Baron Maximilian von Heune comes into Sally and Brian’s life, he has the same outlook on life as Sally but is wealthy enough to fund it. Baron is kind enough to surprise his new friends gifts and favours. What is happening around all their lives is the Nazi uprising but they seem to not care or pay a lot of attention.

Sally bowles is an american actor and cabaret singer that went to berlin to find stardom. Sally used people without feeling any guilt or remorse, but she is very childlike and innocent. This childishness made her very loveable. Sally is a cabaret artist of very little talent but her charms wins the crowd. She is witty, charming and beautiful.

Context of the song:

Sally Bowles is a performer in a venue called Kit Kat club. She entertained men with her performance of mein herr which was about an over controlling man who tried to change his woman, but the woman’s reaction is that man cannot change the way she sees things. Throughout the song she describes the fact that she does not need the man and says goodbye to him. She describes in the song that she uses men to get where she wants, “The continent of Europe is so wide, Mein Herr... I couldn't ever cross it if I tried, Mein Herr. So I do...Man by man.” This shows that Sally didnt care what she was doing, just as long as she could get what she wants.

Characters motivation for singing this song:

This song slightly shadows her and Brian’s relationship who unfortunately gets sally pregnant and she decides to have an abortion. Sally wants to be a free, open woman as she describes throughout the song. She doesn’t need a man telling her what to do and how to think. So the motivation for this song is to say goodbye to him and his ways.
