I found this neat portrait of Roustam Raza made by Hortense de Beauharnais! Circa 1800s
Roustam was Napoleon’s bodyguard and valet, and Hortense was Napoleon’s stepdaughter. Roustam was an Armenian Mameluke in Egypt, originally from Tbilisi. He became employed by Napoleon during the Egypt campaign in 1799, following him back to Europe, and remained by his side until Napoleon’s abdication in 1814. He lived the rest of his life in France.

Everyone is pretty familiar with the difference between a gallery and a museum, but where do art fairs fit in? With everyone in Miami (at the time of recording) Erika and Alexis decided to break it down - what is an art fair? Who goes? Who participates? And why are people flying all over the world and spending quite a bit of money to do it?

`1TEFAF 2024-2 - Toujours les femmes
TEFAF 2024 - my second and last blog about this fascinating art fair. It's huge, so forgive me if I didn't see all of it, and will give you here a very personal, subjective description...

A colorful modernist painting in a custom brass frame with light patina and wax finish. #Repost @heliclinefineart Stuart Davis (American, 1892-1964) “N.Y. Street Signs" Modernist gouache and traces of pencil on paper in the proto-pop art style for which Davis is celebrated. 1938, Signed lower right. 11 1/4 x 15 1/4 (sight) inches. Frame by Bark Frameworks: 18 1/2 x 22 inches. Stuart Davis (1892 – 1964) is regarded as one of America's finest modernists. He was well known for his jazz-influenced, proto-pop art paintings of the 1940s and 1950s, bold, brash, and colorful, as well as his Ashcan School pictures in the early years of the 20th century. With his contribution of five watercolors, Davis was among the youngest participants in the seminal Armory Show (International Exhibition of Modern Art) in 1913, organized by a group of artists in order to introduce Americans to new developments in art across the Atlantic and at home. Excited by the formal innovations and bold use of color displayed by the European modernists, particularly Matisse, van Gogh, and Gauguin, Davis dedicated the next decades to becoming a modern artist. . During Davis's own lifetime, his work was the subject of several retrospectives, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York (1945). He was represented by Edith Halpert at New York's Downtown Gallery. . #frieze #hamptons #tefaf #artbasel #artsy #modernart #modernism #midcentury #workonpaper #midcenturymodern #barkframeworks #artconsultant #cubist #precisionist #artcollector #abstract #1930sart #20thcenturyart https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgcz6CClNOu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

TEFAF New York 2022 VIP preview party by j- No Via Flickr: Thursday, May 5, 2022, Park Avenue Armory, Manhattan NYC
For the first time since 2019, TEFAF New York is hosting an in-person fair in Manhattan. This is the eighth edition of TEFAF New York to be held at its traditional venue: the Upper East Side's Park Avenue Armory. The fair runs May 6–10, 2022. An invitation-only VIP day was held on Thursday, May 5, which featured numerous champagne and cocktail bars throughout the Armory, roving oyster shuckers, and waiters serving a variety of hors d'oeuvres.
Featuring  91 world-class dealers from around the globe, TEFAF NY offers an unparalleled variety of quality modern and contemporary art, jewelry, antiques and antiquities, and design. TEFAF acts as an expert guide for both private and institutional collectors, and attracts lovers and buyers of art from near and far, including many familiar NYC art scene faces, dressed both in stylish elegance and outre' ensembles, like a face mask sprouting colorful fluttering butterflies.
TEFAF New York was founded in early 2016. Exhibitor stands flowed throughout the Armory’s landmark building, encompassing the cavernous drill hall and extending to both the first and second floors of the Armory’s period rooms. The mezzanine was converted into a champagne and wine bar and its balcony provided guests with a stunning view of the crowds mingling in the aisles of booths below.
TEFAF is a not-for-profit foundation that champions expertise and diversity in the global art community, which takes place annually in Maastricht and New York.

The Little Beggar, c. 1808-09, Napoleonic era
By Hortense Haudebourt-Lescot, French
The Little Beggar is one of the earliest known works by the artist, who arrived in Rome a few months after her professor, Guillaume Guillon-Lethière, had been appointed director of the Academy of France in its new home in the Villa Medici. The subject is exceptional in showing a beggar in such a compassionate light; while he is clearly asking the viewer for money, he is a sympathetic, not a threatening figure, reflecting a significant change of attitude towards the less fortunate.
