Foxconn’s billionaire founder Terry Gou announced on Monday that he will run for president of Taiwan as an independent in the election scheduled for January 2024.

Gou, the self-ruled democracy’s richest man, has long held political ambitions and stepped down from Foxconn in 2019 in an attempt to secure the nomination of the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) in the last election.

He failed in that attempt and was also rebuffed earlier this year when the KMT, which is seen as being friendly to Beijing, chose Hou Yu-ih, the mayor of New Taipei City, as its candidate.

“I have decided to join the 2024 presidential race,” Gou told a press conference.

The tycoon will need to collect 290,000 signatures by November 2 to qualify as an independent candidate, and has been holding campaign-style events around Taiwan in recent months.

Foxconn is one of the world’s largest contract producers of electronics and a key supplier for Apple’s iPhones.

Promising ‘peace’

Gou accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which has won the past two presidential elections, of leading “Taiwan towards the danger of war” and said their domestic policies also had mistakes.

“Give me four years and I promise that I will bring 50 years of peace to the Taiwan Strait and build the deepest foundation for the mutual trust across the strait,” he said in a plea to voters.

“Taiwan must not become Ukraine and I will not let Taiwan become the next Ukraine.”

Vice President Lai Ching-te – who is the DPP’s candidate – is the current election frontrunner, while the KMT’s Hou is running a distant third behind former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je of the small Taiwan People’s Party.

Beijing has stepped up efforts to isolate Taiwan internationally and put pressure on its government ever since President Tsai Ing-wen was first elected in 2016.

China accuses Tsai of being a “separatist” and has staged regular military exercises near and around the island to express its disapproval of her administration and assert its claim over the island.

The DPP says the people of Taiwan should be the ones to decide their future.

At a press conference on Friday, Lai stressed the island’s status as a “sovereign country” and accused China of ratcheting up tensions across the strait.

“Taiwan holds regular elections for our president, vice president, legislators, officials, mayors and local government leaders, and they serve the people, so I think this shows that it is a fact that Taiwan is a sovereign country,” Lai said. “This is a fact, this is the truth.”

His comments came as Beijing criticised the United States for another weapons sale to Taiwan – a $500m package including technology such as infrared search and track systems for Taiwan’s F-16 fighter jets.

While the US does not formally recognise Taiwan, which is also known as the Republic of China, it is one of its top allies and chief security backers. Taiwan regularly buys weapons from the US as a deterrent against military action by China.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has promised to restore Taiwan to the “motherland” by 2049 and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve that goal.

Even Foxconn, China's largest private-sector employer, isn't immune from Beijing's whims. 

Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, is a huge contributor to China's employment and economic growth. It employs 800,000 people in China. Thanks to the company's economic importance, it has thus far enjoyed tax breaks and favorable land-use levies in China. 

But over the weekend, Chinese media reported that Foxconn — the key Apple iPhone supplier based in Taiwan — is under tax audits and investigations into its land use.

The timing of the government's announcement is significant: It comes just about 11 weeks before Taiwan's presidential elections, which are slated to occur in January. And Terry Gou, the billionaire founder of Foxconn, is one of the candidates eyeing the presidency.

In an exchange filing on Sunday, Foxconn said it would cooperate with the investigation.

　高雄市長（鎮其邁）、副市長列席の下、鴻海精密工業（フォックスコム）からは系列「鴻海科技集団」会長の劉楊偉がひな壇に立って、高雄にふたつの大工場を建設する壮麗な着工式が行われた。

日本円換算で１０００億円を投じ、ＥＶならびに電池工場を建設、およそ２０００名の雇用を見込む。中国大陸での新工場はアメリカの圧力を前にして鴻海精密工業としては、台湾に建てた方が得策と判断したのだろう。

　大工業都市となった高雄市は新設の工業団地がある。そのうちの一つ、和発産業団地ではＥＶ電池を生産し、橋闘科学園ではＥＶ自動車仕様のバスを年間５００台製造する。２０２５年に生産開始を見込むとした。

　台湾メディアはこうした前向きの投資プロジェクトを大きく報じているが、主役はなんと入っても鴻海ＣＥＯ郭台銘である。郭は正式に２０２４年台湾総統選への立候補を表明したからである。

かれの両親は山西省出身だから、外省人二世である。英語名はテリー・ゴウ（Terry Gou）。シャープ買収で日本でも名を馳せ、『フォーブス』長者番付で台湾一の富豪となった。

1974年「鴻海プラスチック企業有限公司」を設立、当時台湾の産業を支えたプラスチック製品の製造・加工を始め、創業時は白黒テレビのつまみを作る街工場だった。

「鴻海」の由来は「鴻飛千里、海納百川」（鴻（おおとり）は千里を飛び、海はすべての川を納める）。初心からスケールは大きかったのだ。

以後、躍進を続けた。８５年には米国へ進出、８８年には中国に富士康（フォックスコン）を立ち上げて１００万人を雇用した。映画のモデルにもなった。

２０２３年２月１日、日本電産ＣＥＯだった関潤氏が鴻海ＥＶのＣＥＯとして赴任と電撃的に発表された。関は日産のナンバー３のＣＯＯ（最高執行責任者）として、カルロス・ゴーンが食い逃げた後の日産立て直しに尽力していた。

或る日突然、永守重信に説得され日本電産に電撃移籍した経緯がある。

しかし業績不振を理由に２２年九月に日本電産を突如解任され、永守重信会長とは袂を分かっていた。

鴻海精密工業は、日本電産の売り上げの１３倍もある。

嘗て『台湾の松下幸之助』と言われたのは台湾プラスチックの王永慶で小さな材木商の丁稚小僧から世界的企業に育てた（筆者は三十年ほど前に王とインタビューのため台北の台湾プラスチック本社ビルを訪ねたことがある。王が伝法な日本語を喋るのには驚いた）。

郭台銘もおなじく立志伝中の人物だが、放言癖とぎらぎらした野心はトランプとそっくりだという人もいる。そういえば孫正義、馬雲と並んでトランプが出席したＳＢＧの鍬入れ式でも郭台銘が並んだ。

王永慶が不在となった後、台湾財界を率いるのはＴＳＭＣ（台湾積体電路製造股fen

限公司）の創設者、張忠謀と、この郭台銘である。知名度は世界的にも抜群。

この国民的人気によって国民党予備選で党首席の朱立倫と新北市市長の候友宜を飛び越える可能性はなきにしもあらず。政治的閉塞感をうち破る勢いに台湾の庶民が期待するからだろう。

むろん、与党・民進党関係者は郭台銘が北京寄りの政治姿勢であることを警戒している。また国民党は党内秩序が乱されることを懸念し、郭台銘の電撃参入には迷惑顔だ。

ましてや次期総統選挙前哨戦の段階で、第三党「台湾民衆党」の何文哲（元台北市長）も正式に立候補を声明している。混線となると、『台湾のトランプ���が誕生する可能性はゼロとは言えなくなった。現時点では国民党予備選に勝ったわけでもないから泡沫でしかないけれども、高杉晋作が言ったように「時の勢いには勝てない」のである。

　４月９日に行われた日本の地方統一選挙が最適の見本、奈良県知事が格好の材料を提供してくれる。自民分裂で票が割れ、場違いな候補に勝利をさらわれた。二位と三位の票を足すと当選者より多いのである。したがって台湾総統選挙、何文哲が出馬すれば国民党候補が漁夫の利を得ることは明らかである。

On Sunday, Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn Technology—one of Apple’s largest suppliers—said it is cooperating with Chinese authorities after state media reported China had opened tax and land-use probes into the company. ‘Trump-like’ billionaire presidential candidate in Taiwan promises ’50 years of peace’ with China

Taiwan Billionaire Terry Gou Officially Enters Presidential Race Terry Gou, the billionaire founder of Foxconn and a prominent figure in Taiwanese politics, has officially registered as an independent candidate for the upcoming presidential election on January 13, 2024. After declaring his candidacy in late August, he resigned from his position as a board member of Foxconn in early September to focus on his election campaign. Gou surprised many by choosing Tammy Darshana Lai, a well-known actress-singer and author, as his running mate. Lai played a Taiwanese presidential candidate in a Netflix drama that contributed to the #MeToo movement on the island. The Gou-Lai campaign aims to challenge the decisions of the incumbent party, which they argue have increased tension with China, weakened Taiwan's economy, and isolated the nation from the rest of the world.
