Charles Krug Winery, St. Helena (No. 1)
The Charles Krug Winery is a winery founded by Charles Krug in 1861. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places on November 8, 1974.
Historically, Charles Krug introduced innovative ideas in California winemaking. He began making wine using a cider press for pressing, carefully selected rootstocks, varietals and vineyard sites. The knowledge he gained and shared benefited the young California wine industry. Following Krug's death, James Moffitt Sr. purchased the winery in 1894. In 1943, Robert Mondavi persuaded his parents, Cesare and Rosa Mondavi, to purchase the inactive winery from Moffitt for $75,000.
The winery remains owned by the family of Peter Mondavi, Robert's brother.

Didn’t really see this one coming… Pulled a miserably corked Shiraz out and opened this as a back-up, not expecting much. Wow. What a surprise. I want to go down Villa Mt. Eden or even Bradford trails with this one, and old-school people will understand. But this is a proprietary red of relative low price and here at 14 it stuns. Heavy sediment in an opaque black glass with considerable brick.…

Napa Valley
This morning we decided to do a bit of a drive north of San Francisco to the wine region of Napa Valley. This also allowed us to do a round trip over various bridges in the bay starting with the Bay Bridge and then north into the Napa area where we stopped for breakfast. There were so many wineries and vineyards it was difficult to keep up!
We then turned east towards the hills and our route took us over the ridge into the adjoining Cappell Valley which we followed to Lake Hennessey and then back to St Helena and then the route back south through Zinfandel. The number of vineyards was astonishing and we also saw the Napa Valley Wine Train which has got to be a must if we return to the area.
Due to slightly dodgy stomachs, we decided to return to the city, which was just as well as the rain decided to set in, which had been promised. We came back via the San Pablo Bay road which allowed us to see a fair bit of birdlife, including an egret sitting right next to the road and lanes of traffic, and then up and over Golden Gate bridge which was clear at the time.
Back at the hotel we got some stuff for another bed picnic tonight whilst packing all the stuff ready for the next two days of flying as we cross the International date line going this way and lose a day but even so we still leave tomorrow evening for Auckland and then fly straight on Sunday to Melbourne. Tomorrow we intend heading to Sausalito for an early lunch before heading to the airport and if we get time and the weather is reasonable to go to Muir Woods but the forecast isn't great.

Roots Matter
“The Land! That is where our roots are. There is the basis of our physical life.” Henry Ford
As a gardener, I spend copious amounts of time thinking about roots. Healthy roots are critical indicators of the overall health and survival of plants and trees.

Why are roots essential?
Anchorage: One of the primary functions of roots is to anchor the plant firmly in the soil so that it is not uprooted by wind, water, or other forces of nature.
Absorption: Roots absorb water and nutrients essential for growth and development. The extensive network of roots maximizes the plant’s ability to access these resources.
Storage: The root system also stores energy in the form of starches and sugars which can be utilized during periods of drought or new growth.
Transport: The vascular system extends from the roots to the leaves to the stems facilitating movement of water and nutrients.
Stabilization: Roots reduce erosion by binding the soil particles together making the plant strong and stable.
Microbial Support: Roots contribute to improving soil structure by promoting microbial activity and organic matter decomposition. Mycorrhizal fungi and nitrogen-fixing bacteria enhance nutrient uptake and protect plants from pathogens.
Aeration: Roots create tiny channels in the soil as they grow. These channels allow oxygen to penetrate deeper into the soil, which promotes a healthier ecosystem. Roots also prevent soil compaction which aids in better water infiltration and growth.
Drought Resistance: Periods of drought are survival because of deep root systems and taproots.
Without healthy roots, all plants would struggle to survive.
Human roots are also important.
Recently friends invited my husband and me to a picnic and a private wine tasting at Beringer Brothers in St. Helena. “How fun,” I responded. “It will be great to be back in my stomping grounds.” Although we had been friends for years and they knew that I’d grown up in the vineyards, they didn’t know the story of my roots. I’ll share a snippet of my heritage with you.
My paternal grandfather, Fred Abruzzini, was the son of Italian immigrants who emigrated to America via Canada at the turn of the century. As a boy, he began working with my great uncle at Cribari Winery in Madrone where he became the winemaker. Between Prohibition and the Great Depression, many California wineries closed. Beringer Brothers was faltering. Federal agents suggested to Bertha Beringer that she hire someone with integrity and knowledge, someone like Fred Abruzzini. He motored up to St. Helena and when he saw the caves, he believed that he could make some excellent wine.
(Photo from Fortune Magazine, May 1941)
In 1932 at the age of 28, in exchange for free rein, he was hired to be Beringer’s manager, wine maker, and chief promoter. He gambled that Franklin Delano Roosevelt would be elected President and end prohibition, so he began crushing more grapes, making wine and port. Prohibition ended in 1933 and in 1934 Grandpa had the innovative idea to open the cellars to the public for tours, and on special occasions, free tastings. For the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, a World’s Fair held at Treasure Island, he created the first colorful map of “one of California’s most delightful one-day trips” where all roads led to Beringer.
Clark Gable, Carol Lombard, Charles Laughton, Tom Mix, Ginger Rogers, Roy Rogers, Abbott and Costello, Max Baer, Rudy Vallee, and a bevy of other luminaries visited often and became friends. He mentored the “youngsters” as he called them Robert and Peter Mondavi as well as other winemakers. Fred became a legend in California with his publicity for the wine industry of Napa Valley and literally put Napa Valley on the map.
As children, we rode horses, barbecued, roamed the caves, and played at the winery. For many years, the grapes from our vineyards were crushed into Beringer wines. Grandpa was killed in 1988 when a gigantic elm tree toppled on him while he mowed his lawn. He would be proud to know that the roots he planted as the first person to offer tours and tastings to the public have grown into Napa Valley being the beautiful and renowned wine destination it is today.
Cuttings from those first grape canes planted by my grandfather are rooted and thriving in my garden. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have continued his legacy.
Roots. Yes, they are the basis of our physical life.
The Goddess Gardener’s September Gardening Guide
ü  DEEP SOAK roots of trees in need with a soaker hose during dry spells.
ü  HARVEST apples, Asian pears, Bartlett pears, grapes, blackberries, tomatoes, prickly pear, and quince.
ü  CUT and dry big heads of hydrangeas for indoor bouquets.
ü  PLAN to plant cover crops to add maximum benefits to your soil over the winter. Fall mixes can include seeds of legumes, grass, grains, brassica, vetch, rye, clover, and radish. These will suppress weeds, add aeration, and increase soil aggregation.
ü  SEND a plant off to college with your student to keep the indoor air clean while offering memory and concentration improvement.  Prayer plants, peace lilies, pothos, and snake plants are easy-to-grow specimens that will acclimate well to dorm rooms.
ü  SAVE seeds from your favorite perennials.
ü  DEADHEAD roses for several more flurries of blooms before January.
ü  PRUNE a shrub into a creative topiary!
ü  ENJOY the bright colors of impatiens in borders and beds.
ü  RELISH your roots!
Happy Gardening! Happy Growing!

A Bakery that’s the heart-beat of Wine Country
Tumblr media
A delightful local bakery at the heart of St. Helena is Model Bakery. After a visit to Pestoni Family Winery near Rutherford, I had a craving for some yummy sweet pastries in the afternoon. I settled on cookies, which didn’t disappoint. I am a fan of gingerbread, so Model’s version of a molasses cookie was satisfying. Soft but lightly crispy on the edges. And plenty of deep rich molasses flavor. I was introduced to Model by a local who reassured that the fuss to find parking amid lots of tourists on a Sunday is worth it. And, he was right! Thanks Tony Suttles! Turns out he should know because he’s a retired chef who used to work at some of the finest restaurants in St. Helena and Yountville.
Some history on Model as noted at its website, is that for almost ninety years The Model Bakery has been a Napa Valley mainstay, serving discerning residents and visitors alike.
Model offers the best breads, pastries and coffee, I can certainly give witness to that. It’s aromatic and gratifying.
As I was told, Model’s history began at the flagship Main Street location in St. Helena, later branching out to the Oxbow Public Market in Napa and is now operating in the newly opened ‘Mini Model’ in Yountville.
I want to return to have Model’s fresh homemade pizza, and to have the famous English muffin. Of which I was told by Tony is shipped regularly to celebrities like Oprah Winfrey. Really it’s true! It’s been featured in the news.
I was really surprised that the coffee is delicious, even later in the day. Service was excellent! Very friendly and helpful staff. Like I said, I want to return to experience and take in more.

When the balloon is ready, the passengers board, and the experienced pilot allows the balloon to ascend slowly and safely. Because the balloon floats silently along with the wind currents, passengers will experience little buffeting or rocking motions.
After a 45-minute to one-hour flight, the skilled pilot will descend safely to the designated landing zone, where everyone will disembark and return to the Oxbow Market. A post-flight champagne brunch is optional.
To learn more, make your reservations, or purchase Gift Certificates for future balloon rides near me, visit the Balloons Above the Valley website.
Or, for answers to your questions or to make reservations, you may also phone a Balloons Above the Valley reservationist at 1-800-464-6824.

Week 192: Happy Summer! On Friday, June 9th we celebrated Maxim's last day of kindergarten with a trip up to wine country with Katie and Laura! We stayed in a lovely airBnB, 4343 Sonoma Mountain Rd, Santa Rosa, complete with hot tub, playground, hammock, and foosball table. Maxim celebrated his love of reading (and Elephant & Piggie). Then on Saturday, June 10th, the kids got to stay with a fun babysitter while Lianna and Andrei went with their friends to Mi Sueño Winery, 910 Enterprise Way, Napa, followed by Ackerman Family Vineyards at the Ackerman Heritage House, 608 Randolph St, and then Duckhorn Vineyards, 1000 Lodi Lane, St. Helena. We then got gelato from Cafe della Valle, 1142 Main St, and dinner from Willi's Wine Bar, 1415 Town and Country Dr, Santa Rosa.

Northern California Trip
Baby’s first trip 3 days
San Francisco, Yosemite & Napa Valley
My son was 7 months on his first plane trip. Here’s what we did on the trip. We took a light stroller and a car seat that we were worrying about getting damaged. I carried him on my lap since he was only 7 months old. We took the car seat for the limo ride to Napa Valley. We took the stroller on the hop on and off bus it was very easy to manage. I took the carrier to the Yosemite trip.

Baby’s first hike was Vernal Fall Footbridge. The best part was he fell asleep in his carrier as I walked up the steep hill pulling my mom behind me.
Distance: 1.6 mi (2.6 km) round trip
Elevation gain: 400 ft (120 m)
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 1-1.5 hours
Vernal Fall footbridge: A mile from the trailhead, the Mist Trail crosses a footbridge from the north to the south bank of the Merced River. You'll get your first sight of Vernal Fall here, as well as pleasant views of the river both up and downstream. There are also bathrooms and potable water on the far side of the bridge. It's generally the first breath-catching point for hikers on their way to the top of the Mist Trail or Half Dome.
You'll find an excellent view of Vernal Fall from the footbridge at 0.8 miles (1.3 km). About 0.2 miles (0.3 km) beyond the bridge, the Mist Trail and the John Muir Trail diverge.
Difficulty: It's a short hike, but it's still a stretch to call it easy. There's enough climbing here to make you sweat.

The Painted Ladies
Colorful Victorian and Edwardian houses, many of which feature three or more colors. The most famous ones—there are hundreds of houses—can be found in NoPa, the Lower Haight, Haight-Ashbury, and Cole Valley neighborhoods. But there’s one row, in particular, so iconic that it’s simply referred to as “the Painted Ladies” (or sometimes “Postcard Row”): the houses of 710-720 Steiner Street at the corner of Hayes Street. These gals have appeared in an estimated 70 movies, ads, and TV shows including, yes, Full House. You can’t enter the Painted Ladies (real people live there), but you can get a great view and a photo of your own from the east-facing hillside of Alamo Square across the street.
Tumblr media
Palace of Fine Art
Local architect Bernard Maybeck's pièce de résistance, this Greco-Roman rotunda is one of the only surviving structures from the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition.
You will feel like you have stepped onto a movie set watching the swans skim across the reflections of the Greco-Roman columns and rotunda of the Palace of Fine Arts. Originally constructed of wood and burlap for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exhibition, the structures were so beloved they were preserved and rebuilt in the 1960s. Bonus: The Palace is an easy, descending walk from the also-picturesque Lyon Street Steps.
Tumblr media
We took a ferry to get a view of Alcatraz, we were unable get tickets. All sold out. Alcatraz is a small island was once a fort, a military prison, and a maximum security federal penitentiary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We grabbed a bite to eat in Little Italy: Nestled between Fisherman's Wharf and Chinatown is a neighborhood known as North Beach. The neighborhood is San Francisco's “Little Italy,”.

The San Francisco cable car system is the world's last manually operated cable car system and an icon of the city of San Francisco

We did not make it to the redwood forest, I do recommend you add this to your trip!
