Unfortunately I have more Mike-Ted parallel thoughts related to the two s1 & s4 dinner scenes and recent talk about Mike's eating habits. Mmmmmmmmmmm more ramblings because I have to write something or else I'll explode.

Was inspired by this post by @/aemiron-main about Will clearly noticing Mike isn't eating his dinner. It's been widely said that both the dinner scene in s4 and s1 are clearly paralleled to each other with Mike and his father acting similarily (and I've talked before in depth about what the deeper meaning behind this symbolism is my Mike-Ted parallels essay) but I was thinking: is there another angle to it that I missed?

In the s4 dinner scene Will is arguably staring at Mike's uneaten food. It's subtle and Will doesn't bring it up out loud. Because of that you could say that maybe it's too much of a stretch to assume Will noticed anything or that we're not supposed to notice anything as the audience. Maybe we're just looking too much into it?

BUT looking back to the original s1 scene it's fairly clear that yes, Mike is not eating and Will is noticing it.

What's the last thing Karen says to Ted before she storms off from the table? I hope you're enjoying your chicken Ted.

Opposite to Mike, Ted was inappropriately eating all throughout that scene. Karen watched him and clearly notices this, takes this as Ted caring more about eating his dinner than tending to his children's emotional needs (Mike being upset about Will). Mike storms off and Ted continues to eat (both s4 Mike and s1 Ted take a swig of their drink after the fallout).

Will and Karen are clear parallels here (hell, they're even both sitting in the same place relative to Mike and Ted, respectively). It's just that Karen out loud voices her exasperation at Ted's apparent lack of care through continuously eating while Will keeps his concern about Mike's lack of eating to himself.

There is a focus on food and eating in both these scenes with respect to Mike's lack of eating and Ted eating at inappropriate times.

This happens a lot during s3 and s4 with Mike and Ted, the usage of obvious symbolism (the reoccurance of stuffed bears in s3, the usage of Mike and Ted wearing very similar -usually blue- clothing (even the triangle pocket is similar), a lack of POV which I've talked about before, and the same sentiment about media santanic panic bullshit) with a tagged into more subtle meanings.

I would even argue this is continuous across s4, not just this scene. Others have pointed out that in many of Mike's scenes in s4 include him holding drinks/food that he isnt eating/drinking when he should be. Ted doesn't get as many scenes in general obviously but in a tense church scene about a serial killer on the loose he's (quite inappropriately) the only person holding donuts.

Mike subtly being shown to not be eating (and no one notices sans Will) while Ted is repeatedly shown to be eating at inappropriate times and coming off as uncaring of the situation to others.

Idk I just think it's interesting.

Salah satu hidangan chinese yang selalu membuat mata terbelalak penasaran karena hidangan ini selalu digantung di tempat yang dapat terlihat oleh pengunjung restoran. Dengan visual warna glaze cokelat yang bersinar, hidangan ini dapat memikat siapapun yang melihatnya. Tidak hanya untuk menarik perhatian pengunjung, bebek yang digantung bertujuan agar proses pemisahan daging dari kulitnya menjadi lebih mudah. Alhasil kulit dan daging bebek dapat terpisah dengan cantik dan memiliki dua tekstur yang berbeda. Bebek peking memiliki tekstur crispy pada bagian kulitnya dan juicy di bagian dagingnya. Hidangan ini cocok untuk dipadukan bersama bawang bombay, daun bawang, timun, dan saus hoisin (sweet bean sauce) kemudian di-wrap dengan pancake.

Nasi tersebut kemudian disajikan bersama dengan kondimen lain seperti seafood mentah, seafood matang, telur, tobiko, sayuran, dan lain-lain. Selain disajikan sebagai nasi dan ikan saja, sushi juga dapat disajikan dengan rumput laut sebagai pembungkus.

Korea Selatan memiliki hidangan yang mirip dengan sushi yang dikenal dengan sebutan kimbap. Kimbab terdiri atas berbagai kondimen seperti telur, sayuran, danmuji (yellow pickled radish), crab stick, dan lain-lain yang di-wrap menggunakan nasi dan rumput laut. Kimbap kemudian dipotong menyerupai sushi kemudian disajikan dengan mengoleskan minyak wijen dan menaburkan wijen di atas kimbap. Hidangan khas Indonesia yang di-wrap menggunakan nasi salah satunya adalah arem-arem. Aku pernah membuat hidangan ini bersama dengan mamakku. Nasi yang telah dimasak menggunakan santan dan bumbu kemudian diisi dengan orek basah tempe dan tahu. Perbedaannya dengan sushi adalah hidangan ini dibungkus menggunakan daun pisang dengan ukuran sedikit besar sedangkan sushi tidak dibungkus daun dan memiliki ukuran bite-sized.

Chocolate, Mexico

Salah satu rasa yang selalu aku pilih ketika pergi ke suatu tempat yang menjual hidangan manis. Alasannya sederhana saja. Cokelat tidak pernah salah. Cokelat dapat diolah menjadi berbagai hidangan yang tersebar di seluruh dunia. Tidak heran jika berbagai hidangan selalu memiliki rasa ini sebagai salah satu variasi dan inovasi. Meskipun bermunculan rasa baru seperti green tea, taro, red velvet, namun aku tetap memilih cokelat sebagai salah satu rasa pilihanku. Salah satu fenomena cokelat yang terekspos belakangan ini adalah munculnya varian cokelat mint. Berbagai hidangan seperti chocolate bar, es krim, permen, bahkan minuman dingin telah memiliki varian rasa ini. Beberapa orang menyukai perpaduan rasa cokelat dan sensasi pedas semriwing yang berasal dari mint namun beberapa orang kurang menyukainya. Mereka (termasuk aku) kurang menyukai varian ini karena mereka beranggapan bahwa rasa mint pada cokelat mint mirip seperti pasta gigi.

Neapolitan Pizza, Italy

Tentu kita sudah tidak asing dengan hidangan satu ini, pizza. Roti tipis yang dipanggang dengan berbagai topping di atasnya. Namun neapolitan pizza atau naples-style pizza merupakan salah satu yang cukup unik. Pizza ini khusus menggunakan dua jenis topping, yaitu tomat dan keju mozarella. Tomat yang digunakan umumnya adalah antara tomat san marzano atau tomat podomorino dan keju yang digunakan adalah keju mozzarella di bufala campana. Dua varian neapolitan pizza yang terkenal adalah pizza margherita dan pizza marinara. Pizza margherita terbuat dari tomat, keju mozarella, daun basil, olive oil, dan keju parmesan sebagai taburan. Berbeda dengan margherita, pizza marinara terbuat dari tomat, bawang putih, oregano, dan olive oil. Jika dilihat dari bahannya, pizza margherita akan cenderung memiliki rasa keju yang cukup kuat dengan aroma segar dari daun basil. Sementara itu, pizza marinara akan memiliki aroma gurih sedap yang kuat karena adanya bawang putih dan oregano di dalamnya.

Massaman Curry, Thailand

Kari massaman merupakan perpaduan antara rempah kari khas India (kapulaga, cengkeh, bunga lawang, daun salam, jinten, pala, bunga pala, dan kayu manis) dengan bumbu khas Thailand (cabai, ketumbar, sereh, lengkuas, merica, terasi, bawang merah, dan bawang putih). Berbagai protein dapat digunakan untuk kari ini, seperti ayam, sapi, domba, bebek, rusa, kambing, tahu, dan lain-lain. Tidak hanya protein, kari massaman juga dimasak bersama bahan lain seperti kentang, bawang bombay, kacang, santan, dan krim. Dengan bahan-bahan tersebut, kari ini memiliki perpaduan sempurna antara rasa gurih khas Thailand dengan aroma khas kari India yang sangat kuat. Berbeda dengan kari khas Thailand yang bercita rasa gurih, kari khas Jepang cenderung memiliki cita rasa manis yang berasal dari wortel dan bawang bombay. I met Akio san outside of Disk Union in Shimokitazawa. His scooter was parked next to my bike and when I saw him about to stash some records under the scooter, I sparked a chat with him. He’s an acupuncturist caregiver with many patients around Shimokita. He said the kinda care he offers provides great relief to patients in pain but is quite exhausting and stressful work for him and that picking up new music everyday provides him with his relief. I said, “That’s great work but, every day?” He said, yes, that he comes everyday, without fail to the record store. I asked him what genre of music he mainly likes, and he replied, “Santana, I pretty much only listen to Santana, I have nearly everything he’s ever released. I’m a Santana ‘completist’. Do you know Santana?” “Pffft, Do I know Santana, of course! Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock?!?! One of the best live performances ever recorded!” “Ah, you really do know Santana” he said with a big smile. Akio told me he’s seen Santan too many times to count and I told him that I had also seen Santana a handful of times too, a couple of years in a row at New Orleans Jazz Festival in the 90s being particularly memorable. He knew those performances and said he looked forward to Santana coming back to Japan. We wished each other well and aimed to say hello next time we’re digging though the crates!
