XX Your Lord does know
that you stand in vigil
nearly two thirds of the night,
or half or a third,
and so does a group
of those with you.
And God regulates
the night and the day,
knowing you won’t calculate it,
thus letting up on you.
So read as much as is easy from the Qur’an.
God knows there will be
those among you who are sick,
and others traveling the land
seeking the bounty of God,
and others fighting for the sake of God:
so read as much of it as is easy,
and pray regularly, and give alms,
lending a good loan to God.
For whatever good you advance
for the sake of your souls,
you will find it with God,
who is best and greatest in recompense.
And seek forgiveness from God,
For God is the epitome of
forgiveness and mercy.
II
XIX This is a reminder;
let whoever will
take a path to his Lord.

XVIII and the sky split apart?
That promise will inevitably be fulfilled.
XVII so how will you be wary, if you scoff,
of a day that will make children grey,
XVI Pharaoh defied the messenger,
so We punished him severely:
XV We have sent you a messenger
as a witness regarding you,
as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh;
XIV the day the earth quakes,
and the mountains too,
with the mountains turning
to disintegrating dunes.
XIII and choking food,
and a painful punishment,
XII for We have fetters and fire,

XI And leave Me to the scoffers
who have comfort and convenience,
and give them a little time,
X and endure what they say patiently,
and remain aloof from them
with a graceful detachment.
IX Lord of the East and the West—
there is no other deity,
so take God as a guardian,
VIII yet remember the name of God,
and devote yourself wholly to God,
VII You do have a long course during the day,
VI Indeed, rising by night is most intense as a discipline,
and most appropriate
V for We will send you a weighty word.

(73) The One Wrapping Himself (المزمل Al-Muzzammil) Meccan (LXXIII) (Enfolded)
A sura that is part very early Meccan, part Medinan (verse 20). This verse describes how God relaxed the early regime of devotion first imposed on the Prophet (in verses 1–9) to prepare him for the weighty message. The Prophet is urged to be patient (verses 10–11), told of the punishment that awaits the Meccan disbelievers in Hell (verses 12–14), and reminded of the punishment that befell Pharaoh in this life (verses 15–16).

delivered the messages of their Lord,
who encompasses all they have
and takes account of everything.”
27 “except a divinely chosen messenger:
then God sends scouts before and after him,
26 “knowing the unseen
without revealing the divine secret to anyone,
25 Say, “I don’t know whether
what you are warned of is close,
or if my Lord has given it time,
24 When at last they see
what they were warned about,
they will know who is weaker in support
and is of less account.
23 “except communication from God,
and divine messages.
And for any who defy God
and the messenger of God,
there is the fire of hell,
where they’ll remain forever.”
22 Say, “No one can grant me
shelter from God,
and I could not find
any refuge but God,
21 Say, “For my part,
I don’t have the power
to do you harm
or guide you right.”
20 Say, “I only pray to my Lord,
with whom I associate no one.”
II
19 When Abdullah,
the Servant of God,
stands to pray to God,
they virtually form
a mass around him.
18 The places of worship are for God;
so don’t pray to anyone besides God.
17 to test them with it.
And if anyone turns away
from mindfulness of his Lord,
that will cause him mounting pain.
16 If they had stayed on the path upright,
We would have given them plenty of water,
15 “‘while those who are unjust,
they are firewood for hell.’”
14 ‘“Now some of us are devout,
while some of us are unjust.
As for those who are devout,
they strove for integrity;
13 “‘for we believed in the guidance
when we heard it.
And whoever believes in his Lord
fears no withholding of rights
or oppression.

thwart God on earth,
nor can we thwart God by fleeing;
11 “‘as for us, some of us are virtuous,
and some of us are otherwise;
we are divergent in our ways.

or if their Lord wants true direction for them:
9 “‘We used to sit in seats
around there to listen,
but whoever listens now
will find a shooting star
aimed at him.
8 “‘But though we searched for heaven,
we found it occupied by a fierce guard
and filled with shooting stars.
7 “‘for they assumed, as you assume,
that God won’t resurrect anyone.
6 “ ‘Yet there were in fact individual humans
who resorted to particular sprites,
but that increased the pressure on them;
5 “‘we think no human or sprite
should speak any falsehood of God.
4 “‘Though the fools among us
used to speak in a manner
infringing upon the dignity of God,
3 “‘For the status of our Lord is transcendent,
admitting of neither mate nor offspring.
2 “‘It guides to reason, and we believe in it.
So we won’t associate anyone with our Lord.
1 Say, “It has been revealed to me
that a band of sprites listened in,
then said, ‘We have indeed
heard a wondrous Recital!

(72) THE JINN a (Al-JINN) (LXXII) Meccan
A Meccan sura that gives an account of what a group of jinn said when they overheard a recitation of the Qur'an and realized its truth (verses 1–15). This is a lesson to the Meccan Arabs, who are also told that the Prophet can help them only by delivering the Message––God is the All Powerful One (verses 16–28). The disbelievers are threatened with what they will meet on the Day of Judgement (verses 23–7).
