is typically far more polluted than outdoor air. Other studies have since been published in the Journal of American Society of Horticultural Science, further proving the science.”
Since then, research has narrowed down which plants are the best at filtering indoor air and which plants filter which chemicals the best. Plants naturally absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, but certain  plants also eliminate significant amounts of benzene, formaldehyde and/or trichloroethylene.
According to this article: “The recommendation of NASA is to use 15 to 18 good-sized houseplants in six- to eight-inch (203 mm) diameter containers in a 1,800-square-foot (170 m2) house.”
At our house, we don’t have indoor pets, but finding plants that were safe with kids around was a priority. I also needed plants that were relatively easy to take care of and pretty resilient.
Fortunately I’m mildly obsessed with plants (see my plant wall for proof!) and have tested and researched many over the years. These are my favorites and the ones that are best for indoor air.
The Best Houseplants to Purify Indoor Air
I’ve broken down the best houseplants to purify indoor air by their effectiveness, attractiveness, usefulness, and hardiness. This will help you decide which houseplants will best suit your needs.
Without further ado…
The Most Effective House Plants
These houseplants are the most effective at removing indoor air toxins and contaminants.
Bamboo Palm
Bamboo palms are effective at removing chemical contaminants from the air like formaldehyde and benzene. They also help to keep the air moist, which is especially helpful during winter months when heaters can produce overly dry indoor air.
Bamboo palms have a tropical appearance and, though green instead of the typical tan bamboo color, have the characteristic tall, skinny canes and fanned leaves.
Rubber Plant
The rubber plant is especially effective for removing formaldehyde from indoor air. It’s favored for its ease of growth, as well as its appearance, which features large, rubbery leaves.
The rubber plant can grow up to 8 feet tall in the proper conditions. This large ficus (ficus robusta) is bred for toughness, which means that it’s not only one of the most effective plants for purifying indoor air, but it’s sure to be hardy even in less than ideal conditions.
English Ivy
English ivy is most often seen growing as a covering in atriums and lobbies, but it makes a lovely feature if grown as a topiary. Like the rubber plant, English ivy is known for its ability to remove formaldehyde from the air.
English ivy needs lots of light to look its best, but does well when the temperature doesn’t get too hot. It is, however, very adaptable to its environment, as it will climb and spread over any surface given the chance.
Boston Fern
Ferns are one of the best-known varieties of houseplants, and the Boston fern is known for being the best plant for removing indoor air pollutants, and for adding humidity to indoor air.
While it is a champ at keeping indoor air clean, the Boston fern is somewhat finicky and requires an attentive caretaker. Without frequent watering and misting, the leaves will quickly turn brown and fall off.
Dwarf Date Palm
If you’re into tropical plants, the dwarf date palm is for you. It’s like an adorable mini palm tree that fits in your living room.
The dwarf date palm is one of the most effective palms for removing indoor air pollution, especially xylene, which is found in solvents and paint thinner. It’s also quite good at keeping the air moist and is fairly easy to grow.
The Most Beautiful Houseplants
It’s important to have houseplants that keep your air clean, but what about plants that are nice to look at? Here are the prettiest, best houseplants to purify indoor air.
Tulips
Tulips are truly lovely to look at. They come in a variety of colors, and also do a pretty good job of keeping the air clean, as they’ve been shown to be effective at eliminating formaldehyde, xylene, and ammonia from the air.
Azaleas
The dwarf azalea has been bred to remain indoors and bloom seasonally, and boasts big, pretty blooms. You can purchase it nearly any time of year, and with some care, it can bloom over and over. Of course, you’ll want to keep it blooming because it’s efficient at cleaning the air too.
Orchids
All varieties of orchids are quite pretty, but the level to which they filter the air varies. For instance, the dendrobium orchid features plain white blooms and removes alcohols, acetone, formaldehyde, and chloroform from the air. On the other hand, the more vibrant moth orchid, which features colorful blooms, including the well-known bright pink centered ones, is not as effective at purifying the air.
Wax Begonia
Begonias are a beautiful plant that are available in a number of vibrant colors, which can bloom year round given the right conditions. They also help to remove chemical vapors from the air.
Peacock Plant
With gorgeous purple and green hues, it’s easy to see where the peacock plant got its name. They can provide some help with keeping your air clean but are fairly finicky, requiring a lot of care and attention to growing conditions.
The Most Useful House Plants
These plants tend to be the most all-around useful to keep in your home. Although not necessarily known for their air-filtering ability, but I use these and have them in an indoor kitchen garden for culinary and medicinal uses.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is well known for its ability to soothe burned skin. Keeping it around allows you to use the fresh gel at a moment’s notice for scrapes and burns. It can also be used internally and can be squeezed into smoothies.
Aloe vera isn’t one of the best houseplants to purify indoor air, but it does have the unique ability to release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide at night, making it a good choice for keeping in a bedroom.
Lavender
Lavender, with its earthy, sweet smell, has a soothing, calming effect. You can use it to make tea, tinctures, and even soaps and lotions. It’s also helpful for purifying the air by lowering carbon dioxide levels and cleansing bad smells.
Rosemary
Rosemary is both a culinary powerhouse as well as an air-purifying plant. Its antimicrobial properties make it a good choice for cleaning the air.
The Hardiest Indoor House Plants
Have a black thumb? Then it’s important to choose hardy plants that will be forgiving to your lack of growing skills!
Palms
Palms come in lots of varieties, including the bamboo palm, which we mentioned above. They are both easy to grow and maintain, as well as resistant to pests.
Syngonium
An interesting-looking plant with large leaves, the syngonium is a pretty easy plant to grow. It is moderately effective at purifying the air and will be fairly forgiving to forgetfulness.
Philodendrons
A cousin to the syngonium, philodendrons are one of the best houseplants for purifying indoor air, plus they are rather hardy, requiring little upkeep.
Snake Plant
Snake plants have striking tall, pointy leaves, which would explain the name. There are many species, and while they’re not known as one of the best houseplants for purifying indoor air, like aloe vera, they cleanse the air at night by producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide. Better yet, they’re easy to grow and resist pest infestation well.
And the Awards for Best Houseplants Go to …
If you want to choose just a few from the extensive list above, taking into consideration all above points, here are the winners across all categories:
Palms – Attractive, hardy, and one of the best plants for purifying the air.
Tulips – Very pretty, and quite useful at removing unwanted chemicals from the air.
Philodendrons – Hardy, excellent at purifying indoor air, and they come in lots of varieties, so you’re sure to find a pretty one.
Important Houseplant Caution
Some houseplants can be poisonous to children and pets. The above houseplants are the most effective at cleaning indoor air, but not all of them are safe for children and pets. Make sure to research and check out any plant for safety before bringing it into your home. Personally, I have quite a few houseplants but keep them where I know pets and children won’t try to eat them. Here is a partial list of plants to avoid if you have pets or children who are prone to eat them.
