SAMHAIN TOURS IN '84, BUT BIG BOYS PULL THE PLUG AT THIS VERY SHOW.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a show flyer and/or gig poster for SAMHAIN headlining with BIG BOYS and CRIMINAL CREW supporting, live at Liberty Lunch, Austin, TX, on September 23, 1984.
PART II: Also featured here, the late, great Randy “Biscuit” Turner also during the BIG BOYS last show, Liberty Lunch, September 1984. 📸: Pat Blashill.
Man, I knew the BB had played with THE MISFITS way back when, but I never guessed that they also played with SAMHAIN this late into 1984. Wow, this is news to me, and I've never seen this flyer before, either! Anyway, I've always known that BB broke up in '84, but I never knew they held out this long into 1984 before deciding to pull the plug on the whole thing. R.I.P. (1977-1983) MISFITS & BIG BOYS (1979-1984).

Part 2
44)Infernarium- Kadotuksen Harmonia
-Ah, sweet, wonderful, nuclear Finnish black metal. Finnish black metal is on fire these days, and bands like this are why.
43)Sargeras- Satan's Terror
- "Welcome to Life, Cunt!" How can you not love these guys? Raw, unapologetic, borderline ridiculous, so awesome black metal.
42) Vargrav- Netherstorm
-Awesome symphonic black metal that worships the sound of old while still charting new territory.
41)Wiegedood- De Doden Hebben Het Goed III
- These guys have yet to release a bad album, and it was so exciting to get to see them. They're good, and I hope they get more recognition for it.
40)Keegan Ostrowski- Ilusen's Fallacy
- Some of the finest progressive death metal you will find, with stellar musicianship all around, and the precision and cohesion is glorious to witness. Let yourself drown in it.
39) The Damned- Evil Spirits
-Much like Judas Priest, here's another band still showing the youngsters how it's done. This album is just pure punk rock fun, and that's how it should be.
38) Hinayana- Order Divine
- These Texas melodic death metallers are definitely going to get bigger. A superb album, and they put on a superb live show too.
37)Solar Temple- Fertile Descent
- Fuzzy ambient black metal isn't always my thing, but this band is great, and they will absolutely bring the riffs.
36)VOID- Jettatura
- This French black n roll band will pummel you with riffs and rage and rythym.
35)Morgal- Morgal
- Even more rifftastic black metal, these fellows are a blast.
34)Kommandant- Blood Eel
- This is already awesome black metal, but the drumming, like all their releases, just pushes it to the next level for me.
33)UADA- Cult of a Dying Sun
-Their sound makes me calm, and tends to make me feel happy. Perhaps its having seen them three times in the span of a year, and each show was an enjoyable time, so maybe I'm just invoking nostalgia when I listen to them. In any case, they're a great band, this is a great album, and you should see them live three times in one year too.
32)Funeral Winds- Sinister Creed
- Raw, almost grimey, awesome black metal that grinds away your soul.
31)Blitzgeist- Ritual Magic
- I chose just one of the three releases from this year, this one is probably my favorite. The title suites the ritualistic, dirge-esque black metal wonderfully.
30)Deth Crux- Mutant Flesh
- This is fantastic Deathrock that evokes everything from Christian Death to more traditional goth rock like Bauhaus, and it pleases me so much.
29)OVÁTE- Ováte
- Again, Norway's still churning out awesome black metal, and this new project is promising.
28) Horror Vacui- New Wave of Fear
- More Deathrock- I really, really enjoy these guys. For me, they have just the perfect blend of goth and punk, and it's so catchy.
27)Panegyrist- Hierurgy
- I keep calling them a black metal Therion, and that's a big deal for me. This year I learned I really like my black metal avant-garde, and this band delivers.
26)BEHEMOTH!- I Loved You at Your Darkest
- While not on par with The Satanist for me, this follow up is still quite good. They've really mastered the creation of atmosphere, and I love it. Songs like "Bartzabel" really appeal to that taste for the avant-garde I mentioned.
25)Funker Vogt- Wasteland
- This is awesome. An absolute testament to why they're one of my favorite industrial bands. Perfect blend of rythym, harshness, and an ability to mellow out at just the right times.
24)Norrhem- Vaienneet Voittajat
- Its the riffs. I don't know what else to say, really. Just, RIFFS.
23)Plaguestorm- Eternal Throne
- High speed, zero fucks raw black metal with excellent guitar solos. Honestly I'm really happy to have such soaring solos in such fantastic black metal. It just makes it that much better.
22)Slavehouse- Taste in Pain
- Speaking of high speed, zero fucks raw black metal, but this one comes with some lovely punk tinges that pushes it just a little higher for me.
21)Blood Worship- Death's Omnipotence
-Do you like Swedish black metal? Yes? Then this band is for you. They specialize in melodic, catchy riffing in the vein of Watain, and they do it well.
Part 2. Almost there!

1.5.19
To celebrate the new year, I've compiled a list of ten albums released in 2018 that I enjoyed and feel deserve to be acknowledged and recognized in a public forum. They are not arranged in any sequence based on quality. The only overarching theme might be that they would generally be considered “underground” music. Even then, some have received widespread critical acclaim. I hope you might be encouraged to investigate these albums and the artists that made them.
10. Deth Crux-Mutant Flesh
There's been a resurgence of classic goth/deathrock/post punk over the past few years. I find this delightful since I've only recently begun to explore this style of music. Several albums on this list are would fall under this categorization. Mutant Flesh calls to mind Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, and newer bands like Beastmilk.
9. Idle Hands-Don't Waste Your Time
This EP has an interesting juxtaposition of super depressing lyrics and music that flirts with classic 80's speed metal as much as it does goth. It's reminiscent of In Solitude [RIP] and Ghost's recent, retro AOR sound.
8. Scorched-Excavated for Evisceration
Technically, this is a collection of surprisingly well recorded demos. John Carpenter-y synth intros (always a plus in my book) give way to old school death metal that chooses not to bury itself in distortion and let you feel every stab. Extra points for most songs clocking in under two minutes with the longest at four. Like any good slasher film, this band knows to get to the point quick and not give us time to think.
7. Sleep-The Sciences
Much has already been said about the comeback album from stoner doom legends Sleep. The riffs are amazing, the band is tight like a glove, Al's vocals are weird. It's Sleep. What more do you want? Finally hearing “Sonic Titan” as a studio recording is a dream many of us had long since deferred. The realization of that dream alone makes this album a gem.
6. Tribulation-Down Below
This is another album that has received coverage from more mainstream sources. While I prefer 2015's The Children of the Night, this is still a great album. Tribulation have tightened their blend of goth rock and melodic death metal. Other bands may be aping this style, but Tribulation still does it best.
5. Various Artists-I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats: All Hail West Texas
This may be my favorite album of 2018. John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats and Joseph Fink of Welcome to Night Vale fame put together a podcast of a song by song analysis of the Mountain Goats album All Hail West Texas. With each episode, artists like Amanda Palmer, Dessa, and Julian Koster recorded a cover of the song being discussed. Styles range from folk to afrobeat to calliope music. Listen to the podcast too.
4. Vastum/Spectral Voice-Split
While consisting of only a measly two songs, this may be my favorite death metal release of the year. The production is better on the Vastum song, which pummels in the way only Vastum can. Spectral Voice opts for a slightly more subtle route, introducing the occasional dissonant lead over top of the bludgeoning.
3. Section H8-Phase One
Section H8 play hardcore with a Pantera-y groove and movie sample intros. Other than that, it's fairly basic, angry d-beat. I love it so much.
2. U.S. Grave-Voice of an Idiot Ghost
The is definitely the second most mellow album on this list. U.S. Grave are another goth revival band. They follow the traditionalist path more than Idle Hands or Deth Crux, but they nail it. The guitars are much lighter and layered, and Robert Smith is probably owed some royalties.
1. Dream Coast-Golden Haze
I've been on a synthwave kick lately, but I hate dance beats so it's hard to find music that scratches that particular itch. Golden Haze delivers and then some. The melodies and chord progressions are interesting enough to avoid the dreaded “ambient” label. The beats are soft and unobtrusive. The tones fit right in alongside the best of John Carpenter and Tangerine Dream.

Getting really pumped for the next Wardance show, THIS Friday in DALLAS! It's an all ages show at RBC with one of my fave bands of the past 10 years, Cross Stitched Eyes. If you're unfamiliar, they play a style of punk that's a mix of hardcore and deathrock, intense and fast but with spooky moments, inspired by Rudimentary Peni, Killing Joke, and Amebix. Members have previously been (or are) in Zygote, Subhumans (UK), UK Subs, Smartpils, Alaric, and others.
One of the best dark punk/deathrock bands in North Texas, RITUAL ORDER, will be opening; so will dark postpunk Wardance alums AZTEC DEATH. Spencer Baxter will be playing a lot of classic punk, '82 style hardcore, and deathrock before and between bands. The legendary Evan Henry will be doing visuals on the walls for the show.
This is NOT one to miss! Doors at 8pm. FB event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/606048529566055/
