to analyze leorios character development from the hunter exam arc to the yorknew arc you first have to talk about the person he was/he was trying to be at the beginning.

obviously leorio is good from the core as confirmed by melody but at the beginning of and during the hunter exam arc he was at his lowest, putting up a facade and showing little care for himself.

his facade gets broken through quickly by kurapika, its one of a greedy, money loving idiot and how leorio sees himself and as such presents that way. leorio, as ive said before, believes his goal to become a doctor is a selfish one purely to relieve his own guilt. everytime someone compliments him he gets extremely embarrassed as though he believes hes not worthy of the praise.

so to come back to my original point, this first layer is how leorio sees himself, someone whos selfish and idiotic, greedy and weak. this facade is the one most of the fandom chooses to see sadly.

another prominent trait leorio shows in the hunter exam is his hotheadedness, particularly in moments where he feels as though hes being looked down on or when someone plays with the lives of others, most notably the old lady with her choice riddle and hisoka.

the encounter with hisoka brings me to my next point: his disregard for himself. especially during the hunter exam arc leorio shows just how little he cares about his own life as he faces down hisoka and lets hundreds of snakes bite him to warn kurapika and gon.

the snake scene is, in my opinion, crucial to leorios further development. kurapika and gon risk their lives to save and help him and that changes things for leorio. he realizes theres people who care about him, people whod miss him.

i still strongly believe in the leorio orphan theory and if it is true, he didnt have anyone before coming to the hunter exam, having lost pietro.

this care gon and kurapika show him is a turning point for him to become less reckless and he allows himself to show his caring side more. had melody read his heartbeat during the hunter exam, im sure it wouldve still sounded kind but not as calm and soothing.

thats how he was able to become the voice of reason in yorknew. its why leorio is the one most invested in keeping the group together. gon and killua are kids who dont think stuff like that through and ive discussed many times why kurapika isolates himself.

but of course this doesnt fix leorios problems. hes still plagued by guilt and a feeling of helplessness he tries to fight as its clearly seen in the 13th chairman election arc. he feels guilty and useless and does what he can to help gon.

hes selfless and kind and empathic and caring, thoughtful and wise but at the same time plagued by guilt, insecure and has little regard for himself.

his development from the exam to yorknew mirrors kurapikas development nicely and both of them feel guilty for letting the people they loved get taken away even though it was not either fault. they can help each other heal.

its so funny how characters even say and repeat things about other characters yet most people still get it wrong! chrollo says kurapikas biggest weakness is how much he cares about his friends and people go oh he doesnt have feelings he hates his friends. so many fucking characters go oh gon is so clever hes so smart and curious and good and people go haha hes stupid and evil, so many characters say the same about leorio they say how talented and kind and smart he is and people still go leorio is stupid and selfish. killua himself will have a wonderful arc about letting go of his insecurity snd believing in himself and people will still go oh killua is my little white haired murderboy whos a monster and hates himself how can you miss these wonderful characters that are right in front of your noses!!

so many people characterize kurapika as just very cold, formal and polite and while those are traits that are part of the facade kurapika puts on its not really how he truly wants to be (and he isnt that polite anyways.) the truest hes been to himself was during the hunter exam arc where he, while being a smartass, also had fun with the others etc and of course his backstory, he was a fun loving rowdy child similar to gon. just bc he develops this cold calculating serious shell later doesnt mean that that is who he really is! hes having a depressive episode and hes traumatized! ive seen some people think that thats all kurapika is and that he doesnt care about his friends but thats simply not true. he regrets putting them in danger back in yorkshin which is exactly why he cut them off. kurapika put his friends safety over his revenge before and hed do it again and hes doing it with woble right now! kurapika is really doing terribly right now and judging him based on that protective layer he developed isnt really fair. him trying to shut all his emotions off doesnt erase the emotions hes surpressing. hes doing it to protect gon killua leorio and woble and thats a core part of his personality. he wants to love and be loved but he doesnt regard himself as human anymore because of his actions (not even worthy of kurta clothing)

ive been wondering about this panel and specifically why kurapika was just holding the phone while griefing and not even hanging up or anything but im pretty sure its because he knew leorio would eventually call again and because leorios presence comforts him he kept his phone there in his hand waiting for leorio to call as a form of comfort and to feel less alone

and in this panel, where theyre shown at moments kurapika especially appreciated, leorios shown on the phone, calling him! kurapika appreciated it so much but wouldnt allow himself to pick it up bc he doesnt think he deserves any care shown for him

kallutos reaction to gon kurapika and leorio coming to pick up killua makes me sad especially with context of what other things theyve said... for example in the musical kalluto wonders why killua wants to leave and why he wants to have other friends when kalluto is there for him and while we havent seen killua and kalluto really interact one on one and so dont know about the nature of their relationship keep in mind that

1 kalluto is ten years old

2.canonically jealous of alluka even thiugh she was trapped in a basement for multiple years and the only positive things that have happend to her are killua loving and rescuing her

3. killua is the only sensible part of this family kalluto had for their whole life with alluka being locked away and the others being. yknow. like that

kalluto just wants their big brother back and for that reason joined the phantom troupe at like age ten. they only want killua to love them too and maybe they want to be rescued as well... killua please come back you forgot one!!!

in the current arc theres so many parallels to early hxh, with leorio and kurapika being on a boat again, slightly estranged form one another, gon being home with mito (without nen abilities) and killua being with family its all seemingly reset

which just makes the old ladys choice riddle from way back just all the more scary especially since theres exactly two people on that boat that kurapika cares about.

also leorio was bitten by snakes back on zevil island and the nen ability silent majority manifests through snakes (plus the path they took on trick tower was called majority rules..its not really important i think i just noticed it)

theres also the fact that the chimera ant arc had a call back of sorts to early hxh with meruem having netero loose one arm and leg and as such forcing him to use the limbs gon tried to make him use during that dodgeball game so long ago

this arc or the next one seem to be shaping up to be leorios and kurapikas chimera ant arc i know ive said this too often but i can only hope that them starting this seperated, distant mirrors gon and killuas over attachment and means theyll be able to end this arc by staying together, unlike killus and gons seperation.

it perfectly mirrors how gon and killua became so attached to the point of codependance and as such had to seperate for a while to fix their relationship . leorio and kurapika drifted apart because of kurapikas guilt and his attempt to be completely independant and they will have to reconnect to fix their relationship

leopika just makes me go crazy. they complete eachother. one destroys one heals. the similar trauma the guilt, the huge guilt both of them bear. how leorio never gave up on him. how kurapika held the phone for comfort and how leorio still makes him feel at ease. how kurapika is the only person who knows about leorios trauma. how kurapika is killing himself and leorio doesnt even know how leorio is a doctor the one thing kurapika was looking for when he left the village so many years ago how kurapika has stopped living for revenge how h strives to become stronger to protect his friends his loved ones how hes willing to do anyhting to keep them safe how he doesnt want to involve them at all costs and thats why he left but he has to know how strong they are he has to stop believing that he is the only one whos capable he has to let himself be loved. how leorio got him back through the zodiacs after the months of not picking up the phone how persisant he was. the beginning and the end. aries and pisces rat and boar. its always like that theyre two sides of a coin its hyori ittai.

from an objective standpoint kurapika really is not a moral person: he doesnt even care enough about senritsu to not enlist her help, did not prioritze neons safety and has murdered someone. he is only seventeen (now twenty) and traumatized with no healthy way to cope and he is also aware of the fact that he is not that good of a person, but kurapika admires goodness and morality as a trait we see it when his relationship with leorio immeditely improves after he shares his true goals, we see it in his care for kids like killua gon and woble who are thirteen at most and not capable of being evil and him seeing himself as a terrible person is one of the reasons for his self loathing. he fails to see any positive traits he posesses and he fails to see that he can be a better person if he wants to be

Leorio Paladinight is easily one of the most underrated hxh characters, both within the fandom, merch and the manga itself, because he really is the most normal out of the main four and i really think he should be appreciated more because hes a great character!

Once again, shoutout to Mags @senritsus for helping with this! Go follow him!!

Im gonna be talking about Leorios Character, where his arc will go, and his connection with Kurapika. This is gonna be a little harder than writing Kurapika meta, since theres (sadly) a lot less Leorio content and we know a lot less about his background but ill try my best! Leorio deserves it.

Reading my Kurapika meta might make this a little more enjoyable, since i touched on Leorios and Kurapikas relationship more in depth there but you can read this post without reading it!

1 . Leorios Personality And His Past

When we first meet Leorio, hes introduced as a stupid, greedy and quick to anger Pervert, not an uncommon trope for a comedic relief character in anime. Those comedic relief characters often lack personality beyond that, a fact that is actually commented on by Kurapika.

But thanks to Kurapika, about seven chapters in, we learn more about Leorio and his motivations and as the manga goes on, it becomes obvious that there is way more to Leorio than just someone whos there for comedic relief.

Leorio grew up in (presumably extreme) poverty, loosing a friend due to their lack of money, motivating him to want to become a doctor whos able to help people for free.

"I'm a simple guy. Figured I'd become a doctor... so I could cure some kid with the same disease, tell his parents they owed me nothing! Me... A doctor! Now there's a joke!! Do you know how much it costs to even try to become a doctor? The mind boggles!! It's always about money! Always!! That's why I want it!"

Knowing this, Leorios character already gains a lot of depth. Sadly, the manga doesnt mention when exactly his friend died but the 2011 Anime follows the manga more closely so ill go with the fact that his friend died when they were younger. Most of Leorios actions can be explained with the guilt he feels over the death of his friend, how useless he often feels and the way his upbringing in poverty affected him, for example at the very beginning, the fight he picks with Kurapika stems from the fact that Kurapika didnt respect him and was acting as if he was better than him.

Leorio absolutely hates feeling like hes at a disadvantage, or like someone is looking down on him, probably due to getting little respect during his childhood due to his poverty. This also just might be the reason for him to constantly dress in a suit, something that rich, important people often wear. He often overplays his pride, puts up a facade and the way he presents himself really just screams overcompensation in so many ways

Here, he gets upset at Killua because he feels disadvantaged once again. This feeling of inferiority is often the reason for the fights Leorio has with Kurapika and in this instance Killua, he absolutely hates being looked down on. The Other reason he fights with someone early on is, because they dont value life in his eyes, for example the old woman who was asking them to choose between two human lives, toying with them per say, and not valuing them.

Leorio values human life, especially those of his friends over everything else and has a strong sense of Morality, since he did acknowledge he was in the wrong and apologized to the old lady.

When Hisoka was playing with the lives of the others during the hunter exam, as well as Leorios and his friends, Leorio got upset once again and, knowing just how powerful Hisoka was attacked him anyways with no regard for his safety.

He mentions “being toyed with” twice, something people do with people they look down on/are stronger than, where Leorios hate of feeling inferior once again comes back to show.

But, While Leorio absolutely hates being regarded worse than everyone, he also dislikes being viewed as someone whos better than everyone and gets very embarassed everytime someone compliments him/shows him positive attention. This is either due to the fact that he isnt used to it, or that he doesnt think he deserves it (note how hes always drawn with an embarassed blush).

Leorio is a very selfless man, whos ready to do everything in his power to help his friends because he doesnt want to ever lose another friend again. During the election arc, he focuses his entire speech around wanting to help Gon and uses his power to call for everyone to try and help Gon,

when Illumi manipulates Killua into killing during the hunter exam arc, Leorio is ready to give up his hunter licence for Killua,

And, being well aware of what Illumi was capable of, refused to let him through the door to protect Gon.

reassured Killua, showing his intense care for his friends (and little kids since Killua had actually not even been that nice to him),

When Killua had to fight against the serial killer, before they knew about his real strength, Leorio assured him that he wouldnt have to fight,

he willingly risked his life and let hundreds of snakes bite him just to warn Kurapika and Gon and to assure their chances of success, and before that tried to disband their team so they could still advance if he failed,

and, without any fear, they couldve sense that, stared down and yelled at the phantom troupe.

Leorio hates feeling useless and despite that, often does. He felt useless when his friend died and thus decided to become a doctor to cope with this guilt, he felt useless when Gon was sick, like his friend, and he couldnt do anything once again and he feels useless when Kurapika wont let him help him and wont let him reach out but despite that he keeps trying, to fight his guilt, to make sure that Kurapika is safe and to do his best to help.

He describes studying to become a doctor as something he does for himself, he doesnt see that notion, becoming a doctor to help people for free, as something selfless that should be admired.

He doesnt see becoming a doctor as something that he should brag with or that people should know. When he first meets Gon and Kurapika he puts up the front of wanting money to buy cars, mansions, wine, etc, all things one usually would want with money, when he really wanted the money to study so he could help people. Leorio thinks hes useless and good for nothing while everyone else fights and he just “selfishly” studies, but hes not useless at all and obviously studying to become a doctor to help the poor isnt something thats selfish at all. Maybe his motivations, to deal with his guilt over losing a friend, are a little selfish but the fact that he even blames himself and that he copes by trying to protect and value life wherever he can show that Leorio himself isnt a selfish person, hes someone whos ready to put his life on the line for his friends and others any day, despite being less reckless than the other three.

He sees Kurapikas quest for revenge as something noble, while he thinks very little of himself. Even during the election arc, after he had come into second and third place multiple times he was still convinced, somehow, that no one was gonna vote for him.

Even Ging a very experienced and talented hunter, though he is a terrible person, thinks highly of Leorio,

even copying the punch he threw at him, which Leorio, as Ging theorizes, mightve developed to get rid of tumors that are unreachable with operation, showing just how smart Leorio really is.

Leorio is someone whos been alone a lot and, while hes the least reckless and best at selfcare out of all four protagonists, had little regard for himself in especially the first arc, where he just kept jumping into dangerous situation. An explanation for that could be, that he had no one to care about and no one that cared about him before he went to take the hunter exam since weve never actually heard about any family he had or has. He could possibly be an orphan, explaining the missing mention of any family and the extreme attachment he has to Gon, Killua and Kurapika.

Him being orphaned would also perfectly fit into hunter x hunters theme of finding new family after losing another, Kurapika losing his entire clan, Gon losing his father, Killua losing his entire family except Alluka since his family is terrible and as good as dead to him and Leorio just never having really had one. So, the reason he becomes a little more responsible in arcs after the hunter exam is probably, that he finally had people to care about again, that also cared about him so now he doesnt feel like no one would miss him if he died anymore.

In short, Leorio, while being extremely selfless, caring, fearless, moral and empathic, thinks very little of himself and often feels useless and selfish. He cares most about the well being of his friends and has deep rooted feelings of guilt about the death of his friend, even though it was out of his control and he doesnt believe that his goal to be a doctor or really just he himself is deserving of any praise.

His wish to be a doctor is a mix of that extreme internalized guilt from “letting” his friend die, his selflessness that just got pushed up by the guilt and the empathy he gained by growing up in poverty and the first hand experience on why exactly free healthcare is needed.

2. Leorios Relationship With Kurapika, His Guilt, And How His Arc Could End

I wont go in depth about them here, since i already have one that multiple times but they truly are so, so important to eachother and are in many ways two sides of the same coin. Both of them have lost people close to them and theyve dealt with it in such different ways. It made Leorio want to protect life and heal people, focusing his nen around helping others (see: the punch he used being something he actually developed to deal with tumors) and it made Kurapika want to destroy life and kill people, taking revenge and destroying himself in the process, mirrored within his nen ability too (as it literally kills him to use emperor time, one hour of his life for every second). So this set-up, combined with the guilt Leorio feels over not being able to help his friend or Gon, combined with how important they are to eachother, combined with how the current arc has the both together on that boat, I feel like it would really make sense for Leorio to finally be able to save someone, furthering his character arc in a very satisfying way and also helping Kurapikas arc, letting him accept help from others and becoming less self destructive.

“Leorio is an unabashedly selfless character who very deliberately centered his life around helping others and the thought that he cant do that with Kurapika is definitely something he tries to take blame for.” (directly quoted from mags @senritsus <3) If something were to happen to Kurapika while Leorio is near and on top of that on doctor duty, where helping people is his only job, i couldnt imagine the guilt Leorio would feel. Hes always been looking out for Kurapika since they became close friends (and maybe the nearest thing to a best friend either had had in years) during the hunter exam and Kurapika did always try to be someone who calmed Leorio and helped him be more rational, though that changed when he began his down spiral after killing his first person and they drifted further apart and Leorio took on the job of calming down Kurapika.

Kurapika is in desperate need of saving and having Leorio be that person to save him would be so perfect for both of their arcs.

This arc already set up the tension in their relationship at the very beginning, or atleast before the succession war began and i do believe it has to be resolved (relatively) soon, especially because of this (once again my favorite) panel, showing Leorio as one of the four people Kurapika cares most about.

And, to quote my Kurapika meta post about this panel, Hes thinking about moments where they made him happy/made him care about them, Gon and Killua with their food fight in the park where they cheered him up and Leorio on the phone. Its him calling to check up on Kurapika. Kurapika really did appreciate it so much, even if he doesnt show it, even if he keeps pushing Leorio away. And he does care about them, even if he doesnt want to! The way Leorio expresses care for his friends, which is very vocal and direct, is so good for Kurapika because even if he still cant really believe or accept it, its still something he appreciates, somehow. I am not (!) saying that they will definitely end up with eachother but they are definitely incredibly important to the others character development and i dont think Togashi will forget about that.

on kurapikas view of himself and his relations with leorio and prince woble (again)

this is a continuation of/add on to this post i made! you dont have to read it to understand this but i would really appreciate it if you did! also, shoutout to mags @senritsus again for helping me with this, again! <3

im gonna be talking about kurapikas very negative of himself, the importance of leorio to his arc (again, i know) and ill go more in depth about the importance of prince woble, since i forgot some important parts in my original post!

1. Kurapikas Selfloathing

Kurapika seems to truly believe, that the people around him dont, or shouldnt care about him. Right now he sees his quest for revenge as his only reason to live, though that might be slowly changing (hopefully).

Here, he refers to his journy finally beginning, the journey he wanted to take way back when he first left, but his clan was murdered only six weeks after he left and after that his only reason for traveling was his quest for revenge.

It was the purpose he had give himself and now hes scared of where he should go, when that purpose is fulfilled.

He genuinely doesnt seem to be able to fathom, that anyone could truly care about him

Heres Mizai, directly telling him, that Leorio cares about him, “values him highly” to which Kurapika responds “I wonder about that. To be honest i really dont think my ability will be of much help within the dark continent.”

Kurapika measures his worth to others, especially Leorio here, through his ability to fight.

He wonders if Leorio values him. He doesnt know, hes unsure, after Leorio has tried to call him for over a year, Kurapika thinks that the only thing Leorio could possibly value about him, is his ability to fight.

He thinks thats the reason, that Leorio suggested him for a position in the Zodiacs.

Kurapika thinks his only reason to live his is revenge and as such sees no worth for himself as a person.

He really doesnt see himself as human anymore and just someone, who lives for a revenge, a beast in humans clothing.

The reasons he keeps pushing Leorio away and denying, that Leorio cares about him in any ways is that hes scared to get close to people since he doesnt want to suffer through the pain of losing someone again, hes scared to let people close because he seems himself as bad influence, and he believes he doesnt deserve any care Leorio shows him. Hes still not convinced that Leorio truly cares about him as a Person (see: “I wonder about that”), which brings me to:

2. Kurapikas Relationship With Leorio

Ive said it before and ill say it again. Leorio and Kurapika are absolutely crucial to the others development. I have made a post about this but it wasnt very thought out and really mostly just me, being very very mad at three am, so ill talk about it properly now.

2.1 Thematic Connection Through The Narrative

Back when Kurapika first left his village, he left to explore, to have fun (as instructed by Pairo), and to find a doctor. Leorio wants to be a doctor. Togashi easily couldve made Kurapika leave for just those reasons or for any other reasons. Leorio couldve wanted to be anything else but both of them want to find/want to be a doctor and i do believe that has a lot of significance.

I think this is the exact moment, Kurapika came to truly appreciate Leorio, after seeing how he is actually dedicated to helping others and after finding out that he wants to be a doctor. And, maybe not so coincidentally, Kurapika also seems to be at his best during the first arc, even laughing. The only other time he laughs is way after the hunter exam arc, when Gon and Killua have their food fight, but thats it.

Though, this has a lot to do with Kurapika being around Children, who seem to calm him down (possibly because they remind him of pairo) Ive actually kind of talked about that too! The thematic connection continues with the fact, that both had a friend die.

This adds on to the moment, where they actually truly became friends. Kurapika realizes that Leorio has experienced loss too and they connect through that fact on a personal and thematic level. Also, during this arc, when Killua and Gon are constantly paired up, so are Kurapika and Leorio but thats probably just so the four protagonists could all stay in their little group.

And of course, The Zodiac Connection. Their appearances are obviously similar:

And Pariston seems to have some features from Leorio too, same with Ging and Kurapika They seem to be foils of eachother in a way, more obviously with Ging and Leorio with the whole caring about Gon thing. Ging and Paristons Relationship mirrors the Relationship Leorio and Kurapika had at the very beginning, before the Hunter exam started, though theirs was more lighthearted because they were still teens while Ging and Pariston are fully grown adults. Pariston and Kurapika also both seem to have two sides to their personality, that they dont always show, Kurapikas being his happier side that was mostly showing during the hunter exam when he had a strong support system and Paristons being his sinister one thats very unlike the cheery public persona he puts on, mirroring Kurapika once again. Right now, in the manga, Ging and Pariston are working together, while Kurapika and Leorio are apart and Paristons and Gings teaming up also happend, while Kurapika went to join the Zodiacs, reuniting with Leorio. Since Ging and Pariston are so important to the others arc right now, I think Leorio will definitely come into play sometime this arc.

Also, a sidenote: This arc seems to be shaping up to be the chimera ant arc equivalent for Kurapika and hopefully Leorio too, since it comes almost directly after it, does not involve Killua and Gon at all (just like the chimera ant arc had no Leorio and Kurapika), involves the dark continent in a way (just like the chimera ant arc, since that is where they came from) and has Killua and Gon seperated, like Leorio and Kurapika where during the chimera ant arc.

Killua and Gon begun the chimera ant arc together and ended it with their Seperation. Leorio and Kurapika begun this arc seperately (with a short reunion) and maybe they will end it with being together, but this is mostly just me hoping.

(And this time its Mizai dealing with all of their teen angst.)

2.2 Personal Connection, Their Relationship

I really have seen barely any meta on their relationship which i think is a crime because its really so good and interesting, so, here i go!

Kurapikas and Leorios Friendship starts out very rocky, obviously. They butt heads when they first meet and have a lot of petty arguments well after that but as their bond strenghtens those lessen.

At the beginning of the hunter exam arc, they were pretty much at eachothers throats, then they learn about eachothers real motivations, spend more time together and begin to value eachother more.

here are some moments where leorio helps kurapika loosen up

and here are some where its obvious that kurapika does think highly of leorio and sees him as his equal.

Selflessness seems to be a trait Kurapika admires. When it first became obvious that Leorio actually wanted the money to help people, their relationship immediately improved.

As shown above, by the time they reach the island stage, Kurapika trusts Leorio enough to want to team up with him.

And the appreciation is definitely mutual. Leorio sees Kurapika as his friends and he values all of his friends highly. Also, Kurapika appears to help him be more rational > stopping him from attacking that old woman > trying to calm him during arguments

(Not when Illumi was threatening Gon and Killua though but thats very understandable.)

Then, during the yorknew arc, Leorio starts their tradition of calling and not picking up and later insists on helping him, and tries to calm him, multiple times, eventually succeeding (kind of).

Later, when Kurapika comes down with his fever, Leorio is right there, taking care of him. It shows how much he worries for and cares about Kurapika and how he really doesnt want to lose another friend.

Heres him telling Melody to take care of Kurapika, knowing that she will be at his side as a colleague.

Then, way way later when they finally reunite, after Leorios been trying to call for so long and Kurapikas been climbing the mafia ranks and pushing everyone away, they still care so much about eachother.

Kurapika feels better with Leorio around and hes thankful for him but still believes that he doesnt deserve any care. And its obvious to everyone, except Kurapika apparently, that Leorio cares, so much.

Leorio also feels better with Kurapika around, someone he knows and trusts. And they do know eachother well. Kurapika notes, that he isnt even “the shy or socially anxious type” , which either implies that this is a very stressful situation for Leorio, or, that Leorio is just using being “uncomfortable” as an excuse to see Kurapika. Though it really is more likely that its the first one, im just throwing this out here.

Then of course, theres this, which ill never shut up about:

Its Kurapikas Mentor, telling him, that hes gonna need allies he genuinely cares about to progress forward, to which Kurapika thinks that he was right since progressing forward like this wasnt that simple, but his solution to that seems to be wanting to get even stronger, he doesnt want to endanger anyone, he doesnt want to care about people, but its not that simple in reality, cue: pictures of Gon, Killua, Leorio and Prince Woble, the four people he canonically cares most about. Since this is the section about Leorio, ill go more in depth about his panel here and later, ill talk about Prince Woble.

Hes thinking about moments where they made him happy/made him care about them, Gon and Killua with their food fight in the park where they cheered him up and Leorio on the phone. Its him calling to check up on Kurapika. Kurapika really did appreciate it so much, even if he doesnt show it, even if he keeps pushing Leorio away. And he does care about them, even if he doesnt want to! The way Leorio expresses care for his friends, which is very vocal and direct, is so good for Kurapika because even if he still cant really believe or accept it, its still something he appreciates, somehow. I am not (!) saying that they will definitely end up with eachother but they are definitely incredibly important to the others character development and i dont think Togashi will forget about that. Now, for my last point.

3. Kurapikas Relations With Prince Woble

Prince Woble is so, so important to Kurapika, this isnt news and Kurapika holds an incredible amount of empathy for little kids, seen in his interactions with Gon and Killua too and now with Prince Woble.

He really is very dedicated to protecting Prince Woble in this arc, prepared to full on die for her. To directly quote my other meta post about this,

“Kurapikas arc appears to very much be about him finding the human connection, that he lost when his clan was killed, again, effectively making this found family story a Big Deal thematically. Him finding a new purpose in life through taking care of Woble would be, in my opinion, a thematically satisfying ending for Kurapikas arc, since its been said by many in-story characters that his search for revenge will only destroy him in the end”

Though, the important part, that i neglected in my first post since i cant read, is, that when Kurapika thinks about the people he cares about, he also thinks about her.

I really, really hope that this is some kind of foreshadowing of him actually taking care of Prince Woble in the future. It would be the perfect way for Kurapika to find new purpose in life and for him to become human again, in his eyes. Also, i am a little worried about the dark aura that Kurapika senses from her sometimes, but i really dont know what to make of that as of now.

some see the butterfly as a symbol of resurrection. around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope, and life.

in greek mythology dolphins carry the spirits of the dead to the next reality, giving dolphins the meaning of rebirth and renewal.

fish (which are by the way the animal used to represent leorio though this ones not a betta) hold symbolic meaning of change and transformation

so i think its safe to say that kurapika will be going through some changes this arc (and maybe that leorio will be involved in a way?)

(and not only is the fish leorios animal, its also yellow, leorios color and it has red eyes like kurapika. make of that what you will)

only togashi knows for sure but do you think kurapika’s gonna die in this arc? personally, I just don’t see him dying yet :/ also, how do you think kurapika and leorio interactions are gonna play out in the future?

AH! i really dont think so!

itd be a cop-out for resolving his trauma like sure it could happen but its be pretty lazy writing and togashi is known to be a perfectionist! also imagine what would happen if kurapika, his best friend, died on the boat he had doctor duty on. another friend he couldnt save. that would not lead to anything good!!!!

leorio and kurapika are very...emotionally constipated around eachother, we do see leorio try to act normal but i dont think hes letting his true feelings show like hes obviously very upset about kurapika not answering his calls and not visiting gon and not giving him his email while kurapika is...kurapika... we see how glad he is to have leorio near him again, he tells mizai but to leorios face? kurapika tries to use his cold facade to push him away, to make leorio hate him so him dying will hurt leorio less but thats obviously not working

the next time i see them interacting is either, when a doctor for kurapika or woble is needed and leorio is the only person kurapika trusts enough to call (kurapika would need one because of his stupid nen thing plus bill already BAITED us. and woble would need one bc of that assassin camilla has that might make her sick) OR when they reach the dark continent and might have to part ways..ive briefly talked about this but i think kurapika might not be able to go on the dark continent because he might just loose his nen OR to protect woble because if oito dies hes not gonna take a BABY on the dark continent (possible leorio centric arc...i feel like it mightve been hinted at with kurapika saying how his abilities arent suited for the dark continent and how excited leorio was to go when cheadle called him)

so the interactions we could see are going to be the same level of kind of awkward emotional tension we saw them having last arc... if leorio goes to the real dark continent on his own there might just be some kind of emotional scene where kurapika gets mad at leorio like kinda like this scene way back (remember: leorio does end up going alone):

this arc has a lot of similarities to the hunter exam arc already like everyone kind of is whwre they started: gon is on whale island, killua is with family (but good this time) and leorio and kurapika are on a boat sailing on an ocean of emotional turmoil...

there was a post about the choice quiz from the old lady way back and how kurapika and leorio might have to make a choice and i think kurapika might have to make a choice between woble and leorio (and chooses woble because leorio has a better chance of protecting himself than a BABY)

so um long story short i think their interactions are gonna be as overly polite awkward was theyve been until kurapika (or maybe leorio even) snaps and all the repressed emotion comes pouring out

on kurapikas further development, the plots general direction and why leorio is on the black whale

this is just kind of a speculation on where kurapikas arc and the general plot is heading right now!

i wrote this with the help of mags @geysers/@butchmeruem !!<3

First off, i think that, while there is still a possibilty, it seems unlikely that Kurapika will die, as killing him off would be a very easy way to just finish his arc.

It wouldn’t resolve his trauma and it just seems predictable in a way and i want to believe that Togashi is a better writer than that.

Killing off Kurapika simply for shock value would in no way be a satisfying end for him or anyone around him.

I do believe there are about three directions his arc could go in.

(Manga Spoilers, obviously!)

1.1. Kurapika Gives Up His Revenge And Takes In Prince Woble

I believe this is a very likely possibilty, since it’s been shown that Kurapika is naturally calmer and happier around children - during the hunter licence arc hes at his best while hes together with Gon and Killua, and Leorio too and he very obviously feels naturally inclined to nurture kids, much like Leorio as they both are very worried about Gon and Killua during those arcs and now, during the current arc, Kurapika seems to enjoy being around Prince Woble.

If Kurapika were to take in Prince Woble either Leorio or Melody or even both would probably end up helping him take care of her.

Kurapikas arc appears to very much be about him finding the human connection, that he lost when his clan was killed, again, effectively making this found family story a Big Deal thematically.

Him finding a new purpose in life through taking care of Woble would be, in my opinion, a thematically satisfying ending for Kurapikas arc, since its been said by many in-story characters that his search for revenge will only destroy him in the end

Though, for this scenario, Prince Wobles Mother would probably have to die. I’ll discuss how i think it might happen in a bit!

1.2. Kurapika Won’t Rest Until The Phantom Troupe Is Dead And Then Takes In Prince Woble

In my opinion this is less likely, since its been talked about so much how the Revenge will destroy Kurapika.

But it might be a hint towards him finishing his revenge, only to loose his purpose in life, only to find it again bc taking in the baby.

Its basically a slightly darker version of my first theory.

1.3. Prince Woble Is Killed And Kurapika Looses It, Possibly Dying Too

I really dislike this one because it’s perfect, terrible angst fuel. Theres a lot of things going on on that Boat that could kill a baby

The Sucsession War, obviously

The Phantom Troupe

The Mafia

Hisoka

Probably more that I’m forgetting right now

So, if one of those factors ends up killing Woble i think it might be cause for Kurapika to finally, completely break, even more so if combined with the fact that he will most likey have to find Pairos preserved head with the remaining eyes of his clan.

Like i stated earlier, i do believe that this isn’t very likely but it still is very much a possibility, sadly.

2. Possibilities For The Plots General Direction

2.1. Queen Oito Dies

Queen Oitos death is very, very probable at this point.

She might sacrifice herself for Woble and possibly Kurapika to live, which supports Theory 1.1. & 1.2.! Possibly 1.3 too, with her death just being in vain.

But, remember how Kurapika and Queen are still connected through Emperor Time.

When Kurapika passed out because of overusage of his Nen, Queen Oito passed out right with him.

If Queen Oito dies and her and Kurpaika are still connected, I think Kurapika might experience the Sensation of Dying, without actually dying, which would be a huge traumatic experience for anyone.

> possible Leorio Reappearance though, since Kurapika would most definitely need a Doctor after that.

2.2. Pairos Head

I think most HxH fans have accepted/ackknowledged that the head that the Prince has in a Jar is most likey Pairos and that Kurapika will find it and experience extreme Emotional Turmoil, because of course.

Its his dead best friends head in a jar. What do you expect.

This is just wishful thinking but again, possibility that Kurapika will black out and need a doctor. > Leorio Reappearance

3. Why Leorio Is On The Black Whale

First, theres THIS post i made about how Leorios and Kurapikas arcs are connected. Reading it might add onto this specific point!

Now, simply put, from a narrative Perspective, Leorio is on the Black Whale for Kurapika.

I love Leorio but if Togashi wanted this arc to be about him, he would’ve given him more focus early on.

But no, the last time we saw Leorio it was Kurapika thinking about him.

“Though...Reality...Isn’t all that...Simple...!!!” Is literally Kurapika thinking, how always being on his own and alone is not as easy as he thought it would be, while thinking of Leorio, Gon and Killua.

More to this in a bit.

The in-story reason for Leorios presence on the Black Whale is that all the zodiacs are going, though Leorio stated that he wishes he could continue his studies.

This easily could’ve been used as an excuse to make him stay behind but Cheadle really just so happend to be someone who could train him so he could come along anyways.

There is little actual reason for Leorio to come along, except to maybe fight but someone else could easily fill that role.

The Key Difference is that Leorio is part of Kurapikas found family and also very quick to call people out on their bullshit which is exactly what Kurapika needs this arc.

I believe that’s why Togashi put him on the boat.

Now, again about the “Though...Reality...Isn’t all that...Simple...!!!” bit.

This is might really just be wishful interpretation and overthinking but Leorio has his own Panel and is facing closest to the viewpoint in the third one.

Also, the panel that shows him alone has him on the Phone.

I think that this implies, that Kurapika truly appreciates Leorios concern for him but keeps pushing him away for, what i assume is a fear of letting anyone get close to him, which brings us to:

3.1. Pairos Words

Since Pairos head might show up very soon, there will probably be a callback to his words, or atleast when Kurapikas arc ends, hopefully with him being happy, there will be.

I believe, or want to believe that those words will ultimately let Kurapika allow himself to be happy and let people in to actually help him, Re: Leorio and how he might help Kurapika!
