Aris SRL and Leonardo Awarded Italian Army Contract to Modernise Its FH70 155mm Towed Howitzer
The Italian Army has awarded two contracts, totaling over €21.8 million ($23.8 million), to Aris SRL and Leonardo UK. The focus of these contracts is the upgrade of the FH70 155mm towed howitzer and associated systems currently in service. Leonardo UK secured €15.7 million contract, while Aris SRL received €6.1 million. The decision to modernize the FH70 artillery system comes at a crucial time when European nations are reassessing the role of artillery in the wake of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The Ukrainian military's effective use of tow howitzer in the 155mm caliber has not only showcased the potency of this weapon but has also led to significant ammunition stock depletions among European and Western supporters of Kyiv. The widespread contribution of howitzer systems by European countries to aid Ukraine underscores the urgency for modernization efforts to stay ahead in the evolving battlespace.

Analysis: Comparison between Russian and Ukrainian Artillery powers on the battlefield Ukraine - Russia conflict war 2022 POSTED ON THURSDAY, 28 JULY 2022 16:00 What can Ukraine do facing Russia’s might in the field of artillery?
What towed guns and self-propelled howitzers does each army operate?
A tweet posted on July 17 by Shashank Joshi provides a very interesting chart comparing both arsenals.
 To make it short,
Ukraine is believed to have about 1,000 howitzers and 200 MLRS, both shooting a total of about 4,000-5,000 rounds a day,
while
Russia is believed to have about 3,000 howitzers and 1,300 MLRS, both shooting between 20,000 and 50,000 rounds a day.
Needless to say that the following figures are impossible to check or update, as it is generally the case with OSINT (Open-Source Intelligence). Follow Army Recognition on Google News at this link Comparison between Ukrainian ad Russian artilleries facing each other in Ukraine (Chart source: Twitter account of Shashank Joshi) When Russian President Putin said in early July that ‘’Serious things have not yet started’’, he meant that only a minority of the whole Russian army is involved in his so-called special military operation in Ukraine.
Let us go deeper in detail in the comparison made between both sides’ artillery in the attached chart. Light towed howitzers (100-122mm) Ukraine has about
200 howitzers in the 100- to 122mm caliber range:
about 100 MT-14 100mm (3.4 km range),
and about
100 D-30 122mm (15.3 km range). Russia has about 750 howitzers in the 100- to 122mm caliber range:
about
500 MT-14 100mm howitzers (3.4 km range) + about 500 in reserve,
about
150 D-30 122mm (15.3 km range)
+ 4,400 in reserve,
and about
100 2B16 Nona-K (7-13 km range)
+ 6,600 in reserve.
The balance of power is 3.75 in favor of Russia.
Light self-propelled howitzers (100-122mm) Ukraine has about 230 2S1 Gvodzika 122mm (15.2 km range). Russia has about
500 2S1 Gvodzika 122mm + 1,800 in reserve,
and
50 2S34 Hosta (14 km range),     The balance of power is 2.5 in favor of Russia.
Heavy towed howitzers (152-155mm) Ukraine has about 400 heavy towed howitzers:
50 2A65 Msta-B (25-29 km range),
100 D-20 (17.4-24 km range),
100 2A36 Giatsint-B (26.5-33.5 km range), an unknown number of British-supplied
FH70 155mm howitzers (24-30 km range),
and
136 M777/M777A2 howitzers (25-40 km range).
Russia has about 150 2A65 Msta-B (25-29 km range)
+ 600 in reserve,
and
120 D-20 (17.4-24 km range)
+ 1,000 in reserve.     The balance of power is 1.6 in favor of Ukraine.
Heavy self-propelled howitzers (152-203mm) Ukraine has about 280 heavy self-propelled howitzers: 150 2S3 Akatsiya (20-23 km range) with a limited stock of 152mm rounds,
about
20 2S7 Pion 203mm (37.5-42.5 km range),
42 US-supplied M109A6 Paladin (25-40 km range),
18 Czech-supplied AHS Krab (30km range),
18 French-supplied CAESAR (42-50km range),
20+ XXXX-supplied Zuzana/Dana (40 km range),
and
12 German- and Netherlands-supplied PzH2000 (36-47 km range).
Notice that, on July 27, the German government cleared the sale of 100 PzH2000 by KMW to Ukraine for EUR 1.7 billion,
in the same move as
57 Krabs have been ordered from the Polish company PGZ. Russia has about 1,300 heavy self-propelled howitzers:
about
500 2S3 Akatsiya (20-23 km range)
+ 1,000 in reserve,
about
50 2S7 Pion and 2S7M Malka 203mm (37.5-42.5 km range)
+ 260 in reserve,
about
400 2S19 Msta-S (24-30 km range)
+ 300 in reserve,
and less than
500 2S5 Giatsint-S (15-29km range).     The balance of power is 4.5 in favor of Russia.
Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) Ukraine has about
200 MLRS:
at least
20 RM-70 (20-35 km range),
about
100 BM-21 Grad (20-42 km range),
about
50 BM-27 Uragan with a limited stock of rockets (35 km range),
14 M270 MLRS
and
M142 HIMARS (30-70 km range),
and about
50 BM-30 Smerch with a limited stock of rockets (70-90 km range). Russia has about
1,300 MLRS:
1,000 BM-21 Grad (20-42 km range)
+ 2,000 in reserve,
about
200 BM-27 Uragan (35 km range),
and about
100 BM-30 Smerch (70-90 km range).     The balance of power is 6.5 in favor of Russia.

First we saw that Ukrainian PzH 2000 crews don't use the automatic magazine. Now we see that AHS Krab crews also don't use the automatic magazine, but lift each projectile by hand into the autoloader.
Why? I have a theory - and it tells us a lot about Ukraine's situation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The PzH 2000 has a fully automated magazine with 60 projectiles, which are automatically placed into the autoloader. The autoloader loads and rams the projectiles into the barrel and the automatic primer magazine loads the primer. All this allows for a high rate of fire.
The AHS Krab uses a modernized British AS-90 turret, so I will use an AS-90 video to explain the Krab's loading process. The AS-90 has a fully automatic magazine with 48 projectiles. The selected projectiles are moved to the magazine's center and a crew member then uses a tray to slide them onto the autoloader.  The autoloader then loads and rams the projectiles into the barrel. The original AS-90 required a crew member to push the primer from the primer magazine into the barrel, but as far as I know the Krab loads the primers automatically. This loading system gives the AS-90 and its descendants (K9 Thunder, T-155 Fırtına, AHS Krab) a high rate of fire.
All of these (and i.e. the PzH 2000, Zuzana 2, Archer, CAESAR) use automatic gun laying, GPS, muzzle velocity radar, etc. to quickly and automatically  emplace the gun and fire accurately 6-10 rounds in one minute.
This allows these howitzer to "Shoot and Scoot" = load up on ammo, drive into the range of enemy artillery, stop, emplace, fire 6+ rounds in a minute, then depart before enemy counter battery fire can hit.  Then repeat this shoot and scoot until the magazine is empty.  Then the howitzer exits the range of the enemy artillery, drives to an ammo supply point and refills the magazine.
Every video we saw of Ukrainian troops using CAESAR howitzers was a Shoot and Scoot mission.
Shoot and Scoot allows a self-propelled howitzer to drive very close to the front and fire deep behind enemy lines.
A towed M777 can't do this. Until a M777 crew has readied their gun to be towed, enemy artillery is already raining down on them. So towed guns are not used  to strike into the enemy's rear, but to fire at attacking enemy troops.
Simplified (distances are illustrative): a M777 (or FH70) with a range of 25 km is based 20 km from the front to wait for Russian troops attacking Ukrainian positions.
When that happens the M777 crew fires on the attacking Russians.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To counter a Ukrainian howitzer 20 km behind the front the Russians need to drive i.e. a 2S19 Msta or BM-21 Grad closer to front.
This gives Ukrainian M777 crews the time to move positions before counter battery fire can hit.
A CAESAR (or similar) can be used like a towed gun, but a better use is to give a CAESAR an enemy target deep behind the front (i.e. a command post, an ammo supply point, an artillery position).
The CAESAR then drives to a position 5 km behind the front and from there fires at Russian targets up to 35 km behind the front.  Then the CAESAR moves to a new position and fires again.
For Shoot and Scoot missions you need to identify lots of targets in the enemy's rear (a PzH 2000 can hit 10 targets before the magazine is empty) and you need lots of ammunition. That Ukrainian troops camouflage their PzH 2000 and AHS Krab's extensively and don't load the magazines indicates that they are not used for Shoot and Scoot missions.
In one video a AHS Krab even fired from its camouflaged position... like an M777 would do. If Ukraine indeed doesn't use the AHS Krab and PzH 2000 for Shoot and Scoot missions then the Ukrainians could have one of two problems: a) not enough ammo for Shoot and Scoot b) not enough targets for Shoot and Scoot The 12 PzH 2000 came with 10,000 projectiles... that is just a bit more than what the Italian Army assumes each of its three artillery regiments with 18 PzH 2000 per regiment will use each day (!) in high intensity combat.
I don't know how much ammo Poland sent to Ukraine, but if the problem is ammo more must be send asap. If the problem is that Ukraine isn't able to identify enough targets to employ all of its 12 PzH 2000,
18 AHS Krab and 12 CAESAR in Shoot and Scoot missions, then either Ukraine lacks reconnaissance drones or Russia's air defense belt above its lines is too strong. 16/n If Ukraine lacks reconnaissance drones, then the West can fix that easily by sending more...
if the problem is Russian air defenses, then Ukraine needs to degrade these first. And the tool for that is the M142 with GMLRS rockets. Right now the 4 donated M142 are used to destroy Russian ammo depots far behind Russian lines to blunt Russia's vast artillery superiority. Ammo depots are fixed positions - no need to use a drone to spot them. If next the M142 turn their attention to Russian air defenses then we know why so far the Krabs and PzH 2000 aren't used more efficiently.
Tumblr media
But if both of these systems continue used like towed howitzers even after Russian air defenses have been degraded, then we can be sure that Ukraine has an ammunition problem, because the
Ukrainian CAESAR troops have shown that they are absolutely capable of Shoot and Scoot tactics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I based my thread on how the Italian Army uses its PzH 2000 and on the best available info I could find about Krabs and PzH 2000s in Ukrainian service. If more information comes to light,
I will amend and expand this thread. I hope we will see Ukraine use the full potential of its Krabs and PzH 2000 soon, because both can inflict massive pain on the enemy and it is high time the Russians are driven back and out. A Ukrainian Krab commander wrote @Teoyaomiquu that they have enough ammo and just didn't use the magazine and loading tray because camera operator was in the way.
