¿Qué me gusta o no me gusta? Por qué.
¿Qué emoción me genera?
Tina Turner
Incomodidad

Thursdays 2pm-3pm EST 11pm-12pm PDT 7pm-8pm BST bombshellradio.com stereoembersmagazine.com Stereo Embers Magazine #StereoEmbers, #podcast, #RadioShow, #AlexGreen, #Nowplaying, #BombshellRadio, #StereoEmbersThePodcast Repeats Fridays 1am EST and Sundays 11am EST "Natural Magick" Formed in the mid '90s in London, Kula Shaker emerged as one of the most dynamic and engaging musical acts around. Mixing psychedelia with traditional Indian music and pop, Kula Shaker tore it up right out of the gate, with their debut album K hitting #1 and making them immediate superstars. Over the course of their career they played Glastonbury, T in the Park, the V Festival, and they supported Oasis at their legendary Knebworth shows. Singer Crispian Mills is the grandson of the Academy Award Winning actor Sir John Mills and the son of director Roy Boulting and actress Hayley Mills, who you might remember from the 1961 film The Parent Trap. Mills got into ancient Sanskrit texts as a young man and carried their wisdom into his adulthood. He also got into psych music as well as The Doors. He's played with X-Ray Spex and appeared on the Prodigy's The Fat Of The Land album and when Kula Shaker were on hiatus, he played in a band called The Jeevas. Also, he's a writer and director; he wrote and helmed the Simon Pegg film A Fantastic Fear Of Everything and has other projects in the works. With Kula Shaker he's put out six marvelous albums, including K, Pilgrim's Progress, 1st Congregational Church of Eternal Love and Hugs and their brand new one, Natural Magick. A riveting return to form, Natural Magick finds the original Kula Shaker lineup reunited and the results are stunning--this album is an energetic blast of psych pop redolent with rich hooks, textured instrumentation and melodies galore. Milano, torna il Festival della Peste!
Tumblr media
Read the full article

2021 IFFBoston Part 4
Last week was the kick off of virtual 2021 Independent Film Festival Boston. I’ll be covering the festival (which I’m an alumni of and a big fan of), as it continues to Sun. May 16, periodically over the next week. Check out Part 1 here, Part 2 here and Part 3 here.
Thurs. May 13:
Marvelous and the Black Hole is a coming of age comedy about magic, featuring Rhea Perlman. Alas I didn’t catch it.
Tumblr media
Miss Poly Styrene
Only a day after I caught the music doc The Sparks Brothers, there’s another music doc. Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliche documents punk singer Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex and it’s co-directed by her daughter. I can’t say I was that familiar with them before this doc. Although, they were a part of the Rock Against Racism concert, which was documented in last year’s White Riot (see my review here). The band fell in with the British punk movement of that era, but I actually thought they were more like the Blondie than the Sex Pistols. The doc is co-directed by Styrene’s daughter Celeste Bell, who narrates and is seen re-visiting many of Styrene’s noteworthy locations. Styrene (who died in 2011 at age 53 of breast cancer) was bi-racial and used her music to rail against inequality. But there was a complexity to this doc in that its not so much an objective portrait of Styrne, but really about a daughter trying to understand her mother, who suffered from bi-polar disorder while Bell was young, didn’t have the best relationship with, but re-connected later in life. Its almost as if this doc is Bell working through some issues and coming to peace about her mother. There are a number of interviewees (her own bandmates and members of The Raincoats, Sonic Youth, Bikini Kill and more) who are heard but not seen over archival footage. Still digesting this as its very different than other docs that hit you with an immediate reaction after viewing.
Fri. May 14:
Tumblr media
Shelby Duclos and Tyson Brown
First Date is a coming of age comedy about a teen’s first date gone awry. Shy teen Mike gets the chance to take girl-next-door Kelsey out, but he needs a car. After getting conned into buying a ‘65 Chrysler the whole night spirals out of control between criminals, cops and strangers who want the car. When I read the program notes about this film, I was intrigued. It had been a while since we had something like this type of movie, where a series of misadventures occur over the course of one night. The problem with this was that it was trying WAY too hard. It was aspiring to be a Quentin Tarantino mixture of crime and comedy...and failed. The program referred to it as “Superbad meets True Romance”. To tell you the truth this wasn’t even as good as the 1991 teen movie Mystery Date (the one where Ethan Hawke takes a girl out and finds himself dealing with criminals who think he’s the older brother). After Pulp Fiction, there were a ton of Tarantino rip-offs. Most were bad but every once in a while you had something like Go, which was highly influenced by Tarantino, but felt fresh and original. I had hoped First Date would be in that vein, but it was a major letdown.
Next: There’s some big ones coming up at the fest in the last few days.

Today we remember the passing of Poly Styrene who Died: April 25, 2011 in Sussex, United Kingdom
Marianne Joan Elliott-Said (3 July 1957 – 25 April 2011), known by the stage name Poly Styrene, was a British musician, singer-songwriter, and frontwoman for the punk rock band X-Ray Spex.
Poly Styrene was born Marianne Joan Elliott-Said in 1957 in Bromley, Kent, and brought up in Brixton, London. Her mother, who raised her alone, was a Scottish-Irish legal secretary. Her father was a Somali-born dock worker, although Poly Styrene used to tell the press that he was a dispossessed Somali aristocrat.
As a teenager, Styrene was a hippie. When she was 15 she ran away from home with £3 in her pocket, and hitchhiked from one music festival to another, staying at hippie crash pads. Thinking of this as a challenge to survive, her adventure ended when she stepped on a rusty nail while bathing in a stream and had to be treated for septicaemia.
Having been 'an itinerant traveller, alternative fashion designer and a failed pop-reggae singer', she saw the Sex Pistols perform at the Pier Pavilion Hastings on her nineteenth birthday, 3 July 1976, and decided to form the punk band X-Ray Spex. Poly Styrene, a name she chose from the 'Yellow Pages' when she was 'looking for a name of the time, something plastic.' She was described by Billboard as the "archetype for the modern-day feminist punk"; because she wore dental braces, rebelled against the archetypal female sex object of the 1970s, sported a gaudy Dayglo wardrobe, and was of mixed race. She was "one of the least conventional frontpersons in rock history, male or female". They launched their debut single in 1977.
She made a guest appearance at the 2008 30th anniversary concert of Rock Against Racism in Victoria Park, London, performing "Oh Bondage Up Yours!" with guest musicians Drew McConnell (of Babyshambles and Helsinki) and 'Flash' David Wright playing saxophone. That same year, she dueted with Goldblade's John Robb on a remix of Goldblade's "City of Christmas Ghosts".
In March 2009, Styrene joined other members of PRS for Music in criticising Google for allegedly not paying a fair share of royalties to musicians. This followed Google's removal of millions of videos from YouTube because of a royalties dispute with the organisation.
NME.com announced on 29 October 2010 that Poly Styrene was to release a solo album titled Generation Indigo, produced by Martin Glover (aka Youth from Killing Joke), in March 2011. She released a free download of "Black Christmas" in November 2010. Inspired by a Los Angeles killing spree of a man dressed as Santa Claus, "Black Christmas" was written in collaboration with her daughter, Celeste.
Styrene announced "Virtual Boyfriend" as the first single from the new album Generation Indigo via Spinner Music, as well as the launch of her new website. "Virtual Boyfriend" was released on 21 March 2011, and featured an animated promotional video directed by Ben Wheele. Generation Indigo was released on 28 March 2011, via Future Noise Music. The album received critical acclaim, including a perfect 10 out of 10 score in Artrocker magazine, and 8 out of 10 in The Daily Telegraph newspaper. Generation Indigo was also chosen as Album of the Day on UK radio station BBC 6 Music. It was released in the US on 24 April 2011, the day before her death.

She died of metastatic breast cancer on 25 April 2011, at the age of 53.

De Algemene Verwarring #50 - 22 May 2021
The fiftieth episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Saturday May 22 2021, and you can listen to it by clicking on the Mixcloud widget below. And if that does not work, here’s the direct link to the Mixcloud page:
https://www.mixcloud.com/MedialabKortrijk/radio-sinksen-de-algemene-verwarring-50-zaterdag-22-mei-22u-00u
De Algemene Verwarring #50 was actually live on Sinksen Radio by Quindo on Saturday evening from 10pm to 00pm. It was part of the Sinksen Radio: Quindo had the possibility to broadcast on 92.2FM radio as part if the Sinksen Fest in hometown Kortrijk, a three day festival that due to to usual reasons wasn’t a real fest like it used to be. Anyway, I was part of this and it was episode 50, so this is a two hour long party edition, it’s music to dance to and there’s nothing else spectacular about it. No 17 minutes noise tracks and I’m not even talking a lot so there’s really nothing but advantages about this episode.
Pictured below are Ramones, the best punk band in the world. And that is all I have to say about it. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!
