Hello! I read TPOFATGIF for the first time this week after binge reading your lore posts, and I have a lore question. I get that the home of the main case is a Japan/America amalgamation similar to that of Big Hero 6, but is there any lore reason as to why its like that? Were Japan and America separate places in this world and then fused later or has it always been like this?

I wrote them in a place that is both Japan and California at the same time because of the Animaniacs.

For some additional context, for me, my first exposure to Yugioh was the infamous 4Kids Dub on Kids!WB whch was... weird, to say the least.

YuGiOh was one of the first anime-anime they showed on that network, after Pokemon, and the first cartoon series I recall that had a specific airdate order- everything before then had been episodic in the sense that it didn't really matter what order the season's episodes were shown in- it didn't matter who Batman fought last week, this week he was on another case. Pokemon did reference previous episodes, but was so full of random filler and side-adventures that it didn't really matter when WB showed the first season out of order. One staruday Ash just had a Charmander now and we just rolled with that.

But Yugioh started off with "Previously On Yugioh" flashbacks that really only made sense if you'd seen the previous episode, and as calvinball as the games were, they did have like. A Turn Order that you had to follow consistently, and it was the first time my 5th-grade self had ever seen a show with a sesonal plot and I was BUCKWILD about it.

At the same time, this was still a very Transitional period for KidsWB, going from a lot of cartoons that were produced in-house to a lot of cartoons produced in independent studios or in Japan. One of the most famous In-House cartoons, that was still (barely) running in 2000 when YGO hit, was the cartoon that built the KidsWB Brand: Animaniacs. The Animaniacs, for those of you that were only born this millenium, were a trio of... creatures. The Warner Brothers, Yakko Warner and Wakko Warner, and their sister, Dot who would escape from the water tower where they were lcked up last week, to cause mayhem and make remarkably sharp and adult satirical jokes about current events, until they were caught and locked back up until next week. It was directed by steven speilberg and it was fucking wild.

But a peculiar precept of the Animaniacs universe was that they explicitly, in the canon of their show, lived in the water tower on the Real Life Warner Movie Studios Lot, in Real Life Burbank, CA. The backgrounds were frequently traced photographs of the IRL Studio and surrounding hollywood landmarks. In addition to the show, the Studio also made "Bumps" or micro-episdodes that were like, 30 seconds long, for when the commericals didn't quite fill out the whole half hour. In those, the Animaniacs made jokes like they were actors employed by the studio, playing the role of the Animaniacs, and would complain about the on-site parking or the latest contracts, a meta-joke that goes clean back to the Looney Tunes in the 1950's and probably farther. Bugs and Daffy were there too, threatening to go on strike, but the Animaniacs combined that meta joke with their canon of living on-site to like. Complain about traffic on specific roads in Brubank.

...and then when KidsWB started accepting cartoons from other studios, they KEPT doing those Meta Bumps. Batman and Daffy comisserated about the difficultly of keeping thier black suits black over a cup of coffee. Omi of Xaolin Showdown and Riccochet of Lucha Libre compared the relative amount of workman's comp they were owed for thier stunts behind one of the sets. When Yugioh joined the network, it's characters were also added to the bumps.

One particular bump stood out to me, and unfortunately I haven't ever found a recording of it, but characters were complaining about commute times to work. The Animaniacs kicked off with not understanding how everyone was late to shooting, Come on guys, we're PROFESSIONALS. Uncle from Jackie Chan Adventures told them off- they lived on site, he had to commute all the way from San Francisco's Chinatown! That's nothing, groans Batman, Do you have any idea how much he spends in Batfuel for the Batjet commuting in from Gotham. Chinatown? laughs Omi, try commuting from actual China! Yugi walks in and asks what's going on, and someone asks him how long it takes him to get to work.

"Oh, I just walk over after school." Yugi says, and there is a cut to the expanded scenery with Warner Brothers Studio on one side of the street, and Domino High School on the other side of the street. "It's a good thing school is so close." he adds. "I have to spend like four hours in special FX and makeup to get my hair to do this! If I had to commute, we'd never have time to shoot!"

... And that joke-within-a-joke Micro-universe, that takes place in twelve different cartoon shows and IRL Burbank California, just an hour south of where my grandparents lived, that peculiar metaverse where my childhood nostalgia lives, is the universe where TPOFATGIF takes place. It's in IRL late 90's/early 00's California, because I lived in California in the late 90's and early 00's and that's the context I first experienced YGO in. It's in the IRL parts of Tokyo that Takahashi-sensei put into his Magnum opus. It's in a universe that contain's both Gotham City and Uncle's Antiques. It's Big Hero Six's San Fransokyo, and Ace Attorney's Japanifornia.

But that wasn't actually the question you asked.

Please consider: Tea and Bakura were both born on "Leap Days"- days when the calendar can't be reliably measured, where day repeat or blend together. Mako's dad is lost in the South Pacific Triange, a mysterious place where you can sail east all day and end up west of where you started. Tristan's dad has a job that is basically being a supplier to D&D Adventuerers.

But as far as everyone knows, it's always been like this. Sometimes there are extra days, or wormholes, or monsters. Reality is just like that, as far as anyone can remember.

But.

Not everyone remembers, do they? Mahad knows his king by his face but not how he came to be the Dark Magician, just that he is. Neither Shadi knew where the Millenium Puzzle was until very recently, which seems a odd for the Guardian(s) of the Millenium items. The Spirit of the Ring has memories upon memories upon memories, but neither he nor Yami can even remember their names. in fact, nobody theoretically old enough to remember what happened 5,000 years ago actually remembers.

I wonder what that's all about? :)

tomorrow war was mediocre. not terrible. not amazing. jk simmons was great and I always love seeing him. chris pratt was the same as always- pretty good I guess but nothing really award worthy. competent. meat and potatoes. average joe. like seth rogen & bradley cooper. not quite like jack black & rainn wilson. more than jonah hill & j*mes franco. right smack in the middle. he's perfect for mediocre movies.

it was basically terminator meets cloverfield, and by that I mean it literally STOLE the plot of terminator (plot holes and all) and STOLE the creature design of cloverfield, but whatever. both are better movies by long margins.

like, the dad goes forward in time to help his daughter in the future make a toxin to fight the aliens who were on earth the whole time, and then he goes back to the past present to fight the robots aliens in the future's past present and prevent skynet the aliens from killing all humans and making it so john connor his kid can live a normal happy life in the future, even though IF YOU CHANGED THE FUTURE SO JOHN CONNOR NEVER FOUGHT SKYNET AND SENT KYLE REESE BACK IN TIME TO FUCK SARAH CONNOR THEN JOHN WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN BORN TO GROW UP TO FIGHT SKYNET. or, I mean, your daughter never made the toxin to kill the aliens so how did you kill the aliens? with the toxin you made in a different timeline? the toxin that doesn't exist in this timeline? that toxin???

STOP WRITING STORIES ABOUT TIME TRAVEL IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THE BASIC FUCKING RULES OF TIME TRAVEL.

you're not James Cameron or Steven Speilberg or Robert Zemeckis or Ridley Scott or Terry Gilliam or JJ Abrams (all who at least have a basic understanding of how time travel is supposed to work on SOME scope) [i am not saying Rian Johnson here for a reason], and you're not even JK Rowling and she is the BOTTOM OF THE BARREL for knowing how time travel works. Alex Hirsch and the Doctor Who writers get free passes because a) it's a TVY7 cartoon and b) it's a 50 year franchise.

There's a reason I am such a nerd girl and live for the fandom. My generation was filled with amazing cartoons and movies. Fantasy was just part of who we were, and for some, still are. One of the movies that ruled my young heart was Gremlins produced by Steven Speilberg. If you're not familiar, Gremlins is a horror comedy from the 80's. It revolved around a creature named Gizmo, who is the cutest thing EVER! Gizmo is a Mogwai and it has very specific rules. If you don't follow them, he spawns evil little children that are a freaking nightmare. Did you know @howiemandel is the voice of Gizmo? Pretty awesome! A 3rd part is being talked about and I'm affraid what Hollywood would do to it. I mean look at what the did the Jem & the Holograms. That movie was a joke! Any who I love my Gizmo and I am soo excited @originalfunko came out with their version. Hulu is resurrecting 'Animaniacs' and streaming previous seasons

If you felt your inner child screaming with joy, there's a reason: Hulu is resurrecting one of your favorite Saturday morning cartoons: Animaniacs. Steven Speilberg is returning to executive produce two brand-new seasons of the classic show, which will debut on the streaming service in 2020.

If that wasn't enough, Hulu also got every episode of the original Animaniacs, as well as the spinoff Pinky and the Brain, its follow-up Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain and the entirety of Tiny Toon Adventures. As in, you can stream all of those now while you (and the rest of us) wait for the new seasons to drop. Hopefully those doses of nostalgia will make up for Hulu's failure to also snag the sublime WB cartoon Freakazoid!

Twilight Zone: The Movie - Uneven but mostly Solid Tribute to a groundbreaking Television Series

An anthology style movie with four parts, with some of the hot young directors of the day at the helm, each taking a stab at recreating a 'Twilight Zone' episode, with a thin connecting thread to hold them all together (featuring Albert Brooks and Dan Aykroyd, in one of the more entertaining bits in the whole movie).

Segment one: This was the most troubled part of the production, where the star of the film ended up being killed during a helicopter accident while filming. The sequence was finished up and re-edited, but the whole thing comes across as unfinished and choppy (pardon the pun). This is the one sequence that isn't based on an actual previous Twilight Zone episode, but the tone of the piece fits right in their with Rod Serling's usual sermonizing tone.

Vic Morrow plays a bigot who finds himself transported through time to experience things from the point of view of 1) a black man being lynched by the klan, and as 2) a jew on the run from the nazi's, and then 3) as a viet cong on the run from US soldiers during the war, and it ends with him on a train to Auchwitz. Not particularly interesting or suspenseful, but thankfully short and you forget it while the more superior stories wash over you for the rest of the picture. John Landis directed this 'Weak Link' of the four.

Segment two: This one is directed by Steven Speilberg and is based on the episode 'Kick the Can', and pretty much sticks to the original storyline (except for the ending). Cute and full of awe and wonder, but not particularly frightening. Nice performances by all the old folks, especially Scatman Crothers as the 'young at heart' instigator.

Segment three: This is one of the two best ones of the four. Directed by Joe Dante, and based on the episode that originally starred Billy Mumy (who has a brief cameo in this), about a little boy with tremendous powers and the 'family members' he has imprisoned in his house of horrors. The whole thing is reminiscent of old Warner Brothers cartoons, and is alternately hilarious and scary as hell. Wonderful timing and direction, and is unfortunate that it sort of falls apart near the end.

Segment four: My favorite of the four, a tight little suspenser based on the original Twilight Zone episode, 'Nightmare at 40,000 Feet'. Directed by George Miller, it stars a manic John Lithgow as a frightened airline passenger who thinks that he sees a gremlin tearing the wing of the airplane apart and staring in the window at him (of course, no one else sees it until it is too late). At this point, after Mad Max 2 and this short film, I was sure that I'd be enjoying George Miller films well into the future, but unfortunately, he sort of fizzled out after Mad Max 3, The Witches of Eastwick and a few producerships.

In the opening titles of Steven Speilberg’s “Catch Me if You Can” we see a short cartoon visual summary of the movie that follows.  In this title sequence, we are drawn to two distinct cartoon characters.  The film does this by producing the actor's names when the two cartoons are first introduced,  We know one of them is Leonardo DiCaprio and the other is Tom Hanks.  Through the sequence we see Hanks’ character chasing and searching for Dicaprio’s as they move through the different settings of the movie.  Thus creating a short summary of the movie to come before it is even played.  The reason for doing this is to pay homage to film in the period in which the film takes place, the 1960′s.  At the time many movies used similar title sequences to convey the movie before it actually even started.  Intertextually the thought of a James Bond title sequence is brought to mind due to the similarities of ambiguous dream-like elements through the use of the text.  In addition, typography plays a huge role in the creation of the opening titles.  To start the use of a modern sans serif font represents the period of the movie very well.  Also in many shots, the text actually becomes a piece of the story as Leonardo DiCaprio's character interacts with it during the opening titles.  This is not only cool to look at but describes Dicaprio’s character as the cunning con artist he is.  The title sequence is fantastic in the sense that it pays homage to films of the 1960′s and creates a narrative before the film actually starts.
