The Taurus Demon is a slightly odd boss - a giant beast that appears out of nowhere for seemingly no reason, just to roadblock you on your way across an unimportant rampart. Being the second boss that most players will encounter, it serves in part as a reminder of the fundamental lesson of Dark Souls: you can beat the odds. It's huge, it blocks almost the whole walkway, its swings have enormous range. But if you climb the ladder, you can sneak a falling attack for massive damage. If you obtain the key in the Undead Burg you can use gold pine resin to buff your weapon. It's a roadblock, but it's a roadblock with ways around it.
Its design does two things. First of all, like the Asylum Demon, the size makes it intimidating and gives it dominance over the battlefield, at least against an inexperienced opponent, but it's also a notably different beast. Hairy and animalistic, its design implies a more natural origin than the hellish Asylum Demon, which, depending on how you interpret the lore, might tell you something about the nature of demons and their origins from the Chaos Flame. Mostly, though, the Taurus Demon is more of a mid-boss than a story boss, and a reminder to the player of the capricious danger of Lordran.
Possibly Drops the Demon's Greataxe: "Carved from the bones of fellow demons. Wielded by the lesser Taurus demons. This axe is imbued with no special power, but can merrily beat foes to a pulp, providing you have the strength to wield it."
RACHEL RANKS: DARK SOULS TRILOGY BOSSES FROM WORST TO BEST
#43: Taurus Demon (Dark Souls)
“And a bull demon too!”
Ah, the ol’ mainstay. Tutorial boss 2. Bridge goat. Plunge practice. The list goes on. Despite my numerous gripes with this boss, I can’t help having a soft spot for it as one of the most memorable early game Dark Souls bosses. That said, it’s far from perfect. For starters, it is just kind of a second tutorial boss rather than a creative experience. There’s also the fucking archers committing the cardinal sin of having regular mobs added into a boss arena. There’s also the fact that the boss can fall off the arena really easily and seemingly unintentionally given the lack of animations for it, but that’s kinda enjoyable as far as jank goes (not to mention how I beat him on my first ever playthrough!) Removing those few annoyances could elevate this fight a lot more, but as it stands It has a solid spot in the middle of the pack.
I beat the Taurus Demon finally- and honestly it’s kinda sad that I didn’t beat him sooner cuz I just had one good run and it took me maybe two minutes…
