I don't know what the greetings card industry is like in other countries, and I've probably bitched about this before, but I can not STAND shopping for greetings cards in the UK.

First off, the shops and online sites are always sectioned off into 'for him' and 'for her', which, as a non-binary person, sets my teeth on edge, even when I'm shopping for hims and hers. It's like 'heyyyyy, society thinks your gender is bullshit!'

Then the actual card themes can be summed up as:

For Him: farts, DIY, sports, cheese(?!), cars, women's bodies in skimpy underwear with the heads cut off, booze, bold cold colours

For Her: flowers, chocolates, butterflies, handbags, cutesy animals, cocktails, cake, shirtless men with ripped abs, high heels, warm pastel colours

And none of the jokes on the humorous cards are actually funny, and all the serious cards sound fake as fuck. "To the world's best [family member]!' Except that they're really not the world's best. Best case-scenario, they're pretty cool and you love them. At worst, you haven't seen them in person in years, they post shitty right-wing memes on their Facebook, you have nothing to say to each other, but if you don't send them a card they'll get really fucking pissy and that will flow down the family grapevine until it gets back to you. 🙄

So either you send an unfunny card with a cringey gender-stereotypical joke or a wildly exaggerated platitude on it, or you spend hours looking for cards that don't fit those criteria, and usually end up sending one that's blank inside with a picture of a pretty landscape on it. The whole greetings card thing is a throwback to pre-internet days, and it needs to die.

Period charity Binti International has launched the UK’s first period charity shop dedicated to ensuring accessibility to menstruation products and information.

The shop opened its doors this week in Walton on Thames, Surrey, where the council became the first in England to provide free period products across 55 sites, including libraries, offices, retail stores, public buildings and places of worship.

Surrey County Council adopted Binti’s Dignity At Work campaign to increase access to products to those who need them and work towards removing the stigma attached to periods.

It comes after a report by Plan International, released last month, found that more than one in four (28 per cent) girls between the ages of 14 and 21 are struggling to afford period products in the UK.

Of the 1,000 girls polled, the report also revealed that nearly one in five (19 per cent) reported being unable to afford period products at all since the start of 2022.

Binti’s new period charity shop aims to provide free disposable period products, and will also hold menstrual health workshops, display menstrual artwork, and sell various types of products including biodegradable and reusable products.

Manjit K Gill, CEO of Binti, tells The Independent that having a physical space has piqued the curiosity of many passing by the shop, including women and girls of all ages, and some men.

“For us, working at a community level has always been important. Our work with Surrey County Council has been doing so well, so we thought to ourselves, how do we add more value?” she says.

“With the shop, anyone can come in and look at all the types of products we have available and, most importantly, have conversations with us. Girls have been coming in and talking about their periods as though I’m their best friend.

“They’re sharing their emotions, and at the same time, discovering period cups, period underwear.”

She says that among older women who visit the shop, many have said it was “long overdue”.

“They tell me that they can’t believe we finally have this and how fantastic it is to have a women’s charity shop. “

Gill also tells The Independent that inviting people into the space has allowed them to open up about their experiences with menstruation.

“What I’ve also found is when I meet someone and talk about my period story, I give them permission to tell me theirs, and a bond is created,” she says.

“We all have periods and we just don’t talk about it enough. That’s one of Binti’s goals, to destigmatise periods and provide spaces where we can speak about them openly.”

Gill says that men also enter the shop out of curiosity and ask about the charity’s work.

“When you tell them that one in four girls can’t afford period products, they agree that they should be free. They get it,” she says.

Binti’s Dignity At Work campaign highlights the fact that many women resort to using toilet paper when they get their period unexpectedly and do not have period products at hand.

“When you say it out loud, it sounds quite shocking, but it’s so normal that we don’t even think about how terrible it is,” she says.

The campaign provides discounted period products to organisations so they can be handed out in workplaces and other venues for free.

Mark Nuti, cabinet member for communities at Surrey County Council, says it is “an amazing initiative to ensure no one is left behind in our community”.

“Period products should be available to anyone who needs them, without stigma or shame, so I urge everyone to do their part in period dignity in Surrey and get involved.”

Gill says the charity hopes to open more period charity shops across the country to give more people access to period products.

“Education and delivery of period products is paramount across the country,” she says. “We have so far been successful here, and as we work with other councils and spread our campaign, the hope is we can open more shops in the future.”

We started by exploring historical aspects that have driven these changes, to start to interpret the significance that these influential factors will play on the future of the fashion & textile industries.

We watched a video on YouTube called “100 years of fashion: women” Published on 3 jun 2015. Were we discussed as a group what drives these changes.

The growth of the fashion industry, caused by the industrial revolution (1870-1900s) enabled the suffragettes to use fashion as a form of branding to help promote their cause.

2000s Fashion:

Casual clothing and leisurewear were big trends in the early 2000s, a casual look for women would have been, crop tops, hoodies, low-rise flared jeans, cargo pants, daisy dukes, jean skirts, off the shoulder tops, ribbed sweaters, with platform sandals, ugg boots, or sneakers. 

After researching I found technology and Y2K bug (problem in the coding of computerized systems that was projected to create havoc in computers and computer networks around the world at the beginning of the year 2000) had a huge impact on fashion in the early 2000s. The colour palette was full of shiny black tones and reflective metallics. The Y2K trend was worn on a daily but mainly reserved for going out. Popular outfits for women included mesh or handkerchief tops, box-pleated or leather skirts, shiny pants, and sparkly shoes. Britney Spears was a trendsetter for this type of style. For men, Y2K looks involved leather jackets, a statement dress shirt, and chunky shoes. 

Mid 2000s fashion - Fashion started to take cues from 1960s bohemian looks. Yoga pants, low-rise jeans, cowl-neck shirts, peasant tops, capri pants, cropped jackets, and dresses over jeans was a popular outfit choice for women. These outfits were paired with accessories, such as, chunky belts, aviator sunglasses, jelly bracelets, ties worn around the neck or as belts, ballet flats, and platform boots. The 1960s revival looks were also popular with men. Including light wash bootcut jeans, cargo shorts, classic rock t-shirt, fitted cowboy shirts, henleys, polos with popped collars, and seersucker suits. 

Late 2000s fashion - For women, crop tops were replaced with camisoles and miniskirts, bubble skirt, and sweater dresses. There was also a 1980s and 1990s revival of neon colours, animal prints, geometric shapes, light denim jeggings, and ripped acid washed jeans that were worn with gladiator sandals, ballet flats, and headbands. The oversized look became popular, but it was more subtle than the traditional 80s fit. Men’s late 2000s fashion was a mix of 1950s and 1980s throwbacks, with letterman and black leather jackets, overcoats, slim cut jeans, Ed Hardy t-shirts, flannel shirts, and V-neck sweaters. Paired with dad hats, wayfarers or aviators, motorcycle boots, converse, vans, or sneakers. 

Hip-Hop had a influence on the 2000s fashion, many rappers influenced fashion with their own clothing lines. Including Jay-Z, Diddy, Nelly, and 50 Cent. Many looks included baggy jeans, tall t-shirts, sports jerseys, velour suits, bubble jackets, and puffer vests paired with headbands, sweatshirts, Timberland boots, and sneakers like Adidas Superstars or Nike Air Force 1s. 

Streetwear is brand focused casual clothing, like jeans, tees, and sneakers. In the late 2000s popular streetwear styles included distressed skinny jeans, loose fitting tops, loose or fitted tracksuits, track pants, hoodies, graphic t-shirts, vintage thrift shop tees, and Tommy Hilfiger and U.S. Polo Assn brands. Sneakers were an important part of the style, retro Nike Air Jordans and Adidas Yeezys. 

Emo fashion became popular in the mid 2000s and took cues from goth and punk styles. Outfits were often all or mainly black with skinny jeans, band t-shirts, studded belts, and checkered vans. Every emo look was completed with the right hairstyle, choppy cuts with long side-swept bangs dyed black, platinum blonde, or a bright colour. 

Athleisure Wear - If you wanted to be comfortable yet fashionable in the early 2000s the velor tracksuits was the go to. Britney Spears, Beyonce and Eminem to Diddy were on on the tracksuit craze. They were brightly coloured and emblazoned with rhinestone logos and phrases. It was also in to mix track pants with dress clothing and design shoes to elevate the look. 

The Beatles were one of the most influential bands in history, taking their fans on a journey of fashion styles through the decades from rock to teddy boys to hippie years.

When looking at pictures of Margaret Thatcher, after the election in 1979, a well-dressed woman with her individual style is clearly shown. She began to create her image and appearance as an example of how women in power should dress. Thatcher was a confident and stern business woman however there was a clear contrast to the feminine clothing she wore. She used her clothing and style as an act of self - definition that disguised herself from others showing her individual identity as Prime Minister. Thatcher styled herself appropriately for political occasions, the most occuring colour Thatcher wore was royal blue. With her power suits and the legendary pussybow blouses, that made her a fashion icon, she was known for her haircut, her pearls, and her handbag. Her hairstyle was one of the famous features of Margaret Thatcher, as straight and precise as the lady herself. 

One great example on how her style, outfits and political power were set together was before she became Prime Minister. Thatcher wore hats because not only they suited her well but were symbols of her status and class. As the leader of a major political party, her hats seemed to be a political problem. It was a problem because middle class people with conventional attitudes were prejudiced towards her. This was not the picture of a leader the party wanted to draw. Consequently, after her election to British Prime Minister she only wore hats for State ceremonies and foreign tours but not on polictail occasions anymore.

In groups we researched information about the brand Lazy Oaf, we created a detailed report which covers each of the 8 elements that make a band pitch. These elements include: Vision & purpose, brand identity, customer, price, product, place, promotion and  packaging. In our group we decided to each choose an element to research and talk about, I picked promotion. 

Lazy Oaf’s Brand Identity is definitely something I would take away and incorporate into our brand. We want to create personal products that our customers love and respect. Minimize environmental hazards through being sustainable but with fair prices. We also discussed as a group giving back to charities with a percentage of money we make as a brand. 

This group task gave us practice with working together, assigning roles and discussing information online. We decided to split the work fairly so that everyone had an equal amount of work to research and present. As we had to present this group task to our peers it helped us practice for when we present our brand.

August 17th 1955 - Elvis Presley Elvis Presley released what would become his first No.1 hit, 'I Forgot to Remember to Forget / Mystery Train'. It hit the top of the country charts several months later and stayed there for 5 weeks.

1959 - Miles Davis American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis released Kind of Blue which is regarded by many critics as jazz's greatest record, Davis's masterpiece, and one of the best albums of all time. Its influence on music, including jazz, rock, and classical genres, has led writers to also deem it one of the most influential albums ever recorded.

1960 - The Beatles The Beatles began their first Hamburg engagement at the Indra Club, Grosse Freiheit, Hamburg, West Germany, playing the first of 48 nights at the Club. The owner, Bruno Koschmider, asked The Beatles to "Mach Shau", or really put on a show, which led to the band screaming, shouting, and leaping about the stage and sometimes playing lying on the floor. John Lennon once appeared wearing only his underwear and on another occasion, wearing a toilet seat around his neck. The Beatles lodged in a single room behind the screen of a nearby movie house.

1964 - The Beatles Glasgow council in Scotland announced that all boys and men with Beatle styled haircuts would have to wear bathing caps after a committee was told that hair from 'Beatle-cuts' was clogging the pools filters.

1965 - The Byrds The Byrds were forced to cancel a concert during their UK tour at The Guildhall, Portsmouth when only 250 of the 4,000 tickets had been sold.

1968 - Doors The Doors started a four-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Waiting For The Sun. The group's third album spawned their second US No.1 single, 'Hello, I Love You'.

1968 - Young Rascals The Rascals (formerly the Young Rascals), started a five week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'People Got To Be Free'. The group had thirteen US top 40 hits.

1969 - Woodstock Festival The final day of the 3 day Woodstock Festival took place at Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, New York. Acts who appeared included Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Ten Years After, John Sebastian, Sha Na Na, Joe Cocker, Country Joe and the Fish, The Band, Ten Years After, Johnny Winter and Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Over 186,000 tickets had been sold but on the first day the flimsy fences and ticket barriers had come down. Organisers announced the concert would be a free event, prompting thousands more to head for the concert.

1973 - Paul Williams Former Temptations singer Paul Williams was found dead in his car, after shooting himself. He owed $80000 in taxes and his celebrity boutique business had failed.

1974 - Eric Clapton Eric Clapton started a four-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 461 Ocean Boulevard, a No.3 hit in the UK. The house featured on the album cover is 461 Ocean Boulevard in the town of Golden Beach, Florida near Miami where Clapton lived while making the album.

1979 - Anita Pallenberg The New York Post reported that Anita Pallenberg (the wife of Keith Richards) was linked to a witches coven in South Salem, New York where Richards owned a house. A policeman claimed he was attacked by a flock of black-hooded, caped people and a local youth claimed he had been invited by Pallenburg to take part in ‘pot smoking sex orgies’. Locals also claimed they found ‘ritualistic stakes’ and small animals that had been ‘sacrificed’ near the house.

1999 - Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin topped a chart of Britain's most bootlegged musicians, compiled by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), after identifying 384 bootleg titles featuring Led Zeppelin performances. The bootleg chart was complied from the BPI's archive of some 10,000 recordings seized over the past 25 years. The Beatles came in second with 320 entries, other acts listed included The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd.

2008 - Jackson Browne Jackson Browne was suing US Republican presidential candidate John McCain for using one of his songs without permission. Browne claimed the use of his song Running on Empty in an advert was an infringement of copyright and would lead people to conclude he endorses McCain. Browne was seeking more than $75,000 (£40,000) in damages.

2009 - Pink Floyd A thief in New Zealand took the unusual step of leaving his contact details at the site of his crime. The man reserved a copy of Pink Floyd's The Wall at a record shop in Christchurch, leaving his name and phone number, before robbing the till. He was a regular customer at the shop and already had several records on order
