Bucyrus Historical Society Museum—Scroggs House
202 S. Walnut St.
Bucyrus, OH 44820
When Samuel Norton, from Pennsylvania, reached the site of Bucyrus, OH, in October 1819, the party consisted of eighteen persons. On arriving here they found an old wigwam standing in the woods in what is now the court house yard. This they occupied for three days while the men built a log cabin. In 1820, Mr. Norton built himself another log cabin on the southeast corner of Galen and Spring. This was much larger, double log cabin, two rooms downstairs, two front windows, and a spacious loft. The chimney, for six feet, was actually built of stone. It was the palatial residence of the county, one that well became the future founder of Bucyrus. Several years later in 1822, a man surveying what would later become Crawford County, suggested to Sam that he should consider having some of the land he owned surveyed and plotted to create a town. Col. James Kilbourne of Worthington, the surveyor, thought that this land where he built his first log cabin, would be an excellent spot for a future town.
The name Bucyrus has been the subject to much research to discover why it was so named. An examination of the original contract between Mr. Norton and Col. Kilbourne will prove that the town was named Bucyrus from the beginning. It was spelled the same way in the first legal papers of the village. Col. Kilbourne desired to have a name for this town different from that of any place inhabited by man since the world was created. He succeeded. Some say that one of Col. Kilbourne's favorite historical characters was Cyrus, the Persian general, and that the town was named for him. The country around this town was very beautiful so Col. Kilbourne prefixed the syllable "bu" for beautiful declaring that the name should mean beautiful Cyrus." Other authorities say that Bucyrus is an Egyptian word, the name being derived from Busiris, a city of ancient Egypt near the Nile. The word pleased his fancy and he changed it to Bucyrus as a good sounding name.
The Bucyrus Historical Society, located in Crawford County, Ohio, was founded to promote the education of area residents regarding the history of our community. John Scroggs first bought the lot in the spring of 1839 from the original town lots, of Norton and Kilbourne. Today, not one of the original lots is in the hands of any of the original owners' descendants. The lot that has been longest in the same family is the Scroggs lot (south-east corner of Walnut and Rensselaer). The lot went from John Scroggs into the possession of his son Jacob who built the present residence in 1873. On his death, and the death of his wife, it came into the possession of his son Charles J. Scroggs who passed away in 1944. His wife resided there until her death. Their only child, Betty, married and, living in Nashville, Tennessee, sold the house to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, in 1966. However, when the Bucyrus Historical Society organized in 1969 and was seeking a home with historical background, it purchased the Scroggs house from the church, in 1970.
