So, I’m so sorry I didn’t reply to this, and I hope you got some information elsewhere! I haven’t checked tumblr in forever and I’m only checking it today, I’m not even sure when you asked this.

Honestly, NI voting is complicated. Because we’re very much stuck in a draconian system when it comes to voting. I’m not a shinner, but I honestly wouldn’t rule out Sinn Féin, if you’re a republican. The majority of constituencies in NI don’t have much of a selection at all, and remember, a lot of our parties are still incredibly conservative, socially. Our issue is a) our progressive or liberal candidates, in parties reflecting those values, are limited and b) tactical voting in NI is enormous because voting the wrong way can be diabolical for the rights of people in NI.

Now, straight up, your vote in NI for UK general elections are pretty much pointless. I have to be straight with you. Northern Irish politicians are either abstentionist (ie. Sinn Féin, and are voting in BECAUSE of that) or are voting in, disregarded, are literally unable to make any impact on the government or on voting in parliament and are, to be frank, laughed at by the UK. And, as of right now, your voting in local elections is also pointless, because our government is defunct.

I don’t really feel comfortable telling you who to vote for. I can just give my honest opinion.

DUP, UUP, TUV and any loyalist parties are pro-Tory and pro-conservativism. They’re not progressive in their policies and their reign in NI is detrimental to those living in NI, therefore, they’re out.Alliance are soft unionists. They’re more socially progressive, but this isn’t really a part stance, honestly. They’re more of a party of personal conscience, and have abstained on many important votes. So, if you don’t want to vote for anyone else on the ballot and you read their manifesto, I mean, go for it, but I don’t really respect them much,SDLP are placebos for wishy-washy nationalists or pretend progressives. The SDLP claim to be progressive, but they are infamous on abstaining or voting down progressive moves, such as the vote to extended the ‘67 abortion act or decriminalise abortion in NI. I honestly don’t see them as anything other than liberal centrists, and honestly I abhor them.The Green Party are a party I respect, and I would lend a vote to. They’re progressive and their candidates here all really do seem to be solid individuals who work hard. There are only two real issues with the Green Party here, and that’s they a) don’t have many candidates that stand in rural areas, so those of us in rural areas often don’t have the opportunity to vote for them, and b) due to the sectarian nature of voting in NI, the number of votes they get is so low that they have very little chance of being elected outside of local elections. People Before Profit are probably the party I would suggest you vote for, because they’re progressive, socialist and have been at the forefront of a lot of civil rights movements in NI. If I was in an area with PBP in NI, then they would have my vote. The main issue is, unless you’re in Belfast (and I’m not sure, Derry? Idk if a PBP candidate is standing in Derry right now), then you can’t vote for PBP because they don’t have any candidates in rural areas.As for independents, I mean, I guess that really depends on the specific candidate and if you feel they represent you.

Sorry, that’s very long-winded, and not helpful. The problem I have in answering this is that, for the most part, NI politics is an absolute mess. The people that deserve our votes most are shut out because we live in a place where we primarily focus on identity and attacks on our identities and communities (which, tbf, is valid to a large degree because attacks on specific communities within politics are plentiful here). Like, I’ll be straight up, I voted for Sinn Féin this morning. Not because that’s what I was dead set on, but because I don’t believe in, or agree with, the other candidates in my constituency. Because they were loyalists, an independent that doesn’t have a chance, the SDLP and Alliance.Tactically, in my constituency (Fermanagh/South Tyrone), the only party that has a chance at getting this seat and not handing it to Tom Elliot, ie. loyalist conservatives, ie. Tories, is Sinn Féin.

Constituency Preview: North Antrim

Despite everything, Ian Paisley is going to win this.

In 2017 he received an extraordinary 59% of the vote. There could be a backlash against the scandal of the past few years, but it isn’t as if there had never been any controversy around Ian Paisley in 2017. With no TUV candidate running this time, he may even exceed that 59% figure.

There is no obvious candidate for the electorate to come behind in opposition to Paisley. Outgoing leader Robin Swann is back on the ballot paper for the Ulster Unionists. With a less well known candidate last time they lost about 1500 votes, which they stand a decent chance of reclaiming, but it’s no more than scraps from the Paisley table.

Curiously Sinn Féin are once again running local councillor Cara McShane rather than MLA Phillip McGuigan. There is no realistic prospect of a second Sinn Féin assembly seat, and they couldn’t win this if Liam Neeson was their candidate, so it’s a little odd that they are using this election to boost the profile of McShane. McGuigan was replaced by Daithí McKay as the Sinn Féin assembly candidate in 2007, before being restored in 2016 when McKay stood down in disgrace. Perhaps there is some reason why McGuigan isn’t keen on Stormont, or Sinn Féin aren’t keen on having him there, and McShane will be his next replacement at some point in the future.

After 4 elections failing to make any progress in East Antrim, Margaret McKillop has given it up as a bad job, and is going to see if she has any more luck in North Antrim for the SDLP. Restoring an SDLP assembly seat isn’t impossible with a better balanced nationalist vote and transfers from Alliance, so it may be a worthwhile exercise.

The Alliance Party will try again with Patricia O'Lynn. The 5.6% she achieved in 2017 was the best result Alliance have managed in North Antrim since the Good Friday Agreement, but is still some way off being in contention for a Stormont seat. Alliance probably have a better chance of climbing the mountain than the SDLP though. At an assembly election they should do well from SDLP transfers, but to do that they have to avoid being eliminated before the SDLP. For that reason their target here will be to get ahead of the SDLP

Current Odds: DUP 1/200, UUP 33/1, Sinn Féin 50/1, Alliance 66/1, SDLP 100/1
