Had ro leave 20 minutes early for work because of this closure.
This isn’t even the first truck to crash into the bridge this year. For some reason truckers are incapable of reading the detour sign. On the bright side, trains don’t run on Vancouver Island so it’s not distrupting them. On the extra down side, railroad tracks have become hiking trails and this one was used to cross over a busy road and is now fully out of commission.

So,
Lady Celista takes flight!
Earlier this evening I did my first public reading of material from my upcoming sequel to The Ballad of Shuswap Joe. It's called The Long, Lonely Flight of Lady Celista and it's about my folklore legend's love interest, a British aristocrat named Celista who traversed the Atlantic in an aeroplane back in the 1930s.
Kristina and Aza accompanied me out to the Shawnigan Lake Community Centre, where I performed alongside three other local storytellers: Qwiyahwultuhw, Sylvia Swift and Laurie Giffin. I brought along my six-foot painting of Celista, which gave the audience an immediate visual to associate with my protagonist. Her appearance is based on my wife, who I pointed out in the front row.
Thanks to the Cowichan South Arts Guild and the Shawnigan Lake Museum for organizing the event, and inviting me to participate. It was a real privilege to share the stage with such talent, and having my squalling baby in the front row really added to the ambience.
The best moment of the night came when an audience member approached me afterwards with a friend to ask a question.
"So Lady Celista, did she really do all that?"
I wasn't sure what she was asking, so I asked her to clarify.
"Did she really fly her aeroplane across the Atlantic in the 1930s? Is that part true?"
I let her wonder for a moment before answering.
"No. It's all fiction."
She smiled as I explained that this was raft guide humour, that we tell tall tales that have just enough elements of truth to them that the average listener will believe them without question. We tell stories on the river about electric river eels, about historic lumberjack feats and about river channels that gobbled up entire families.
She nodded, said that made sense to her.
"I kind of wish it was true, though.”

who's the formline-inspired fish for?
So I'm still fleshing the character out, but as befitting Chowder's successor, he's a cheerful goalie from the West Coast. In this case, he's from the Pacific NW, and he's First Nations (maternally; primarily Haida and Kwakwaka'wakw) and Alaska Native (paternally; primarily Inupiat, followed by Tlingit and Yup'ik). There's actually a rhyme and reason for why I mixed those specific groups.
If Chowder can do the splits on command, this dude can do a high kick in goalie pads.
Debating on whether he went to school at Shawnigan Lake or St. George's. Willing to have input from anyone from BC between the two.

[ad_1] A single-vehicle crash on Vancouver Island has claimed the life of a star player on Great Britain's national hockey team. The Shawnigan Lake RCMP are investigating the collision that killed 33-year-old Mike Hammond of Langford early Wednesday morning. Mounties were called to the scene of the crash near Baden Powell Road around 5:30 a.m. A statement from the detachment says evidence collected at the scene indicates a black Porsche Boxster veered off the road and struck a tree, killing the driver. Ice Hockey UK, the national governing body for the sport in the United Kingdom, issued a statement Thursday identifying Hammond as the driver. "Great Britain ice hockey are devastated to announce that forward Mike Hammond has passed away," the statement said. "Mike was a cherished GB teammate, loved by so many, and very much part of the Great Britain family." Hammond made his debut with the national team in 2018, helping clinch the gold medal in Division 1 - Group A at the International Ice Hockey Federation world championships, the statement said. Hammond scored five points at this year's World Championship Division 1 Group in Nottingham in May, helping Great Britain win a promotion back to the top tier, the team said. Hammond also played for the Nottingham Panthers last season in the U.K.'s Elite Ice Hockey League. The team posted its own tribute to Hammond, offering condolences to his friends and family. "The Panthers would like to send our thoughts to Mike's family and friends at this very difficult time," the team said in a statement. "Our thoughts too are with all his former teammates and everyone at the club is thinking of Hammy and his family right now." Police and the B.C. Coroners Service are still investigating what caused the collision and Hammond's death. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Shawnigan Lake RCMP at 250-743-5514. [ad_2]

what things would immediately reveal Vivian's origins / home place? (ex. like a typical meal, accent, etc?)

I already mentioned some of her Canadian habits over here, but one thing that would probably give away the fact Vivian is from North America is probably her bringing up 'poutine' in conversations, if only because that's a very distinctly Canadian dish and is street food that's commonly sold there.
Like, if she ever reminisces about poutine, one would be correct to automatically assume she is either Canadian or has lived in Canada at some point. Aside from that, though, I can see others figuring out where she's from by her mentioning that Thanksgiving is only celebrated in October and how not being invited to the cottage or cabin is the societal equivalent of not having a date for the prom, with the latter being something I headcanon she brought up to @more-than-a-princess's Sonia at some point.
Honestly, with Vivian being such a chatterbox, I could see her telling her that Canadian middle class adults usually owned cottages, with them costing thousands to maintain, but their usability is strictly seasonal, meaning people would only travel 'up north' (specifically Muskoka, Shawnigan Lake, or the Laurentians) to visit one between June to August. Because she's not a normie, though, she would make it very clear she was never invited to one while acting as though it's no big deal... but secretly, she feels very bitter and left out nobody had ever invited her to their cottage or cabin.

Play Fair, Pay Fair?
On Saturday (15 October, 2022) it's time to vote in the local elections (BC, Canada). If you live in the Cowichan Valley, you will also be asked to vote on a referendum about the cost of recreational facilities that, potentially, will change your annual property taxes.
To get a good sense of how this will impact property taxes *across* the Valley, you need to do a good bit of digging. We found it interesting to look at how much we will all pay annually (per $100K of assessed property value) if the referendum is accepted, broken down by area:
City of Duncan $49.85
North Cowichan $50.58
Ladysmith $48.05
Lake Cowichan $67.91
Area A (Mill Bay/Malaht) $50.62
Area B (Shawnigan Lake) $60.09
Area C (Cobble Hill) $50.40
Area D (Cowichan Bay) $62.40
Area E (Cowichan Station) $53.98
Area F (Cowichan Lake South) $21.12
Area G (Gulf Islands) $15.33
Area H (North Oyster) $16.50
Area I (Youbou) $18.83
A spread of $15.33 on the low end ... to $67.91 on the high end. More details are available via the above link. Fair? Unfair?
