8
12 1/2
Down to breakfast at 9 – From 9 50/60 to 12 20/60 read aloud the 1st 80 pages of volume 2 Hallam on the Middle ages – at 12 1/2 Mr D– (Duffin) and I set off walking – went along the fields to Knavesmire thence into the Bishop Thorpe road home (about 4 miles) – called in our way back by Mrs Price to look at her garden – very neat and nice – sauntered then perhaps 1/4 hour and got home about 2 1/4 – Mrs Best just calling; at the door, on me – she came sat perhaps 1/4 hour and we then walked together to Fisher’s – there parted and I went to the Belcombes’
Talking to Anne and Eli, then Mrs B– (Belcombe) Mrs Milne came in just before I left, and she and Anne walked home with me – Mrs Best told me she had heard from good authority that Sir William Strickland payed three hundred pounds for Bell Fenton last year she herself had only eighty pounds a year – Lady Sisor seems hardly mistress of her own house while Bell Fenton is there so her ladyship wont have her when she is at home – natural enough –
after dinner wrote the above of today – At 8 40/60 Mr D– Duffin and I went to a select party at the Cromptons’ – walked there and back – got home 2 or 3 minutes before 11 – no fan a pocket handkerchief in my hand all the eevening my long sleeved silk gown on did my hair myself there fore felt not well enough dressed and awkward talked chiefly to Henrietta and Margaret C (Crompton) and Mary Preston vexed I had not thought of sitting by and talking a little to Mrs Yorke – came away dissatisfied with myself with my manners altogether this evening saying to myself this has not pleased me let me forget it –
To ride with Miss Mary Preston at 11 Tomorrow morning – Mr Sykes (Christopher) to call for at one on Saturday to see the philosophical society’s collection – a great deal of conversation with Mr S– (Sykes) he mentioned to me a man of the name of Brown here who has invented a new theory of perspective, and a new manner of etching engravings, about who wants patronage to bring him forward – the Sykes’, Fowles’, Prestons, Willeys, Yorkes, lady Johnston, Mrs Wynyard, Miss Maleverns (?), there – Mr Fawkes’ aunt Miss Farrrer staying in the house – D. Goldie, Captain Kearney, Mr Stapleton of Carleton, Mr John Wentworth etc –
Came upstairs at 11 – Dawdling musing – E two dots O one dot, marking discharge from venereal complaint – very fine day –

1826 Wednesday 8 February
5 50/60 11 5/60
Lighted my fire - went into the stable - came in again at 6 1/2 - wrote and sent a longish note to Mrs. William Priestley (Lightcliffe) for the shawls - to say I had hoped we should have seen her before this etc. etc. her coming would do my aunt good - etc. etc. then wrote to Ollivant to go with the size rings, sending the inscription (James Lister obitus 26 January 1826 aetatis 77) and a small quantity of hair - left it to him put hair in the rings at 70/. or not as he thought best, not knowing how they will admit of both hair and inscription - then wrote 1 1/2 pages to IN- [Isabella Norcliffe] to go (by today's mail) with the shawl for Mrs. N- [Norcliffe] to Fisher's (York) -
Breakfast at 10 - Mr. Rayner the undertaker came as desired - paid him £103.1.0 - young Charles H- [Howarth] here doing the lower water closet - Mrs. W.P- [William Priestley] having taken no notice of the shawls in her note in answer to mine, saying she would call this morning sent George back immediately to inquire about them - she had sent them to a friend, and not yet got them back - She came soon after 11 - Saw her for a few minutes then my aunt went and sat with her - added 1/2 page to my letter to IN [Isabella Norcliffe] explaining about the shawl - sent it (directed to IN- [Isabella Norcliffe] at Mrs. Fisher's Petergate York) to the post and sent the size rings, and a small quantity of my uncle's hair, and a note in a parcel to 'Messers Ollivant Jewellers etc. etc. Manchester' -
Mrs. W.P- [William Priestley] came to me then in about 1/2 hour - walked up and down with me - gave a sensible opinion about setting out the walk - went to see the walling and sinking between the Calf Croft and Charles H-'s [Howarth's] peafield - I then walked home with her - said our plans were not quite fixed, but we thought of going abroad for my aunt's health, and hoped to be off in about 6 months - asked her to look out for a woman servant for us - she is very kind and civil and attentive - I saw she was very nervous when she 1st came this morning, but I took no notice
Staid with James S- [Sykes] and about so long that I did not get home till 4 - then with Charles H- [Howarth] doing the water closet and in the garden - Jackman's sons John and William had finished (he himself mending the cart road at Charles H-'s [Howarth's] this afternoon) walling round the water closet cistern in the garden - Dressed - Dinner at 6 10/60 -
My father and Marian were here this morning and I did not see them - my father determined not to go to church on Sunday - Marian quite frightened he said so much last night about a tree he wanted cutting down that had been as I thought settled about before he said if nobody else would cut it down he would do it himself he knows I wish it to stand and he would not have done in this way had my uncle lived - my aunt much hurt and I too when she first told me it is a bad sign thought I and I said so too of what else he may I was much vexed the blood mounted to my head but I have rather got over it now talk of going to speak to him tomorrow before breakfast perhaps I shall take Tib and we shall go without my father - Tea at 8 - afterwards wrote all the above of today - Very fine day - Barometer 2 1/2 degrees at 9 50/60 p.m. and Fahrenheit 44° at the same hour at which hour came up to bed - E..O. -

1826 Tuesday 25 April
6 1/2
11 1/2
Wrote 2 pages to Mr Duffin to ask him to give me a bed on Thursday night and Friday night expected M- [Mariana] to bring me back on Saturday - mentioned our having given up the thought of going to Northgate or Buxton and our wish to be off by the 2nd week in July, - my aunt not having so well the last few days -
Breakfast at 9 35/60 - took George and off in the gig at 9 5/60. Went to Kebroyde to ask Mr Walker Priestley what sort of agreement he had with Freeman for the stones he sold him - Sat an hour with Mrs Priestley drove her to Thorpe - she hunted out her son - his agreement merely verbal - promises to send me some hints what he thinks ought to be most attended to in these matters, for me to receive by next Monday’s post when I expect hearing from Mr Freeman - Mr Priestley said Freeman would not buy them too dear - he would give little enought - did not go into the house at Thorpe - drove direct to Pyenest to call on Mrs Edwards - not at home - thence direct to the Saltmarshes not at home - staid 1/2 hour at Northgate -
Got to the office of Messiurs Wiglesworth and Parker a minute or 2 before one - the reverend Mr Wilkinson there - took two oaths - Swore that my uncle’s will was the true and last one, and swore that the personalty was under £4000 - Gave Mr Wilkinson a check on the bank for £62.5.8 (£60 for the probate 15/8 for his own fee, and the rest (1/2 guinea of it) for ‘additional length’ of the will and the remainder for postage etc. Proving the will of a near relative is rather a nervous business - I felt, but did not shew it, seeming merely as grave as decorum required - but more than this passed within -
Told Mr Parker to tell Mr Holland that if the township would leave the walls standing and everything statu[s] quo, I would be satisfied and give them no further trouble about the road thro’ yew trees wood and Robinson - said I wanted the road - was on the point of agreeing with Freeman for stone - Mr Parker too said, he would not give too much for it - mentioned my borrowing £2000 of him and preferring to agree with him rather than any other on account of this, and because I knew he would leave the land as he ought to do when he had got the stone - asked Mr Parker if he had the form of such an agreement as I should want - yes! gave me lease made for Mr Wilson of Manchester according to the directions of Mr Mitchell of Booth town - the very thing I wanted - I shall consider it -
Mr Parker wished me to see Mrs Lees - She wants several more alterations - went and called on her about 2 - the 2 Miss Walkers of Crownest there, but they came away immediately - Mrs Lees would shake hands with and would have talked I know not how long, but luckily she had her additional wants written down I begged to have the paper - said we should be glad to do anything to make the thing comfortable to all parties - thought there would be no difficulties between us, agreed to meet her at Northgate at one tomorrow and came away thinking the time I had staid long - not caring to know the state of bowels etc etc which made a water closet (which I said at once we could not manage) necessary - She said she would come and call on my aunt had before intended it - but had been so great an invalid - I bowed, and, as soon afterwards as seemed civil, said, I feared my aunt was too unwell to be able to see her - She took the hint - Poor soul! thought I to myself, she knows no better - those whom we visit here, must wait for us to visit them -
Got home at 3 1/2 - Sat talking to my aunt - she is vexed at Mrs Lees wanting so much more than before - would have told her (I said, they all said it was very high let) she had better give it up would rather shut up the house - no! no! said I - we shall manage matters tomorrow - Went out at 4 - James Sykes planting hollys yesterday and today - Mosey railing (single railing) in Lower brea lane - wants 70 stays, 2 for each rail -  the rails long and slender - Came in and upstairs at 5 - wrote all the above of today -
After leaving Mrs Lees, went to the bank, said I drawn a check on them for £62.5.8 hoped they would not dishonour it - would give Mr Freeman’s check tomorrow. Oh! no! if I had not come and if had been for £300 said Mr Christopher Rawson they would have honoured it - very civil - I thanked him - just called for a moment and told Mr Parker I should meet Mrs Lees tomorrow and he had best call on her afterwards and get the [missing word - lease?] prepared - Mr Edwards wishes her to take it from year to year, but, if we lay out so much money, we ought to have some certainty - Mr Parker offered to do anything for us in the way of looking after workmen when we were away - very civil - thanked him - think he would like to have our stewardship - Mrs Lees to have possession on the 1st of September -
Dressed - Dinner at 6 1/2 Jackman having come and interrupted me 1/4 hour looking at a plan he brought for rebuilding a cottage at Northgate - tea and coffee at 8 - afterwards (till 10 35/60) looking over accounts - making memoranda of things to be done here and in York, and a summary of the alterations etc Mrs Lees wants making at Northgate with observations upon them and questions ready for tomorrow - my aunt went up to bed and to have a warm bath at 9 1/2 - Fair in the morning yet threatening rain - light showers in the afternoon and evening - Barometer 1 1/2 degree below changeable Fahrenheit 45 1/2 at 10 40/60 p.m. at which hour went up to bed - E..O. -
