Dear Diary,

If I want to go to university, I’ll have to start working extra hard. My bus ride to school is so long that I miss half my first and last class, all my books are second hand, and chores on the commune take up most of my time in the evening. But mama has been trying so hard to fill my brain with anti-government, anti-school system rhetoric that I have to get good grades - that’ll show her. 

And so far it’s working! I excelled in the school’s science fair and I aced my most recent exams. My grades have improved...I just hope it’s enough to impress Britechester University. I want to pursue a distinguished degree in history...

I didn’t want to apply with the stupid name mama gave me, so I went down to the courthouse yesterday and got it changed officially.

Dear Diary,

With only a few days left before graduation, I decided to try and tell Octavia how I felt about her. It went badly...

But she was very nice about it. She still wanted to be friends after we graduate, even though we’re going to different schools. And I feel better now that I’ve told her. Now that I know she doesn’t feel the same way, I can spend more time studying and less time daydreaming.

I was so scared when I went into labour - but Dino stayed with me the whole time, and held my hand, and it was over faster than I thought it would be. Our boy was born right on the floor of Dino’s van. He’s the sweetest little thing I’ve ever seen - we’ve named him Jupiter!

Dear Diary,

Mama always said that public school was an awful place, where the big kids pick on the little ones and they make you write essays about why you love the government. So I was sorta scared for my first day...

But it turned out the school is actually really fun. Growing up out in the woods I only ever played with my siblings, but here there are kids my age to talk with. And they know so much more about the world than I do! They buy clothes at the mall, and watch shows that mom says are ‘too violent’, and some of the older guys even have cars. 

And they’re just as interested in me as I am in them! They knew there was a ‘crazy hippie family’ living out in the woods but they’ve never gotten too close. They wanted to hear about everything - the cabins, the farm, and everyone living there. They were really excited when I told them that mama grows pot in the garden!

I knew she was getting older, but...somehow mom never seemed like someone who could die. 

I’d just returned to the forest with Jupiter when I got the news. I traveled back to San Myshuno for the funeral. Jupe is staying with Grace and Alice - he’s too little to understand what’s going on. 

It’s hardest on Cosme, I think, because he looked after her when the rest of us had moved out. And he’s the most like her out of all of us - brash and confrontational, but really a good person deep down.

I knew I was expecting again, but I didn’t want to tell Michael...what if he left, like Dino did? Of course he realized eventually, but we never really talked about it. When I went into labour, I planned to do it with only Grace and Alice’s help...but it happened on an evening when Mike was here, and he came running when he realized what was going on. In the end, I was glad to have him there. 

My newest daughter is named Thistle - though the plant is known for its sharp leaves, the flowers are beautiful.

Tony didn’t just bring Callia and Martin - he brought my best friends from high school, Grace and Alice! I couldn’t believe it!

When mom said she wanted me to have a proper home, I thought she meant a place in the city - or worse, the suburbs. But that wasn’t it at all. She bought me a bit of land outside the park, deep in the woods, and everyone pitched in to help me build a small cabin there. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect home for me and Jupiter! 

I could tell that Grace and Alice didn’t want to go back to the city. Who would? So I asked them if they’d like to stay here, to live with me out in the woods, away from civilization. The words were barely out of my mouth before they were both saying yes! It’s going to be so fun to live with my two best friends.

Benny’s wedding was a blast. I was flower girl again, just like at Tony’s, and Tony was best man. My nephew Martin was the ringbearer. Jesminder looked just beautiful in her dress, like a fairy princess - Ben was so lovestruck that when he went in for the kiss, he headbutted her and the ceremony had to pause for a few minutes so she could get her balance back. 

The cake they served at the reception was the best I’ve ever had in my entire life...though honestly, Cosme had slipped me a blunt and I was pretty high, so anything would have tasted great.

Daisy gave me a simoleon for the phone. I called mom - I told her everything that’s happened, about the baby, and about Dino leaving. I thought she would say ‘I told you so’. But she didn’t. She told me it was gonna be okay, that she’d drive up and make everything right again. I didn’t know what that meant - I thought probably she was going to pick me up and take me back to the city - but I told her ‘okay’.

The car horn honking woke me up today. It wasn’t just mom - it was mom, and Cosme, and Benny! I’ve never been so happy to see them. I might have cried a bit when they were hugging me...

They also brought Jesminder and Mark. Jesminder and Benny are engaged now, can you believe it? And Mark is living in the apartment with Cosme and mom. Even if my heart is broken, I’m glad my siblings are finding love.

I was joking when I asked, “Where’s Tony, then?”, but mom said, “He’s coming soon. He’s finishing up the paperwork. We’re going to get you settled in a proper home, baby.”

I’ve been so distracted lately, it took me a while to notice it...but I'm expecting again! It must be the baby of one of the travelers who passed through here. Isn’t it beautiful, that he’s off traveling the world, but a part of him is here with me? 

This time, I delivered the baby in the kitchen of the main cabin. It started so quickly that I couldn’t even call the girls in from their foraging - but everything turned out alright, so it didn’t matter. I think I’ll call her Daydream...

It seems far too soon to say goodbye to our little Daydream - but she leaves for Britechester tomorrow! She’s looking so grown up these days, I can hardly believe it. I’ve tried to make her promise to write or call us as often as possible while she’s completing her studies, but I haven’t gotten much of a response...once she’s been away from home for a while, I think she’ll realize how good she had it on the commune, and she’ll be back to us in no time.
