MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) is a human rights crisis of violence against Indigenous women in Canada and the United States
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quick facts:
4 of 5 Native women will experience violence
1/3 of Native women will experience sexual violence (and over 2/3 of that is committed by non-natives)
Murder is our 3rd leading cause of death
On some reservations MMIWG2S are murdered at 10x the national average rate
In general native women and girls are raped at twice the average national rate
According to a report by USA today, native women also go missing at the twice average national rate
Nearly all rapes are perpetuated by off reservations settlers who also face no legal repercussions (legal loopholes state you must be on tribal ground to be persecuted by tribal police and most don't stick sround)
Less than 1% of MMIW cases are logged
It's been awhile since I've since Ive posted about this, but it's a very important topic and one that's especially important to me right now.
Some of you following me have all the context clues but I'll say it plainly here on this post. My cousin is one of the many MMIW that have died awful deaths. I myself am one of the natives who've experiences violence and sexual violence. The article is right. I don't know a native who hasn't. And that shouldn't have to be our reality.
But it doesn't change without more support and we don't get support by keeping people in the dark. Unfortunately resources are directly tied to public interest in an issue. The actual MMIW site for example says it's on hiatus when you go to the resource section.
So please share this so that someone else can learn and become an ally to the cause. The way people treat native women, girls, and two spirits is awful and deserves more attention than it's getting.
May 5th is MMIW awareness day; please wear red, share our posts, schedule a vigil, make your own graphics/posts in support, etc. Make some time to show you care that day.
Just don't use the red hand over your mouth, this is representative of the violent silence MMIW are forced to keep in their graves and how those of us alive must speak for them. Its a heavy symbol that carries responsibility so it's best left alone if you aren't indigenous.

Calls to search a Manitoba landfill for the remains of slain Indigenous women will be heard across the country tomorrow. From Victoria to Halifax protesters will march to the steps of their local government buildings to protest and demand the Manitoba government pay to sift through over 61,000 tonnes of trash to bring home the bodies of four women, alleged to have been killed by one man. Tara Martinez organized the Indigenous Day of Action which will happen with the provincial legislature as the backdrop. “Our silence is compliance of the violence,” said Martinez, who oversees public education at the Children First Society of Canada.

More voices are joining the increasing calls to search the Prairie Green Landfill for the bodies of two Indigenous women believed to be buried there. Members of the Union of Taxation Employees marched in solidarity with the families, friends, and allies of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. The union, representing more than 35,000 Canada Revenue Agency employees across the country, is holding a national convention in Winnipeg this week. On Thursday afternoon, members joined dozens of others from the community in a march from the Fairmont Hotel to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. "We decided to come here to strongly condemn the inaction of the City of Winnipeg, the police department, the Province of Manitoba, and the federal government," said Marc Brière, president of the Union of Taxation Employees. "Their refusal to search the Prairie Green Landfill is totally unacceptable." Brière spoke in front of a large crowd at the museum, with more people joining the chorus of voices asking for the landfill to be searched. "I'm asking you, if it would be three white women, if it were three white privileged males like myself, would they be searching the landfill?" he asked the crowd. "I think the chances would be greater." The remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran are believed to be in the landfill. Myran's sister Jordan was among the family members who spoke at the rally. "I'd like to thank everyone who showed up today," she said. "And everyone that has showed up time and time again, for every protest and rally that we've put on." Brière said the entire Union of Taxation Employees supports the search. "We are here with you. We ask the municipality of Winnipeg, the police department, especially the premier of Manitoba…to get going and search the landfill," he said. "And the federal government to put the money on the table, to help out and get this done."

this is so fucking important, we cannot let the genocide continue. there are 3 women, murdered on the basis of their Indigenous identity buried in these landfills. and the government is doing absolutely nothing to help find them. please, if there is nothing else you can do, sign the petition and share the word of the Indigenous peoples speaking up for what is happening in their community.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew apologized Thursday to the families of two slain First Nations women whose remains are believed to be in a Manitoba landfill for what he called being reduced to a “political prop” by the former government during the recent provincial election. Kinew met with the families of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran to reset the relationship between the two families and the government. “The government of Manitoba is not liable for what a political party does or what politicians do during an election campaign,” Kinew said to the families ahead of the meeting. “As the premier of Manitoba, I share the same moral space as my predecessor, the former premier of Manitoba. Because of that I wanted to take this time to say sorry, to apologize for those things that never should have happened.”

Actually, no, I don’t like that the accepted fanon is that the fight was Alastor’s fault tbh! And I especially don’t like that the general take is ‘Vox confessed his feelings and Alastor was disgusted and went running scared’ like being ace or aro or both somehow negates the fact that he’s a grown ass man and not a 7 year old on the playground running screaming from cooties! Alastor isn’t a child! He knows what sex and romance are! Even if your personal hc is that he’s repulsed by both, Vox was his best friend, and it’s irritating that so many ppl seem think Alastor would be unable to kindly reject him and still very much want to continue their friendship. Yanno, a thing people do all the time and that Alastor has also likely done before.
IDK fanon is gonna do what it’s gonna do, I can only create my own work, but the absolute refusal to put anything on Vox, as if it’s impossible that he could have been any part of the problem like say, pushing to include Valentino, insulting Alastor’s preference for older tech, Vox pushing Alastor away bc he didn’t want ppl to think he was weak and dependent on him, the potential list goes on! But the fandom will not hop off of ‘Vox confessed and Alastor cruelly rejected him and ran away scared and now Vox is sad bc Alastor hurt him and it’s all Alastor’s fault and Alastor feels nothing about it and is actively disgusted by Vox.’ Just. Ghhgghhh.
