What impact did online gaming have on society?

Any game that can be played over the Internet or a computer network is considered to be online gaming. The majority of the time, it refers to online multiplayer video games that include people from all over the globe. Online gambling via a poker room or casino can also be referred to as online gaming (Schurman 2022). Online gaming is growing in popularity for a variety of reasons. The development of gaming industry has attracted many teenagers and adults to view gaming as their necessities instead of a game that they play during their free time. In this blog, we will discover the cons and pros of the impact that gaming brings to the society.
To begin, gaming is actually an opportunity for young people to practice communication, improve thinking skills and conflict resolution skills. Even first-person shooting video games, which might not be suitable for young players or those under 18, teach teamwork, tolerance, and scenario-based learning. Most games involve strategy to comprehend and then comply with the rules. Online games may contribute in the development of cooperation, concentration, communication, commitment, leadership and problem-solving abilities, according to the Australian Office of the eSafety Commissioner, Think U Know UK, and the NZ organization Netsafe (The benefits of playing online games n.d). As stated, games may improve one’s thinking skills as it needs users to be aware of the environment, pay attention to detail, able to solve problems and to have backup plans as well as literacy.
Online gaming is often stereotyped as an isolated game, but it is actually more sociable than people realise. During the pandemic, people have found myriad ways to re-create-in-person socialization opportunities within video games, embracing the freedom of not being bound by geography or physical capabilities. Studies have found that playing video games can lead to more prosocial behaviors which is a behaviour that is positive, helpful, and aimed toward social acceptance (Wiederhold 2021). The shared experiences that social games provide can result in young people who are more inclined to help one another, in both online and real-world settings. In addition, social video games can increase the player's exposure to people from different regions and cultures. This is beneficial during a time when we are not able to socialize in school or to travel.
Although video games are recognized to offer certain advantages, as those described above, when they are used excessively, they may also have downsides. There are several possible risks associated with excessive gaming. Recent advancements have made it possible for gamers to access video games at any time and nearly anyplace, provided they have a play station portable console with them. Due to this, more time has been spent playing games, which might lead to addiction and an internet gaming disorder, associated with sleep loss, insomnia, and irregular circadian rhythms (Heiden, Braun, Muller & Egloff 2019).
In addition, a significant number of scientific research have found that regular exposure to violent video games raises the likelihood of aggressive behavior (Heiden, Braun, Muller & Egloff 2019). Children get normalised to violence as a result of this exposure, leading them to assume that the world is actually meaner and scarier than they actually are. It is frequently claimed that these ideas are difficult to overcome in later years. Kids start to believe that violence, as it is shown in the games, is typical behavior as a result.
The concept of violence in video games may be comparable to that of domestic abuse, where children exposed to violence may either act violently or become victims because they assume that what they encounter is the norm. The rise of these ideas in gamers has the potential to turn them violent and aggressive in the future.
To conclude, online gaming can bring both positive and negative impacts on the society. Users must control the amount of time and content of game they play. Always keep in mind in separating the gaming world from the real world so that addiction and violence could be reduced.

Online gaming and its impact on society.
The gaming industry has been growing over the past years. It is portrayed as an evolution of digitized third places, further confusing boundaries among social media platforms and social networking sites (Burroughs, 2014). There are several concepts introduced in types and forms of play.

Firstly, Caillois (1961) introduced the concept of Ludus & paidia, which translates to 'rules' and 'freedom,' respectively. Huizinga (1938), on the other hand, introduced the concepts Agon, Alea, Mimicry, and Ilinx.
Those concepts translate to 'Competition,' 'Chance,' 'Simulation,' and 'Vertigo,' respectively.
The concept of 'Agon' is applied to games that require training, techniques, and discipline. For instance, games such as Dota and Plant VS Zombies requires the Agon concept of play.
'Alea,' on the other hand, is where the effort, ability, and expertise are dismissed, and the 'victory is an outcome of fate instead of triumph over an opponent. For instance, simple games such as poker and football fit Alea's description.
'Mimicry' is where players escape themselves and transforms into 'illusory characters.' Games such as World of Warcraft and The Sims must fit into the description.
Finally, 'Ilinx' is a play formed by the production of vertigo or disorientation. Games such as Angry Birds and Stormland with Occulus Rift are examples of the Ilinx form of play.
Online gaming is often looked down upon and is considered 'useless,' 'a waste of time', and not beneficial to society. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought many people together to play games, especially online games.

For instance, games such as Among Us and Animal Crossing were famous during the pandemic's lockdown. The game Among Us had 100 million downloads by people, and it still holds the record as the most downloaded game. On the other hand, the game Animal Crossing rose in popularity and secured Nintendo Switch revenues (Lufkin, 2020).
This pandemic caused the World Health Organization (WHO) to shift its perspective on online gaming; on which at first, they considered online gaming as harmful and addictive, and changed their stance by praising online gaming as beneficial and having a positive impact on stress management (Kriz, 2020, p. 405).
Although online gaming has pros in forming communities, building relationships, and helping stress management, it has cons too.

Firstly, online gaming is prone to create an environment for harassment. This is due to online gaming is often preferred by males. According to a report, 93% of women had to hide their gender identity as they experienced sexual harassment online (Sacco, 2022). This issue, therefore, causes online gaming to be known as a toxic place.
Next, online gaming can lead to addiction. This addiction can affect one's health too—for instance, tiredness and sleep deprivation. According to a report, about 60 million people suffer from game addiction (Hopkins, 2022). This reflects what WHO said before they changed their perspective on gaming.
Gaming is fun if your circle if you have the right circle.

Conclusion
To conclude, many types and forms of play are produced due to different gaming content. Pros and cons should also be highlighted when it comes to social gaming. Hence, one should be careful when indulging in social gaming as it is not everyone's cup of tea.

Social Gaming: Play vs Monetization

With the help of digital communities, the gaming communities have expanded into expansive central hubs for players worldwide to connect, collaborate and compete within games (Goncalves et al. 2023). However, it can be seen in recent years that there has been a shift within the gaming community. The gaming community's emphasis on play and camaraderie has started to become overshadowed by the growing trend of monetization of games. This change poses intriguing questions about the further development of the gaming community along with the impact of commercial interests.
In the beginning, Goncalves et al. (2023) state that the main role of gaming communities is for players to enjoy games together for entertainment purposes. From online forums to interactive game sessions, players are able to experience fictional worlds, complete missions in games and even forge friendships with each other. The rise of monetization in games, however, has created a new trend within the communities, disrupting the usual dynamics where players come together for the pure reason of enjoying games together.
THE EFFECTS OF MONETIZED GAMES
One of the prominent reasons for the shift in social gaming is the popularity of microtransactions and in-game purchases that can be made. Gaming communities are becoming increasingly interconnected with the economic structure of the games. Various virtual currencies, cosmetic skins, and premium items that are being monetized have created a world where the act of playing and gaming is now tied to the act of making financial transactions using real money. According to Markopoulos (2018), the game Clash of Clans uses four types of in-game currencies Gold, Elixir, Dark and Gems, where Gems are the most valuable but can only be purchased with real money. As some players wish to progress faster in the game and level up, they purchase Gems with their real-world money (Markopoulos 2018). As a result, these monetized features have created a dichotomy within the gaming communities, with some players embracing these microtransaction features while other believe that it disrupts the play of the game.
Competitive gaming, better known as e-sports, has also played a part in the monetization of games. Although e-sports has provided a platform for players to showcase their skills and talents in the game and even garner a huge following, the commercialization of these competitions have added a business aspect of it to gaming communities. According to Steinkuehler (2020), sponsorships, advertising deals and prize pools that can cost up to millions have turned e-sports into a profitable industry for businessmen and investors. However, this business model has now blurred the lines between passionate play and profit-driven motives for players and gaming companies alike. Sun (2017) states that the game League of Legends holds the World Championship, one of the biggest e-sports competitions, where the top 16 teams around the world will compete for the massive and enticing prize pool. In 2016, the prize pool for the Worlds Championship was a grand total of $5, 070, 000 (Sun 2017). Due to these changes, there have been debates in the gaming community on the authenticity and purity of e-sports due to commercial influences.

Furthermore, live streaming has also reshaped the dynamics of the gaming communities. According to Johnson (2019), Twitch, a streaming platform, has given rise to content creators who monetize their gameplay through donations, subscriptions and sponsorships. This has allowed players to turn their passion into a substantial profession, it has also changed the communal nature of gaming. The reason for this is that the simple joy of playing games may no longer be the sole reason for players to game, as the aspect of needing to entertain an audience in order to generate revenue now comes into play (Johnson 2019). This then turns the act of playing and gaming into a test of good performance rather than personal enjoyment of the game.
THE POSITIVES OF MONETIZED GAMES
Although monetization has brought new changes and challenges to the gaming communities, it is also essential to recognize that it has brought some positive changes to gaming communities. The financial success of the gaming industry has allowed for higher investments in game development (Ten Pixel Studio 2022). This results in improved quality of games, allowing players to immerse themselves better in games. Moreover, the rising popularity of e-sports has elevated gaming into mainstream entertainment. According to Ponda (2019), e-sports has aided the gaming community in gaining recognition and massive revenue.

In conclusion, the monetization of games has undeniably changed the gaming community, bringing about both positive and negative ones. Thus, striking a balance must be done to ensure that gaming communities can continue to thrive while being able to develop into greater entertainment.

Week 9 : The World of Games
To play a game is to attempt to achieve a specific state of affairs (Suits, 1978). Players engage in an artificial conflict , defined by rules, that result in a quantifiable outcome (Salen & Zimmerman, 2003).
Video games have been evolving since 1980 with the introduction of arcade games. An arcade game is a coin-operated game designed for play at an amusement arcade (Meriam Webster , 2023). Arcade games such as space invaders and Pac man were popular in the 1980's (Jones, 2023). In the 1990's the idea of local multi-player gaming became popular. This introduced online multiplayer gaming, in 1988 the first multiplayer computer games was released with up to 16 players (Larch, 2023). This relied on the introduction of networked computing technologies.

Games communities are an important aspect of gaming , following current technology advancements. A gaming community refers to a group of people who come together to share their interest for playing games. The purpose for gaming communities is to provide support among gamers (Meta Engine, 2023). Games communities have influenced social games. Social games are online games that adapt your friendship ties for play purpose , while accommodating your daily routines (Jarvien, 2011). Social games exploded in late 2000's - earl 2010's with the purpose of networking. Games platforms include consoles e.g. Xbox, PlayStation & Nintendo and streaming platforms such as Twitch, YouTube gaming and Facebook gaming. Streaming platforms are often live, providing content creators with profit, leading to a career.

Indie games are an important factor in the games industry. Indie games are popular in Melbourne, every year in November Melbourne hosts ' Melbourne international games week. Bringing together a number of different events of varying shape and size related to the video game field. The independent game festivals presents experimental videogames made by Australian students, artists and hobbyist (igf, 2023). In the first half of 2010 , the Melbourne industry shifted by necessity to an almost exclusively indie industry, following the closure of nearly every large studio in the country (FP, 2023). Melbourne have an overproduction of game making activity. The number of people able and eager to create video fames has outgrown what the local industry is able to commodify.

People with similar interests can meet and connect in gaming communities, which can act as a place for them to do so. Players typically join groups that share their interests, philosophies, and ways of playing the game, which is significant for both individuals and clans because players' incentives for gaming vary According to (Sun, Williams & Li 2021, p. 2). Friendships and in certain situations even love relationships might result from this. Not only about relationships, the other think of gaming community also can lead people to get knowledge and support from other gamers. However, some gaming communities can degenerate into hostile places where harassing or bullying online behavior occurs. This is especially true for games with intense competition, when participants may become too focused on winning and engage in dishonest or violent behavior towards others.

Through the use of social media platforms or gaming networks, players in social games can interact with one another, form alliances, and engage in competitive play. Social gaming's social component can be expressed in a number of ways, including forums, chat rooms, shared leaderboards, and texting. In addition, users may use social media to interact with other players and encourage their friends to play the game, for example like Minecraft, Candy Crush, Among us & Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Online gaming can use a lot of different devices like mobile phone, pc, play stations, nintendo or Wii.

Gaming community and online gaming also have a connection with Live streaming. Live streaming is a real-time video or audio feed that is transmitted through the internet to a viewer or listener who is participating in the streaming of the content in the process known as live streaming. Due to the fact that it facilitates in-the-moment communication between users and content producers, it has become more and more popular in recent years with the rise of social media platforms. In other case some viewers love watching streamers not just for the content of the show but also for the personality of the streamer themselves because 70% of Twitch streams play a variety of games that are not exclusive to a genre (Gandhi, Cook, LaMastra & et al 2021, p. 2). Lots of platforms can be used for streaming like Twitch, Facebook, Instagram  or Youtube and this all platforms being the most used by the viewers.

The hidden benefit of video games: strengthening community through online gaming
What words do you usually think of when you hear the word ‘gamers’?
Stereotypically, I’d assume you’d think of something like nerds, geeks, losers, dorks. But many of us know, gaming culture is so much more than that.

JP Gee referenced in Lucinda Saldanha et al states that ‘more and more people are coming together around the shared interest of games’ resulting in emerging ‘communities with specific characteristics and dynamics’ (2023).
The groups themselves are incredibly diverse and varied in size, purposes and interests. This week’s core reading states that ‘the cultural, economic, and political values of the videogame field are neither homogeneous nor universal, but instead represent a vast range of practices, communities, aesthetics and intentions (Keogh, 2021).
So let’s explore some of these! We will focus on three specific ways communities are formed through gaming:

1.     Gaming with friends and making friends through games
The lecture states gaming communities are also social communities. Many individuals will play games with their friends who they know in real life, whilst also being introduced to their friends online. This results to larger circles of friendships and new people regularly meeting each other on digital platforms.
You don’t have to have a mutual friend to meet new people though. Some gamers will meet players from the other edge of the globe as they play the same game, meaning their circles can be worldwide!

2.     Competitive gaming
There is also competitive gaming, also known as eSports, which is when groups of people gather to play games against each other, usually in tournament style competitions. This week’s lecture explains this is ‘enormous and lucrative industry’. Statista supports this claim, estimating of the value of the global eSports market to be over 1.38 billion US dollars!
3.     Streaming communities
Streaming is also a valued part of gaming culture, where gamers will stream their games (usually live) to chat, interact and connect with each other. By creating their own entertainment, communities are formed through shared love of games and viewers relating to the experience of streamers and fellow viewers.
This is a video which challenges gamer stereotypes and celebrates the positives of social gaming.
