Our review is called “Canon 5D Mark III Review – Is It Still Great?” for a reason. Yes, 100% we would say the Canon 5D Mark IV is a better camera – but it is also much more expensive ($600+ greater as of what we’re seeing right now), and most people aren’t going to be able to tell the difference in image quality anyways. In 2019, our view of the Mark III’s cons are a bit skewed as we are looking back after having used better equipment. This is especially noticeable in lower light situations – which does make sense, but it’s been improved upon since the release of the Mark IV. Some of this is the result of the lenses we are using – but we do struggle to catch a solid focus at times (regardless of the lens we are using). The one area we’ve noticed more of a hiccup ourselves has been in the focusing ability of this camera. A few of them are fairly trivial such as the lack of full-frame autofocus sensors (most just sit in a small region at the center of the frame instead of around the top, bottom, sides and corners), no Wi-Fi for uploading photos directly to the internet, no GPS location tagging, and no built in flash. Like every camera out there, the Canon 5D Mark III does have some drawbacks. The amazing people at the Internet Archive maintain a digital lending library: they buy and scan one copy of every book (pretty much every book, ever) and lend it out to one person at a time.

They've just announced that during the crisis, they are lifting the one-borrower-at-a-time restriction and allowing unlimited borrowing, "to meet the needs of a global community of displaced learners". They call it the "National Emergency Library."

Nurses at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland are treating patients from the Grand Princess cruise ship, at least 21 of whom have tested positive for covid-19. The nurses are working without adequate PPE, thanks to a national shortage (and asshole hoarders).

I attended my first O'Reilly conference in, I think, 1997? And I sponsored my first O'Reilly con, the first P2P con, in 2001 (?). I spent years on the committee for the Emerging Tech conference, and I've keynoted more O'Reilly cons than I can recall.

These events have been some of the most important gatherings I've ever attended: places where I made lifelong friends and collaborators (I first met my wife at an Etech con), and learned so much.

This is (obviously) not a good time to be in the event business. For perfectly good – and nevertheless so, so sad – reasons, O'Reilly has just exited the in-person conference business.

The covid collapse feels a lot like the post-911/dotcom crash moment. That was when we lost the Etech conference, whose focus had always been "what are the most speculative things the weirdest nerds are doing?" No one had a budget for that kind of thing after the crash.

The dotcom crash and the loss of Etech were hugely traumatic, but there WERE silver linings. Etech's crash begat FOO Camp, consistently the best events I've ever attended – small gatherings of smart weirdos who programmed their own conference in realtime.

It also created a brief moment of breathing space in tech, which had its origins in driven tech enthusiasts but had been steadily colonized by buck-chasers who upped sticks and quit when the money disappeared from the sector. For a brief moment, mid-decade, people who wanted to build meaningful technologies for users – not investors – could hire engineering talent and find office space. That was ended by the finance bubble that shattered in 2008, but for a while there, it was good.

It's brutal to think that I'll never go to another O'Reilly con, but my hopeful inner voice tells me that there might be something as wonderful on the horizon as FOO Camp. I'm so sorry for all the O'Reilly conference staff, who are amazing and have done so much good work.

As O'Reilly CEO Laura Baldwin writes, "No offense to 'Netflix and chill' but how about we move toward 'Code and conquer' as our new mantra during these trying times?"

Xi's enemies sense weakness (permalink)

Autocracies are intrinsically unstable because their have-nots (who tend to be numerous) believe that they have no path to becoming haves, and see no legitimate purpose to preserve the social order.

China has stabilized its autocracy by simultaneously lifting hundreds of millions out of poverty and by using internet surveillance to both neutralize dissidents and spot its most corrupt and dangerous politicians.

But under Xi, internet surveillance has primarily become a weapon for spotting and neutralizing dissidents, and less so a way of spotting self-dealing technocrats and shutting them down. This created "authoritarian blindness," which meant Xi didn't spot or respond to Wuhan in good time.

You know what's more terrifying and frustrating than being locked down at home during a coronavirus pandemic? Being imprisoned during a coronavirus pandemic, crammed in with others, deprived of soap and supplies.

It's very bad in regular jails and prisons, but if anything, it's even worse in ICE's gulags, where thousands of law-abiding long-term US residents – and asylum seekers – have been detained by the Trump administration in order to please his sadistic base.

For example, Ian has lived in the US for 20 years. His wife and children are US citizens. He was detained while awaiting a decision on his spousal visa. His wife is a nurse treating covid patients. His children miss their father.

Ian has a heart condition that puts him at severe risk if he contracts coronavirus. He's in a 40-person dormitory with a recent arrival from China who is exhibiting symptoms.

He's in NJ's Essex detention facility, which is serviced by Corecivic, formerly Corrections Corporation of America, a notorious human rights abuser with a long history of beltway banditry while running private prisons. Some detainees there are on hunger strike.

One of the medical staffers there was confirmed by ICE to have contracted coronavirus. The next day, ICE denied that he was medical staff. ICE would not comment on the contradiction.

After Trump made misleading statements about the safety and efficacy of treating covid-19 with chloroquine, members of his cult began dropping dead of overdoses on the antimalarial drug.

But it wasn't just low-information Trumpers who took the advice to heart. Pharmacists are seeing surges in massive orders of chloroquine from doctors and even dentists who are self-prescribing in order to hoard, and then lying about it when the pharmacists ask for explanations.

The World Science Fiction Convention began in 1939, when 200 sf fans who'd come to New York for the World's Fair gathered together (while explicitly excluding the leftist "Futurian" writers, who held their own counter-convention).

This year's Worldcon is Conzealand, the first Worldcon in New Zealand. Except it won't be. The organizers have wisely decided to move to a virtual event.

The hotels are allowing for cancellations, though there's some work to be done to allow the organizers to do mass cancellations for their group block. Different airlines have different rules regarding cancellations.

I've long admired (and worn) clothing from Volante Design, whose "streetwear for superheroes" is made by well-paid, onshore workers and is cosplay-adjascent — the kind of thing you can wear out and about, but also to a con.

Now, they're making masks for covid responders.

The masks are made from cloth and can protect N95 masks from contamination as they are reused (they have a pocket for this purpose). They can also prevent you from touching your face, and partially contain coughs when medical masks are not available

Críticas: Voy a empezar diciendo que ha sido la mayor decepción que he visto en los Live Action de Disney. Tiene cosas de la película original. Hay cosas nuevas que están bien pero tiene muchas cosas malas.Le falta ritmo, no ponen las canciones, quitan personajes míticos como por ejemplo a Mushu, Li Shang y al más importante a Shan Yu. La banda sonora está bien pero le falta más potencia en los momentos importantes. La fotografia es excelente. La actuación de Liu Yifei está genial lo mejor de la película. El malo es muy flojo ni comparación con la cinta del 98. Otra cosa que no me gusta es el exceso del tema de Reflejo que se repite demasiadas veces. Apenas tiene humor cosa que era esencial en la de dibujos. El ave Fénix sale dos veces y para eso quitan a Mushu. Seguimos con más fallos la familia no se llama Fá ahora se llama Hua. A veces se hace lenta y cortan cosas de la original (Os contaré en Spoilers). Si esta película sido 90% fiel al film del 98 y el 10% restante con estas pequeñas cosas nuevas le hubiera puesto un 9 o 10. La mala ni si quiera nos dice de donde viene (O al menos eso recuerdo). Las tomas de acción están bien rodadas. Apruebo la película porque tiene buenos efectos, fotografía y es entretenida.

En resumen, Mulán es un producto aceptable, por los pelos. Es muy inferior a la película animada, debido a unas cuantas decisiones narrativas bastante cuestionables y a su escasísimo impacto emocional, lo cual es la tónica habitual en los remakes de la casa del ratón. Si te gustan los otros intentos del estudio de traer sus pelis de los 90 a la acción real, pues igual te gusta este, ya que al menos a mí no me parece el peor de todos ellos (a menos, claro está, que lo que te eche para atrás sea el alegato feminista, que claro que está ahí, pero es que vamos a ver, ya estaba muy presente en la original, ¿de verdad alguien pensaba que en 2020 ese mensaje no iba a aparecer multiplicado por cinco?). Eso sí, no creo que merezca la pena pagar 22 euros por ella, y menos aún para verla en tu casa.

SPN Season 15 Spoiler Sheet, update 11/4

There were a few nice tidbits from DCCon about the latest filmed episodes (9-10). These have been a busy few weeks for me, so if I have missed anything or messed it up, let me know! I had a detail from ep 10 listed as 9, which is fixed now. Remember- this is for fun and somethings will be wrong! Enjoy the episode this week after a week off.

General Info (oldest to newest)

There is likely to be 20 episodes

They are filming the 4th episode 1st, which Jensen is directing

Returning this year are: Rowena, Ketch, Eileen, Amara, Adam, and Kevin

Jared and Jensen know the ending. Jensen struggled with it at first. Misha does not know the ending as of SDCC

Matt Cohen and Richard Speight Jr. will direct

At the beginning of the season Dean and Cas will still have a rift. They will reconcile “at some point”. Jensen claims as of script 4 they still have friction. This has been repeated several times, from Misha as well. He indicated Dean is still mad at Cas, but Cas doesn’t feel to blame for Mary’s death.

In an interview, Kripe indicated that the series ending would have “peace” for Sam and Dean

Not much new at the TCA’s, but it was said it is “unlikely” Jeffery Dean Morgan will be back since his last appearance was such a good end note. There were some jokes about a Castiel spin off. Hell, I’d watch.

There will be a special tribute ep, not clear if its one of the 20 or additional

Misha will be in 15 out of 20 episodes this season

According to Dabb, Sam and Dean are going to start to lose people who, in past seasons, we would’ve never lost — and lose them in a very real way. Our guys are going to realize there’s a certain finality, and some of the things they’ve relied on to get through the day — people, talents, things like that — they are no longer going to be able to roll out. And that’s going to throw them for a loop (Unfortunately, my guess in Rowena)

Also according to Dabb, Jack is still in the empty and “he’s not coming back in the near future”

Cas’ deal with the Empty may come up later in the season.

Christan Kane (Leverage/Angel) will star as “Leo” an “old friend” of Deans.

Dabb intimated that Chuck was inherently responsible for killing Mary when asked how the boys would respond to Jack.

Adam Rose, who played Aaron Bass from the golem episode vauge-tweeted about working a show with two badass leads. Could be Supernatural, but I think the timing is off- he indicated he was filming late Friday night.

Dabb compared Chuck and John Winchester, claiming that Dean would have to break free of “conditioning.” Also, for Jack “there have been cosmic forces fighting for his attention since he was in the womb — and that will continue. As much as this season is about Sam and Dean finding agency, it’s also about Castiel finding agency, and it’s about Jack finding agency. As always, death is never the end. It’s just part of the journey and that’s certainly true with Jack.”

Per Variety: At the outset of the season, the “Supernatural” foursome of Dean, Sam, Castiel and Jack are split up, but Dabb notes they won’t be for long because “ultimately this is a found family, and they have deep emotional bonds” that make up the most important part of the show.

According to the MarySue and other interviews, Sam’s bullet hole will give him a connection and insight to god- like a tin can telephone string.

Jensen mentioned a guest star “fan favorite” that hasn’t been seen since season 7 that is no longer in the business. Guesses include Becky, who hasn’t acted in a while but isn't exactly a fan favorite, Meg, who hasn't acted but she was in season 8, and Balthazar or Frank or Jo or Rufus, but all act frequently. Jensen doesn't always have the most accurate season memory, so he could be off on the season. Since this seems like a Chuck episode, my guess is Becky but I hope for Meg. SOURCE UNCONFIRMED- I haven’t seen this in a reliable source, so take it with a grain of salt. UPDATE- it sounds like Becky’s voice in the Shaving People, Punting things trailer. UPDATE- Jensen talked about a returning character in an interview with Variety in a completely contradictory way to this- a favorite male character of his that is busy working. Another guest? Osric Chau popped over to set, but he is filming on Legends of Tomorrow in the same studio. Sebastin Roche also indicated he would come by, he is filming on Batgirl. Unfortunately, neither Kevin or Balthazar will appear in this one.

Review: Pettimal 1/6 scale (Yo-SD) body

Summary: 9/10 would recommend.

Pros: Shapely sculpting especially on the legs, elegant jointing, good poseability, colour-matching available, variety of option hands, easy to change hands, two available heights, solid quality resin, single-piece torso looks good unclothed or in swimwear.

Cons: Longggg wait time, single-piece torso limits poses, creaks like crazy at the beginning, non-gendered (if you like having different male/ female bodies), arms slightly on the short side if you’re looking for child-like proportions, elastic in elbow joints is rather visible (I’m grasping at straws here...)

Wait time: My longest doll-related wait ever, as this body is wildly popular with Chinese collectors. It took about 7 months from ordering to receiving the body. Whilst it was finally being shipped to me, I had decided that I was never going to order a Pettimal body again, due to the wait, but after actually receiving the body and playing with it, I changed my mind. XD

Posing: First off, it’s worth noting that this is the short version (~25.8cm) of the original Pettimal body (~27cm). Despite the stumpier legs, I still feel like this body was designed for a ballerina, as it poses very elegantly and steadily with one foot directly in front of the other, which isn’t easy to achieve with any of my other bodies in this size range.

It can also do an aesthetically pleasing split, no doubt due in large part to the very mobile upper thigh joint. The legs are strung to each other through the pelvis and separate from the torso/head - my first doll with this type of system.

Kneeling upright is no problem. The double joints in the elbows engage effortlessly as you pose the arms. (I cannot over-emphasise how much of a nice change this is from Miyadoll and Asai’s elbows.) There are minor indentations and grooves sculpted in which aid the process along. Along with the visually appealing and easy-to-use upper thigh joints, this is what I call elegant joint sculpting~~

It can kneel on its haunches (seiza position). (By the by, I deliberately chose to take these posing pictures with a head on, because the head adds a~lot of extra weight on one particular end of the body and it does affect how it poses.)

There is a slightly shelf at the pelvis/ upper thigh that enables the body to lean forward whilst kneeling.

One of my favourite poses, the “side lounge” (sitting with both legs tucked to one side).

And again, without engaging either double joint, this time. Needless to say, the body can also sit suwarikko (spreadeagled, which is another favourite pose). There is a good range of motion in the ankle joint, too.

My only issue with this body on the posing front is that it creaks like mad when I move it about! I’ve never had a doll that creaked before, I don’t think... even my ASAI/ The Lunarlake Murphy, who arrived super tightly strung, and is also Chinese-made. I think it will wear off, otherwise I will have to downgrade my rating, this noisy of a doll is not acceptable to me. D=

Sculpting: I don’t think I need to say much. If your taste is like mine, those shapely legs and cute torso speak for themselves. The single-piece torso, of course, carries its inherent disadvantage of limiting posing. I would also prefer to have gendered bodies, but the sculptor has declared that no split-torso or gendered Pettimal body will be made available.

Resin: The resin feels good quality - very solid and dense. I don’t see any traces of seams, discoloration or dust. There is a small area of roughness along the lip of one of the pelvis sockets, but I think it could be due to unevenness in the mold itself.

This particular body was colour-matched to “2018 Volks normal”, and it’s a pretty close match to my November 2018 Volks SDM body and this ASAI Mira head (which itself is supposedly colour-matched to Volks) - it is just very slightly less peachy/pink than actual Volks resin. It also doesn’t look translucent at all (unlike Volks, which has a very faint “glow”).

Heads: It will depend on the particular head, of course, but my ASAI Mira head has very good mobility on the neck without the addition of a “KIPS” disc. Due to its petite proportions, I think this body will match well with smaller heads like Mia’s Soo, or ASAI Mira, Murphy or Aya.

Option hands: 9 pairs available, in sets of 3 pairs each, plus bonus “prayer hands” only available if you buy all 3 sets. Hands are easy to change as the S-hook rests inside the ball joint after removing the hand.

Price: 800RMB, and option hands are sold in sets of 3 pairs for 270RMB a set.

SD Who Con is returning to San Diego! The small and intimate fan-run event celebrates the British science fiction television program produced by the BBC called Doctor Who. The SD Who Con started in 2016 as San Diego’s only Doctor Who fan-run convention. This year’s event is known as WHO CON 2019 “WHODUNNIT?” and will run from October 4th – 6, 2019 at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in San Diego, CA.

This year’s convention theme is “WHOdunnit?” – a Whovian spin on that singular phrase that spawned a multitude of ideas and personalities: Hercule Poirot, Nick and Nora Charles, Phillip Marlowe, Sam Spade, Nancy Drew, Scooby Doo! A myriad of mystery seekers.

The three-day event features guests, cosplay contests, panels, and social activities. There will be a vendor room featuring a wide variety of Doctor Who themed merchandise along with a charity auction to benefit the Pegasus Rising Project. The Pegasus Rising Project is a small, all-volunteer group that makes rescued horses available as therapy animals to returning U.S. military veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This helps the veterans with healing and social reintegration.

Guests Alisa Stern and Jon Davey will be in attendance!

Alisa Stern is the creator, producer, and writer of the “Doctor Puppet” stop motion animation series on YouTube. Her puppets are handcrafted fan tributes to Doctor Who, made in New York City.

Jon Davey is best known for his work on Doctor Who, A Fantastic Fear of Everything, and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Jon has played a variety of monsters in 40-plus episodes of Doctor Who since 2005. These include Cybermen, Daleks, Ood, Jadoon, Mire Warriors, Heavenly Host, Hath, and Whispermen.

I was fortunate enough to be able to make the trek from cold, snow-covered Michigan to the wonderfully warm climes of Arizona to attend Ace Comic Con Phoenix 2019. When Ace announced Michael Fassbender, I was completely floored. Fassy is one of my favorite actors of my generation, he was never someone I thought I'd get the chance to meet.

Grace (my SD) & I were one of the first people through the autograph line and I was killer nervous. I don't tend to get starstruck anymore, but I was feeling it a tad. Michael was all smiles, held his hand out for me to shake, introduced himself (I reciprocated), and he told me I had a great handshake. I said thanks, then thanked him for coming. At this time, Grace was trying to crawl under the table (she was checking the area like she is supposed to do) and I had to pull her back and apologized to the security guard who was standing next to us. Michael stopped signing and stood up and looked over the table, and smiled and said, "Oh, hello, beautiful." He then finished my auto, I told him thanks again and he replied in the welcome. BTW- I love the sweater choice, he looked so relaxed in it.

For photo ops, we were again near the front. I had purchased an additional op like normal so I could get 1 with Grace and 1 without (if the actor would allow so.) I love that I got a real genuine smile/emotion out of him. They all said hello to Grace as she stood by and then it was over, we were off to get our prints.

The GMK NucBox (model number KV-1 or K1) is a low-cost, ultra-tiny mini-PC. While not a performance beast, it manages to squeeze seamless 4K streaming at 60FPS into a palm-sized computer. But it's also a decent productivity machine. So does top-tier efficiency and value justify a purchase?

Who is GMK Tec?

GMK Tec successfully launched the NucBox though Kickstarter in 2019. I can't confirm whether GMK Tec makes electronics or resells them. Everything that I've seen so far indicates they are a manufacturer. The GMK Tec site has been up since 2019 and their reputation is good.

However, Aliexpress and Amazon list machines that look identical to the NucBox, with one difference: the clones have another company's branding slapped on them. That means you'll see many identical devices, for different prices.

This implies the NucBox is a white-label product. For example, XCY sells an identical machine on Aliexpress. As the name indicates, you might as well paste a white label on it and write your own name on it.

As illustrated above, the NucBox's PCB layout appears similar to Chuwi's LarkBox Pro. Even the LarkBox's eMMC and Wi-Fi modules are positioned in near-identical locations. I'm not saying that Chuwi and GMK are the same company, but they may have used the same company to design their circuit boards. At the very least, it looks like these computers aren't significantly different from each other to justify big price differences.

Competition in the Smaller-than-a-NUC mini-PC market

The 2020 GMK NucBox KV-1 competes with ECS's Liva Q1D, and Chuwi's Larkbox Pro in the ultra-tiny PC space. While some would use a tiny computer for productivity, its most obvious function is for 4K streaming. And while all three devices stream 4K video at a seamless 60FPS, the NucBox offers the best specifications, using a real SSD instead of an eMMC drive.

It's worth noting that Xiaomi cloned the NucBox KV-1 with its Ningmei Rubik's Cube Mini. That said, Xiaomi's PC isn't available on Amazon or from any retailer I could find in the United States.

Intel Celeron N4200 Vs. N4125

The NucBox KV-1 uses an Intel Celeron N4125 "Gemini Lake Refresh" processor. The N4125 architecture trades raw processing performance for performance-per-watt. And while it won't win any races, the NucBox's processor is great at efficiently streaming 4K video at 60Hz. While the LarkBox Pro and the NucBox use a Gemini Lake Refresh unit, its competitor, the ECS Liva Q1D, uses an older Apollo Lake, N4200 or N3500, processor.

Even with a non-trivial performance difference between the two processors, 4K video playback is about equal. The N4200 uses slightly more power and supports fewer instruction set extensions.

Unfortunately, Gemini Lake Refresh and Apollo Lake aren't the newest in low-power processors. Both technologies look ancient compared to Jasper Lake. Those looking for more performance and efficiency should wait until the end of the year when new products release.

Intel HD Graphics 505 Vs. Intel UHD Graphics 600

The NucBox's UHD 600 GPU is an improvement over the Liva's 505 HD platform. But in terms of 4k streaming, they aren't vastly different from each other. Both graphics processors can stream fluid 4K content at 60FPS. Most consumers won't perceive a difference between the two unless they attempt gaming. But neither processor is designed for gaming.

Ports and VESA-Mounting in an Ultra-Small Size

You'll find a total of five ports: two USB-A 3.0, one HDMI 1.4, one 3.5mm audio jack, and one Micro-SD card slot. The Micro-SD card slot is bootable, meaning you can install Linux or Windows from it.

Unfortunately, the USB 3.0 standard suffers from a wireless interference bug, when a USB 3.0 cable or device is connected to it.

VESA-mounting: on the downside, the NucBox KV-1 lacks a VESA bracket, although it does include what appears to be mounting screw holes. Without a bracket, I'm not sure how it would attach to the back of a monitor as I couldn't find any compatible brackets on Amazon or through GMK Tec's website.

Performance

The NucBox isn't a performance beast, but pound-for-pound it is a streaming titan.

Streaming and Playback: 4K Videos at 60Hz

The NucBox had no issues playing 4K videos at 60Hz. It never consumed more than 11 watts, never stuttered during playback, and its temperatures never exceeded the low sixties.

Unfortunately, the NucBox ran the fan up to fairly loud rotations, hitting a dBm of 53. While the fan speeds are fully exposed in BIOS, the default settings are loud. In comparison, ECS's Liva made no audible sounds during playback, although its BIOS settings weren't accessible.

File-Transfer Speeds

Unlike other smaller-than-a-NUC PCs, the NucBox uses an SSD storage drive. My unit is equipped with a 512 GB Netac SSD. However, the 128 GB SSD is likely significantly slower than the 512 GB model.

In comparison, both the LarkBox Pro and the ECS Liva Q1D uses half-as-fast eMMC drives. So while the NucBox KV-1 storage drive has good performance, it's not great. The KV-1 uses the last-generation SATA transfer protocol, rather than the latest NVMe (PCIe). Even so, the computer feels snappy and fluent, particularly compared to devices using eMMC.

On top of the built-in eMMC storage, the NucBox offers a bootable Micro-SD card slot for expandable storage.

BrowerBench.org, which measures CPU and GPU performance on rendering websites, rates the NucBox significantly higher than the ECS Liva.

While these numbers are improved over the Liva, they are weak by desktop standards. However, the NucBox feels significantly faster than the Liva while browsing most websites.

PassMark Benchmarks

PassMark isn't a perfect benchmarking tool. Even so, the results imply that the NucBox's N4125 processor isn't a performance beast. Furthermore, it further illustrates its weak and strong points: it has a decent SSD, below average 3D performance, below average RAM, and below average processor performance. Even so, it's an all-round improvement over the ECS Liva's N4200 processor and adequate for most productivity-oriented tasks.

Power Efficiency

Using a power meter, I measured the following power consumption numbers for the NucBox:

Peak consumption, 4k 60FPS: 11.1 watts

Average consumption, 4K 60FPS: 8.5 watts

Idle consumption: 3.8 to 4 watts

Standby consumption: 0 watts

The overall power efficiency is slightly better than the Liva's with power consumption while suspended being less than what my power meter can read. Furthermore, its peak power consumption is 11.1 watts, almost 2 watts lower than the 13-watts consumed by the Liva at maximum power draw.

While these numbers are good, Intel's Jasper Lake platform will introduce a variety of power-saving schemes, from Heterogenous Multi-Processing (HMP) to a 10-nanometer die shrink.

Temperature and Fan Performance

I ran a 4K video at 60FPS while monitoring NucBox's processor temperature. While the fan reached high levels of noise production (47 dBm, measured at six inches from the fan), the processor temperature never went above the low sixties. This means that GMK prioritized processor temperature over acoustics, which is something of a mistake.

However, GMK allows the user to adjust fan speeds from within the BIOS settings.

CPU Temperature, CPU Load, Power Consumption

I did not detect any CPU throttling even under heavy synthetic workloads. Normally, small form factor computers use tiny fans and have limited space to vent heat. Sometimes you might see temperatures creep up over time, particularly under heavy workloads.

I did not observe any problems with cooling on the NucBox.

However, it also doesn't appear that the Intel Celeron N4125 processor adjusts its power consumption based on CPU loads very much. I noticed that it consumes a consistent 8-11 watts of power.

Repairability, Modularity, and Warranty

Unlike the Liva Q1D, the NucBox KV-1 can be fully disassembled. The catch is that there are only two replaceable parts: the power supply unit and the M.2 2242 storage drive. Other major components, including Wi-Fi card, RAM, and CPU, are soldered onto the mainboard.

The 24-watt USB Type-C (USB-C) power adapter isn't just replaceable, it's modular. Because the NucBox pulls 11 watts at peak load, you can use a smartphone charger in case the power brick ever fails. However, I would not advise that, as USB-C power supplies can be dangerous.

Warranty

Like many white-label products, the GMK NucBox KV-1 has a one-year warranty. Unfortunately, GMK requires you to pay return shipping costs to China. On a NUC-sized PC, that's not a lot of money. But time is money. The waiting period could be months. GMK's policy compares poorly to ECS's 3-year warranty, with return costs covered.

Linux Compatibility

The NucBox Kv-1 isn't 100% Linux-ready. It suffered from various issues with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, Debian, and Fedora. However, it managed to boot all three operating systems. Unfortunately, the Intel 9461 Wi-Fi 5 card wasn't recognized out-the-box in Ubuntu. That means getting Linux working requires additional work. Additionally, HDMI audio didn't work and no settings tweaks could fix it.

The ECS Liva Q1D offers better Linux compatibility. On the positive side, the Micro-SD card slot is bootable, unlike the Liva Q1D's slot.

NucBox KV-1's Problems

The only serious issues I could find were the limited Wi-Fi reception and fan noise.

Limited Wi-Fi and Wireless Capabilities

Unfortunately, the single antenna on the Intel 9460 Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) card combined with a metal chassis causes reduced Wi-Fi performance. While GMK reduced interference by tucking the antenna into the plastic fan, the Wi-Fi performance is not equivalent of ECS's all-plastic Liva Q1D. Additionally, the aluminum frame causes a reduction in range of wireless peripherals, such as mice and keyboards.

Loud Fan Noise During 4K Streaming

SPN Season 15 Spoiler Sheet, update 10/14

Episode one down! Hope everyone enjoyed. Not too much this week after the glut of info of last week. Some photos from ep 3 is pretty much all we got. No episode description yet for ep 4, so that confirms the ep is unlikely to air on Halloween so we will have a one week hiatus. Under the cut!

General Info (oldest to newest)

There is likely to be 20 episodes

They are filming the 4th episode 1st, which Jensen is directing

Returning this year are: Rowena, Ketch, Eileen, Amara, Adam, and Kevin

Jared and Jensen know the ending. Jensen struggled with it at first. Misha does not know the ending as of SDCC

Matt Cohen and Richard Speight Jr. will direct

Sam, Dean, and Cas will struggle with the concept of free will and if they ever really had it

The focus will be more on Hell than Heaven

There is hope to wrap up some Wayward Daughters storylines in the back half of the season

They are adding a whole extra day to filming to do the final scene (Implies logistics- lots of returning people?)

Brad Bucker used the word “romance” when asked about Sam and Dean’s arcs. Did not specify who.

Chuck will be more of an absent protagonist in the 1st half of the season (but he in in ep 4)

In an interview, Kripe indicated that the series ending would have “peace” for Sam and Dean

SD Comic Con was during filming

Jensen mentioned a guest star “fan favorite” that hasn’t been seen since season 7 that is no longer in the business. Guesses include Becky, who hasn’t acted in a while but isn’t exactly a fan favorite, Meg, who hasn’t acted but she was in season 8, and Balthazar or Frank or Jo or Rufus, but all act frequently. Jensen doesn’t always have the most accurate season memory, so he could be off on the season. Since this seems like a Chuck episode, my guess is Becky but I hope for Meg. SOURCE UNCONFIRMED- I haven’t seen this in a reliable source, so take it with a grain of salt. UPDATE- sounds like Becky in the Shaving People, Punting things trailer.

There was a beaver mascot on set… it looks like they are filming at a school called Beaverdale

Misha posted from set in new shoes- very shiny with well tailored pants. (The next day he posted in full Cas costume, so are the shoes a one off? Another outfit with new shoes?)

Misha and Jensen made a video from set. I feel like if Jared was around he would have been in it since it was about money raised? Maybe a Dean Cas scene?

There will be a battle scene in this that Jensen mentioned he was looking forward to and we would enjoy.

After NJ Con, it appeared that Jensen returned to work, Jared and Misha stayed an extra day and then Misha went home.

Jensen and Christian filmed at a bar called Swazey’s. This was the fight scene Jensen was referring to.

At some point, Sam might be shirtless or we can see part of his chest- Jared had his anti-possession tattoo at the weekend convention.

Osric Chau popped over to set, but he is filming on Legends of Tomorrow in the same studio.

Jensen posted a series of pics- one clean shaven, one vid of him shaving, and one where he appeared to be in character with blood and dirt on his face and in Dean plaid, but with his beard… confusing- some time jump theories are developing for ep 4.

Jensen was photoed filming (wearing an FBI jacket)outside with Alex

Misha and Jared filmed outside with a woman and young girl. They were running from the clown guy and a few other zombie looking creatures. CAS WAS NAKED (haha just no trench) and holding a shotgun. It could have been rehearsal and there was no camera in the clip shared by a fan which might explain the coat? Another fan said it was hot and Misha kept taking the coat off, so I’m sure this just a piece of rehearsal footage.

Alex was filming in white sunglasses. Other set photos indicate he had makeup on his eyes making them look burnt out. There is some spec that Jack will come back blind.

Misha posted a pic of the 4 of them in the impala

According to Variety, the boys will escape the zombies in a temp shelter. They are working together, but Cas feel “detached.” Misha seems to indicate that Cas feels unfairly blamed in Mary’s death and is deeply upset about Jack.

According to TVGuide, after they fight past the zombies, they end up in a mausoleum. They end up making a “deal with the devil” to get out. This is particularly upsetting to Cas.

Posing as FBI agents, the boys seal off the town as a gas leak to contain the monsters temporarily.

Dean’s time in hell is brought up

Sam’s wound might have more meaning

Jack’s body is being used by an entity that will help the boys get out of the zombie situation.
