stories i om-nom-nom'd :: march 2024 (week 4)
Welcome to a new thing I wanna try and do to keep some form of writing exercise while I'm lowkey kinda struggling to bang stories out (pun kinda intended). Here I'm just gonna talk abt what I've been reading and watching and playing for the past week and rambling on what I think about them. Summaries for the story either in full or the story so far will be included, and that's the only form of "spoiler warning" I'm gonna give.
Everything below the cut.
movies
Dual (2022)
Tumblr media
Considering my interpretation of how the fight between Sarah and her Double went down, I'm in so much pain for her. She already escaped her grayscale dreary life and now she has to live in it again to keep up appearances? She deserves to live, dammit.
Full summary + rant/review here
books
Double Cross by Campbell Thompson
I'm only a chapter in and let me just say right now I love the introduction of Verity and how she really went by her own rules and swiped a watch from a handsy sleazy customer of Eighth Circle. And here we also have an introduction to Thomas Cross that's every bit intimidating as he found the pricey lil trinket she swiped and we end the chapter with him bringing her into his office. 🫢 Now see this is how I know there's smth wrong w me because that last scene got the butterflies going with a vengeance fully knowing that Thomas Cross looks like this:

games
Undercover: Blood Bonds
Undercover: Blood Bonds is a time-management game from GameHouse under their Original Stories line, and requires either a GHOS subscription (under $100/year for full access to all 60+ games) to play the full game, or full payment of the single game (about $10/game), or each level will be locked behind an unskippable ad that's at most 60secs long. I'm playing with the GHOS subscription.
The story I've unlocked so far is that we follow the journey of Vera, a journalist that's gone undercover as bar staff in a nightclub to find out what's happened to her sister Lilly. In a flashback, we get to see that what kicked off the events of the game was that Vera went home to her shared apartment with her sister, only to be greeted with everything turned upside down in an obvious struggle, and a pool of blood on the floor.
Delicious: True Love
Delicious: True Love is another story in the GHOS collection, and tells the story of Emily Napoli, going on adventures and crossing continents to reunite with her long lost love Jean-Paul. Right now she's on a train to Paris with her luggage having made it there before her so she's earning her keep there by helping out in the restaurant.
I've been playing the spin-off "alternate timeline" version of the story called "Delicious World" for a few years on and off, and I've enjoyed the hijinks she's gotten up to so far there with all the twists and turns and antics she's gotten up to with her eventual hubby Patrick. And considering I've got the time due to being in the job hunting phase, I figured 'why not?' and I'd play through the original story.
Delicious World
Speaking of the alternate timeline story, I'm also playing through this game this week, as I have been for the last few weeks. I'm currently in Season 2 Episode 3 where Emily's rekindled her romance with Jean-Paul and ngl they're being quite adorable with their constant kissies and sneaking off to his trailer. We also have a cute lil reveal that her bestie Frank's got a bit of a fling going on with her Rising Chef competitor Monet.
Top that off with Emily having some insecurities popping up because she saw JP's phone lighting up with the name of another celebrity chef Shivani Khurana, her competitor (and current rival) Sarah's older sister. And what's got her stomach in knots is that some time ago, there was a rumor that Shivani and JP had a thing for each other. 🫢☹️
Hello Kitty Island Adventure
I've played through all the quests available under "The Island Mystery" and so far all I got is that the Little TwinStars have this master plan going on that they don't wanna share with the class, and they're acutely aware of exactly how much more we have to do so that we can fully heal the Island Spirit that I have jokingly nicknamed Loki because she's stuck in the heart of a tree.
Ohh and there was a quip from Badtz-Maru about us all being locked in a time loop, so if Sanrio and Sunblink are trying to beat the "Loki crossover" allegations (that are literally just coming from me in the name of jokes and vibes), they're not doing the best job at it.
Disney Dreamlight Valley
Aaaaah, Dreamlight Valley…the game that inspired a whole new story universe (coming to you soon on the writing/main blog), I've also played through all the story quests for this one and I'm chomping at the bit waiting for the new releases for Spring and Summer.
There's definitely something to look out for with Skull Rock, considering that the final quest of Act 1 after facing off and reconciling with The Forgotten centers around the entrance way into said rock. And the friendship quests for The Forgotten mention it twice. And with the way they built it up, I'm hoping that it's gonna be more than just another home for another character. Like idk…maybe a portal? To Neverland? Or Pixie Hollow? Maybe if we get Hook he'll look and sound a bit more like…him?

youtube channels that got my watch hours
Johnniibeanasmr
I don't vibe with a lot of male ASMR channels mostly bc they all have an overly gimicky feel to them, but I vibe w this one a lot. The videos have a cozy atmosphere to them and he's got a soft relaxing whisper that can lull me to sleep. The one that's made it to my "sleepies" playlist is this spider web one:
TheoryVerse
MatPat's theory channels have been with their new hosts for a few weeks now, and personally I think they're doing a great job with their own domains so far. Even though some snarky dude that'll hiss when their skin touches the sunlight and their 3 chest hairs is consistently in my comment replies tryna tell me otherwise (bitch touch grass, honestly).
Anyways, I've still got a good handful of new theories to binge but I'll give some bits that I picked up from the batch that I watched the week before.
Amy Marie validated that I'm already using a pretty good razor for my shaving shenanigans, but there's a potentially better one that I'll probs look into one of these days. She also showed that ultimately what makes the biggest difference is prep and aftercare of the skin, so that's gonna be something I gotta add to the routine.
youtube
Santi had me adding "Wendy's hot chicken sandwich" to my list of foods to try. Probs gonna do that to kick off my unplanned vacation of unemployment.
youtube
Lee pretty much validated my frustration over Oogway and his insistence of going "I'm not gonna tell you the secret la dee da" because apparently the secret to becoming the greatest warrior of all was inside you all along. And the blind following of Shifu and the ongoing cycle of shoddy mentorship goes on and on 🤦🏻‍♀️
youtube
As for Game Theory and its new host Tom, I've actually been able to watch 2 of his theories, and basically he validated my instinctual doubts on the 'helpful' Ollie, as well as walked me through the KinitoPet ARG. Don't trust those animated clipart assistants, kids. Especially this one because I'm not kidding, this game fucking doxxes you.

Quiet on Set Ep5: Breaking the Silence
All cards on the table, I'm dreading this more than looking forward to it because watching the first four episodes broke me, and I'm still hurting for the people whose childhoods and innocence were taken from them in the name of money and power. But the creation of the first few episodes empowered another former Nickelodeon talent to come forward, and we're about to hear a whole new account of the physical, psychological, mental, and emotional horrors that went on in those studios.
Double Cross by Campbell Thompson
Diving back into this story and hopefully get through halfway (or maybe even the whole book).

That's all I got for this week. Let's see what this next week brings I guess 👀🫡

Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 500ml bottle from Palestinian Nabali Olives via Equal Exchange
Tumblr media
prolonged pretentious food blog-esque review under the cut:
I once read in a book or a magazine or somewhere that of all the grocery items you should splurge on, a good olive oil is an investment. It will last a while even in a busy kitchen, and its flavor will transform those veggies and bread you got on sale.
But the Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil sold on Equal Exchange is actually a reasonable price. $85 for 6 bottles breaks down to just over $14 a bottle. With inflation especially, I'm used to spending $16+ for olive oil in slightly bigger bottles (750ml vs 500ml) from companies like California Olive Ranch.
The product is made of Nabali olives indigenous to Palestine, and its liqueur on a white plate is a pale gold hue reminiscent of honey. I'm used to more, well, "olive" green oils. Even with my sinuses acting up right now, I detect a familiar aroma upon cracking the bottle.
Here's the thing: I could eat olive oil with plain, crusty bread for hours. I'm weird about olive oil. It tastes like salt without salt added. Maybe it's because I actually did have to do that a lot of the time as a kid. Wheat reaches its peak in the oven, olives reach their peak in the press. Then they marry on your palate.
I often find myself chasing the particular taste of a particular olive oil i enjoyed growing up. In the supermarket, oils are labeled "mild" "smooth" "robust", but not only can I not translate those into a taste, the mouth-memory I have of that oil isn't able to be categorized by words. Maybe I remember it more like the hopping line on an EKG's slippery paper or a polygraph test.
When you smell olive oil, it's saying hello, and you're introduced to the first jump on the chart by being reminded of honeysuckle or salty butter or even black tea, or thousands of other things (it will come from your own memories, after all). The Equal Exchange Extra Virgin Olive Oil's aroma did remind me of tea, but also avocado, but the kind you might find in a boba tea. Rich and subtly sweet.
I had warmed up some canned chicken soup and splashed the oil on top, and it added richness, mingling well with the sharp cheddar cheese I also crumbled on top. I only had brown bread and a single English muffin in the house, and they had to be toasted, but the oil soaked somewhat into the dense multigrain bread. It may be thinner than olive oils I'm used to.
My multigrain bread and soup were great, but to really test the oil, I did toast my single English muffin with its tomorrow expiration date and threw its weird cardboard bed into the recycling. I poured the oil onto the plate and dipped.
On its own, it's peppery. It tastes so similar to that flavor I remember, and then its EKG dips and hops again with a spark of bitter lemon rind and finishes creamy. It's such a unique oil.
Per Canaan Palestine, another place you can buy the country's homegrown oil, the Nabali olive's name "refers to the ancient Canaanite city of Napoli known today as the thriving Palestinian city of Nablus. This variety is the mother of the Arbequina olive variety well known in Spain and Italy." What history does this tiny fruit hold? Doubtless Biblical figures, apocryphal or real, held it in their hands, heard the wind rustling the leaves in its trees.
But olive trees are not safe in Palestine. Not one being, from birth to elderly, is safe in Palestine. It's sobering to buy products, like my green and yellow (olive colors!) kufiya with its olive-leaf shaped embroidery, or these magnificent oils, when I'm not sure the artisans or farmers or anyone they love will live another five minutes, let alone a day. The oils arrived at my house in record time after I purchased them, but the people of Palestine are killed trying to find food for their families, or return with food to find said families as martyrs.
I should have found this delicious oil under better circumstances. I should have been dreaming of going on a tour to different olive farms, the way I could in European countries where the relatives of this olive grow, just to sample and buy souvenirs. What friends would I make on a trip like that? What cats would I pet? I would be a tourist, tasting of the culture the way I taste this oil. Commerce is not activism when the stakes are this impossibly high.
I am fortunate to have bread in my house and a family un-martyred, living in a country that currently bankrolls the annihilation of an entire people as well as their history, culture, and progress. I can't out-spend the United States on weaponry by well-intentioned patronage. I can only be a physical body to throw against the machine of premeditated genocide at every opportunity I have, and lift up the voices of those experiencing this nightmare.
I have already given one bottle to my housemate, and one will go to another when he gets home, and once I run out of relatives I still speak to, I might go downstairs to the neighbors to give them some. At which point I will probably still have another bottle to offer, and although my friends would be a good bet, I think a better idea would be crossing the street, taking an opportunity to meet people I haven't spoken to, and offering them a chance to taste a country their televisions and newspapers only tell lies about.

Week 10: Social Media Conflict and Governance
Tumblr media
The notion of social media governance presented here correlates with the principles outlined in corporate governance theory, which advocates for a structured framework. Effective utilization of social media for communication purposes necessitates various resources, including knowledgeable personnel, state-of-the-art equipment, adequate funding, and a supportive corporate culture and structure (Linke, Zerfass & Fink, 2013). The concept of the public interest has long served as the cornerstone for evaluating media management and performance. In the realm of traditional media governance, policymakers have relied on it to shape and assess policies, while professionals such as journalists have considered it a measure of their professionalism. Furthermore, social justice organizations have utilized the public interest as a tool for evaluating media performance and advocating on behalf of the broader public. Media governance encompasses a broader scope than media regulation and policy, encompassing the regulatory discussions, actions, and outcomes that occur both within and outside the state (Napoli, 2014).
Tumblr media
Online harassment, also known as cyberbullying, entails the deliberate use of information and communication technologies by individuals or groups to inflict harm on others. It encompasses various forms of abusive behavior, such as online threats, humiliation, and defamation, including expressions of discrimination based on factors like race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability. Additionally, it encompasses unwanted online sexual conduct, such as cyberstalking and image-based sexual abuse (Durham University, n.d.). Online harassment, or cyberbullying, is a pervasive and distressing issue that exploits technology to target and harm individuals. It manifests in different ways, including sending unsolicited or threatening emails, enlisting others to participate in the harassment, spreading false information and rumors through social media platforms, and engaging in derogatory online commentary to tarnish someone's reputation (Government of Canada, 2020).
Tumblr media
The consequences of online harassment extend beyond immediate emotional distress and can negatively impact an individual's well-being, their ability to engage and interact in digital environments, and their overall sense of safety and privacy (Haslop, O'Rourke & Southern, 2021). This phenomenon goes by various names, such as cyber harassment, cyberbullying, trolling, and flaming, with some terms used interchangeably and others losing their specific meaning. At PEN America, we prefer the terms "online harassment" or "online abuse," which we define as the widespread or severe targeting of individuals or groups through harmful behavior online. The severity of online abuse is evident in the fact that even a single incident, such as a death threat or the public disclosure of personal information, can have significant consequences. Its pervasiveness is seen in the cumulative effect of a steady stream of incidents or a coordinated campaign of harassment. Online harassment encompasses multiple platforms, including email, social media platforms (such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok), messaging apps (such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp), blogging platforms (such as Medium, Tumblr, and WordPress), and comment sections on various digital media platforms, personal blogs, YouTube pages, and Amazon book reviews.
Tumblr media
Perpetrators of online harassment aim to make their victims feel unsafe, humiliated, scared, or emotionally distressed. Their actions may include public embarrassment, sexual harassment, threats, doxing, bullying, offensive behavior, or other forms of harassment. In cases involving domestic violence or stalking, the abuser may employ these tactics to maintain power and control over their victim. If you find yourself a target of cyberstalking or online harassment, it is crucial to take steps to protect yourself.
Tumblr media
Preserve and document all evidence related to the harassment, as it can strengthen your case. Install an email and content filtering system to mitigate the risk of targeted phishing and malware attacks that may compromise your personal information.
Refrain from responding or retaliating, as it may exacerbate the situation and lead to further dissemination of personal information and increased harassment.
Familiarize yourself with the legal definitions and defenses related to cyberstalking and online harassment to better understand your rights and potential courses of action.
Consider tightening your digital footprint and reviewing your public online profiles to minimize the amount of personal information available and reduce the likelihood of it being used against you.
When identifying and addressing cyberstalking, it is important to look for key characteristics such as malicious intent, premeditation, repetitive behavior, and obsession. If you are uncertain about what constitutes online stalking and internet harassment, seeking guidance from an experienced internet harassment lawyer is advisable.

Does Haaland make Man City favourites? Is VAR getting worse?
Tumblr media
With this season's Champions League quarterfinalists now set, our writers answer some of the big questions arising from the round of 16 second legs. With this season's Champions League quarterfinalists now set, our writers answer some of the big questions arising from the round of 16 second legs.    8:00 AM ET This season's Champions League round of 16 is done and dusted with some European heavyweights falling by the wayside like Liverpool, who have reached three finals in the last five years, and a Paris Saint-Germain side featuring Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi. Friday's quarterfinal draw will feature plenty of European heavyweights such as defending champions Real Madrid and recent winners Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are also in the hat along with Portuguese side Benfica, while Serie A has three clubs in the last eight: AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli. Our writers Mark Ogden, Julien Laurens and James Olley answer some of the big questions arising from this round of games. - Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)
What caught your eye from the round-of-16 second legs?
Ogden: The poor standard of refereeing, and VAR, has really stood out during the round of 16, and it is even more noticeable because the Champions League generally operates to a much higher level than the domestic leagues in Europe. Two English teams, Chelsea and Manchester City, have been the biggest beneficiaries of some bewildering decisions, with German sides Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig on the wrong end of them. Chelsea were fortunate to be awarded a penalty during their 2-0 second-leg win against Dortmund when defender Marius Wolf was judged to have handled the ball. Referee Danny Makkelie didn't point to the spot until the VAR suggested a review on the pitchside monitor. Wolf was so close to the ball that he couldn't move out of the way, but Makkelie awarded the penalty when he should have dismissed the VAR review. Leipzig suffered an even heavier blow during their 7-0 defeat at City. VAR once again intervened in a penalty incident, calling on referee Slavko Vincic to review an apparent handball by Benjamin Henrichs. The reality was that Henrichs had his back to Rodri, whose header brushed his arm and fell to a City player without deviating in movement. It was incredibly soft, but once the penalty was awarded, Erling Haaland put City 1-0 ahead. Moments later, Timo Werner was booked, despite being on the receiving end of a foul by Ederson which could have resulted in a red card for the City goalkeeper. Yet VAR did not intervene. Two huge decisions which, had they gone Leipzig's way, could have resulted in a much different outcome. VAR and the referees have to be better in the quarterfinals and beyond.
Editor's Picks
2 Related Laurens: It is probably the most obvious answer (and, I promise, I tried to find something else to be more original) but nothing can beat Haaland's quintuple against RB Leipzig. He might have got six goals had he stayed longer on the pitch, but Pep Guardiola took him off after 63 minutes. The Manchester City striker became only the third man in Champions League history to score five goals in the same game, after Messi and Luiz Adriano, and by becoming the youngest-ever player to reach 30 Champions League goals. For his club, he is now the top scorer in a single season with 39 goals, beating the old record of Tommy Johnson from 1929. Haaland still has as many as 19 more games to play before the end of the season. It is still an amazing achievement; Haaland had eight shots on the night, all on target, scored five goals with an xG (Expected Goals) of less than three. He was so aggressive in the box, so alert, so on it. He looked possessed at times. It was just incredible. Olley: If Graham Potter makes a success of his time at Chelsea, he may well look back on their second leg win over Dortmund as the turning point. Managers often talk about uniting the fans and making their home stadium a difficult place for visiting teams, but in Potter's case he did so in the knowledge this game served as something of a referendum on his management. An unconvincing win over Leeds United a few days earlier had at created a modicum of momentum heading into the game but, make no mistake, defeat against Dortmund would have ramped up the pressure on Potter. Dortmund were depleted -- Karim Adeyemi, Youssoufa Moukoko and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel all missed out injured while Julian Brandt was forced off after just five minutes -- but Chelsea produced a committed and defiant display, overcoming their goal-scoring problems to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge. The players showed they were behind Potter and although it will be some time before the majority of the fans are convinced the former Brighton & Hove Albion boss is the right man to lead them back to former glories, this win buys him time with a Champions League quarterfinal as proof of progress. They surely aren't good enough to lift the trophy in Istanbul, but, then again, most people felt that way before they won in 2012 and 2021... play1:09 Pep's idols: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods ... and Julia Roberts? Pep Guardiola reveals his biggest failure at Manchester City was when his idol Julia Roberts went to visit Manchester United instead of his club.
Now the quarterfinalists are all set; which team is your favourite to lift the trophy in Istanbul?
Laurens: Pep Guardiola can be as sarcastic as he wants about the Champions League and what a failure he is and will always be, even if he wins the competition for the next three years. He can talk about Julia Roberts, Richard Gere or any Hollywood actor as much as he wants. His team are once again the big favourites of this Champions League, and not winning it would be a failure -- again. City have everything, really: the manager, the squad depth, the superstars, the clutch players, the winning mentality, the experience of going far and the motivation of not yet winning it. They should have won it already and they will surely eventually do so. This year is their year. The rest of the field is not at their level, not even Bayern Munich, Napoli or Real Madrid. Time is running out for Kevin De Bruyne, who turns 32 in June. Riyad Mahrez and Kyle Walker are already at that age, while Ikay Gundogan is out of contract this summer. Bernardo Silva could be leaving at the end of the season, too, a year after pushing for a departure. The most important thing is that surely Pep and City have learned from their past mistakes in the Champions League: the 2021 final loss, the semifinal of last season and all the previous quarterfinal disappointments. If they can do that, they will finally be ready to achieve their ultimate aim. play2:29 How good has Victor Osimhen been? Steve Nicol, Craig Burley and Alejandro Moreno offer high praise for the Victor Osimhen after Napoli advance to the next round in the Champions League. Ogden: This may be a case of heart overruling head, but Napoli have been the most exciting team in this season's Champions League and it would be great for the game if Luciano Spalletti can take the club all the way to glory in Istanbul. They certainly have the players, and it's not just about top scorer Victor Osimhen. Kim Min-Jae, Piotr Zielinski, Hirving "Chucky" Lozano and Giovanni Simeone have all had outstanding seasons, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has arguably been the breakthrough star of the 2022-23 Champions League. The big challenge for Napoli, who are nailed on to win Serie A this season for the first time since 1990, is to hold their nerve and play their own game against a European superpower such as Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. If they stick to what has served them so well, Napoli can beat anybody, but the top clubs usually find a way to win the Champions League. We haven't seen a surprise team win the competition since Jose Mourinho's FC Porto in 2004, so maybe this is Napoli's time. Olley: It should, in all probability, be Manchester City but I can't say that a team clearly stands out from the rest at this stage. Mark makes a compelling case for Napoli -- and an 18-point lead at the top of Serie A gives them the chance to do what other clubs can't, which is rest players in the league to keep everyone fully fresh for the latter stages of the Champions League. City have been knocking on the door for years but, even though they thrashed Leipzig in midweek, they have not been anything like their fluid best for much of the season. The jury is out as to whether this Bayern Munich is as strong as previous incarnations -- although we must all take note when club legend Lothar Matthaus says this group may be their best-ever squad. And then we come to the team that mask their own weaknesses and exploit others better than anyone else: Real Madrid. With little conviction, given Napoli's form, City's individuals and Bayern's pedigree, perhaps Real's knowhow can help Carlo Ancelotti trump his rivals once more. play2:35 Nicol: Only thing for Liverpool is they didn't get embarrassed Steve Nicol, Craig Burley and Alejandro Moreno react to Real Madrid beating Liverpool 6-2 on aggregate to advance in the Champions League.
After Haaland's five-goal haul, what's the most impressive individual performance you've seen live in the Champions League?
Olley: Messi scoring all four as Barcelona beat Arsenal 4-1 at Camp Nou in April 2010. Maybe the Gunners made the mistake of taking the lead. At that stage, Arsenal led this quarterfinal tie 4-2 on aggregate but what came next was a true force of nature. Messi took it upon himself to deliver the kind of virtuoso performance that epitomises his glittering career. The first goal was a fierce drive as the ball fell to him on the edge of the box, the second a close-range finish lifted over Manuel Almunia. His hat-trick goal was sublime; sent racing clear, he scooped a left-footed shot over the onrushing Almunia with embarrassing ease, prompting that worshipping celebration from an awe-struck Barcelona crowd. The fourth came with a drop of the shoulder, panicking defenders contorting themselves in ever more desperate shapes, and a shot saved by Almunia but drilled through his legs on the rebound. This was a high-pressure occasion but here was a 22-year-old making the game look so breathtakingly, devastatingly simple. Perhaps Wenger put it best: "He made the impossible possible." The image that lingers in my mind came just after the final whistle. Messi was given the match ball and as Arsenal's players looked crestfallen, Barca supporters stood in disbelief, the little magician at the centre of it all simply spun the ball in his hand wearing a beaming smile, so fresh-faced he looked ready immediately to do it all over again.

It may seem unlikely now, six years on, but at the time the game was billed as a clash between Ronaldo and Atleti's rising star Antoine Griezmann, who was enjoying an outstanding season for Diego Simeone's team. There was genuine belief that Atleti could avenge the Champions League final defeats of 2014 and 2016 against their city rivals, with the France forward inspiring them to the final and outshining Ronaldo in the process. But Ronaldo was having none of that. It seemed as though he was given extra motivation to prove he was still the king of Madrid and he dominated the game. He also recorded two landmarks by netting his 50th goal in the Champions League knockout stages and equalling Messi's record of seven hat tricks in the competition. Laurens: I could pick any moment from Karim Benzema in the knockout phase last season; I was there for all of it. I had never witnessed anything like it before. He scored 10 goals in the six games that he and Real Madrid played on their way to the final at the Stade de France. Read the full article

Wow. Been awhile since I've had to write a post game after a league loss...
Or 245 days to be exact. It was almost 8 months to the day - 8 months and 2 days - since the last league loss vs Spezia (what a stupid fluky loss that was). *it was 249 days when this is finally got posted*
Preamble
I've been sitting on the ratings pretty much since Monday morning and I didn't post them because I was still working on the commentary section I like to write to adjoin the ratings post. Well, I didn't get a chance to finish it until just now. Why?...well, life mostly. Just too busy. Writing here isn't my day job if you can believe it (don't answer that). So, I'm going to do this a little bit different. Same player ratings but I didn't say as much (most of the time) can be found at the bottom.
We all know the final score so let's talk about what happened...
Gameplan
Oh boy, where to start. I know I mentioned some of these things in the Matchday post but they're worth reviewing because what I feared would happen, happened. Here's what I said in-full:
I half seriously pondered in the last post or so (maybe it was the comment section) that I wouldn’t mind seeing Milan show up in a 4-3-1-2 with a Tonali-Bennacer-Pobega midfield and Brahim sitting behind CDK and Giroud up front. I think this would be beneficial on a few levels: (1) it might catch Napoli off-guard and provide no recent history for how to stop Milan getting forward, (2) it gets the best players on the pitch together with Leão and Rebić out, and (3) it provides some tactical options with substitutions being that Milan is short on LWs and CFs at the moment. I don’t know, I like a coach that’s able to throw the curveball sometimes and get the other team off-balanced. I think Pioli could pull this off if he wanted. It’s ok to try something different.
That being said, it’ll probably be the regular 4-2-3-1 but it better not be Saelemaekers and Messias on the wings. Why? Because that would mean Brahim or CDK sits to start the game and I think they both need to be out there.
So let's deal with #1: to catch Napoli off-guard
Pioli's lineup decision DID catch Napoli off guard! There was no way he would have Saelemaekers and Krunic on the wings in a 4-2-3-1...right? Well. Yes. He did. And it worked to some degree. I mean Krunic spent most of his time in the middle of the pitch, so not exactly acting like a LWer, and CDK spent a bulk of his time nowhere near the top of the 18yd box. And Salaemaekers? Well he mostly stayed out on the RW, near the touchline, but that doesn't mean he did a damn thing all game (see Figure 1). The only way this makes sense is if Krunic was actually the CAM and CDK was out on LW but then every single entity I looked at for stats on this game, including the official Serie A lineup, had it wrong.
Tumblr media
So, while this lineup did surprise Napoli, I mean Milan was on the front foot for most of the first half, it wasn't the most finesse group out there to complete the buildup with quality finishing. Speaking of...
Ok, onto #2: Getting the best players on the pitch together at the same time
Milan had 11 shots in the first half and we know they made exactly zero. Made two subs at the half, as Kalulu and Dest come in and who probably should have started (yes, even Dest) because Calabria and Kjær both got carded covering the same guy (we'll get into this in just a few minutes) so not exactly addressing the putrid finishing. Milan then had 4 more shots on goal (and yes, made zero) before Brahim and Messias came in at the 66th minute. Giroud then scored 3 minutes later with some nice quick and direct build up play from Tomori-to-Brahim-to-CDK-to-Theo-Giroud.
In the end Milan had (shots on target/shots):
First half (first 45min): 2/11
First 20min of 2nd half (min 45-65): 0/4 (2/15 at this point in the game)
Last 25+extra time of second half (min 66-end with offensive subs coming in at this exact moment) : 3/7 (this excludes Kalulu's bar rattler, so I'd actually say that's more like 4/7). Oh, and the lone goal they scored came during this timeframe
So maybe the best guys weren't on the pitch to start the game with the strategy Pioli deployed...
Now #3: providing some tactical options with substitutions being that Milan is short on LWs and CFs
Ok, so there's a two week break now, so most of the team was going to get some rest after a grueling first seven weeks of the season. Does Pioli start his most talented guys while still fitting the system as well as any other lineup? Nope. I mean, come on, is there really much difference in starting CDK at LW compared to Krunić? No and considering where the hell Krunić was playing on the pitch it was like Pioli started two CAMS who played right on top of each other. I personally think CDK should have been out at LW.
This is something Pioli hasn't been very good at - going into a game wanting to rest some guys - so he basically hopes he can sh*t-brick a lucky goal with a bunch of non-finesse players and not have to use the guys he's trying to rest. Instead what usually happens while he's trying to rest his usual starters the team he does field just isn't able to get the lead and he ends up having to put in these same guys in he's trying to rest to help salvage a point or all 3. I for the life of me can't figure out why he hasn't figured this one out yet...how about you start the game playing for the lead then sub early and often...sigh.
The the last thing I said...Because that would mean Brahim or CDK sits to start the game and I think they both need to be out there
I didn't explicitly state it in the last sentence quoted above but it's clear the point I was making was don't have a bunch of guys in there who can't finish if you're going to stick with the same high pressure/up-the-pitch 4-2-3-1. I didn't have an issue, in theory, with the lineup Pioli chose. I really didn't. My critiques rested with the assumption that IF Pioli was going to stick with the usual high pressure 4-2-3-1 what made the most sense lineup-wise after that decision was made. Clearly choosing a squad that was more brawn and work rate than finesse and finishing cost Milan all 3pts ESPECIALLY with the strategy staying the same.
That last point is worth diving into more: what lineup with what strategy.
Napoli was without Osimhen and aside from Kvaratskheila, no real threatening pace on the pitch to worry about. Pioli choosing Kjær isn't a bad play per se, but pairing him with Calabria on the same side needing to cover Kvaratskheila was bone-headed. If Kjær couldn't come in for Tomori then this wasn't the game to play him. At least not to start or at least with this gameplan. Furthermore, I didn't know Napoli would sit back. I mean it didn't surprise me with Osimhen being out. But Pioli and his coaches should've. It's their job, not mine, not yours. We have other jobs we have to attend to but they don't. The only way Napoli could cause damage would be on the counter AND countering down their left (Milan's right) and Pioli only helped their cause by having Calabria and Kjær in there.
There are obviously lots of factors to consider when designing a gameplan and an equal number of options to choose from regarding lineup and strategy. Keep in mind the default mindset here is running a high press/high pressure/high up the pitch 4-2-3-1 and anything else would be differing from this default. Here's my very basic and solid but not an all-encompassing list of...principles:
When Substituting (Substituting in this case means either starting in place of a normal starter or subbing in-game)...
A like-for-like player, meaning same traits, skillsets, speed? Keep strategy the same
A player like the one listed above but not as good? Keep it the same but don't have too many of these types out there together at the same time
Different traits? Think hard about what you're going to do. For example, Kjær is a fine player. In fact, been one of the better players when healthy for the last 2.5 years. But his strengths are his size, his physicality, intelligence, positioning, and his long ball passing. Are these needed in Milan's current system? Not really. Are his weaknesses - slowness, anticipation - a vulnerability? Yes and they only get magnified when Milan plays an opponent with pace and/or likes to counter with said pace.
If Kjær was going to play then Pioli needed to shift the strategy to one that pressed less and sat a little bit deeper. This would have protected their end better and would've forced Napoli to come out of their hole. It also would've helped neutralize Kvaratskheila, Napoli's only real threat most of the game.
The other thing this approach would have done with the lineup Pioli chose was provide an opportunity for Milan's less finesse-and-finishing types of players playing to try and finish off chances with fewer defenders around them either via the counter or just by helping to stretch and spread out a very compact Napoli side.
Finally, one last option would've been to start your normal starters, namely Kalulu and Dest (who should be starting despite getting de-pantsed), go ahead and start whoever in the midfield 3 (I would've gone Messias, Brahim, and CDK), ideally get the lead or at the minimum hold onto a point by playing your preferred system, then bring in Kjær and Calabria, maybe even Krunic, and buckle down and sit back and let an Osimhen-less Napoli try can sneak one through.
A missed opportunity by Pioli to add to his playbook with some calculated chances and changes in philosophy.
Ratings
Yes, I did do them and they've been sitting in the draft of this post for 3 days. So, if you're curious, here are my ratings for the game:
MAIGNAN 6.5 Easily the worst game of the season from him mostly because he should've - yes, should've - stopped that PK. Had no chance on the 2nd goal
CALABRIA 6 We all saw it
KJÆR 6.5 Was fine all things considered. Those things considered? Re-read the commentary above
TOMORI 6.5 Responsible for goals in two straight games in a row now and seems to be losing focus about the play around him. His teammates haven't been doing him any favors either
THEO 7.5 One of the few better players on the day. Really capsulated a great day with a fantastic assist to Giroud
BENNACER 7.5 Best player of the entire midfield. Was absolutely everywhere and was excellent in all aspects of the game. We won't see a much better version than what we got in this game. Bravo
TONALI 7 Solid day for the partner in the double-pivot
SAELEMAEKERS 6 Back to regular Saelemaekers
CDK 6 Had a hockey assist as part of a nice build-up for the Giroud goal. And had one nice give-and-go with Krunic where he fired one back into the area for a teammate that was either behind Giroud or on it's way to the middle in front of the 6yd box for someone, with Calabria as the closest. Other than that?...
KRUNIC 7/6.5 I'm giving him a 7 on one hand because he was really good for what he is as a player. Really couldn't give more or get more out of him for that. The problem, and the reason for the second score - the 6.5 - is that he was the wrong guy in the wrong role
GIROUD 7.5 Becoming just as important as Leão, specifically with his ability to come up with big goals in big games at important moments. Love the guy
subs
DEST 5.3 *edit on 10/24/2022: after reading through comments I agree the 6 was too generous but I feel going down .5 is too little and going down 1 is too much, so I’m going to knock him down .7* Tough day for the kid. I'm not going to penalize him too harshly for the PK. I re-watched it a few times and it was for sure a PK, which I originally thought was a little soft. It wasn't a bad challenge, just unfortunate. Where I think he really struggled was with dealing with Mario Rui. Man, the wily-old vet just owned the kid
KALULU 7 Came on for a yellow-carded Kjær and was an immediate upgrade. Second time this season he damn near had an amazing goal and both would've been amazing and this one would've earned a point. Kid is a treat
DÍAZ 6.5 Came in an provided a very important direct line from the midfield and getting it forward with his receive-turn-and-run style, even though I couldn't quite figure out where he was positioned as CDL seemed to stay in the CAM role. Almost got the game-tying head in the dying minutes. Also, played well with CDK
MESSIAS 6.5 Entered the game and immediately provided much more going forward than what Saelemaekers had done. Solid shot on goal late as well
ADLI 6.5 Didn't care for his ambitious shot from distance but came in and ran well and into the spaces well and made himself available. Not sure what he's doing/not doing that isn't inspiring confidence but the game didn't look too fast for him for the first time this regular season
coaching
PIOLI 3 Yeah. Worst game tactically in a long time. I can't even think of a game he butchered as badly as this one. If you read my commentary above, you know what I felt he should've done differently. Regardless of my criticisms, #IPIT
Forza Milan

Miscellaneous La Squadra Headcanons
Risotto
desk drawers are filled with a bunch of knickknacks and other things. Only one drawer has actual files related to work
He keeps leftover metal instruments from Metallica in the top left drawer, along with regular ones (mostly because he doesn’t know which ones are which)
Keeps a Walkman at his desk with an assortment of metal CDs. Melone tried to teach him how to burn his own CD but it didn’t end very well. Poor boomer man can I get an F in the chat :,(
Still struggles with the mainland dialect(s), sometimes he just gives up and reverts to Sicilian
Nobody knows what he’s saying, but they just nod and act like they do
“...None of you understood a single word of that, did you?”
Ghiaccio
Figure skating prodigy
Started as a way to help his ADHD, but it came very naturally to him
Called “il Cigno” (the swan) because of his elegant skating
Knocked a skater out after a performance (clearly rigged), lost all hopes of a scholarship and sponsorship
The “stereotypical” Italian dialect (I believe Tuscan is the most common but there’s dialects depending on where you are in Tuscany). Doesn’t use slang
Formaggio intentionally makes his accent thicker to make him mad
Works every time
“If you slur that word one more fucking time I’ll crush you like a bug under my shoe!!”
Melone
Med school dropout
Wanted to be a pediatrician, but accidentally got struck with the stand arrow
No need to take care of kids when you can just make em amirite fellas
Unsurprisingly, very good at handling and taking care of kids
Gets pouty if some random baby giggles and coos at a teammate instead of him
Babysits as a side job when things are slow. Raving reviews and a good income. Plus he gets to look at all the cute kids and guess what the next little bun in the oven will look like
97% of the time, his predictions are correct
Sultry and breathy voice. Couple it with his Ligurian accent and it’s like silk and honey
Shockingly maternal (no, not paternal) to anyone that needs it. He’s the La Squadra Mom to Prosciutto’s La Squadra Dad
For the love of god don’t say that to him otherwise he’ll make a comment about you having a mommy/daddy kink or he’ll say something to Prosciutto. While the former is embarrassing, the latter will likely result with you in a nursing home
“Oh, do you need someone to take care of you? I’d gladly take up that burden, ahuhuhu~”
Prosciutto
hates menthol and only smokes Marlboro Lights. Gets a lot of shit from Formaggio for it but it doesn’t bother him
Extremely close to his Nonna. Epitome of a mammone but for his grandmother instead
Speaks French. No one knows how or why. Won’t elaborate if you ask
Secretly very petty. Like a PTA mom, he remembers the smallest slight and carries it with him until he can bring it up and shove it in your face
Affectionate when he first gets his nicotine fix. Expect pats on the back or ruffled hair if you’re within arms length
Very thick Florentine accent
Ghiaccio fights with him over who’s Tuscan dialect is better
“It’s better to sound like a native than like google translate, amico.”
Pesci
Tends to doze off easily. If the conditions are just right, he can fall asleep almost anywhere
Chubby.
Self conscious about his chub but no one (especially not Prosciutto) makes fun of it. Either they’re too scared to because of Prosciutto or they genuinely don’t care
Prosciutto beats the shit out of people that do
Wants his big bro to take him fishing but Prosciutto fusses over his appearance too much and doesn’t have fishing clothes. The one time they went out, he complained the whole time and lost one of his expensive watches. Pesci still hasn’t heard the end of it
Has a bit of a lisp in his Neapolitan accent. Very self conscious about it but no one notices it unless he makes a comment about it
“No, I’m not from Castile, why do you say that? We went to the same elementary school, Formaggio.”
Illuso
actively instigates fights when he feels things are too quiet. Formaggio is usually the one he picks on, but Ghiaccio is very easy to rile up as well
Starts shit and leaves. Likes to watch the fall out and giggle like a school girl in the safety of the mirror world
Conversely, hates it when he gets picked on.
Soft Venetian accent, it’s slowly faded since he’s lived in Napoli
“There’s an old American adage: big feet, big meat. What does that say about you and your stand, Maggi?”
Formaggio
also smokes cigarettes. Fights with Illuso over the regular Marlboro reds because they don’t want to use Prosciutto’s “old man smokes”
Habit of shrinking things. Not on purpose, he just forgets he doesn’t have to steal things all the time
Loves seafood, except for mussels. Ask why and you’ll get a Ghiaccio-esque retelling of how he found out he was allergic
Thickest accent besides Risotto. 100% Neapolitan born and bred
Cheers for Atlanta United along with La Nazionale
Makes Ghiaccio upset, so it’s more of a reason to do it
“Just because I like a team that isn’t Italian doesn’t mean anything, amico. Maybe if you weren’t so close minded you could appreciate non-Italian things too, heh heh.”

Diego Maradona (2019, United Kingdom)
You may know Asif Kapadia as the director of the biographical documentaries Senna (2010; Brazilian Formula 1 racer Ayrton Senna) and Amy (2015; English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse). Both Senna and Winehouse died in tragic circumstances, their legends remaining incomplete for many. For his third film in an informal trilogy of documentaries on early fame, its corrosiveness, and the public’s role in celebrity culture, Kapadia decided to challenge himself by profiling a living figure. Argentinian soccer star Diego Maradona is often considered one of the greatest to have ever played the Beautiful Game. Though it has been more than twenty years since Maradona kicked a ball in a competitive match, his legend and personality have loomed over his fellow countryman – and my personal choice for the best active footballer – Lionel Messi. Kapadia’s documentary does not cover the entirety of Maradona’s career. Instead, it focuses on Maradona’s time at S.S.C. Napoli (“Napoli” will be used to refer to the club and the city interchangeably and, sometimes, simultaneously) and his participation at the 1986 and 1990 FIFA World Cups. These are the years, Kapadia posits, that formed the myth of Maradona, and the role of Neapolitans and Italians in creating and later rejecting that myth.
Glossed over are Maradona’s early career in Argentina (boyhood club Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors) and his turbulent time at F.C. Barcelona (plagued with injuries and ended when he instigated a brawl against victorious Athletic Bilbao after the 1984 Copa del Rey final). Already established as one of the best players in the world, Maradona’s dribbling ability, unpredictable acceleration, and goalscoring prowess attracted renown and stoked fear in any defender with their back towards the goalmouth. Though unquestionably dedicated to the sport and assiduous in training, Maradona could not shake off questions about his personal life. His reputation as a hard partier followed him from Catalonia to Napoli. Napoli, after surviving a relegation scrap in Serie A during the 1983-84 season, was a club desperate to escape its trappings as a perennial middling club with infrequent success. With Maradona, then-club President Corrado Ferlaino saw an opportunity to challenge the “Northern Giants”: Juventus, A.C. Milan, and Inter Milan.
What makes Diego Maradona intriguing to soccer fans and people who do not know the difference between a corner kick and a goal kick is twofold. First is its take on how the Maradona came to be an embodiment of Neapolitans and, more broadly, southern Italy. Second – and this extends beyond Maradona’s playing career – is the relationship between a celebrity and their adoring or loathing public. More on the latter shortly, as Maradona’s connection to Neapolitans sociologically leads to celebrity.
Since Italy’s unification in 1861, northern and southern Italy have been culturally and socioeconomically divided. The breadth and source of those divisions are numerous and cannot be sufficiently listed in this simple film review. In short, northern Italy is wealthy, cosmopolitan, industrial, a tech hub, capitalist, attractive to internal and external immigrants, trusting of regional and national government. Southern Italy is poorer, provincial, agrarian, suffering from high rates of emigration, more religious, more family-oriented, less trusting of regional and national government (for legitimate reasons), and is the operational center of the nation’s mafia organizations. The images and testimonies in this documentary are colored by this divide. With his father’s partial Native American descent and impoverished background, what made Maradona a folk hero to Neapolitans were his ruggedness, sheer force of hardscrabble will, and rebelliousness against the footballing establishment. It is also what made him despised among Ultras of the Northern Giants, that a player of his caliber dare sign for a southern upstart. When Maradona joined Serie A, hooliganism in European soccer was a blight on the sport. An excerpt of a chant sung by Juventus’ Ultras would be banned in today’s Serie A, but the hatred is evident:
Even the dogs run too, the Neapolitans are coming. Sick with cholera. Victims of the earthquake. You never washed with soap. Napoli shit! Napoli cholera! You are the shame of the whole of Italy.
Using Maradona’s words – there are no contemporary talking heads in Kapadia’s film, only archival or audio-only interviews are used – he noticed, every time Napoli traveled to northern away games, that the team and their supporters were subject to racist behavior by the home fans. Perhaps playing with a chip on one’s shoulders is not the best way for an athlete to perform at their best, but Kapadia’s film argues that this propelled Maradona to be as great a player as he became. The public pressure and spectacle placed upon Maradona was immense. Think Beatlemania, but more localized and foisted upon one person, and that may be a merely adequate description of how Neapolitans viewed their sporting hero. Kapadia and editor Chris King (Kapadia’s two prior documentaries, 2010’s Exit Through the Gift Shop) splice together images of Maradona’s playing career, off-field shenanigans, and heartwarming moments with his family with astounding purpose. It might have been easy to start from the beginning, describing Maradona’s simple beginnings and the family that raised him. That Kapadia and King decide to begin with Maradona’s introduction to Napoli fans and the inconsistent first season – still better than a relegation scrap – provides a shot of adrenaline to start the film. Yes, this momentum is somewhat lost when they then resort to describing Maradona’s upbringing after completing the first season. Nevertheless, Maradona’s background is followed immediately by images and accounts of northern hostility – this structure provides a rawer illustration of the north-south divide through sport. And given southern Italy’s mafia presence, it makes the perfect transition into the elements that led to Maradona’s downfall in Napoli.
That downfall, of course, would not occur for another several years and well after Maradona led Argentina to win the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico – a victory that, characteristically for Maradona, attracted controversy and solidified his reputation, internationally, as one of the sport’s magicians and as a shameless cheater. My apologies to readers from England and Germany for whatever unwanted memories you have been reminded of. The prelude to the troubles that would follow come from one of Maradona’s most trusted confidants, personal trainer Fernando Signorini (also served as fitness coach for the Argentinian national team when Maradona served as head coach at the 2010 FIFA World Cup), who sees the past – and probably the present, too – Maradona as someone who had to adopt separate personas to become the greatest footballer of his era:
Diego was a kid who had insecurities, a wonderful boy. Maradona was the character he had to come up with in order to face the demands of the football business and the media. Maradona couldn’t show any weakness. One day I told him that with Diego I would go to the end of the world, but with Maradona I wouldn’t take a step.
Maradona himself admits this reality. The film agrees with Signorini and Maradona’s beliefs that the latter would not be as legendary a footballer as he was without “Maradona.” In becoming the savior of Napoli, Neapolitans clamored for Maradona’s attention – from those unable to afford tickets to attend matches to his friendship with Carmine Giuliano of the Giuliano clan of the Nuova Famiglia. With fans and the media’s excessive demands for on-the-field performance and availability, near-religious fervor for the club’s messiah, and rumors (and realities) of Maradona’s infidelity, the Giulianos provided an outlet from the cameras and microphones being shoved in his personal space. That outlet was cocaine. Maradona became dependent on the mafia for his fix, to help him escape the emotional and psychological pain life in Napoli had brought.
His addiction would not be the sole reason for his fall from grace but, by the end of his time there, the Neapolitan fans had discarded him as quickly as they anointed them his savior. Shunned, ostracized, and regarded as having turned his back on what made him so popular, the place where he had become one of the best soccer players ever wanted nothing more to do with him, let alone help him conquer the personal demons that had infected his soul. One moment at a Christmas party, only a few months before his departure from Napoli, captures Maradona staring emptily at nothing, as people carouse around him. The camera fixates on his blank face; Kapadia has the sound decrescendo to nothing. It is unsettling filmmaking. Maradona knows the end is near, and that he will have to answer for his decisions sooner than when he will be ready.
Kapadia’s penchant for messy, dramatic public figures made him well-suited to tackle Diego Maradona. The documentary’s non-match footage is pieced together from passages of an aborted behind-the-scenes documentary that began production in 1981 – half of the film stock was lying in Napoli; the rest gathering dust in the Buenos Aires home of Maradona’s ex-wife. Diego Maradona might not be revelatory to any Italian or Argentinian who has memories watching the diminutive superstar terrorize defenses live or on grainy ‘80s television sets. Some details – including Maradona’s demands for a transfer away from Napoli in the summer of 1990, the traumas of Maradona’s self-declared lack of responsibility to his illegitimate son, and how a single-minded desire to provide for his parents and siblings – surface at select times in the film, only to be mentioned fleetingly near the conclusion. But noting that is based on a life still not withdrawn from the spotlight, that may be excused.
In an interview with Roger Bennett, Kapadia describes his subject as the bridge between the black-and-white television era of Pelé and the online-fueled (but, when compared to Maradona, tightly guarded) present of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Maradona, who consented to a wide-ranging in-person interview with Kapadia, is as introspective in his commentaries as he has ever been. Here, he can be Diego, fully cognizant of his vices and the suffering he has caused to his family and friends. But in public, such as his brazen display in the stands during Argentina’s Round of 16 World Cup match versus Nigeria in 2018, he must be Maradona the character.
No matter the era, Maradona has always been an entertaining subject – modern footballers are more sanitized due to the now-constant scrutiny of social media and 24/7 sporting news networks (those like Zlatan Ibrahimović are endangered exceptions) – even in quieter moments. Perhaps, noting the psychological wreckage Maradona reckons with even today, this Argentinian’s story, by way of Spain and Italy, is a warning to fans and professional footballers alike. Do sporting fans understand the consequences when they declare their heroes as living gods? And why can it be so easy to dispose of these allegedly infallible celebrities? The answers, if there are any in this film, are not easy to find. Even Kapadia himself will not draw simple conclusions, knowing that the myth of Maradona persists, evangelized by no less than the soccer superstar himself.

Reviews 256: I Blagueur
After visiting the island of Sardegna and the cosmic prog of Gruppo 2001’s Chi Sei?, Dualismo Sound now sets its sights on Torino with a reissue of I Blagueur’s Balla? No!… / Ti D’ Bale? As usual, there’s a fascinating story underlying the music, this time centered on Gualtiero Gatto, a successful producer operating out of his own G7 Studios, where he produced disco and pop projects for G7 Music Group as well as Drums Edizioni Musicali (for a particularly wild example, see Drums Music Shows’ recently reissued Sexy Banana single). Also working in Torino was Valerio Liboni, another highly regarded producer who had ascended to the very heights of Italian pop stardom in the early 70s with the single “Pop Corn” as part of La Strana Società. One day in 1983, Liboni approached Gatto with a challenge: “let’s make a record with a rap! one in Italian and one in Piemontese dialect,” an idea no doubt inspired by the recent success of Falco’s “Der Kommissar” and Pino D’Angiô’s anthemic “Ma Quale Idea” from three years prior.
But whereas those tracks pulled from synthpop and romantic disco, respectively, Gatto and Liboni as I Blagueur were more interested in loved up and hard-hitting boogie, letting their cool and expressive raps flow over scuzzy funk basslines, smashed robo-disco beats, heatwave chord blasts, and tropical marimbas while joyous angel choirs call out through the night. And as with Dualismo Sound’s Gruppo 2001 reissue, Early Sounds man Pellegrino appears and continues his trend of tastefully reworking Italo classics, this time smashing together “Balla? No!” and “Ti D’ Bale” into an extended epic while adding in his own tasteful percussive touches. For good measure, Pellegrino also includes an instrumental dub, where the mutant boogie bass synths and muscular disco drums stoke maximum dancefloor energy beneath rapid fire claps and solar chord blasts. And it’s remarkable how modern the track sounds freed from the tongue-in-cheek vocals…a feverish and tropically tinged future funk paradise not too far off from that irresistible West Hill Studio sound.
I Blagueur - Balla? No!… / Ti ‘D Bale? (Dualismo Sound, 2019) “Balla? No!…” is the standard Italian version, starting on sweltering chord stabs and a stomping, almost industrially-tinged disco beat, with huge snare blasts, gated reverb decay, and hi-hats adding a freaky shuffle. The sexual boogie basslines are fat, dirty, and mean as hell as they storm and slide beneath rocketing dub claps and wavering funk chords. A gristly and monotone voice speaks of nighttime adventures at Le Roi Club, evoking dark suited and sunglassed individuals leaning against dimly lit walls while cooly smoking cigarettes…wholly unbothered by the humid mediterranean heat. As we sweep into the chorus, the vibe turns ecstatic and triumphant, with “Balla / lei balla / balla no!” rapped apathetically and radiant diva choirs chanting “no no no” in response. Brass synths sweep through dreamy new wave ascents while synthesized marimbas weave tropical fusion threads above crushing tom fills. And sometimes we push even further into joyous dancefloor fantasy, as the angelic divas take over and run through spellbinding disco enchantments, before it all breaks down into pure club madness, with burning basslines snaking through delirium patterns while flamboyant drum fills are surrounded by echo-clap madness.
Tumblr media
“Ti D’ Bale?” features the exact same instrumental arrangement as “Balla? No!...”, differing only in the vocal presentation. The raps here are more expressive and zany, with wild laughter and a playful energy suffusing the Piemontese poetics. I speak very little Italian and certainly not the Piemonte dialect, but it appears that the lyrics here are remixed and rearranged, though John Travolta still receives a name check. Also in this version, the chorus features a new refrain, with enigmatically rapped lyrics of “Bale / Ti ‘d bale? / Bala nen!”  followed by magnificent soul divas singing “Balu nen!”…creating a subtle but infectious call and response that isn’t as pronounced in the “Balla? No!…” version. And during the heavenly climaxes of euphoric angel radiance, the feminine voices still swell together and soar towards the sky, now singing “mi balu nen e sun an po’ straca / no no no no / t’an piase nen e batu la fiaca.“
Tumblr media
The fact that “Balla? No!..” and “Ti D’ Balla” share the same instrumental template allows Pellegrino a large amount of freedom in his “Balla (Interregional Mix),” which starts with an extended dance floor introduction. When the raps flow in, Pellegrino cuts hypnotically between the standard and Piemontese dialects while leaving plenty of space for the heatwave synth chords and the boogie funk rhythms. During the chorus, he also alternates deliriously between both versions and creates new pop hooks in the process, all while lettings the soaring diva vocals fly through the sky. Much of the focus is given over the instrumental passages of wavering synth heat, tropical idiophonics, and dub clap fireworks (which seem to contain additional layers, no doubt added by Pellegrino). Vocal scats and madcap laughs are used to incredible effect as the lyrical flow is sometimes reduced to abstracted Italo vocalisms and the original tracks’ slithering bassline and crushing drum passages are repeated several times, creating anthemic moments of hands-in-the-air euphoria. Best of all, Pellegrino makes the subtle yet vital addition of closed disco hi-hats…a sort of metronomic pulse adding that much more sexual club energy to the freaky boogie stomp.
Tumblr media
Closing out the package is Pellegrino’s instrumental dub, which will likely get the most rinsing from modern DJs due to its uncanny alignment with the energetic future funk, cosmic boogie, and Italo magic coming out of Napoli, especially the work of Mystic Jungle. Pellegrino’s touch is surgical yet romantic as he focuses in on the instrumental passages, with mediterranean mallet cascades and sweaty dancefloor hypnotics allowed to shine in full. It’s as if, now devoid of Gualtiero Gatto’s and Valerio Liboni’s mocking raps, the song is allowed to blossom into a freaky and physical disco funk storm, one whose jacking boogie bass synths, cerebral clap patterns, and sci-fi drum machines rival the heaviest and most far-out of Dualismo Sounds’ many scorching groovers.

Submission - Which family should i choose to Au Pair for?
So for a while now I’ve really wanted to try Au Pairing. I’m a 20 year old American woman. I really like travelling and adore children ( I’ve been around them my whole life) and think this would be a wonderful opportunity. but I’m having the hardest time deciding. I went through a very recommended au Pair site and talked with 4 amazing families and now I really cannot choose, they all seem amazing. I had one family from Madrid contact me, I facetimed the mom and she seemed very nice! She has 2 boys around 7 and 11 and this will be her 2nd au pair from America. She had her au pair text me and the girl said she liked the experience a lot ( it was her first time as well). I like madrid because I feel like I will be able to meet friends and other au pairs because it is a large, well connected city. Another reason I like it is because I’ve always wanted to become fluent in Spanish and I would be able to take classes ( I would have to pay for them) and the family offered to help me learn the language. The pay is around $316 ( in USD) a month and a room and bathroom. Her schedule doesn’t seem demanding, it fits well for me. The only thing that threw me off was that the mom didn’t really ask much about me, when we chatted it was mostly just her talking the entire time and she sort of brushed off my questions ( not intentionally or in a mean way). Now on to my second family, its a Spanish family that lives in Geneva Switzerland. I facetimed them they are a young couple I’d say maybe mid thirties. They have a 2 year old boy and a 4 year old girl (such cuties). I would be their first ever au pair ( they want to teach their kids English) they seemed really nice and offered to pay for my language course and $600 a month on top of that (mind you, I don’t have a lot of money saved up to begin with), the only thing that worries me is finding friends for when im not with the family, and the kids are so little im afraid that it might be more demanding? (but idk sometimes older kids are harder, I think it just depends really). So I really liked them and the fact that I wouldn’t really have to worry about if im gonna have enough money, plus they might take me to spain with them in the summer (if I want to they said) so that would be fun! My third family is a single mom in Napoli Italy. She has a 14 year old girl and a 12 year old boy. When I facetimed her she was VERY welcoming, and we hit it off right away. She seemed like a very fun person like me. She said that her kids were pretty self sufficient but she wants to teach her kids about other cultures and my language (shes never had an American au pair before), she said they go on ski trips and swimming in the summer (I love skiing and swimming) and she makes the best Italian food! ( her other au pairs RAVED about their time with her) she said she would pay me the average $316 a month and obviously cook me food and pay for me when they go out. The only thing is her apartment is a little small and I really do like my privacy sometimes and the quiet so that is the only problem, and that naples is a little dangerous from what I looked up (im not sure if i would find other au pair s in the area) but I think Italy is beautiful and I cant even begin to explain how much I love Italian food!!) and her schedule was nice it was mostly afternoons and 3 days off (I hate getting up early) . Last but not least, the family from Verona Italy. This family has 2 kids, a nine year old girl and a 12 year old boy. The house is GORGEOUS and I would have a nice private room and bathroom and plus, its Verona!! ( Romeo and Juliet + beautiful city). She seemed very nice on facetime and really seemed like she wanted to get to know me and was genuine. The schedule was a little iffy to me because she said I would have to get up at 7 am or earlier and I really don’t enjoy waking up that early but the school is right across from her house. She was the only person I FaceTimed without actually meeting any other part of the family, like I did on the other families facetimes (I met the other ones kids over the phone), so I really don’t know what they are like plus she said she would only pay me $280 a month which im pretty sure is below the standard? and plus for both the Italy families I think I would have to take an Italian course for my visa (I’d have to pay for the course) , but I have no interest learning Italian. So if anyone could put their 2 cents in that would really help!! and please don’t suggest an agency I tried that but I really like looking myself, its between these four families!
______________________________
How exciting! Au Pairing sounds like a great experience. Please understand that we can’t make this decision for you. However, my advice is to establish what is most important to you. Is it location, family, benefits, money, etc? Make a pro and con list for each one (which is a little bit of what you did in this ask!) and identify your most important pros and most important cons. Do a ton of research on the location. Try to get in contact with other au pairs and residents of those cities. Actually, my biggest advice would be to talk to other au pairs. How much can you do with 280$ versus 600$? Is that important to you? Think about your past experiences with children - what you were able to handle and what was too much. I should say that if you’ve never worked with very young children, you will want to stray away from spending a year with them.
To me, it seems like you are very fond of the first family. It also helps that you got a positive review!
Anybody other au pairs with advice?

Simeone's flight "I don't want to be like my father anymore, I'm just me"
Tumblr media
토토 사이트, 카지노 사이트, 파워볼 사이트, 온라인 카지노, 토토먹튀,파워볼먹튀,카지노먹튀
Giovanni Simeone, better known as the 'Boss Son', has just begun to soar out of his father's halo or shadow.
Italian Serie A has selected Elas Verona striker Simeone as Player of the Month for October. Simeone had an overwhelming performance in October, scoring 8 goals and 1 assist in 6 Serie A matches (starting 4 times). He jumped to second place in scoring with 9 goals and 2 assists. It is the first time in Verona history that a player has scored nine goals from the start to the 12th round.
▲ Strong team killer Verona, Simeone at the center
Verona is currently in 10th place, but after Tudor took over as manager, the rise is notable. Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked immediately after losing three consecutive games from the first match. And the successor is the current manager Igor Tudor. He was a star defender who played at the regular level at Juventus as a player, but after turning into a manager, he worked as a coach for Udinese and Juventus without any particular success. Looking at his career alone, he was an insecure senior.
However, the effect of the manager change was clear, and Verona changed dramatically. After Tudor took over as manager, Verona has a clear upward trend with 4 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss. In particular, he left a deep impression by winning 3 out of 4 wins against strong teams such as AS Roma, Lazio, and Juventus. In the most recent 12 rounds, they won a 1-1 draw at the strong Naples. Napoli is a team that has shown overwhelming power with 10 wins and 1 draw in the previous 11 matches.
Simeone was at the center of it. Simeone is currently second in the top scorer race with nine goals and two assists. All goals were scored only after Tudor took over as manager. In particular, he is a key figure in making Verona's 'strong against the strong' team color by scoring 4 goals against Lazio and 2 against Juventus alone and scoring the first goal against Napoli.
▲ From 'small hexagon' striker to 'big hexagon'
This season is likely to be the culmination of Simeone's short career. Simeone, who entered Europe in 2016, originally drew attention as the son of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone. Starting with 12 goals for Genoa in his first season, he has already established himself as a quality striker, scoring 10 goals in three seasons so far. If he continues his current scoring trend, he could quickly surpass his personal record of 14 goals.
Simeone's strengths and weaknesses were its versatility. Simeone is not fast on his feet, but he can penetrate the door well, he is not big but he fights actively, and although his technique is not excellent, he is a player who tries his feet. He was a 'little hexagon' striker, often compared to a soccer game. This is an advantage for Verona this season. He's good at catching through passes, and he shoots with a single touch and then succinctly. His header RBI is high for his height. Most of the goals he 'picked up' from the front door, but his confidence was at its peak, he successfully rolled up a shot with his right foot against Juventus. With 1.6 shots per game, he is only 49th in the league. He has a lot of decisive power with few chances to score.
Simeone is a sincere player on both sides of the ball. This is also reflected in Tudor's remarks. It's not a review of Simeone, but he said his football is not for big clubs. "I find a balance between attacking and playing defensively. I can't demand such a tough play from a player like Ronaldo," the superstar said. said it was hard Tudor knows Ronaldo well as Juventus coach last season. Also Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti, who most recently faced Tudor, said: "Verona has defended our players very well throughout the pitch. Simeone put as much effort in interfering with his opponent's build-up as he did on scoring.
Verona is the 'all-defense team' with 15.8 innings, second in overall fouls per game. This does not mean that one or two players are responsible for the fouls, and several key players share a similar number of fouls. Simeone ranks third on the team with 1.7 innings per game. The number of fouls earned is also on the higher side with 1.5, which is the 2nd place in the team.
▲ The hard-working group who trained even during their honeymoon, now refuses to compare with their father
In early October, when the uptrend began, Simeone said the secret to his success was thorough preparation. In an interview with Gacheta dello Sport, he said, "I went to the Maldives on my honeymoon during summer vacation, and even then I trained every day. Fortunately, my wife likes the gym.
Last season, the initial momentum was good, but after being weakened by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), he did not recover. That's why Simeone was more concerned about his self-management. "Last season, I couldn't show my skills, so I set the rules to always train and play the best for myself. This season, I prepared really hard, so I was confident. It feels like I belonged to Verona from the beginning. The idea of Verona is me It was a reflection of who I was, and I had confidence in it. From the moment I signed, I explained that I would be the perfect fit.”
Simeone has said in past interviews that he wants to be like his father, but he is different now. His father, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, is particularly familiar to Italian football fans, as he played for Pisa, Inter Milan and Lazio during his active career. His hair was thick enough for his son to draw a line saying, "I don't want to be like my father anymore. I am me."
One day, his father called and said that he had the legendary Argentine striker Hernan Crespo next to him, and he changed it. "You're good at it, but you have to be more ruthless," Crespo said, advising you to play cunning, which is the virtue of a Serie A striker. However, Simeone did not follow this advice recklessly. "I'm not that kind of person. By first respecting others with an honest attitude, I will be respected too. I don't act provocatively first." 26-year-old Simeone's rise is a little more special because it is the product of his beliefs and efforts.
