“Shift,” a piece by TALsounds, is a splendid musical gem that comes alive beautifully when listened to and enjoyed as a single piece of music. The sound showcased in the nine tracks has a distinctive coherence and consistency that brings out her unique voice. However, the variety of styles and improvisation adds a delightful uniqueness to every individual track. This penchant for improvisation adds a touch of unpredictability and a dash of charming character to TALsounds’ identity.

Dream Theater
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Prog rock and metal. Devastating singer-songwriters. An instrumental master.
Dream Theater, Chicago Theatre
Distance Over Time, the 14th studio album from prog metal legends Dream Theater, was written in 18 days. Does that mean it’s focused? Of course not. The band is, as usual, instrumentally proficient and thematically all over the place. Opener “Untethered Angel” is a hard-charging rocker about a person trying to regain lost hope. “S2N”’s impressively complex time signatures is taken a bit too seriously when the band deliver obvious lyrics about social ills. Don’t get me wrong: the band’s heart is in the right place, “At Wit’s End” decrying the abuse of women. But some of them are plain lazy, “Barstool Warrior” juxtaposing the stories of such women and a man’s existential crisis as two sides of the same despair coin.
Listening to the moments of Distance Over Time that do work, you realize Dream Theater should have played it a bit more safe. “Paralyzed” is the catchy, short, effective rock song of the bunch. “Fall into the Light” is the quintessential cheesy new age enlightenment song, but it’s Ride the Lightning-level heavy. Perhaps the best on the record is the closer “Pale Blue Dot”, or how Carl Sagan referred to Earth from space. The most stadium-sized song on the record, it shows the band challenging the idea that we should feel small. If only on the rest of the album they didn’t get in the way of themselves.
5.9/10
Tonight at the Chicago Theatre, Dream Theater celebrate both Distance Over Time and the 20th anniversary of Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory, starting sets with new material and then playing the latter in full.
Thou & Emma Ruth Rundle, Subterranean
Baton Rouge metal monsters Thou’s latest release is Magus, a collection of the band’s typical sludgy, slow, doom metal instrumentation juxtaposed with Bryan Funck’s icy vocals. But it’s uncharacteristically hopeful. “We refuse to exist in our despair,” they sing on “In the Kingdom of Meaning”, one of many songs on the album that starts with more gentle, echoing instrumentation before delving into its usual sorcery. “We are the sages, reincarnated, up to our old tricks again,” sing a chorus of women on the witchy “Divine Will”. This isn’t to say the band have gone soft. They’re truly menacing on “Greater Invocation of Disgust”, and Funck truly inhabits the dogmatic hedonists he criticizes on “The Changeling Prince”. Live, the band should play heavily from the record, though they’re certainly known for grunge and 90′s indie rock covers.
We previewed Emma Ruth Rundle’s set at Empty Bottle last year:
“Singer-songwriter, guitarist, and visual artist Emma Ruth Rundle has released her opus. On Dark Horses, inspired by her move to Louisville and musical and life partnership with Evan Patterson of Young Widows/Jaye Jayle (who we profiled earlier this year), is about anxiety, dealing with pain, and escaping trauma, but it’s also about being enveloped by love. Its songs are sludgy and slow-burning, anthemic and emotional all at once. The verses chug and the choruses crash, the core band of Patterson on guitar and piano, Todd Cook on bass, and Dylan Nadon on drums providing tension between darkness and light. At the center of it all is Rundle’s weary, empathetic voice, addressing a loved one’s trauma on 'You Don’t Have To Cry', the perfect complement to Patterson’s baritone on love duet “Light Song”.”
Damiana, the collaborative project of local experimental artists TALsounds and Matchess, opens.
Cat Power, United Center
We previewed Cat Power’s set at Thalia Hall late last year:
“At this year’s Riot Fest, Chan Marshall played only the short title track from the not-yet-released Wanderer, what would end up being her first album in 6 years and first not on Matador (who rejected her album because they wanted her to sound more like Adele). Appropriately, Marshall signed with Domino for the album whose title references her very nomadic nature, whether personally or stylistically, and added the track 'Woman' featuring megastar Lana Del Rey that she claims is not a slight on Matador but we all know really is. Marshall 1, everyone else, 0.
Wanderer is quintessential Cat Power for better and for worse. Impressively vocal-forward, minimal, and slinky but also a little dragging, the self-produced record espouses a gentle anger. 'If I had a dime for every time / Tell me I’m not what you need / If I had a quarter, I would pull it together / And I would take it to the bank and then leave,' Marshall sings on the intro to 'Woman' before she and Del Rey harmonize over a 'Breakdown' beat. Even if she is firing shots, she’s also feeling empowered with Del Rey at her side. 'Black' is the story of someone who saved her during her mid-2000s time of addiction, guitars and layered vocals providing more strength in numbers. As with other Cat Power records, there’s a song or two with experimentation–like the auto-tuned vocals on 'Horizon'–but the album is mostly stark and concentrated on Marshall’s silky, warm voice. She notably covers Rihanna’s 'Stay', contextualized by a legendary story involving ex-lovers, broken hearts, and singing the song at a karaoke bar 16 times. But Marshall makes it her own.”
Massively popular folk band Mumford & Sons headline.
Bill MacKay, Hideout
Tonight at the Hideout is the record release for Fountain Fire, the latest album from local guitar hero Bill MacKay. As with other albums he’s made, the new record is incredibly varied. He layers acoustic, distorted electric, and slide guitars on standouts “Pre-California” and “The Movie House”, instrumentals that sound like they could back a lost country classic but live on their own just as well. And the requinto playing that pervaded SpiderBeetleBee’s “I Heard Them Singing” shows up again on “Man & His Panic”. But MacKay brings a couple new tricks, too. The fuzzed out playing on “Arcadia”, enveloping itself, becomes a noise track. On the other end of the spectrum, MacKay reveals something truly lovely: his singing voice, specifically on “Birds of May” and “Try It On”, weathered and emotive like the best of his forebears.
Forest Management, the solo project of local experimental artist John Daniel, & Miranda Winters (of Melkbelly) open. DJ Mariapaz Camargo spins before, between, and after sets.

Release Day Picks: 5/22/20
We are late but we are here. Ten releases from last week that are worth your time. Regular posting will resume next week.
Andrea Cortez - The Secret Songs of Plants (Aural Canyon)
- One of two great releases out on Aural Canyon last week. Andrea Cortez is a music therapist who “designs improvisations and compositions with harp, pedal effects and plant generated music.” The Secret Songs of Plants is a soothing introduction to Cortez’s work.
https://auralcanyonmusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-secret-song-of-plants
Harrington, Gustin & Zahn - Tura Lura (Cascine)
- Coming completely off the radar for me, Tura Lura is a warm instrumental album with elements of jazz and jam. A late night gem of a listen and one I will be coming back to a lot.
https://harringtongustinzahn.bandcamp.com/album/tura-lura
Mary Lattimore & Mac McCaughan - AVL (Self-Released)
- Another mesmerizing release from Mary Lattimore (harp & effects) & Mac McCaughan (synthesizers & sampling) of Superchunk. AVL is a recording from a live performance by the duo in Lattimore’s hometown of Asheville, NC.
https://marylattimoremacmccaughan.bandcamp.com/album/avl
Matthewdavid's Mindflight - Care Tracts (Leaving)
- Care Tracts comes right on the heels of Matthewdavid’s recent Umor Rex release, Experimental Bliss. Two different ambient journeys from the artist, both worth embarking on.
https://matthewdavidmcq.bandcamp.com/album/care-tracts
More Eaze - Towards A Plane (Aural Canyon)
- The second great Aural Canyon release of the week is the second great More Eaze release of 2020. Towards A Plane follows Mari, released in April on Orange Milk. Mari was an experimental pop thrill ride but Towards A Plane is an ambient emo jazz comedown. Yet another captivating release from More Eaze.
https://auralcanyonmusic.bandcamp.com/album/towards-a-plane
Sunmoonstar - Tirra Lirra (Self-Released)
- A compilation of sorts including released and unreleased material but a new album from Sunmoonstar is always something to cherish. Tirra Lirra is a lovely collection of dreamy ambient gems.
https://sunmoonstar.bandcamp.com/album/tirra-lirra
TALsounds - Acquiesce (NNA Tapes)
- TALsounds takes you on another cosmic ambient trip and Acquiesce might be her most complete and rewarding work yet.
https://talsounds.bandcamp.com/album/acquiesce
Vanessa Amara - Poses (Posh Isolation)
- Vanessa Amara’s Manos was one of my favorite albums of 2018 but Poses is something completely different. 12 songs in 18 minutes, Poses feels like a work in progress, a collection of pieces that feel in motion and alive still. Quite the misdirection release from the Danish trio.
https://vanessaamara-poshisolation.bandcamp.com/album/poses
Ryley Walker - Mirror of the Lowlands (Self-Released)
- Walker has been busy during the quarantine. He follows up his recent brilliant work with Brett Naucke with another fine instrumental EP that is a bit more true to his usual style.
https://ryleywalker.bandcamp.com/album/mirror-of-the-lowlands-ep
Woods - Strange To Explain (Woodsist)
It’s been four years since the last Woods full-length album and with spring here and summer on the horizon, Strange To Explain arrives just in time for beach & porch listening.

Music chat
Yep. I listen to them music things. Here’s some I’ve been looking at this past year:
youtube
Ariel Pink, Dedicated to Bobby Jameson. I was honestly expecting a lot worse from Mr. Rosenburg after his masterpiece pom pom. I mean, it only goes downhill from here, and Mature Themes was kind of a weak follow-up to Before Today. That said, it’s actually pretty decent. It feels like calling back to his work before he signed on to 4AD. A resurfacing of the weirdo we once knew, before he rose to some fame (and fighting with Grimes. The hell was that about? Seriously, you two, chill)
youtube
Tara Jane O’Neill, Self-titled. I dunno, I’ve always been fond of Tara’s folk work. Her work is just that little bit of thoughtfulness and strangeness I find alluring in general. I caught on to her a few years back, and her new album is pretty dang solid.
youtube
TALsounds, Love Sick. I came across this artist a couple years ago. She’s extremely talented: Imagine if Mariah Carey, after finishing opera training, decided to play with synths instead of becoming a pop star. While her voice is powerful and haunting, it’s her instrumentation that stands out: A sort of lost maze of weirdness and beauty that is amazing whether she sings or not.  This is her first big-time label release (joining, so I suggest you check it out.
youtube
Ryuichi Sakamoto, async. It’s amazing this guy’s still going. Sakamoto is one of those rare people who, after tasting some fame, decide to go into esoteric direction (Tom Waits and Scott Walker the singer being other examples). After blowing up with Yellow Music Orchestra back in the 70s, Sakamoto’s been doing crazy experimental stuff as well as film scores (He also acted in a film with David Bowie once).  This is from his latest, and it’s rather compelling.
That’s all I have time for right now. In any case, take care, and feel free to comment on music you like...

Brett Naucke - Mirror Ensemble - trio playing synths, violin, organ, piano & voice in a set inspired by Tarkovsky’s 1975 film The Mirror (American Dreams)
“I guess this is my indie rock record,” jokes Chicago electronic musician and composer Brett Naucke - he’s referring to his new LP Mirror Ensemble, created in conjunction with Windy City mainstays Natalie Chami (TALsounds) and Whitney Johnson (Matchess). The album is still leagues outside the confines of “indie rock,” and yet - with its embrace of other collaborators and robust instrumentation - it’s a major departure from his earlier, fully synth-based output, even if modular synthesizers still form its backbone. For one, the songs on Mirror Ensemble sound like...well, songs, often boasting melodic vocalization, strings, and lush layered synthesis. To curate such a cohesion, Naucke utilized scenes from Andrei Tarkovsky’s foundational 1975 film The Mirror as a signpost for mood and atmosphere. It paid off - Mirror Ensemble is bold and beautiful, demonstrating the peak possibilities of focused creation and trust in those closest to you. .... Naucke’s vision for Mirror Ensemble is crystal clear, as are the record’s sonics. From the outset of “The Glass Shifting,” with its evocative viola, textural synth, and duet vocals from Johnson and Chami, it’s clear that Naucke is upping the sense of scale and narrative. Juxtaposing that relatively short piece with the next song, the longform “A Look That Tells Time,” Naucke takes the listener through a massive range of frequencies and timbres. “A Look That Tells Time” moves calmly from organ tones, plucky percussion, and gentle viola to lush, patient synthesizer that swells and stirs. Others like “Sleep With Your Windows Open” are naked, like you stumbled into a rehearsal you weren’t meant to see, but can’t stop watching. On it, Natalie Chami plays piano and sings softly. Room sounds impart a sense of the space, and synthesizer fades in and out, just enough to make its presence known, but never overstaying its welcome. Mirror Ensemble is Naucke at his compositional and conceptual best. It’s a synthesizer record, an orchestral record, and in some ways even a soundtrack. While not quite indie rock, it’s a fierce burst into new territory, and with Naucke’s adventurous, ambitious writing and recording, there’s no telling where his attention will turn next.

Damiana — Vines (Hausu Mountain)
Tumblr media
Vines by Damiana
A vine relies on its surroundings to give it structure. It lives in symbiosis with its surroundings, wrapping around objects and taking on their form. Its inability to defy gravity is matched by an incredible tensile strength: just try to pull a vine apart with your bare hands. Vines are also nourishers. Tomatoes, grapes and other edibles originate from the tendrils of these serpentine flora. Natalie Chami and Whitney Johnson, the Chicago-based musicians who together record as Damiana, create vermicular environments in sound. Each is a prolific artist on their own, Chami recording as TALsounds and Johnson as Matchess. Yet with these two, the sum is greater than the parts. Their tendrils intertwine and rise heavenward together. Vines, their debut as a duo, demonstrates this synergy as the pair seek to nourish us with sound.
Both Chami and Johnson are talented synthesists and vocalists, existing in the liminal space between ambient sound and structured song form. When their exotic elixirs are combined, there is an added depth and richness that arises from the fusion. “Wrap the Sky” features intertwined synth melodies that seem to continuously multiply such that the sonic brew gets thicker as the song progresses. Johnson adds her viola to the mix, which only increases the lushness. Breathy vocals amplify the intensity as they waft over the music like sheets of fog. Cut up viola passages lead us toward “Melted Reach,” which becomes a ferocious maelstrom of noise by its mid point. Through the magic of sampling, Johnson is simultaneously a purveyor of both long bow strokes and careening attacks on her instrument. Synth drones provide a foundation on which the strings wrestle, while cyclones of static whirl about. Eventually the storm dissipates, and Johnson beckons us toward calmness with a solo viola outro.
The duo’s ghostly vocals haunt the entirety of Vines. Chani and Johnson breathe mellifluous melodies over the music, leveraging their voices primarily for their sonic properties. “Sunken Lupine” is a voice-forward piece that finds the duo weaving their voices into a multi-hued choir of angelic utterances. Chani and Johnson excel at layering sound, constructing harmonies that writhe beautifully. On this particular piece, they accomplish this through exhalation.
Chami and Johnson named this collaborative project after a small, unassuming shrub. It’s a plant with interesting properties that belie its unremarkable size. The flowers of the damiana can be fermented into a golden liqueur and are rumored to have an aphrodisiac quality. It brings about an intoxicatingly pleasant experience for those who choose to partake and is the perfect namesake for this stirring musical experience.
