Endemic low pay represents a threat to the very future of the NHS, the head of the biggest union representing health staff has warned ahead of an expected wave of strike action this winter.
Strike action over pay seemed “inevitable”, said Christina McAnea, the general secretary of Unison, even though a formal ballot of staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland only opens later this month, while the process is ongoing in Scotland.
Unison was likely to coordinate with other unions in the NHS to increase the impact of any stoppages, and could also liaise with strikers in other sectors such as transport, she warned.
It came as the head of the Unite union, Sharon Graham, predicted on Sunday that up to 1 million people in various areas could soon be on strike at once.
Speaking to reporters before the Trades Union Congress conference that begins in Brighton on Tuesday, McAnea, whose union represents more than 400,000 health staff including nurses, cleaners, porters and administrators, said workers felt there was no other way to get their message across.
“It’s this core of the NHS, the registered professional staff, who are telling us they just can’t survive on the pay levels they’ve got,” she said.
While healthcare is devolved across the UK, NHS staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, excluding doctors and dentists whose pay is assessed separately, have been offered a pay rise of £1,400 a year.
For many staff such as nurses this amounted to about 4%, McAnea said, compared with an inflation rate of close to 10%. Even for lower-paid staff the lump sum was a pay rise of little more than 7%, she said.
“Strikes are inevitable,” she said. “And strikes are a symptom of things going wrong. It’s not a coordinated political campaign to bring down the government. We bring our members out on strike when we reach the point where there’s no other alternative.”
Low pay has been identified as a key reason for NHS staff shortages, with more than a quarter of trusts in England operating food banks for staff. Asked if pay represented an existential threat to the health service if not addressed, McAnea said it did.
“One of the big problems we’ve got with the NHS is the turnover of staff. They can’t recruit staff at a load of grades now,” she said. “The retail sector and Amazon are paying more in some areas. And no disrespect to people who work in retail or in Amazon warehouses, but I think that’s a less stressful job.
“I’m not a great one for conspiracy theories. But I do wonder if this is a deliberate policy, to run down the NHS so much so they can turn round and say, look, it’s failing, let’s bring in some private companies. I think the British public would oppose that, but it’s kind of happening by stealth.”
Stoppages are unlikely to begin before Christmas except in Northern Ireland, where the law on industrial disputes is different. They would probably be short term to begin with and would require the union to negotiate what level of staffing was needed to maintain “life and limb” emergency cover. However, McAnea said, given the staff shortages this may not be notably different to what happens normally.
“We’re pretty certain that they will come back to us with proposed safe staffing levels which are higher than we’ve got at the moment,” she said. “Our members feel that the situation is already so bad, they don’t think it will get any worse when they take action. What it will do is draw attention to just how bad it is in the NHS.”
McAnea said that while the Scottish government seemed open to negotiations – the offer there is 5%, also rejected by the union – Unison had repeatedly sought contact with Liz Truss and Thérèse Coffey, the health secretary, with no response.
“The government, instead of demonising unions, has to recognise that it’s their responsibility to come back and talk to us,” she said. “How is the government going to frame this, when it’s our members taking strike action?
“Are they seriously going to tell a healthcare assistant who worked all through Covid and is on £18,000 or £19,000 a year, ‘You’re holding the country to ransom’? Are they going to say, ‘You’re being irresponsible’? Are they going to say they’re an enemy of progress and an enemy of growth?”

Oil and Gas Industry is one of the important pillars of any organization in UK
Tumblr media
Oil and gas are known as fossil fuels because they are formed from the decomposition and pressurization of algae, plankton and other organisms. This process forms hydrocarbons, which are compounds consisting entirely of hydrogen and carbon that are powerful combustible fuels. Oil and natural gas are major industries in the energy market and play a dominant role in the global economy as the world's primary fuel source. The processes and systems involved in producing and distributing oil and gas are highly complex, capital-intensive, and require state-of-the-art technology. Oil and natural gas are formed from decaying plant and animal remains that have been buried within the Earth's layers and subjected to heat and pressure over millions of years. These two types of fossil fuels have been the world’s primary sources of energy for decades. They have enabled advances in living standards and all areas of the economy, from residential lighting, cooking and heating to transportation and industrial production. The production of oil and natural gas are often coupled as the two are typically found together in nature. The industry is commonly divided into three main operational sectors: upstream, midstream and downstream. The product that reaches the end consumer can take several forms, including natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, heating oil, kerosene, asphalt and other petrochemicals.

Train strikes: RMT industrial action coincides with Eurovision final
PA Media
Rail passengers are facing travel disruption on the day of the Eurovision Song Contest final as RMT union members strike again in a long-running dispute over pay and conditions.
Fourteen train companies are affected, with many running limited services.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the strikes were “cynically targeting” the final, taking place in Liverpool on Saturday night.
But the RMT denies planning strikes to coincide with the event in Liverpool.
It said Saturday was chosen for a strike as it was the last date allowed under employment laws.
Its general secretary Mick Lynch said he was sorry for the disruption but added that people have had “plenty of time” to make alternative travel arrangements, with the union having given more than two weeks’ notice.
The government says the RMT has turned down a “fair and reasonable” pay offer.
Train drivers who are part of a different union, Aslef, went on strike on Friday, with some parts of England having no trains all day. It also denies planning strikes to impact Eurovision.
Merseyrail, which operates trains around Liverpool, said it was unaffected by Saturday’s strikes and would run late night services.
But most train companies travelling to and from Liverpool have a limited service as a result of the strike action, according to National Rail.
Eurovision final: 10 things to look out for
National Express said it had added 33 extra services to Liverpool to help fans get to Eurovision.
Train companies have warned there will be “little or no services” across large areas of the network and said passengers should be prepared for disruption on the days immediately after the strikes.
Speaking at a picket line outside London Euston station, Mr Lynch said was the last Saturday of the union’s six-month mandate in which it could strike.
He then told BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme: “We’ve not targeted Wembley or Liverpool or any of the activities that people get up to” – a reference to both Eurovision and to the football National League play-off final at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.
“There isn’t a day where people aren’t undertaking important activities, in business life or personal life.
“We don’t set the date of Eurovision. We don’t set the anti-trade union laws that require us to have a mandate that expires after six months.”
He said the union “wouldn’t target a cup final”, but did not rule out considering strikes taking place on 3 June, when the men’s FA Cup final and Scottish Cup final will be held.
Future strike dates could be announced as early as next week, he said, adding that the union was available to meet with the government and employers at any time to try to agree a deal.
He has written to the transport secretary calling for an special summit between ministers, train companies and unions to end chaos on the railways.
In a statement, the Department for Transport said RMT members should be allowed to vote on the latest pay offer.
“Since coming into office, ministers have met with the RMT leadership four times and helped facilitate three fair pay offers from employers,” it said.
“It’s now time for unions to give their members democratic say on their future.”
Which lines are affected?
The following rail operators will be impacted:
Avanti West Coast, c2c, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Gatwick Express, Great Northern, GWR, Greater Anglia (including Stansted Express), Heathrow Express, LNER, London Northwestern Railway, Northern, South Western Railway, Southeastern, Southern, Thameslink, TransPennine Express, and West Midlands Railway.
Find out more here.
The Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents 14 train companies, said rail users should plan ahead and check services before travel. It warned that with fewer services running there would be “wide variations”.
Rebecca Dane-Alderman was planning to travel from Milton Keynes to Worthing to watch the Eurovision final with her best friend – a tradition they have shared every year, except for during the coronavirus pandemic.
She said most of Friday was spent trying to find alternative routes, but they were unsuccessful, so instead will watch it in separate locations over a video call.
She told BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme: “Most of yesterday I was quite sad and I felt quite devastated by it all.
“I know there are bigger problems in the world, but it was just something that, like I said is a tradition to us, and we were really looking forward to doing.
“I really hope there is some sort of resolution soon… Because it impacts people in a multitude of ways and less obvious ways than people can imagine.”
How much are rail workers paid?
The RDG offered rail workers a backdated pay rise of 5% for 2022.
A second year’s pay rise was dependent on reforms being negotiated.
Mr Harper has called on the RMT to allow its members to have a vote on the offer that the RDG has put forward.
But Mr Lynch said the RDG had “torpedoed” the talks aimed at ending the long-running dispute because agreement would have prohibited further industrial action.
He told BBC One’s Breakfast: “We haven’t got enough people, and our members, and Aslef members, are having to work extended shifts, extra days, six and seven days out of the week, when they’re sick and tired of it.
“They should be able to earn a living within the working week that’s in their contract.”
Responding in a statement, the RDG said the RMT had “time and time again… blocked the deal negotiated line by line by its top team from going out to its membership for a vote”.
“It’s time the union leadership and executive finally agreed on what they want from these negotiations,” it added.
It said in a statement it was “time the union leadership and executive finally agreed on what they want from these negotiations”.
Meanwhile, train drivers with Aslef have rejected a two-year offer which would see members receive a backdated pay rise of 4% for 2022 and a 4% increase this year.
However, there has been some resolution between the rail industry and the unions. A revised offer from Network Rail, which owns and operates the UK’s railway infrastructure, was accepted by RMT members on 20 March, ending that separate dispute.
Aslef drivers will strike again on 31 May and 3 June, affecting services across on the day of the FA Cup final in England and the Scottish Cup final.

The complete history of electric cars | All about electric cars
The history of electric cars dates back to the early 19th century when inventors started experimenting with electricity as a means of powering vehicles. The first electric car was built in 1832 by Scottish inventor Robert Anderson, but it was not until the late 1800s that electric cars became more popular.
In 1891, William Morrison built the first successful electric car in the United States. The car had a range of about 13 miles and could reach a top speed of around 14 miles per hour. Electric cars quickly gained popularity in cities due to their quiet operation and lack of pollution.
By the turn of the century, electric cars were outselling gasoline-powered cars in many cities across the United States. However, improvements in gasoline engines and the discovery of large oil reserves led to a decline in electric car sales.
In the 1960s and 1970s, concerns about air pollution and fuel shortages led to renewed interest in electric cars. Several companies, including General Motors and Ford, developed experimental electric vehicles during this time.
In the 1990s, California introduced regulations requiring automakers to produce zero-emission vehicles, including electric cars. This led to a resurgence in electric car development and production.
The first modern mass-produced electric car was the General Motors EV1, which was introduced in California in 1996. However, due to low demand and pressure from oil companies and auto dealerships, GM discontinued production of the EV1 in 2003.
In recent years, advances in battery technology have made electric cars more practical for everyday use. Tesla Motors has been at the forefront of this movement with its high-performance Model S sedan and Model X SUV.
Today, there are dozens of different models of electric cars available from various manufacturers around the world. Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular due to their environmental benefits and lower operating costs compared to gasoline-powered vehicles.
In conclusion, while there have been many ups and downs in the history of electric cars, they are now poised to become a major force in the automotive industry. With continued advancements in battery technology and increasing demand for environmentally-friendly transportation options, electric cars are likely to become even more prevalent in the coming years.

If you are thinking of traveling to Belfast, North Ireland, you are in the right place. Belfast is a combination of the Irish words "beal" meaning mouth and "feirste" meaning beach. The city in the North of Ireland is surrounded by low hills. This small city with an area of 115 square kilometers is also the capital of Northern Ireland. The city got its original name in the 17th century when King James I decided to mix the Protestant Scottish and English population in Ulster. Belfast, which gained importance as a result of activities such as shipbuilding and trade, was declared the capital of Northern Ireland after the Irish War of Independence in 1912. CRIEFF HYDRO FAMILY OF HOTELS BECOMES FIRST SCOTTISH HOTEL GROUP TO SWITCH TO GREENTECK GLOBAL’S 100% NATURAL CLEANING SOLUTIONS
Tumblr media
Following the partnership earlier this month between GreenTeck Global and Alliance Scotland, Crieff Hydro Family of Hotels has become Alliance’s first Scottish client to adopt GreenTeck Global’s natural cleaning solutions.
Crieff Hydro Family of Hotels has committed to roll out the chemical-free AquaTeck SC100 cleaning system – a 100% natural, multipurpose sanitiser and cost-effective cleaner produced on tap – across its eight-hotel Scottish portfolio.
The hotel group’s decision to replace all its general front-of house cleaning products for GreenTeck Global’s COSHH-free alternative follows a successful four-month trial at Crieff Hydro Hotel. Between February and June this year, the on-site AquaTeck SC100 production system helped the hotel save the equivalent of 2,430 single-use plastic bottles, while reducing its spend on chemical cleaning products by around £450 per month.
The AquaTeck SC100 system uses ordinary tap water, fed through a standard water softener and food-grade salt, to produce up to two litres of non-toxic solution every minute. This allows companies to refill their cleaning bottles on-site with a chemical-free all-purpose sanitising solution that can be applied directly to surfaces, mops, buckets and even industrial-floor cleaners. Once finished, the solution can be safely tipped away; a process which has the added benefits of helping keep drains clean.
The environmentally-friendly system maximises the effective cleaning properties of hypochlorous acid (HOCL) – a naturally occurring steriliser – and eliminates the need for added detergents. As the most powerful natural disinfectant available, HOCL destroys 99.99% of all bacteria, pathogens, and viruses as well as destroying odours and is approximately 80 times more effective than bleach, thereby delivering the highest levels of cleanliness via a sustainable sanitising solution that is non-allergenic and safe for skin, as well as the environment.
In addition to being simple to use and significantly reducing plastic waste, supply chain concerns and operating costs, the switch to a sustainable non-toxic solution that can be safely disposed of, HOCL does not require COSHH and the associated hotel staff safety training.
Speaking of their switch, Stephen Leckie, Chairman and CEO of Crieff Hydro Family of Hotels, said: “As consumers as well as operators, we’re all increasingly mindful of the need to adopt more energy-conscious and environmentally-friendly habits into our everyday lives.
“We continuously review our suppliers and processes in order to make changes where we can. We’ve been looking at lots of aspects of the business, even switching to eco-friendly bedding.
“The switch to the AquaTeck SC100 has been a simple yet hugely effective way for us to cut costs and improve our carbon footprint while maintaining hygiene levels.”
David Thurston, founder and CEO of GreenTeck Global, said: “We recognise that hotels have a strong duty of care to employees as well as guests, and the pandemic highlighted the vital role that a property’s health and safety measures play in delivering peace of mind for all visitors.
“We’re therefore delighted that Crieff Hydro Family of Hotels has already seen first-hand the benefits our chemical-free systems offer. And we hope these early adopters of greener cleaning solutions will inspire more hospitality organisations within Alliance’s network to embrace more sustainable working practices.”
As part of the five-year distribution agreement, Alliance Scotland a leading provider of cleaning and janitorial solutions in Scotland, represent GreenTeck Global’s products across all sectors, from local authorities and public transport bodies to hospitality companies.

On May 10th 1850 Thomas Lipton, founder of the Lipton's grocery chain was born in Glasgow.
Before the big supermarkets took over we lhad ots of wee ones, every street had a Liptons, or a Galbraith even a Templetons!
Liptons was one of the originals started by a guy from Glasgow who built an empire and the tea brand still bares his name.
Born in a tenement flat in Crown Street, the Gorbals, Liptons parents were Irish and had left the Emerald Isle during the potato famine, the smallholding their family had farmed on for generations no longer viable they settled in Glasgow. 'Tommy' Lipton was educated at St. Andrew's Parish School close to Glasgow Green and by the time Tommy was 12 his parents had a shop in the street they lived selling ham, butter, and eggs. It was with the aim of supplementing his parents' limited income that Thomas Lipton left school at the age of thirteen and found employment as a printer's errand boy, and later as a shirtcutter. He also enrolled at a night school, the Gorbals Youth's School, during this period. He then found work as a cabin boy a steamer running between Glasgow and Belfast and was captivated by life aboard the ship and the stories told by sailors who had traveled to the US After being let go by the steamer company, Lipton quickly used the wages he had saved to purchase passage on a ship bound for the U.S., where he would spend five years working and traveling all over the country.
Back in Scotland on his 21st birthday, In 1871 Lipton opened his firstown shop at 101 Stobcross Street in Glasgow. In the heart of industrial Glasgow, full of smoke and fog, the shop was said to be so brightly lit that at night it became a beacon in the street. Goods were stacked in the American fashion, not for the convenience of the proprietors, but with the purpose of catching the customers’ attention. Lipton used another selling technique learned from his time in the States and from his Mother's shop.
When his parents had opened their small shop, Mrs. Lipton, rather than deal with middlemen at the markets, dealt directly with the farmers of her homeland. Lipton followed this example. He bought his bacon, eggs, butter and other produce directly from Irish farmers. The firm traded as a supermarket until 1982 when another group bought the shops that were to become Presto’s, the decision was made as they wanted to solely concentrate on the Tea business which it does to this day, in 2009 Lipton received a Corporate Green Globe Award for its work with the Rainforest Alliance.
As well as the tea and the shops but Lipton was also a keen sailor, he holds a place in the America’s Cup heart as being the most reliably consistent and deftly congenial loser. Five times he challenged for the Cup, five times being defeated. Despite his best laid plans and momentous effort to win the cup, the tea magnate simply didn’t cut the mustard. Nonetheless, he did have a penchant for beautiful boats. His last challenger, Shamrock V, never really stood a chance of winning the race but it did win marks for pure beauty. His well-publicised efforts to win the cup, which earned him a specially designed cup for “the best of all losers”, and also made his tea famous in the United States.
During the first world war Thomas Lipton helped organisations of medical volunteers. He placed his yachts at the disposal of the Red Cross, the Scottish Women's Hospitals Committee of Dr. Elsie Inglis, the Serbian Supporting Fund, etc., for the transport of medical volunteers (doctors and nurses) and medical supplies. Not content with just allowing his boats to be used he also took a keen interest in the work of Elsie Inglis and the womans hospital, visiting Serbia, where he insisted on humble lodgings and was renowned for his humility and modesty. .In addition to visiting many hospitals, where he encouraged doctors, nurses and soldiers, he found time to attend traditional fairs and to take a part in blackberry gathering and fishing. Sir Thomas Lipton was proclaimed an honorary citizen of the city of Niš.
Lipton even made the cover of Time magazine during 1924. He was knighted in 1901. Sir Thomas Lipton passed away on 2nd October 1931 in London and is buried alongside his parents and siblings in Glasgow's Southern Necropolis, his grave, like the man himself, a humble, simple understated affair, he bequeathed the majority of his fortune to his native city of Glasgow, including his yachting trophies, which are now on display at the Kelvingrove Gallery.

The late 17th century was a strange age for European colonialism. The New World had been parcelled up long before; the Scramble for Africa was still centuries away. Foreign expeditions were fragile things, highly vulnerable to disease, logistical mishaps and war. It was clear, however, that colonies could be forced to yield up enormous wealth.
One country in desperate need of enormous wealth? Scotland. The crowns of Scotland and England had been united in the person of James I for generations, but there was as yet no real political union. What there was on this ‘sterile crag’ was a mess: Minor civil wars, climate-induced famines, declining trade and industry, a capital-M Massacre at Glencoe. The government was more or less broke and the overall population wasn’t much better off. They cast around for a magic bullet[...]
The Company of Scotland was chartered with the intent to trade in “Africa and the Indies.” The problem? England, of course. The East India Company had exactly zero interest in enabling the growth of a Scottish competitor, and contrived to block funding for any such project from south of the border.
A trimmed down mission — it was now the Company of Scotland for Trading to Africa — still managed to raise a significant amount of cash, despite the population being broke. £400,000 was invested in a matter of weeks. That might not sound like a lot now, but the total amount of capital in Scotland at the time is estimated as on the order of £2,000,000. In other words, 20 percent of the available money in the whole country was marked for this project.
When one fifth of an entire country’s capital is invested in a scheme, one would expect that said scheme wouldn’t immediately change in every detail. But that reckons without my good and dear friend William Paterson. Paterson was one of the most influential men of the age, a slave-trading (ergo shithead) co-founder of the Bank of England.
[...]
The English and Dutch controlled the route to the East Indies. In Paterson’s day, that involved a long trip down Africa’s Atlantic coast, around the Cape of Good Hope and up through the Indian Ocean. But a simple look at the map gave another possibility: go west.
This was, of course, what Christopher Columbus was attempting to achieve when he stumbled upon the Americas in 1492 and launched a chain of events that virtually annihilated the human populations of two whole continents. By 1698, the geography was far better known. Weathering Cape Horn from the Atlantic was a nightmarish venture, which ruled out a purely oceanic route west from Europe to the East Indies.
Paterson’s mega-brain realised, however, that a route need not be purely oceanic. The Isthmus of Darien (you know it as Panama), for some reason not yet properly colonised by the Spanish, was narrow enough to transport goods overland. If rival powers controlled the eastern route, Scotland’s response, the strategic thrust which would reverse their economic misfortune, must be to forge a western one. They would colonise Darien.
[...]
The Darien Scheme had been doomed from the outset. While Spain didn’t have an active presence on the isthmus, it controlled the area and was totally unwilling to tolerate a foreign presence threatening its colonial wealth. The Dutch and English, meanwhile, were totally unwilling to provoke the Spanish in support of an enterprise that was actually aimed at themselves. The colonists had to face the Spanish response alone.
Meanwhile, the reports of New Edinburgh’s paradisical qualities had been vastly overstated. The anchorage in the Bay of Caledonia was nowhere near as good as had been reported. There was not enough food, and what little there was didn’t agree with the colonists. Natives of the actual Caledonia suffered in the tropical heat and perished daily from malaria. The letters home were an exercise in denial and misdirection. The colony had failed with great loss of life, and the survivors had evacuated to the English colonies in North America.
[...]
In Charles II’s opinion, which counted for a bit, the isthmus was rather less available than Paterson and his hangers-on had believed. Spain had been in possession of Darien for hundreds of years. It was from the isthmus that the Pacific had first been sighted, in 1513. The reason that there wasn’t an actual colony there is because it was a malaria-ridden hellhole which would almost certainly kill any European stupid enough to try living there.
Just to make sure, though, the Empire sent 11 ships and a whole army to stamp out the scheme once and for all. The besieged, succumbing to the same afflictions which had wiped out the first wave of colonists, had no strength or stomach for a fight. They opted to surrender. Here one more problem manifested itself: despite the aim of planting a colony in the heart of Spanish America, nobody thought it would be a good idea to bring along a Spanish speaker.
The Darien Scheme was dissolved as it deserved, in broken and barely comprehensible Latin, against a background of farce and death. The fallout of the collapse was so severe that within ten years Scotland had been forced to acquiesce to the Act of Union, joining itself to England to form the United Kingdom. In partnership with their new colleagues, they got more competent at the whole ‘colonialism’ thing.

Rail strikes: RMT boss calls for meeting with Sunak
PA Media
The boss of the biggest rail workers’ union has called on the prime minister to meet him in an attempt to resolve the long-running strike action.
Rail workers in Britain have been locked in a dispute over pay, jobs and working conditions since the summer.
In a letter to Rishi Sunak, the RMT union’s general secretary, Mick Lynch, said talks between the two men was now the best way forward.
The next round of strikes is due to start next week.
Passengers have been warned only to travel by train if absolutely necessary during the two 48-hour strikes on Tuesday and Friday. There will be no trains in some places.
The action is being staged by RMT members at Network Rail and 14 train companies – alongside other rail workers in the TSSA and Unite unions.
When are the next train strikes?
The strikes taking place in December
Passengers warned not to travel by train next week
The RMT is involved in two sets of talks – one with Network Rail and one with the train operating companies, represented by the Rail Delivery Group.
Mr Lynch said that from press reports, Transport Secretary Mark Harper’s appearance at the Transport Committee this week and from what he has been directly told by the Rail Delivery Group’s negotiators, it was clear that Downing Street is “directing the mandate for the rail companies and has torpedoed the talks”.
In his letter, he told Mr Sunak: “I now believe that a meeting with yourself represents the best prospect of any renewed progress.
“We have a duty to explore every possible option for settling this dispute and I’m willing to do my part. I hope you will agree to meet me.”
The RMT has accused the government of disrupting the resolution process by adding the extension of Driver Only Operation – meaning drivers would operate train doors in more places – into the offer from the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which was swiftly rejected.
The Rail Delivery Group has insisted that Driver Only Operation does not mean staff will be removed from trains.
But the Department of Transport insists that the inclusion of driver only operated doors were a part of the pay deal from the start of negotiations and described them as “essential to fund pay fund offers and modernise the railways”.
In its offer to the union, it said that it would allow staff on board to focus on other safety issues, as well as looking after customers or selling tickets.
It has also disputed the union’s claim that it would compromise passenger safety, with these types of services already running for almost 40 years.

Speaking in front of a Commons Committee earlier this week, the transport secretary was asked repeatedly if reports the Treasury or Number 10 had inserted the change around these types of services into the RDG’s offer, were true.
He did not directly answer, saying reform was necessary to drive the savings but he was “not going to provide a running commentary”.
A spokesman for the Department for Transport said then that: “It’s incredibly disappointing that, despite a new and improved deal offering job security and a fair pay rise, the RMT continues to hold Christmas hostage with more damaging strikes.”
He added: “The government has played its part by facilitating a fair and decent offer and the RMT and its members should vote this deal through and end this harmful disruption.”
The RMT has rejected the RDG offer which included a 4% pay rise both this year and next. It has decided to put Network Rail’s offer, which includes a 5% pay rise this year and a 4% rise next year, to its members in an electronic referendum, but has called for it to be rejected.
Mr Lynch noted RMT has resolved disputes with rail operators in Scotland and Wales.
“Where the Scottish and Welsh governments have had responsibility for mandates, pay settlements for 2022 have been agreed and neither of these settlements have been conditional on cutting staffing, and eroding safety, security and accessibility,” he added.
The rail industry is not the only sector to face disruption, as demands grow for better working conditions and pay increases in line with rising prices.
But it is under pressure to save money after the pandemic left a hole in its finances, and bosses say reforms are needed to modernise the railway and make pay rises affordable.

Winning at Life
As long-time readers will know, my life has, historically, been something of a car crash. I started writing this blog over a decade ago when I started university- an institution that I expected to be a hotbed of rebellion and independent thinking, but which turned out to be a factory for stamping out interchangeable, social-climbing, affluence-chasing berks. After awhile, I lost any sense of what I was doing there and just sort of drifted. I then spent my twenties pinballing between ill-advised relationships (often in budget hotel rooms) and getting my heart broken. During that time, I also stumbled into three jobs, all of which I hated and quit in spectacular fashion. Online, I spent the majority of time inviting the ire of very large sections of the populations and laughing at their frustration (who remembers that time I pissed off every Beyoncé fan on the planet- that was a personal highlight). I commanded a loyal audience, but beyond that little circle I gloried in being universally reviled. The right-wing hated me because I’m a socialist and generally believe that people deserve better treatment at the hands of their civilisation and because I’m quite liberal and also believe that, outside of supporting the welfare state where possible, people really should just be left alone. Liberals, however, also hated me, because I’ve never had any patience for virtue-signalling or folks who hide behind their oppressed status (real or sometimes imagined) as an excuse for being bullying, shouty cunts- and let’s be honest, modern liberalism is mainly about finding excuses to be cunts. Which seems redundant. The right-wing already have the monopoly on being fucking appalling, despicable people. But I digress.
My point is that I wrote well and entertainingly in large part because my life was kind of a wreck and because I was a belligerent walking anachronism, eternally odds with the society in which I lived. However, the reverse is also true. I have less to write about nowadays because I’m, er, happy. I mean, I’ve never really been unhappy for a sustained period, but my emotional spectrum was delineated by degrees of savage joy and blind fury rather than more normal, humane feelings. Nowadays, things are different. Quite a lot has happened since we last spoke dear reader. Not least, I’m engaged to be married.
I’ll give you a minute to wipe the look of slack-jawed yokel incredulity off your face, then I’ll explain what I’m on about. Done? Okay. Well, between COVID waves, I met an incredible woman- a tremendous geek with a penchant for binge-watching sci-fi nonsense and Agatha Christie’s Poirot; an adventurous soul who wants to take trips with me and see all the strange beauty my native isle has to offer, from the Northern lights playing over the Scottish Highlands to the brilliant blue waters of Cornwall and the hilariously misnamed English Riviera; a clever-clogs with a love of word-games like Scrabble who encourages me to write and improve my own fiction. She’s a joker, she’s a smoker, she’s a midnight toker, and she’s mine. It doesn’t hurt that she’s nearly 400lbs of hotness, either. To cut a long story short, I went up to visit her before I knew that another wave of COVID was going to hit and ended up unable to return home due to transport restrictions. Over a year later, things are finally getting back to normal, but we just work well together- well enough that I want to spend the rest of our lives together and so does she.
Another reason for my unaccustomed happiness is that I’ve now moved out of London to be with her. London was a cesspool and being there meant I was near the epicentre of British culture. Everywhere I looked, I was continually reminded of everything wrong with our dying, lunatic society. Sometimes it was something major: seeing a whole street that was no longer a public thoroughfare but a privatised domain with its own security staff who could move on anyone they didn’t like the look of. Sometimes it was something minor, like spotting Jodie Whittaker’s talentless fucking face adorning a billboard advertising the latest post-shitgate era of the once great Doctor Who (no, I will never fucking drop that). It was like having a splinter in my brain. Everywhere I looked, there was a fresh reason to be angry. I’m currently living in a small town on the edge of the Durham Dales. Nowadays, everywhere I look there’s rolling hills and bleak, barren moors. The sky at sunset here is the purest amber, streaked with pinks and reds. I’m told that, on the clearest, most moonless nights, I should be able to see the Milky Way, not just a scattering of individual stars. Here, I’m reminded that the stupid, mean-spirited, lowest-common denominator bullshit of the human race really doesn’t matter. Nature doesn’t give a fuck and it will remain breathtaking and hostile in equal measure no matter what we do. That soothes my soul in ways I can’t begin to describe. It’s possibly a sign of insanity that I take comfort in the knowledge that if I walked off the road in the wrong direction I could die of exposure before anyone found me, but there’s a rationale at play. I’m not being morbid. Rather, the fact that the landscape is so indifferent to me means that I can be truly isolated if I so choose. I’m not hemmed in by fences and warning signs and the subtle nudges of human expectation. I’m not one to take the foolish risks that would render my environment dangerous, but it’s liberating to know that I could. I may be a socialist who believes that the state should extend a helping hand where required, but I still understand the need not to be taken care of, sometimes.
Of course, there are days when I miss London. I miss its impersonal monumentalism. A curious side-effect of living in a small town is that the few people there are seem to feel more comfortable inflicting their company on me. There seems to be a rule in human nature that the smaller the group, the more it interacts with itself. I sometimes miss being able to walk down a street and not have someone wave to me or strike up a conversation. But I guess that’s what the Dales are for. The mildly annoying friendliness of the locals is a small price to pay for my bride-to-be- my Tess- and my freedom from London and its constant, grating reminders of the dubious achievements of mankind.
I’d like to get into a better schedule for writing and posting blogs, but please don’t be alarmed if some of my fire seems to be extinguished. I haven’t changed my views- they’re no less recondite, complicated and offensive than they ever were- and I make no apologies for the things that I said in anger. It’s just that I’m not angry right now, and so my commentary is liable to be less inflammatory. Until then, bugger off.

ooop its a really long essay
A brief list of why the Tories is pretty rubbish
Before we start, I have a few things to say. As this is intended for UK audiences it might be a little difficult for people outside of the UK to understand the wording of certain topics, I will include somethings that need more explanation up here but if I do not include it here, please feel free to ask down in the comments.
Tory: someone who is a part of the conservative right
Anglicanism: the English church’s version of Christianity
This essay is a PERSUASIVE ESSAY this means its BIASED I hope you could tell from the title. This essay is from the view of someone who is white I am not trying to speak over people of colour on issue like race and I encourage you to look at non-white creators within the UK to get views on this matter.
I am pretty armature when it comes to my writing so do not expect something ground-breaking. And with that out of the way, let us begin.
1.       The tory party we know today was founded in 1834, you would think that would be plenty of time for its members to grow and shape the party into the best organization it can be. But with the tory party still stuck on the same ideas that Anglicanism is the only true religion, and that queer people should not have rights you would think that the party is straight out of the early 20th century, or still stuck on the same ideas the party was founded upon. It does not matter what side you are on and how your choice to view the tory party, people can agree on the prominent figures inside the tory party from old to recent. An example of a prominent tory of old was Winston Churchill a well know racist who also, coincidentally got us through WW2 when he was appointed by Chamberlin. He fostered such views that white people should govern over the “primitive” black and indigenous people of Africa and that Indian people “bred like rabbits”. To anyone who knows their UK history, 1983 was a very eventually year for politics and the UK as a whole. You now have to wear seatbelts in the front seats of cars, the dismembered victims of serial killer Dennis Nielsen are found in his London flat, unemployment was on a record heigh since the 1930’s and a general election found that Margaret Thacher was to be the next prime minister after a landslide win in the polls. Over the course of her 11-year reign of terror she periodised free-market capitalism and privatised public sectors including transport, railways and mines. Then because she did not like the Scottish government, she through a hissy fit and closed all mines in Scotland. Just like that she fucked up the economy, where in the big mining areas of the past are still experiencing the aftershocks today. I remember my granny telling me how she made up food packages for the miners around town and how it was so devastating to the town’s economy. Everyone was unemployed and starving, even my grandad. These examples really show that the Tories will support people who are the worst in British society if they have the parties’ interests at heart. You would think the tory party cannot get any worse but with modern polices such as pledging to get 50,000 nurses for the NHS while only giving them a 1% pay rise, which is only £7.78 for a low band nurse, by 2023. Or being “tough on crime” even though 96.4 crime were recorded by every 1000 people in 2019. You can see how tough they are about carrying out their polices. Let me tell you my favourite of the lot, Boris Johnston, our current PM, wants to limit immigration by 100,000 people. They want to only let in “the brightest and the best,” what a load of shite. Our immigrants are the backbone of our society doing everything people like the Tories would not even dream of doing. Imagen seeing Boris working in a McDonalds or in your local call centre. That fucker probably has not worked a day in his life. According to the migration observatory, migrants make up 50% of the low pay workforce. Either way you look at it, its abysmal. The government should do more for these people that letting them rot in a McDonalds or in a low paying job. If you have taken time to be a model citizen, train and get your qualifications, possibly learn a new langue to mover over to a shitty wet rock I do not see any problem with the government providing necessities to get you started in your new life. We have got the money.
2.       Can I ask you, what side do you think Boris Johnson is on? I will let you think for a moment. The Working class makes up more than half of our population according to the BBC’s class calculator. They say that a government is reflective of the people’s views and I think that is bullshit. Out of the working-class eligible to vote, who do vote, only three in ten vote conservatives. Do you want to know why people in the working class do not vote tory? Because under tory leadership since 2010, 6000,000 more children and their families were forced into poverty. The need for foodbanks skyrocketed 12.3% in the last five years and that is no even accounting for the pandemic. It is clear by now; I have given you enough time to think. “we know whose side Boris Johnson is on- the billionaires, the bankers and the big business.”- labour shadow chancellor, John McDonell. We know the conservatives are very busy committing acts of voter suppression and giving money to their friends instead of caring about you. They are buzzy introducing laws that make it mandatory to have voter ID in order to vote. If you do not make it free people will stop coming. The electoral commissions think 3.5 million voters just will not come back. this is all a part of, “takle[ing] every aspect of electoral fraud”- tory manifesto. It is well known that many rich people have been investing in the party for quite a while. Here is just a few: Anthony Bamford head of machinery in JCB, he gave £12.1 million since 2005. Charles Cayzer owns a shipping tycoon, he gave £480,00. Did you also know, Boris is known to be very generous when it comes to giving back. You’ve probably herd in the news about the conservatives handing out £3mil in contracts to tory owned covid PPE companies over the course of the pandemic. Some of that went to a MP, Nadim Zahawi who is a shareholder in SThree. SThree was given £1mil in contracts over the course of the pandemic. With all the evidence I have given above you’d think the government its rolling in it, I suspect they are but I doesn’t look like it from the outside. They have cut funding to courses drastically, as well as benefit schemes. Like cutting access for eighteen- to twenty-year-olds to the housing benefits. Yet with all the money they been cutting away from services and councils who desperately need it they still have enough money to cough up a commission for a royal yacht named after the duke of Edinburgh, costing over £200 million. Seems sweet does it, name a yacht after the ghoul of Edinburgh, right? You probably know the just of it now, your wrong. Not only is the yacht being paid for by taxpayers, but they are also naming it in honour after a racist. Or how the BBC would phrase his words as “memorable one-liners”. Here is a selection I find quite fitting: “The Philippines must be half empty if you’re all here running the NHS”- while meeting with a Filipino nurse. “If you stay here much longer, you’ll be all slitty-eyed”- he said to a group of British students while on a royal visit to China. My favourite must be “It looks like it was put in by an Indian.”- referring to and old-fashioned fuse box in Edinburgh. He is supposed to be the duke of the bloody place! I really like how one article what I read put it “[Prince Philip] screams out loud what other racists like him have learned how to conceal and camouflage in what they think and project as civilised demeanour.”- Hamid Dabashi.
3.       What I find absolutely astounding, is the Tories inability to show compassion to the people who have nothing. If you did not know the vagrancy act among other things crimeless the homeless and rough sleepers, which is by far a very bad mixture with the recent homelessness statistics, homelessness has risen 28% since labour was last in office and if the Tories continue down the path they are now, it is only going to keep rising. What you would find is most shocking is that there’s solutions for the homeless crisis right in front of us, what the Tories must to not be able to see. Layla Moran of the liberal democrats thinks they “must take a more compassionate and holistic approach, starting by scrapping the vagrancy act”. I think that would be a step forward and away from the old ways of prosecuting people for not being as fortunate as the rest of us, but there is something even more simple than that. Repossessing the 200,000 buildings that have been vacant in the UK for more than six months. Not only would that put a sizeable dent in the houses we need, but it also saves space. The UK is small collection of islands and I do not think the Tories can see that. We do not have the land available to just start building everywhere while leaving all those homes empty and unfilled. Its not a way to solve the housing crisis and its certainly not a way to save the money we supposedly need. Even the homes the Tories are building are left dormant because they are too expensive for the area, they are located in. With the way things are going the Tories will have to build more houses than they ever built before, because by 2041 homelessness is expected to doble. That is 400,000 more households if things do not change -a study by heriot-wat university. The evidence suggests that whatever the Tories are doing to end homelessness it is not working. Everything is not as bleak as I just told you though, the conservative has ended homelessness before. In the hight of the pandemic the conservatives got 90% of all rough sleepers off the streets and put them in hotels or hostels. This helped people apply for benefits, find jobs and get some more permanent assistance. People was helped during the pandemic, but when the funding ran out last July, homeless and the rough sleepers in the hotels and hostels where back out in the streets again. Alone and forgotten by the government that promised to end the very crisis they are apart of years ago. Theis shows that the Tories have the money to help the unfortune but they would rather sit on their arses chatting about what colour they should paint the walls of their house. More recently the Torie introduced a law what will fine people for sleeping in doorways. It really shows what the Tories care about, getting linings for their pockets. The Tories have the money to stop homelessness and when it was a danger to them, they stopped the issue what has been so recuing in our politics for decades. They helped the people who so desperately needed it only to chuck them back into the cold when covid-19 was no longer a danger to them.
4.       The conservatives fail to keep minorities safe in the society that they created. It is not surprise that the Tories are the most incompetent as ever. A study by BBC radio 5 found that hate crimes have doubled since 2013. An optimist would assume that is great, that there must mean that people have been reporting it more, right? Partly so. Although we have seen a rise in reports of hate crimes, the rate of prosecution has dropped down from 20% to just 8%. And that is just the tip of the iceberg, in a survey of faith-based organizations; the home office found that seven in ten of the employees surveyed has never reported a hate crime to the police where one happened. For a country where we are supposed to be the most tolerable it is no surprise that a big portion of the hate crimes committed are ones where the religion the victim followed played a big part. Our population, like many others, is influenced by our politicians. After Boris described Muslim women in burkas as “letterboxes” in an interview; citizen UK found that there where a surge in hate crime directed to Muslim women where the word “letterbox” was used. Again, continuing with the theme of hate crime against religions, Muslims made up half of the statistics in 2018 – 2019. The biggest spike we have seen in the last few years has been to Jewish people, where hate crimes against them have more since doubled. It is not a surprise since people seem to relate being a ‘good’ Jew to being a Zionist. Other minorities like trans youth under sixteen in England and whales now must go through everything that goes with puberty on top of not wanting to have the body you cuntly have all because TERF’s and conservatives do not think puberty blockers should be available to them.  At this point I genuinely think they want trans kids dead, how could you not see that the benefits of puberty blockers far out way the potential consequences. If puberty blockers really where the target they would have taken them of the shelfs completely, but they did not do that did they? They just restricted the rights of an already marginalised group more. Its not just trans kids but the fight for a third gender to finally get recognised is still waging on despite it being a battle since 2018. The government petition has been signed 136,000 times demanding non-binary finally be recognised as a valid gender in the eyes of the law. I hope I can get recognised as well as everyone else. It may not seem a big deal to some of you reading this but it is to thousands. Especially the people who want to go on hormones and medically transition. Because right now I and many other people are restricted and not allowed to get that service. If you are in the UK and you are of age, I urge you to signs the government petition. In other news the conservatives are just now getting to outlawing conversion therapy three years after they announced they would do so. It just shows how the party is not on target. On the topic of not on target let us talk about the increasing number of racial minorities becoming homeless because of lack of funding to their communities. Since the conservatives got into power in the 2010 racial minorities now make up 40% of all homeless despite being only 15% of the current population. It really shows how much they care about anyone who is not white. Yet people like my gran will continue to say they are doing enough for these underfunded communities.
the tory party really has nothing going for them, they are certainly not for the working class, they cannot solve homelessness and they do not give two fucks about minorities. To think anyone would vote form them is just amazing. Its fucking stupid to believe that they are anything but a bunch of rich shites dawdling around and thinking up ways to get more money into their pockets. To end this really all over the place essay, if you vote tory you are a massive twat.

Untamed Spring Fest Day 24: Gentle
Ouyang Zizhen was a gentle soul. He was sweet, kind, and good; loved with his whole heart, romantic, overly sentimental, wonderful. It would’ve been so easy for the entire world to break him or take advantage of him, but that gentle soul came with an absolute backbone of steel. Zizhen didn’t act gentle or sweet or kind or good for praise or to try and show himself up--it was just who he was at his very core.
Business had a way of destroying gentle souls.
And that was perhaps why Jin Ling had turned into--probably--the harshest, most arrogant, most mouthy ‘trophy’ spouse on the entirety of the East Coast. He was determined that his good, kind, gentle, Zizhen would stay that way; had promised Zizhen’s father as much before Mr. Ouyang stopped attending all these functions, and nothing was going to keep him from failing that mission.
“So much for America’s Sweetheart,” Zizhen murmured into Jin Ling’s ear after Jin Ling had loudly scoffed at the group that had just suggested Ouyang Transport was losing their hold at the top of that particular business mountain. “They’re going to take away your Wheaties Box.”
“Never ate a bowl of them in my life anyway,” Jin Ling said with a shrug. He glared daggers at the group until they collectively backed off, disappearing to another corner of this massive garden party in the Hamptons.
He knew when he acted like the spoiled, arrogant, peacock prince it always brought out the questions of why Zizhen stayed with him, but Jin Ling would gladly weather those rumors if it kept the assholes at bay. The one good thing about the Jin’s reputation was that it was almost expected of him to be an arrogant jackass. And he was fine with that reputation, would gladly play into it, as long as it kept the worst of the hovering masses away from his sweet prince.
At least in Boston, or general New England, most people knew to respect them or give them a wide berth. Jin Ling was related to far too many prominent families--either by blood, marriage, or business ties--for little shits eager to dig their claws in or try to pitch their business to bother them. All Jin Ling had to do was mention an uncle--any uncle--or a grandmother--any grandmother--and the little pests scurried back into the dark.
New York was a different place and a different society.
The Zizhens were well known because of their yachts and transport company and their various Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey connections.
Jin Ling was that Olympic archer who became the face of Gucci sportswear for a season.
Those things made people want to talk to them or drag them into their social media posts and it was just so exhausting when they were supposed to be here on vacation. They’d only stopped into this little gathering to be polite to their neighbors.
“Next year we’re going to Maine,” Jin Ling said. He looked around the white tent. “I swear they must all go to the same plastic surgeon because every other one has the same exact nose.”
Zizhen laughed as his arm tightened around Jin Ling’s waist. “They can hear you.”
“Good,” Jin Ling said. He nodded, considered his job here well done, and turned in his boyfriend’s arms. “You made nice with the neighbors, now can we please go home to the dogs? They’re far, far better company.”
“When have I ever denied you anything?”
Jin Ling opened his mouth to respond only to have Zizhen place a soft finger against his lips to silence him.
“And the years of waiting don’t count. We both had to be ready and at the right place in life.”
Jin Ling knew Zizhen was right, but it didn’t mean he wouldn’t forever grumble over those years. And the brief appearance of that Scottish lord. He still couldn’t look at tartan or salmon without becoming irrationally annoyed.
Zizhen laughed, his bright, genuine, beautiful one, that carried above the murmurs of the crowd. It was clear from the shake of his head he knew exactly what Jin Ling was thinking about.
“It was always you,” Zizhen said as he leaned down to capture Jin Ling’s lips in a sweet, soft kiss.
Jin Ling flexed up onto his tiptoes to meet him and didn’t care if it was too much for this crowd; didn’t care if there were going to be photos everywhere in the next twenty minutes; Zizhen was one of the few real and honest people here, brave enough to be himself at all times, and Jin Ling basked in that strength and love and care.
They were cuddled as close as they could be on the walk back to the Ouyang summer home, walking past dunes and beach grass, exchanging small laughs and little kisses as the sun started to set. It was a relief to see their back porch where Daisy and Luna were already pawing at the sliding glass door to get to them.
Inside it was their sanctuary. They’d given the staff two weeks off so they could enjoy their own time and their own vacations. Behind these walls it was just them. And Jin Ling, who had spent most of his life with a house full, found he actually loved when it was just them and the dogs.
But that didn’t mean he’d always want it to be that way.
He smiled as Zizhen greeted their puppies, hugging them both tight in spite of the white fur that was bound to go everywhere. He was gentle and sweet with them as he was with everyone else.
Zizhen would be an outstanding father.
Jin Ling knew that was years ahead in their future, but it settled something in him, right there, as he stood and watched him.
They would have a house full one day. And Zizhen would come home from work with arms open to give hugs to their children and would be pressing kisses to everyone’s foreheads, and asking after homework and how their days went. Jin Ling could see it--perfectly--and it made him grin.
“What’s that smile for?” Zizhen asked as he stood up, one hand still on each of the dogs’ heads.
“Just you,” Jin Ling said. “Just us.”
